OT - 2017-18 NBA thread (All-Star Weekend to End of Time edition)

I estimate only 10-12 Primates care about the NBA, none of whom can be bothered to curate their own thread to avoid detracting from what this site is really about:  eliminationist rhetoric and precognition.

Gabe Ikard @GabeIkard
Carmelo and Mo Cheeks were going at it on the bench. Melo was clearly saying he wanted in the game. He is now in. He must now do something to help the Thunder.

That was tweeted mid-second half last night.
   2802. Booey Posted: April 26, 2018 at 04:21 PM (#5661317)
Keeping Melo off the floor during their big run was probably just as key to their comeback as Westbrook and George going supernova was.

Interesting to see what happens in game 6. Melo's probably gonna expect to play his usual minutes and take his usual number of shots, but OKC is clearly better when he doesn't, and after last night they might finally be realizing that. He's been unplayably bad this series.
2803. My name is Votto, and I love to get blotto Posted: April 26, 2018 at 04:37 PM (#5661331)
I can't tell about Melo's contract for next year--looks like a player option for $27 million? That's a tough nut for OKC.
   2804. Fourth True Outcome Posted: April 26, 2018 at 04:46 PM (#5661350)
If Paul George walks and Melo opts in, things could get ugly in OKC
   2805. jmurph Posted: April 26, 2018 at 04:57 PM (#5661360)
Even if he hates it there I don't see how Carmelo can turn down that kind of money. Opt-in then start working on a buyout or finding a trade (unlikely, but maybe).

I know it's already been said, but the notion of "giving LeBron the green light" is legitimately one of the funniest things I've read on here.

i meant that in terms of breaking the offense to go into isolation/hero-ball mode, but whatever.

2808. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: April 26, 2018 at 06:50 PM (#5661409)
So the NBA concedes that both the block should have been a goaldtend and that the Pacers should not have had the ball in the first place. Both really tough calls.
   2809. Fourth True Outcome Posted: April 26, 2018 at 07:24 PM (#5661419)
It seems odd to me that the NBA puts out the two minute officiating reviews during the playoffs. Even if they're a useful measure of transparency etc etc during the regular season, the narrative downside seems enough higher during the playoffs to justify not doing it.

Probably either (in decreasing order of likelihood) because ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ or because of "Why the #### did the NBA cancel the L2M reports right before HANDING THE WHOLE FRIGGIN' SERIES to [LeBron, L.A., Golden State, Boston, Chicago, etc] hmmmm WHAT A COINCIDENCE"

I haven't watched Maker a lot, but judging from this series his issues seem more mental than anything.

The Buck who has been really unimpressive in this series is Eric Bledsoe.

Something like this, I suppose. Sticking with a winner (or loser, depending on your POV).

TOR 4-1 WAS
BOS 4-2 MIL

Jabari could be an X factor here. I was thinking they need to move on from but he could be a way they get shooting and rebounding at a big spot. He doesn’t protect the rim great but has shown a bit of stretch 4/interior defense I wasn’t sure he had in this series. A lineup with him, Middleton, Giannis, Brogdon, and LeBron would be pretty good.

that's some damn good work.

hopefully MIL can pull out game 7 in BOS. next round will be a slog either way, but at least MIL makes up for it by having giannis.

Curious about how often the home team wins G7 when the first 6 games are all won by the home team. Going year by year through NBA playoffs. It happened 12 times before 1990. Home team was 10-2, and in 10 of 12 cases the winning team was either the Celtics or Lakers.
   2825. Rally Posted: April 27, 2018 at 09:20 AM (#5661517)
Got them all now - home team is 19-4 in such series. The road teams to win a G7 after all previous games went to the home team were:

1969 - Celtics over Lakers
1971 - Baltimore over Knicks
2007 - Utah over Houston
2008 - San Antonio over New Orleans

The 2008 Celtics did it twice - over the Hawks and Cavaliers. Strangely, no series met the criteria for almost a decade before the Celtics beat Washington last year.

Heh. I made the revised prediction after both series were 2-2.

