O’s, Grant Balfour agree on deal

The deal is reportedly for $14 million with an additional $500,000 in deferred money each year, according to multiple reports.

Not only is he a closer, he can Grant Balfour.

Is it just me or is that a surprisingly reasonable deal?

Why trade for Johnson if Balfour was going to sign for this price? Unless the A's are concerned about Balfour's age it doesn't make much sense.

Would Balfour have signed for this price three weeks ago though? It's only in hindsight that we can detect that teams weren't exactly rushing to make him lucrative offers.

Word earlier today from Susan Slusser was that when the A's traded for Johnson, Balfour was looking for three years.

For the A's, it may make sense financially to pay Johnson for one year at $10 mil rather than Balfour $15 mil over two - they'll have a lot of guys looking at big arbitration increases after next season and will want to keep at least some number of them.

Balfour had also been rumored to be looking for 3 years at $24 million, and I can definitely see where the A's wouldn't have wanted to do that. Sometimes you can't wait on the market to see what happens, although I would argue that in the case of relievers, you can and probably should...

I hear you..it's not like I'm changing my Twitter profile page and getting rid of the great panoramic shot of the RF ragers...he was a lot of fun to watch. And given what he got, I really wish the A's had waited, but I thought he'd go for more. Teams generally seem to be wising up when it comes to paying relievers.

Eh...a couple of decent-ish LOOGYs got 3/$16.5 and 2/$7 over the past couple of days.

I'll see #6 and raise a @$%@#)S#*

Not so sure. Balfour's being paid "only" this much I think because of age and his closer pixie dust is only 1.5 years old. As #8 says, good middle relievers are getting $5-6 M these days.

Howell: 2/11
Logan: 3/16.5
Lopez: 3/13
Mujica: 2/9.5
Qualls: 2/6
Thornton: 2/7
Axford: 1/4.5

plus closers Nathan 2/20 and (amazing) Wilson 1/10 (15 IP the last two years)

On the other hand Mike Pelfrey got 2/11 from the Twins so I'm sending them my resume and some sped-up video -- should be worth 1/$2M at least.

Cubs just signed Jose Veres to 1/4....

The quest continues to build a bullpen replete with names I've heard of....

Very happy with this signing. The orioles basically traded one year of Johnson for two years of Balfour, two years of Ryan Webb, and Jemile Weeks.

Jemile Weeks will be a great asset to the Norfolk Tides.

Seriously, what happened to that guy?

You could ask the same question about his brother.

And David Freitas. But not Mike Crudale. I've no idea what the A's were thinking paying a reliever $10M in a year. Even if Balfour somehow got 3 years there are so many other guys -- Benoit, Nathan, Rodney, et al -- after the music stopped someone would have been left without a job. They must really hate Brett Anderson for some reason.

Hell Yeah - well done grant - quietly one of country's highest paid sport stars.

Still hardly anyone out here knows who he is!

I suppose it was smart but....ugh. The last couple of years, the Orioles have been my AL team to the extent I have one. Now that they have this mouthy horrible #######, though, I'm done with them. No way I can root for Grant Balfour's team. If the Cardinals ever got him I'd have to contemplate suicide.

Pretty fantastic series of moves by the Orioles this offseason.

Well, that answers the question as to what Beane was thinking.
