OT - 2017 NFL thread

Free agent NFL cornerback Antonio Cromartie and his wife Terricka announced the birth of baby girl Jhett Paxton, born Aug. 30.

This is the couple’s sixth child, and it is Cromartie’s fourteenth. By our count, it is his third child since (supposedly) having a vasectomy during his tenure with the New York Jets in 2013.

howie roseman is doing great work this offseason.

i know DE bennett, DT ngata, LB nelson and DB worley are all projected to be backups, but that's a lot of talent and experience to add considering the eagles were supposed to be 20MM over the cap.

the eagles should also nab a pair of 4th/5th round comp picks next year due to the losses of bradham and burton.

i'd still like to get an experienced WR (or two) on the cheap, and it'd be nice to find a way to keep patrick robinson, but there's not much more to do than that.

well, bradham's back. i'm not a huge fan of that because of his age (29), the amount of money it took (40MM), the loss of a compensation pick (likely to be at the end of the 4th round in 2019) and because the position of LB, while still important, is no longer the engine of a defense that it used to be.

the eagles LB corps already has two good starters (hicks and kendricks), two good role players (nelson and goode) and a handful of young special teamers who might still develop (joe walker, kamu grugier hill, nate gerry, etc).

bradham is reliable, versatile, productive, but i'd have rather spent that money somewhere else.

maybe they trade kendricks to recoup some money and a draft pick.

i'm not too worried about roseman keeping the cap under control or finding 53 talented players to fill out the roster, but i'd do a few things a bit differently.

The Jets traded up to third, presumably to grab a QB, but that doesn't make sense to me. They can't guarantee that Darnold and Rosen will be there (even if the Giants don't want a QB they can trade down), Mayfield seems like he would have been available at 6 and Josh Allen is bad.

if they had one more loss, they could have had the 3rd pick outright. instead, they gave away three 2nd round picks and they don't even know who they're going to wind up with.

that GM should be fired out of a cannon, into a brick wall.

i'd take allen over mayfield, but i also wouldn't take mayfield at all.

either way, trading up three 2nd round picks to move up to #3 is a terrible use of resources.

Yeah this move is garbage unless they have inside information on what Browns/Giants are going to do. Maybe they "know" the Browns are going to Barkely it up? And they are happy to get Darnold or Rosen?

But assuming the Browns want of of those guys... they just take them 1st and Barkely 4th? So ... the Jets want Barkely and think he would not make it 6?

Eh, Jets. Whaddyagonnado?
2109. PASTE, Now with Extra Pitch and Extra Stamina Posted: March 20, 2018 at 05:26 PM (#5640580)
I think the Browns are going to take Barkley #1 and whichever of Darnold/Rosen gets to #4.

The story I heard is that the Jets have exhaustively looked at all the available QBs and are confident in their assessment, thus expect to get a QB they like with #3. Even if true, being the Jets, they are likely to screw it up anyways.

This is first draft in my buffer where we don't know the first pick going in. To the extent that drafts are interesting, I suppose this one is, with the uncertainty surrounding the first several picks, and will the Browns keep being Brown-y.

That being said, the reason this is one of my favorite days on the sports calendar is because we can finally stop hearing speculation about the damn draft.

I keep hearing that the Giants aren't likely to take a QB because they have confidence in the future of the 37-year-old Eli Manning. It's stupid on so many levels.

there are two reasons for the uncertainty:
1, noone thinks these QBs are very good
2, we don't know what any homeless people have told the felon that owns browns recently

My sense is that there are a fair number of good-but-not-great QB prospects in this draft, the kind of guy you'd be happy to take in the top 15. But since it's overall a weak draft other than those QBs, and a lot of teams near the top are in need of a QB, they're all going to go a lot higher than they might in another year.

I think Rosen and Darnold are about as good as prospects as Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson, who went 10 and 12 last year. But other circumstances mean they're both going to be taken in the top three.

rosen, darnold, jackson and watson are legit top 15 QBs, but none of them are in the winston/marriota/goff/wentz/luck/rgIII tier. mahomes, allen, trubisky and mayfield were/are all going to be taken too high.

this draft is barren after the first 5-7 QBs. most years have some guys you can talk yourself into liking, or who might be able to develop, but the day 3 crop of QBs this year is as ugly as i've ever seen it.

