Orioles-Yanks, Mets-Nats start MLB’s regular opening day

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Yankees host Baltimore and Washington is at home against the New York Mets on March 28, the first games of the earliest regular major league opening day.

The commissioner’s office announced games times Wednesday for the schedule, which was released in August. The previous earliest regular start was March 30 in 2003, 2008 and 2014.

The season opens with a two-game series between Seattle and Oakland in Tokyo on March 20-21, MLB’s fifth opener in Japan after 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012. MLB also has opened in Monterrey, Mexico (1999), San Juan, Puerto Rico (2001) and Sydney, Australia (2014).

MLB will be going all-in (in relative terms, at least) with neutral-site games- finally, a decision of theirs I can fully support!

My wife and I have tickets to the first of the Yankees-Red Sox games in London this year. It'll be the first time I've seen my favorite team play in person in over a decade. (I have seen games at HOU, OAK, and SFG in the interim.) I'm anticipating strangeness.

I remember the Jays hosting the Yankees on Mar 29 last year (it was my birthday, and a treat to see regular season ball played that day). Several other games were played that day,as well as the next two.

I think "regular start" means the majority of teams playing in the same day for the first time.

I would assume it means simply multiple teams, to set it apart from the occasional Japanese trip of Sunday Night Opener ESPN used to host.

But last year's regular schedule, under any definition, did begin on March 29. Which makes this year's start date of March 28 not terribly surprising, given how the calendar works.

I like that baseball starts sooner, if only because more baseball = good, but it still seems odd that our annual tradition when i was you was to see the Mayor's trophy exhibition game between the Yankees and Mets for my birthday, and it seems like most years it was at most a few days before (April 5th) - I might be mis-remembering and they were actually earlier, but I feel like at least one year it was on my bday itself.

This is plain nutty. MLB should require that all games played in cold weather, open air stadiums before the 15th of April start by 4pm.
