Orioles Hire Buck Showalter

Not passing the Showalter after all.

After much deliberation and sweating from the fans, the Orioles finally made the decision on Buck Showalter as the new manager of the team. Showalter is expected to be in uniform August 3, says multiple sources close to the situation.

Baltimore will be the fourth big league stop for Showalter who compiled a career 882-833 record (.514) during 11 seasons with the New York Yankees, Arizona Diamondbacks and Texas Rangers. He was named the 1994 and 2004 AL Manager of the Year.

Showalter has not managed a game at any level since he was fired by the Rangers, Oct. 4, 2006. He served as senior baseball advisor for the Cleveland Indians for the 2007 season before returning to the commentating side as a baseball analyst for ESPN.

He immediately becomes their 3rd best starter.

If I'm Juan Samuel, I'm now rooting like heck for the Texas Rangers to win the World Series.

I never knew he was such a masochist.

I guess the positive way to look at it is that, being one of the worst seasons in the history of the franchise, there's really no place to go from here but up.

Buck is the perfect guy to help turn this team around.

I think this is a good hire, I'm a little surprised they're dumping him in the middle of this #### pile of a season, but there you are.

Can we get the rest of the ESPN Baseball Tonight staff on the O's as coaches and thus off the airwaves?

Might as well get to work. This gives him a chance to start evaluating what he has and he'll be there for the September call ups.

BTF is disappointing me. I come here expecting nothing but snarky comments about how stupid the Orioles are and how they should have hired Davey Johnson/Bobby Valentine and you guys are being level-headed in your praise of this hire. You guys are slipping.

The hiring is fine enough I suppose, but it doesn't make enough of a difference to be truly significant.

I firmly believe that the Orioles will never be a truly respectable team as long as Angelos is the owner. He is cheap and is not willing to spend the money necessary to acquire top tier free agents, which has become virtually a necessity if you're hoping to be able to seriously compete against the Yankees and Red Sox on a consistent basis. Unlike the Rays, the Orioles haven't shown a solid organizational skill at talent identification in years, and I have it on pretty good authority that he is still very much the meddling micromanager on these issues, despite his P.R. effort to try and remain more behind the scenes.

At the present time, the Orioles look every bit as hopeless as the Pirates or Royals to me.

Baltimore will now be looking for a new manager to take over after the 2014 season, since 4 years is about the limit for Buck as a manager.

You can dislike Peter Angelos for many reasons but he is willing to pay money for free agents and overpay them to come to Baltimore. Albert Belle and Miguel Tejada come to mind. I can't really think of any cases where another million would have made a big difference. Very few of the high priced hitters and fewer of the top pitchers want to go to a losing team. Why would they?

When I think of the free agent signings of the past few years, I am glad they didn't end up with Baltimore: Soriano with the Cubs, Lee with the Astros, Bay with the Mets. Teixeira wasn't going to sign with anyone but NY although he used Baltimore and DC to drive up his price.

The Orioles will have to improve through the draft and international signings. Most of the AA and AAA pitching talent is now overmatched in the Big Show. There are no position players at either level. Unfortunately this has been the situation for quite some time in Baltimore. Every September the team looks at their prospects and over rates their talent. Buck can see as well as Trembley and others that they don't match up to the opposition. Question remains for Buck and Andy McPhail- How do you get talented players?

Buck was the de facto GM who built the AZ team that won in 2001, if the birds give him some real authority he could make a big impact.

This only works for teams that are active in the international market and can scout well and develop young players well. Unfortunately, the O's are none of these. Hopefully, Buck can make some improvements.

Albert Belle was signed almost 12 years ago. It was, seemingly, the Belle disaster that soured Angelos on spending the big bucks. (Tejada signed a "big deal," except that by the time he signed in 2003, $72M/6 was merely a middle-class deal, not a big one.)
