Orioles Acquire Kelly Johnson

Needs to go to Tampa and Toronto and complete the circuit. By the end of the day tomorrow, I mean. He’s played for them already.

The Orioles have announced that they’ve acquired infielders Kelly Johnson and Michael Almanzar from the Red Sox for infielders Jemile Weeks and Ivan De Jesus…

Johnson… [has] hit .212/.290/.354 for the season. With the Orioles, he’ll likely play mostly at third base in the wake of the team’s loss of Manny Machado for the rest of the season.

The Orioles selected Almanzar from the Red Sox in the Rule 5 Draft last offseason, but returned him in early July. Since then, he’s hit .280/.360/.427 in 186 plate appearances for Double-A Portland.

They got Alejandro De Aza, too.

I do feel like Weeks deserves more of a shot than he's gotten. Of course, the Red Sox already have a second baseman.

I was texting a friend about this trade and autocorrect turned "De Jesus" into "deejay" and I'd prefer to call him that.

Pedroia got hurt in the game tonight. I have no idea how serious it is. He took a forearm/elbow to the jaw during a tag play at second.

And this means he'll have played with all five AL East teams without having played with any other team in the interim. Other players have played for a whole division, but I don't think that feat has been pulled off before.

yet most of his MLB career was and will always be ATL and ARZ in NL

The O's drafted Almanzar as a Rule V guy from the Red Sox earlier. He was hurt for a bit, but then went back to his old team. Guess Baltimore really wants him.

Wow, this trade is the island of misfit 2B.

And Ivan De Jesus briefly played for Boston after the Dodgers trade in 2012.

Duquette just can't help himself. It will be interesting to see how they set their 25-man today for eligibility for the post-season, although I know they can play games with DL players to allow for some swapping later on.

Why hasn't Weeks gotten more of a shot? I know his first year was not great but his minor league numbers have been consistently good. Is he an attitude problem? Poor defensively? Just looking at the numbers he looks like a guy who could at least have some kind of career.

Part of me thinks it's like 1989 all over again, when the club acquired nothing much to help down the stretch. I think the big acquisition was Keith Moreland, who (BBREF), OPS+ 50 in 30 games.

However, Price and Lester don't seem to be working out that well for their new clubs. And even marginal improvements over Schoop or Lough or Flaherty wouldn't hurt. We'll see.

And the 8 game lead is kind of nice I would think. The Orioles are going to have to do a full 2011 Red Sox not to win the division. I'm honestly stunned at this, I didn't think the pitching would hold up over the course of the season but I'm looking pretty wrong there.

Jose,

I think the issue with Weeks is his defense. The Os could certainly use some help at 2B, but they didn't give Weeks any serious consideration this year. They like Schoop's glove over Jemile's bat, but maybe he would fit better on a team that is not as defense-obsessed.

I had Weeks in a deep league, and his bat was an issue. He sucked with Oakland.

What is in this trade for Boston? Do they see upside in Weeks?

I know Pedroia is Boston's 2B for years to come, or else Mookie Betts would have stayed at second base. I also get that Boston probably doesn't want to put a legit prospect at 2B next year in AAA. However, they do have an intriguing prospect who plays 2B in Sean Coyle, a 22-year-old with a .294/.369/.511, 16 HRs in 333 ABs in AA this year. Decent glove, doing some work at 3B, as well. If he can stay healthy, he's a prospect...does this move say anything about what they think of a guy like Coyle?

I think it's a chance to look at Weeks and see if there is anything there. I can see him being a pretty useful utility guy.

I suspect none of the four players in the deal are meaningful on the teams they were traded to in 2015 though.

And even marginal improvements over Schoop or Lough or Flaherty wouldn't hurt. We'll see.

Fun bit of meaningless trivia: Schoop's WAR of 1.3 in 112 games is roughly the equivalent of Bryce Harper's 0.4 in 75 games.

Somewhat more meaningful is Schoop's 1.4 DWaR. He's got excellent range and a gun that's the equal of Robinson Cano's. He's only 22 years old and I'd expect his hitting to improve with time, and as it is, he's got 12 home runs and few of them were cheapos.

Bah--I own Schoop in the Lounge Fantasy League...I imagine this cuts into his playing time. Bah!

Johnson is expected to play 3B with Machado sidelined - although if Paredes keeps on doing what he's been doing you may be right.