I initially predicted Portland to beat New Orleans too. Taking recent events into consideration, I'd like to revise that pick as well...

And I think it was another full decade earlier before that. Before the 2008 Celts, I think Bulls/Pacers in the 1998 ECF was the last time the home team won every game in a 7 game series.

Booey,

Miami did it in 2004. I have to admit that it's easy to forget a 4-5 first round series where the winner goes on to lose to the #1 seed in the next round. That was Dwyane Wade's rookie year.

Rally - Ah, my bad. Nice catch.

And ugh, did you notice the scores for that series you linked?

81-79
93-63
77-71
96-85
87-83
89-83
85-77

Average score of 87-77, with neither team topping 100 a single time.

The Cavaliers really have a weird team right now and the guys that they acquired at the deadline are barely playing and having minimal impact. It doesn't seem like anyone but LeBron can create a shot for themselves and they are trying to play defense with Calderon, Korver, and Love.
2842. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: April 27, 2018 at 08:51 PM (#5661943)
Love really isn't doing anything for the Cavs offensively. I know he's not healthy but the Cavs really need him to be better to be any good.
2843. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: April 27, 2018 at 09:26 PM (#5661969)

Only 2-7 himself but looks like having VanVleet back makes a difference for the Raptors.

Which fanbase of a playoff team is unhappiest going into the offsesaon? I think Washington's in pole position. Cleveland seems to be their only competition. (EDIT - But Cavs have a banner so not sure how mad even they can get.)

Portland has to be up there as well.

Right now, the Pacers are bullying the Cavs on defense.
   2846. PJ Martinez Posted: April 27, 2018 at 09:36 PM (#5661976)
I'd say OKC is another contender for unhappiest fanbase of a playoff team, if they lose to Utah, given what could happen with both George (probably going) and Melo (probably staying).

Weird sequence: Love takes an inadvertent elbow to the face, goes down, then looks hurt, and possibly dazed, when he gets up, but no Cav realizes they should take a foul, and eventually Lue has to use a timeout. Love missed a game for a concussion during the regular season. (He's on the bench now, replaced by Thompson.)
   2847. Crosseyed and Painless Posted: April 27, 2018 at 09:38 PM (#5661978)
Not sure how I forgot Portland. Total generalization here and I'm not sure how to even put this, but for some reason in my head I feel like OKC fans are too involved in the Cult of Westbrook to get too mad.
   2848. nick swisher hygiene Posted: April 27, 2018 at 09:43 PM (#5661987)
Westbrook is a pretty compelling player, you know? Maybe you take the advanced stats and you decide he's not a top 10 player in the league, fine--but he's more interesting than most of the rest of the top 20.
2849. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: April 27, 2018 at 09:47 PM (#5661995)
If James is merely really good, the Cavaliers have no shot. George Hill being out hurts them a lot because Calderon is playing a lot more minutes than he should be and he can't play defense on the pick and roll. Why Lue is playing him so much, and really marginalizing the newer guys is somewhat perplexing to me.

Love being at less than his best and Hill being out means the Cavs are done in this series IMHO. Sure, LeBron could go for 45-50 in the next game but even that might not be enough.
   2850. sardonic Posted: April 27, 2018 at 09:56 PM (#5662006)
I haven't really watched Oladipo at all this season until now, but he's really a tidy player now.

I can see Lebron pulling out another all time performnace to pull out Game 7 at home, but it's hard to imagine the Cavs coming out of the East at this point.

It'll be interesting to see what the Cavs do if LeBron James stays this year. This team isn't a title contender. That's obvious. Can they do anything in the offseason to make them better? Hard to say. They are in Cap hell.

Westbrook is a lot easier to admire when you don't root for, and especially when you aren't employed by, his team.

I can see Lebron pulling out another all time performnace to pull out Game 7 at home, but it's hard to imagine the Cavs coming out of the East at this point.

Very hard to imagine--at least until you get to considering the competition.

Suppose (I know it's hard to picture such an unlikely thing occurring, but just suppose) that Joel Embiid gets injured sometime in the next three weeks. Toronto seems to be up to its familiar April-May hijinks; Boston is, well, Boston. Take Embiid away from Philly and it seems likely as not that LeBron can lower his head and bully his way through the rest of the East by himself.

