Sabathia was terrible in most of his opening day starts for us. I'll worry in May.
Sabathia has had a bunch of bad performances on Opening Day, including last year against the Rays. But during last year’s Opening Day start, Sabathia’s fastball averaged over 92 MPH and topped out at ~94.5 MPH. So far today he’s nearly 3 MPH under that.

2013 NL MVP Bryce Harper is really going to make it a tough year for the Harper Haters.

Samardzija working on a no-no through 1 but he's on pace to throw 198 pitches. Will the Cubs let him go the distance?!?

I don't hate him at all, but I would still appreciate him turning into Frenchy because it will make me feel better about that trade I mentioned earlier.

I would love it if he somehow managed to put up a better season than 2012 Mike Trout...particularly for those of us who (not quite believing it) said "but Trout was 20, Harper's only 19!"
Cue announcers going nuts about Jackie Bradley Jr. making a GREAT CATCH when he obviously just didn't get a very good read on the ball.
Not a good read, but it was still a good catch that a lot of LF wouldn't make.

Strasburg's now taken down 18 in a row. And very efficiently as well: 67 pitches through six innings.

Most teams don't push their starters the first week or two. I wouldn't worry about it.
edit: Then again, the Yanks seem determined to get 5 innings out of CC.

Yeah, what's the deal with this?
First start of the season, it's not too surprising. Most teams won't let their pitchers stretch to or past 100 pitches on opening day, no matter how we'll they're going. I'd think that rule goes doubly so for a guy laboring under such a protective umbrella to begin with.

80 pitches though? I get pulling him at 100 or even 95 or something. But 80 seems overcautious even for the way they've handled Strasburg.

Did the color guy on Yankees-Red Sox just say Lester's landing point is lower when his release point is higher? Because I'm pretty sure that's not even possible.

Tulo just hit a two-run homer. More importantly for the Rockies, it's the top of the third, and he's not hurt yet.

Psst...A.J. Burnett has already struck out 9 in 3 & 1/3 innings. But he has given up two runs.
The Cubs' bottom three of Valbuena, Lillibridge and Samardzija has combined for 6 ABs and 5 strike outs.
EDIT: and Samardzija is the one who managed to put the ball in play.

Two of them were Valbuena, though -- and I think those only count as .25 strikeouts in the official books.... two others were Lillibridge, which are only worth .33... So actually -- he's only struck out 6.16 through 4. Still not bad.

Phelps in. So does this mean they are skipping the 5th rotation spot until Hughes is healthy? I guess I understand that, but I am not convinced Nova is better than Phelps.

Harper fouls out. Trade him to the Yanks for Vernon Wells' contract.
Because a couple hits and an SB for Castro, an HR for Rizzo, and a strong 5 innings by Samardzija assuming he gets through the next frame -- and I'd be ready to call it a day well done if it should happen to pour in the next 15 minutes or so.

Who or what is a Jedd Gyorko?
My pick for rookie of the year in the predictions thread..
AJ Burnett and Jeff Samardzija continue to turn back the clock to the thrilling game of yesteryear -- it's as if we're watching an aging Vic Willis get outdueled by a young Mordecai Brown... No word on whether BPJ would be willing to lop off a digit for authenticity's sake.

Speaking of which, Strasburg gave up the leadoff single and has since set down 15 in a row. Sure, they're only Marlins, but...nice.
Nice bunt coverage a day after spring training guys.
I hope, anyway.

Seems fair if he's going to watch the Mets.
Gyorko's actually a pretty fair prospect -- I think most lists have him top 50 and the consensus seems to be that he'll hit plenty.
...and the bottom chunk of the Cubs lineup ssssuuuuuuxxxxxx.

Not Vernon Wells, mind you -- just his contract.
Tuffy Rhodes.

Is he doing the fan dance?
Is it in Pittsburg, Kansas?
"Uh, Jackie Bradley Senior?"
Because he will be hitting 4th.
"Uh, Jackie Bradley Senior?"
It's a fair question. I'm not aware of anyone known person who formally goes by Jr., but whose father isn't known.
EDIT: Wiki says both Senior and Junior were named after Jackie Wilson.
The Nats game has been over for thirty minutes. The Yanks/Sox game is still crawling along in the top of the 7th inning.
Tells me everything I need to know.
EDIT: Ack, coke to Dan Lee.
Hey, I said Juniors! Not IIIs...
Goddammit does Andrew Miller suck.
The correct answer is, of course, Jackie Rogers Jr.
[sigh]
