Orioles have deal in place for Manny Machado, working through trade specifics

It is not yet known which team Machado will be traded to, but the Los Angeles Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies have been invested in their pursuit of the All-Star shortstop.

Fancred reported earlier Tuesday that the Dodgers had emerged as the leading contender to acquire Machado but also noted that the talks were fluid and identified the Phillies, Milwaukee Brewers and Arizona Diamondbacks as contenders with an “outside chance” to land the four-time All-Star.

Sources: top OF prospect yusniel diaz is indeed in the Dodgers’ Machado offer currently on table

Manny Machado just stopped by, and he said he’s seeing the reports of Dodgers and thinks/assumes they’re right (tho he said he doesn’t know for sure). The Miami product who’s been an Orioles his whole career said: “It’ll be different. But different can be good.”

#Dodgers increasingly likely to land Machado, sources tell The Athletic. Barring last-minute snag, several of interested teams expect that outcome.

To me that reads a lot like "Orioles don't actually have a deal in place for Manny Machado." I mean, the specifics are kind of a key part of having a deal.

Last year, allegedly, the Orioles had deals with the Dodgers and Astros at different points to trade Britton. In both cases, allegedly, ownership overruled the baseball staff and killed the deals. Something like that is probably what is happening now. If your point is that no deal is "in place" until everyone has signed off then I pretty much agree. Plus, it is particularly true with the Orioles who seem to have a dysfunctional process for trades.

They're not announcing it today for obvious reasons, but all signs point to El Lay.

Hopefully he can pitch, too.

Robothal:

Can report with more certainty: Machado to #Dodgers happening. Among remaining questions, in addition to specifics of return beyond OF Yusniel Diaz: How much money, if any, #Orioles will send #Dodgers to secure a better package and help ease LAD’s luxury-tax concerns.

Looking forward to Cubs-Dodgers NLCS III. Lot of ball left to play before that, but this has to make the Dodgers the favorite, if they weren't already (fangraphs WS odds suggested they already were).

Nope. With the way things have gone the past 2 years, it'll one of the new, random, tear-down teams taking one of the NLCS spots(Braves or Phillies), then going on to beat one of the old firm(either Boston or NY). As much as it pains me to admit it as a Red Sox fan, but first the Cubs, then Houston..it's like the baseball world entered the bizarro world and a new upstart will win it all again.

Ummmm.... the past two years have featured the Dodgers and Cubs (hence III) and in neither instance was it a new, random, tear-down team.

They still have the Nationals as favorites over both the Phillies and the Braves, too. Go figure.

The Cubs were cr*p for decades and are one of the new tear down teams. They've only been good for a couple of years, they qualify as a new, random, tear-down team in my mind....but hey, it's primer so let's take pedantry to astronomical heights over an obvious joke you missed by more than a Chatwood fastball.

I find the competing odds for a WS title among Nats, Phils, and Braves fascinating. BP has Phi at 3X the Nats probability, but fangraphs very different. I can see fangraphs' POV; the Nats had a poor first half, but much of it was injuries, a few guys being terrible, and close-game losses. Who you take in a short series, Scherzer/Strasburg/good lineup, or Nola+stuff?.

That wasn't pedantry.

Dear GAWD! The Orioles, again!

Steve Phillips @StevePhillipsGM
Possible snag in Machado deal to Dodgers. Sources indicate that one or more of prospects coming to #Orioles have some issues in their physicals. Surprise surprise. May open door for other clubs. Stay tuned.

The replies to this tweet are priceless.

I don't get why people bag on the Orioles for this. The famous case was the last-minute reversal on Grant Balfour. The Orioles didn't like what they saw in the physical, called off the deal, and he went to the Rays. And Balfour stunk and was out of baseball two years later. Maybe other teams should be more uptight about the physical!

To the Dodgers, per MLB Network.

The return seems very light. Yusniel Diaz (who seems like a B prospect, ~#75 rank), and 4 guys who aren't in the Dodgers top 20.

Seems very similar to what the Rangers got for Darvish. I would have thought Machado would bring more.

The one I remember was Dexter Fowler. The Orioles had a deal in place to sign him, but something showed up on his physical. The Cubs signed him and Fowler had a pretty good year for them.
   22. McCoy Posted: July 19, 2018 at 11:47 AM (#5712551)
This year would have been a stinker for the Orioles if they had Fowler under contract but I think they would have been happy with him in 2016 and 2017. I would guess they would have moved him over to left in 2016 which would have prevented the defensive slide in center in 2017. I don't think the Orioles catch the Red Sox with Fowler on the team so they still have the Wild Card loss to the BJ. I don't think the presence of Dexter is making up 10 games in 2017.