Don't take Embiid away from Philly, however, and it's hard to see LeBron taking four out of seven from them. Unless he gets a little help from his friends in the gray shirts, that is ;)

   2859. tshipman Posted: April 27, 2018 at 10:18 PM (#5662031)
I think my basic read on the Cavs/Pacers series is as follows:

1. Pacers are the slightly better team (maybe by about a 3 pt margin at a neutral site)
2. LeBron can will the Cavs to victory with an absolutely phenomenal performance.
3. Cavs can also win with shooting variance (both positive on their side and negative on Pacers' side).
4. There have been a lot of defensive adjustments by the Cavs, but I think they mostly don't matter. Either Oladipo has figured out the trapping, or he was just missing makeable shots.
5. Jeff Green is killing the Cavs. Green is -41 through six games. Tristan Thompson sure makes a lot of money, can he really be worse than Green?
2860. SPICEY WITH A SIDE OF BEER ON A BABYYYYYYY Posted: April 27, 2018 at 10:19 PM (#5662033)
Toronto looked a bit shaky against Washington, but hell, I'm not sure Washington is worse than Cleveland. In fact I think they're maybe better when you factor in they were healthy and engaged in the playoffs.

Indiana really could win game 7. Man, the first round has been kinda fun I think. Big game starting in 12 minutes!

Depends how the draft plays out, but I don't think there's any way Portland fans will or should be the most unhappy. They've got a fun, good team. Yeah, they aren't gonna win a title but they are a team I'd happily have a regular season package for and buy tickets too. And you can always hold out hope they get a Kawhi type pick and become a real contender.

Ongoing, "what exactly is continuation anymore?" department:

Royce O'Neal takes a bump, a bunny hop, gathers to shoot, gets the continuation call.

Again, I thought this year that wasn't the rule.

I also didn’t like that and1. I think Utah is gonna regret missing all these free throws if they don’t stop

This is a sloppy ugly game.

I don't like Ingles being asked to initiate the offense here.
2886. Tom Cervo, backup catcher Posted: April 28, 2018 at 12:46 AM (#5662109)
With no Rubio Ingles is their best initiator.
2887. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: April 28, 2018 at 12:47 AM (#5662110)
You're probably right. Can't play Mitchell the whole 48.
2888. Tom Cervo, backup catcher Posted: April 28, 2018 at 12:49 AM (#5662113)
And Mitchell is great at driving to score and he makes some insane passes, but he doesn't do a good job getting the Jazz into their system if he's the PG.
2889. Tom Cervo, backup catcher Posted: April 28, 2018 at 12:52 AM (#5662119)
Speaking of horrible continuation calls...guess I can't complain when Jazz have gotten it too.
2890. SPICEY WITH A SIDE OF BEER ON A BABYYYYYYY Posted: April 28, 2018 at 12:52 AM (#5662121)
I feel dirty for having Jae Crowder in my top 50

I no longer want the Lakers to sign Paul George.
2893. Tom Cervo, backup catcher Posted: April 28, 2018 at 01:02 AM (#5662126)
How can the Jazz be so bad at rebounding with Gobert and Favors playing.

Jae Crowder is not on a bargain deal.
2896. SPICEY WITH A SIDE OF BEER ON A BABYYYYYYY Posted: April 28, 2018 at 01:08 AM (#5662132)
Paul George was fouled there by Gobert
2897. Tom Cervo, backup catcher Posted: April 28, 2018 at 01:08 AM (#5662133)
Man I for sure thought they would call the foul on Gobert. That's a tough call and had that happened to Jazz in same situation I would have been pissed.
2898. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: April 28, 2018 at 01:09 AM (#5662134)
Stunned George didn't get the whistle there, but glad. No foul, just a lot of foul-seeking.
   2899. tshipman Posted: April 28, 2018 at 01:09 AM (#5662135)
The end of this game has not been well officiated.

The refs tonight have sucked. I was rooting hard for Utah but you just can’t hold your whistle there