2120. there isn't anything to do in buffalo but 57i66135 Posted: April 26, 2018 at 07:55 PM (#5661429)
i'm pretty sure the eagles are going to nab an extra pick or three along the way, but assuming there are no trades, this is my ideal eagles mock draft:

1.32: dj chark, WR, LSU -- he's tall, long, fast, explosive and he wins 50/50 balls down the field.
4.130: troy fumagalli, TE, IOWA -- good pass catcher, good on special teams
4.132: marcus allen, S, PSU -- developmental strong safety, hybrid LB, special teams.
5.169: marcell frazier, DE, MIZZOU -- the eagles could lose 3 of their top 4 DEs next year, so getting a guy who can develop is pretty important.
6.206: quadree henderson, WR/RB/KR/PR, pitt -- explosive quickness on kick returns/gadget plays
7.250: justin jackson, RB, NW -- versatile third down back

the good:
chark can blow the top off defenses
special teams gets at least three important additions
fumagalli can be an immediate contributor

the bad:
not a lot of poundage
no OL. again.
too many situational players

there's a difference between wasting a pick, and not getting full value from it. sachi brown didn't waste picks when he traded carson wentz and deshaun watson, he got full value from them by trading them. i don't think a lot of these top 10 teams got full value from their picks this year.

NYJ: A - getting darnold at 3 is a coup
BUF: A - good work getting the QB they wanted, and edmonds is a beast at LB
SD: A - james fell into their lap, but they still got him.
GB: A - the guy they picked is fine, but getting an extra #1 next year is huge
ARI: A - if you get that pick right, you're set up for a decade-plus of playoff contention

CLE: F - i don't buy mayfield as a franchise QB
TB: D - great trade, vea's an awful pick
OAK: D - miller is okay, but i don't buy him as a franchise tackle

This is the hottest take I think I've seen this year on the draft. I know a few dozen Giants fans. 100% of them either wanted Barkley at 2 over any of the QB's or thought he was the guy to take if there and the QB they wanted (which varied amongst them) wan't there.

i think that's pretty poor value for the eagles, but nearly anyone who could have traded for jackson had already chosen not to take him, so they didn't have a lot of leverage.

had to be done, though. i'm pretty sure the eagles will get someone good at 52 (possibly even my guy chark), and even though the extra pick won't convey until next year, there's a decent chance it'll wind up in the top 40.

Baker Mayfield was the analytics pick. I think the Giants must either have tanked last year really hard, or they think their team is much better than it is to draft a RB #2. I think they should rebuild.

their QB is 37, their defense is bad, they have no offensive line, and their GM is publicly feuding with their best player.

it seems like a healthy situation.

well, they lost a couple of close ones early, lost almost of their WRs (including OBJ), their OL cratered, dissension rose, their running game was lousy, their secondary regressed, their old QB was not good....

hmm

"I keep hearing that the Giants aren't likely to take a QB because they have confidence in the future of the 37-year-old Eli Manning. It's stupid on so many levels."

Giants and Jets execs don't care for each other, and of course they share the same stadium. Darnold is only 20. if that kid makes it big, "awkward" won't begin to describe it - even assuming 5 stud years from Barkley.

the joke's on akers. hayden hurst was born in 1993, so he saw two of them.

i don't love goedert, but it's a fine pick. good value, good upside, he's NFL ready, TE was as close as to a need as the eagles had and i'm sure the eagles have a plan to get production out of 2 TE formations with him and ertz.

a lot of good RBs are still available for the eagles. hines, ballage, adams, walton, wadley, jackson, samuels, and a bunch more.

a lot of great value picks, too. josh sweat, equanimeous st brown, daeshawn hamilton, tyrell crosby, averett, brown, tolliver, allen, whitehead, mcfadden, maddox.

in terms of trading up/trading down/staying put, there really isn't a bad option for the eagles. trading up gets the guy they want, staying put will get them a really good prospect, moving back could add another pick next year without hurting the team this year.

