Orioles’ Chris Davis hits home run vs. Red Sox

Orioles first baseman Chris Davis finally ended his hitless streak over the weekend, hitting an RBI single on Saturday for his first base hit in 55 at bats. Today he did one better: he hit a homer. It was his first round-tripper since August 24 of last season.

Better here than in the box score -- amirite?

If you assume this series against the Red Sox is his new normal, Davis's .308/.357/.692 isn't far off from the career numbers of Barry Bonds and Jimmie Foxx. Congratulations, O's fans!

Adam Dunn did get to the All-Star Game the season after he had the previous worst season ever. That might not be in the cards because Davis has dug himself into a bit of a hole this April, but his career might not be over!

Davis and Ian Desmond seem to be dueling for the title of worst player in baseball, particularly since their teams don't seem to have any plans to take them out of the lineup. Davis had pulled ahead in raw OPS, .396 to .376, after the Patriots Day game; Desmond at that point had a worse OBP than a guy who was hitting .089, which is tough to do.

But Desmond responded with his best game of the year last night in San Diego, hitting a double and his own first homer of the season. He's now at .164/.203/.279, with Davis on his heels at .089/.196/.200. Your move, Chris.

Daniel Palka is feeling a bit left out right now.

049/149/073 with 24 Ks in 48 PA
140/178/233 ... starter on the hottest team
098/159/122 ... only 6 K in 44 PA which is "impressive"
176/189/235 ... teammate of Desmond

Not to mention Mikie Mahtook's 0-23 (now DFA'd) and Peter Bourjos 1-24 and other fine bench performances so far this year.

Brian Dozier says Hold My Beer.

Note: I searched for players with a minimum of 50 plate appearances, but maybe I shouldn’t have. Daniel Palka is worse with 11 fewer plate appearances.

Palka was just farmed out.

What's up with Pollack? Isn't he supposed to be a good defender? His slash line isn't terrible but it looks like his defense is really dragging him down. Has something changed, am I wrong about his defense or is this just early season weirdness.
