Orioles’ Duquette: ‘We’ve got to put a little bit sharper focus on the future’

Duke says:

“But the way I’ve always looked at it, there’s two ways to look at it. You’re trying to improve your team to be competitive and win now, or you’re trying to improve your team to be competitive for the long-term. And we’ve always tried to be very competitive here during my time here in the present. But it doesn’t look like this 2018 ballclub is going to have what it takes to be that type of contending club. So, we’re faced with the reality of seeing where we can improve it so that we can get back and be that contending club.”

After a competent 2+ week stretch, the Orioles have lost 7 straight and have the worst record in the major leagues. Chris Davis, whom Showalter tapped as the leadoff hitter coming out of spring training, is at .154/.234/.239 and he’s not alone on the team south of the Mendoza line.

The Orioles looked like a bad team coming out of spring training and they've managed to underperform pretty impressively. They are on pace for less than 50 wins right now and that's with Manny Machado putting together an impressive salary drive. I'll be shocked if they don't lose 110+ games at this point.

Sure looks that way. It's impressive how everyone except Machado and Jones is just absolutely putrid.

Their two breakout guys from last year (Schoop and Mancini) look like they're breaking back in.

Attention all shoppers. There is a manny Machado sale on aisle 2. Give us $50-60 millionn of value and he can be yours for the stretch run!!!!
   4. McCoy Posted: June 04, 2018 at 12:52 PM (#5685622)
Awesome. You can have Heyward. He's probably worth 50 to 60 million dollars over the remainder of his contract.

On the bright side, their catcher's name is Chance Sisko.

In actuality, Duquette is not even running the Orioles anymore. It's become pretty much common knowledge in Baltimore that Brady Anderson is running the show.

Chris Davis has four years and $92 million left on his deal after this season.

Anyone want to guess when the Orioles will release him?

I'll guess for a Chris Davis release in May 2019.

Jones’s defensive metrics in centerfield are absolutely dreadful this season. (small sample size qualifier :) ). Don’ t know how big of an issue that is at this point....

I am embarrassed I predicted the Orioles would be a Dark Horse candidate for a WC spot. They are a better team than they have shown. I would fire the entire coaching and managerial staff, but thats a month too late to salavge the season. I'd at least fire the hitting and pitching coaches and see if some guys can pick their game up and enhance their trade value

Cant access the Baltimore Sun in EU due to new GBDR rules they wont comply with.
   11. Walt Davis Posted: June 04, 2018 at 06:31 PM (#5685858)
This is what happens when you don't fire Showalter. :-)

They should change their name to the Lemmings for this season because the entire team has gone off the cliff.

5 ... 4 ... 3 ... 2 ... 1 ...

As soon as their helicopter gets over international waters.

In an attempt to make O's fans feel a little less embarrassed, I give you the AL Central ...

The division as a whole has a ...

354 WP vs the ALE, 57-win pace
384 WP vs the ALW, 62-win pace
390 WP vs the NL, 63-win pace

The O's are 8-25 outside the ALE with all 8 wins against the ALC. So there's a good chance they actually aren't worse than the Royals and White Sox, might even give the Twins a run for their money.

Jones’s defensive metrics in centerfield are absolutely dreadful this season
After last season, someone on another website projected Adam Jones would finish his career with +2600 hits, +400 HR, +1300 RBI and runs, etc. I doubted that, offering this take:
Jones is already well into his decline. His speed has slipped and his numbers in CF look like a guy who should be moved off the position; except he doesn't really have the bat to play corner-OF
Then I offered this list:

Chris Davis in on an historical pace right now.

He's sitting at -1.7 bWAR after 52 games (of 58 played by Baltimore).

If he were to keep this pace, he'd break the all-time worst position player bWAR record.
It's held by Atlanta Braves utility player Jerry Royster in 1977. He racked up a -4.0 bWAR

The Orioles desperately need to invent an injury for Davis (or cause one if necessary). Showalter won't bench him, or at least drop him to 9th or 10th in the lineup. I have never ever ever seen a player look more lost at the plate, and I've watched my 7-y.o. son's little league games.

It's more that playing the Mets is itself a solution to a team's problems, albeit a temporary one.

Right now, this is true. The Mets are basically a AAAA team with 5 (d'Arnaud, Cespedes, Lagares, Syndergaard and Flores) significant players on the DL (Frazier is coming back today). I'm starting to understand how otherwise rational people in Chicago and Boston believed in curses for years.

You may have an extra A in there. A bunch of these guys they're playing (Lobaton, Guillorme, Evans, Nido) aren't even viable AAA players. Adrian Gonzalez probably isn't either.

Look, I won't have silly Mets fans (2018 record: 27-30) hijacking a discussion of the Orioles (2018 record: 0-58) by pretending they're the really bad team.

Adrian "probably isn't a viable AAA player" Gonzalez's OPS+ is more than three times Chris Davis's.

I am looking forward to this weekend's subway series, almost entirely because I had one friend, who, when the Mets were good for 3 weeks, spent every single day telling me how much better the Mets were than the Yankees, including the phrase, when the Yankees were 9-9, "worry about your .500 team."

The period since that exact day (since which we have 9 more losses but 29 more wins) has been fun. He has brought this upon himself and shall not live it down.

Sports is basically rank pettiness, but this is his fault. :)

Blame my friend Bruce for this season, Mets fans.

I can't even make fun of the Orioles, they're just sort of sad. It was fun when they were good. I like fighting the Sox but, well, it gets old.

I figured I'd check to see how many SPs the Orioles have had in recent years with a baseline of 162 IP and an ERA+ of 100 or better. most teams would improve by having a guy like that, since they likely don't have 5 SPs at each of those levels. Here goes (none are on pace to qualify this year):

2017 - Dylan Bundy, 102 ERA+ in 170 IP

2016 - Kevin Gausman, 119 ERA+ in 180 IP
2016 - Chris Tillman, 114 ERA+ in 172 IP

2015 - Wei-Yin Chen, 123 ERA+ in 191 IP
2015 - Ubaldo Jimenez, 100 ERA+ in 184 IP

2014 - Chris Tillman, 118 ERA+ in 207 IP
2014 - Wei-Yin Chen, 111 ERA+ in 186 IP
2014 - Bud Norris, 108 ERA+ in 165 IP

2013 - Chris Tillman, 110 ERA+ in 206 IP
2013 - Miguel Gonzalez, 108 ERA+ in 171 IP

2012 - Wei-Yin Chen, 105 ERA+ in 193 IP

2011 - NONE

2010 - Jeremy Guthrie, 108 ERA+ in 209 IP

2009 - NONE

2008 - Jeremy Guthrie, 122 ERA+ in 19 IP

2007 - Erik Bedard, 146 ERA+ in 182 IP
2007 - Jeremy Guthrie, 125 ERA+ in 175 IP

.................

so their problems are a bit different than I realized. they can find a usable SP or two, but in the past decade they haven't any "true ace" seasons at all.