i'd like to get a top return guy, though. hines, ballage, maddox and my guy quadree henderson could all fill that need.
2145. there isn't anything to do in buffalo but 57i66135 Posted: April 28, 2018 at 02:01 PM (#5662239)
i don't love the maddox pick, but i get it and i'm good with it. he can help immediately as a returner and as a slot corner, but i'd have preferred someone with....you know what, nevermind. this is a damn good pick. if he breaks a few punt returns and is good in the slot, that's a great pick.

i love the josh sweat pick. great value at pick 130 and a ton of upside. he's an elite athlete, with size, speed and power. the eagles could have a gaping hole at DE after next year since brandon graham is in the last year of his contract, chris long is flirting with retirement and michael bennett is (allegedly) assaulting random 70 year old paraplegic female security guards, so considering upside/impact/need, this could wind up being the most important pick in the whole draft.

Sure!

As a Washington, D.C., magazine writer, Mark Leibovich has devoted himself to the study of aging, needy white men. But four years ago, the New York Times Magazine correspondent pushed those subjects to the back burner. He began writing Big Game, a book about the NFL and its owners. For Leibovich, the change of venue came as a welcome relief. For here was a new group of aging, needy white men—and they seemed totally unfamiliar with the rules of magazine writing.

“There was far more ‘You’ll take care of me, right?’ in football than in politics,” Leibovich said recently. Case in point: In 2014, Patriots owner Bob Kraft told Leibovich that Boston was “a village compared to New York.” Sensing the comment would set off a tsunami warning at WEEI, a Patriots PR man asked for it to be considered “off the record.”

Leibovich includes Kraft’s quote in Big Game. Weaponizing an off-the-record request as he once did in a profile of Chris Matthews, Leibovich also prints the PR man’s plea for amnesty. In both politics and the NFL, the dark arts of information management must be kept at bay.

After years of rotten behavior, NFL owners finally have the muckrakers they deserve. When the owners get together to try to save the league, ESPN’s Don Van Natta Jr. and Seth Wickersham tell us what really happened. All we’ve lacked—outside Van Natta’s profile of Jerry Jones—was a portrait of what these owners are like up close: their pettiness and intramural rivalries and eccentricities.

In Big Game, Leibovich asks Jones whether he’d trade his spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame for another Super Bowl ring. Jones hems and haws—he’d been drinking—and then says he wouldn’t. A Cowboys PR man asks for a “mulligan”; both Jones’s comment and the mulligan request are in the book.

The Falcons’ Arthur Blank says he’s miffed that Kraft celebrated the Patriots overcoming a 28-3 deficit in the Super Bowl by putting 283 diamonds in his Super Bowl rings. (When Blank’s words were reported accurately, another PR meltdown ensued.) Jets owner Woody Johnson, Leibovich writes, looks “slightly daydreamy and disoriented … like an overgrown third-grader who collects toy trains and rotten quarterbacks.”

In April, Leibovich and his Times colleague Ken Belson unearthed an audio recording of a 2017 owners-players summit about the recent wave of protests. Bills owner Terry Pegula can be heard worrying about Donald Trump’s next tweet.
"“God, [Terry Pegula] comes off like a tool. Basically saying, ‘We can’t inflame Donald.’ The way that he was living in fear and just giving voice to short-term thinking … trying to outrun the next tweet when you’re running a multibillion-dollar business that can just print money. It’s stunning.” —Mark Leibovich"

“God, he comes off like a tool,” Leibovich told me. “Basically saying, ‘We can’t inflame Donald.’ The way that he was living in fear and just giving voice to short-term thinking … trying to outrun the next tweet when you’re running a multibillion-dollar business that can just print money. It’s stunning.”

Leibovich rolled his eyes at the practice of calling NFL owners “Mr. So-and-So.” “Dan Snyder, he supposedly cares most about being ‘Mr.,’” Leibovich said. “I actually asked him in my brief time with him what I should call him. I wanted to be told ‘Call me Mr. Snyder’ because it would be a great thing to quote him on. But he dodged the bullet and said ‘Dan.’”

Snyder didn’t get away scot-free. In Big Game, Leibovich writes that “there are venereal diseases tougher to get rid of than” Snyder.
