Orioles’ Adam Jones berated by racist taunts at Fenway Park

Baltimore Orioles All-Star center fielder Adam Jones was berated by racist taunts at Fenway Park while a bag of peanuts was thrown at him Monday night, calling it one of the worst cases of fan abuse he has heard in his career.

“A disrespectful fan threw a bag of peanuts at me,’’ Jones said, “I was called the N-word a handful of times tonight. Thanks. Pretty awesome.’’

Jones, one of just 62 African-Americans on opening-day rosters this year, said he has been subjected to racist hecklings in the past at Fenway Park, but said this was one of the worst experiences of his 12-year career.

“It’s different,’’ he said. “Very unfortunate. I heard there was 59 or 60 ejections tonight in the ballpark. It is what it is, right. I just go out and play baseball. It’s unfortunate that people need to report to those type of epithets to degrade another human being. I’m trying to make a living for myself and for my family.

“It’s unfortunate. The best thing about myself is that I continue to move on, and still play the game hard. Let people be who they are. Let them show their true colors.’’

If someone is throwing peanuts, I wonder if that could be isolated by one of the cameras?

The real question is where was Fenway security (they have tons of them and not all white)?

Handful of times, he ssays so say 5 out of 35,000 fans. 1 in 7000. Lot of visitors and college kids attend these games as well. So indict all of Boston and NE for racism. Thats absurd, regardless of what may have happened 40-50 years ago. The real question is where was Fenway security (they have tons of them and not all white)?

The number I heard was 30 ejections for stuff related to this kind of behavior (half of the 60 ejections they said). What I'd like to see is more of an onus put on the people who stood there and did nothing. The Sox sent an email last night, at least to season ticket holders, reminding us of the various phone and text numbers to contact if there is a problem. I don't think people should be confronting other fans themselves but there is enough security that they can be on scene very quickly. In my experience they are pretty responsive.

I'm not in any position to assess it in terms of racism, but of all the (approximately 10) big US cities I've visited, Boston was definitely the one with the rudest, least pleasant people.

On a somewhat related note, BITD when Hollywood movies stereotyped pretty much every non-middle class whitebread character and region of the country, one of the more blatant stereotypes was the sullen small town New Englander, who never cracked a smile and whose vocabulary consisted of "yep" and "nope".

I wasn't clear. I was more shocked of your casual use of "chink," which I find offensive. It's really disappointing to see that term used here.

I hate to say it because I love Boston, but when I heard a Black baseball player was receiving racial taunts, I immediately assumed Fenway.

Reminds me of a line my dad (a Brooklyn native) once said:

New Yorkers and Bostonians are both rude, but the difference is that the New Yorkers don't really mean it.

Oh my, is this now the "C-word"? How will you sensitive types distinguish it from the other c-word?

He thinks he's doing some kind of Sarah Silverman-esque bit where it's like "I'm in on the joke so it's okay!" except he's constantly posting racist stuff about native americans and african americans, and I'm sure Snapper would be happy to fill you in on YR's thoughts about Catholics.

Actually Andy does that, too; he's thrown out the actual word "n____r" on the boards somewhere on the order of five times -- for some strange reason believing he's got an exemption.

The numbers are in: White guys thinking they've earned an exemption come in just above the 99th percentile for dork.

I wasn't sure if I should go for the Krusty's innocent homespun racism or his new edgy routine, as your act seems to have elements of each.

people in Somerville & Cambridge wearing aggressively mismatched socks -- one argyle, one solid, things like that. It was clearly a little micro fad, one that I never saw anywhere else.)

There's a retailer, "Little Miss Matched," that sells mis-matched socks. The target demographic is I think pre-teen girls, butI used to buy socks for my wife there (because she always seemed to have lots of half-pairs of socks...) but then she started wearing socks made from bamboo (yes, bamboo) so I've had to seek other ways to tease her.
