Orioles Release Jamie Moyer

BALTIMORE—The Baltimore Orioles released 49-year-old Jamie Moyer on Saturday, parting ways with the crafty left-hander at his request.

Moyer started the season with Colorado, where he became the oldest pitcher to win a game in the big leagues. He went 2-5 before being designated for assignment by the Rockies on May 30.

Moyer subsequently signed a minor-league contract with Baltimore on June 6. The deal came with the stipulation that he would make three starts with Triple-A Norfolk, and after that the Orioles had to promote him or grant his release.

After his third start Wednesday, the Orioles offered Moyer another start with the Tides. He instead opted to become a free agent.

The quest for 270 will have to continue somewhere else.

I guess Arrieta seeming to have regained his footing a bit has something to do with this? But I can't deny I would have liked to see Moyer get another start as an Oriole.

In his 3 AAA starts, he threw 16 innings, with a 1.69 ERA, 16 K's and no walks. Not bad. The dream might not be over.

Why hasn't Josh Byrnes called Moyer's agent yet? San Diego kicked the tires on Jason Marquis. I would take my chances with Moyer over Marquis.

EDIT: Why hasn't Jack Z called either?

Just to see a pitcher have 17 years between starts for a team.

I kinded wanted him to get a couple starts, too.

The Os need a 5th starter twice before the all star break, and I'd rather see Moyer make those starts than Tommy Hunter.

Kip Wells is about to make a start for the Padres. The last time he appeared in the majors was 2009. The last time he had an ERA+ over 100 was 2003.
