O’s Interested In Delmon Young, Jack Cust, Mark Reynolds

Billy McMillon is available.

The Orioles have some interest in adding both Delmon Young and Jack Cust on minor league deals, according to Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com. Each player will be at the Orioles’ minicamp tomorrow to see if there’s a potential fit on a non-roster deal, according to Kubatko. Baltimore also has some interest in a reunion with Mark Reynolds, though nothing is hot on that front for now, according to Kubatko (All links to Twitter).

Maybe I'm missing some backlash out there, but it seems like the Orioles have somehow escaped being called out for their low payroll ways. Even inefficiently attained, an extra $20-30 million in talent would have been huge for them the past 2 years, and probably for 2014.

Surely Mike Jacobs, Dan Johnson or Mike Hessman would pick up the phone if Baltimore called.

Those three have combined for 947 professional home runs -- Hessman 409, Johnson 277, Jacobs 261. Better even than Cust (330), and Reynolds (270), and Young (162).

Bingo - well, actually combine all 3 posts -- it was 4 guys... Dave Zancanaro was the 4th -- the cover was "Four Aces" -- as the A's had 4 first round picks that year (1990). IIRC, they all fell on the board due to signability issues.

Sign Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds. That would make for a very entertaining season no matter the result and keep those 2 from being on the HOF ballot for years thus saving us from a lot of headaches at HOF time. Then there would be just McGwire & Sosa left, while Sheffield is on next ballot and Manny coming on two years after that with I-Rod. Hey, it would be a bit of a break at least as I figure Sheffield will be in the sub 10% range with McGwire and Sosa fighting to stay on the ballot.

REAL LIFE UPDATE:

On January 14th, the Orioles signed Delmon Young.

Yesterday, they signed Jack Cust.

And today, do you know who they signed? Why, they signed Matt Laporta, that's who.

I hope LaPorta manages to get back into the majors, just so he can inspire another rant like the meltdown that happened when he was on the Indians:

"That can't be a triple! That can't be a triple! It can't be a triple! That's an error on LaPorta! I don't care what anybody says, that's an error on LaPorta! Turning around like this, he's like in my swivel chair here!"

Say what you will about Jack Cust but 500 hits and 105 HR spread over a very mediocre 10 year career netted him about $1M more than I made in a 45 year career selling software to F500 and federal clients.

Good luck Delmon and Jack; milk that cow for all she's worth!
