OT - 2018 NBA Summer Potpourri (finals, draft, free agency, Colangelo dragging)

I estimate only 10-12 Primates care about the NBA, none of whom can be bothered to curate their own thread to avoid detracting from what this site is really about:  complaints about mayonnaise.

Me, last July:
I was inclined to say how bad can 2 years/9 million be, but Woj says the 2nd year is a player option! Who gives a player option to Ron ####### Baker?

Shams, today:
New York Knicks guard Ron Baker has exercised his $4.5M player option for next season, league sources tell Yahoo.

I have a draft question. I usually watch the Draft Express videos to familiarize myself with prospects, but those guys have moved to ESPN insider. Are they producing new videos there? I know there was also a lawsuit by the NCAA earlier this season about use of their footage for draft-type videos.

Keith Pompey @PompeyOnSixers
#sixers’ Bryan Colangelo did not attend today’s and yesterday’s agent-run predraft workouts on the West Coast, according to league sources. He was at a predraft workouts on Tuesday when The Ringer report broke.

76ers: here’s an official statement about Brett Brown w/ a quote from Bryan Colangelo but no way we’re gonna hold a press conference BECAUSE YOU KNOW WHY and please don’t contact us again until next season thanks bye pic.twitter.com/6MUdvInw1K

Brandon Lee Gowton
John Clark says Colangelo stands by his statement that he gave to The Ringer. Didn’t send any messages on Twitter. Fully unaware of anything. Zero knowledge of them.

Clark says Colangelo looked “sick to his stomach” when he talked to him. Searching for answers.

"The 76ers are expected to finish their investigation into allegations against Bryan Colangelo within the next few days, if not Friday, according to league sources."

“The only way that he’ll get out of it is if he comes with evidence that somebody set him up,” said a league executive, speaking on condition of anonymity. “If it is out there where they can’t prove either way, I don’t think he’ll keep his job. And if there’s involvement with a family member, it doesn’t look like he has a chance either.”

the most favorable interpretation:
his wife is very sensitive to criticism of him, has very poor judgement and way too much free time. he vented his grievances to her, in private, throughout the last 10 years, and she's aired them online, anonymously, for at least the last 18 months, without his knowledge.

Philadelphia ownership has shown little, if any, inclination to separate Colangelo's culpability in the matter should a family member or close associate be proven responsible for the postings, league sources said.

Many members of Colangelo's staff in Philadelphia are bracing for his dismissal, sources said.
i'm still not buying it, yet.

The good news is that now Philly can offer LeBron the de facto GM power he would no doubt require (likely by letting him handpick the next GM who will in turn fire Brown and hire a coach of LeBron’s choosing).

Colangelo’s job is on the line, especially given the ownership group’s desire to keep internal team information as private as possible. At least one high-ranking Sixers official is fighting for Colangelo’s job, a person familiar with details told USA TODAY Sports.

Spike Eskin @SpikeEskin
Doug Collins et al were in charge of Sixers personnel for two years. Sam Hinkie in charge for two and a half years. The Colangelos for two and a half years. Hard to have success with that much regular change in leadership.

@renmiked
@Michael_Levin “how do you not know your wife is a gay parking attendant that is paralyzed” maybe the greatest podcast quote in history.

also, this is a thing that happened:
The GM’s office is a big, beautiful space in a prime part of the facility. It has two glass walls — one that looks out onto the practice courts and one that borders the office section of the building. You can see everything inside the office, which is where the automatic electric blinds come in. According to Son of Sam, it was initially designed as a war room and/or conference room. He said the original plans, from the Sam Hinkie days, called for the GM’s office to be much more modest — a smaller room he called "nothing special" that was located by the parking lot where the players enter. That changed, SOS said, when Colangelo took over. He didn’t want the small office. He wanted the big glass box.

for anyone wondering:
bryan colangelo is still employed
he has not been suspended (or otherwise removed from any formal decision making process)
neither he, nor his wife, have been interviewed by the law firm the sixers hired to investigate whatever the hell happened.

this may be baseless speculation, but if the sixers were trying to find a way to keep large adult son, this seems a lot like how it would happen. give him (and his wife) plenty of time to get their stories straight, leak that he's expected to get fired on thursday, then friday, then saturday, then monday and now wednesday (but maybe sooner!), let the investigation drag out until the topic stops trending on tweeter, and in the end, they can just slap him on the wrist and send his wife to the betty ford clinic.

meanwhile, colangelo hasn't interviewed any draft prospects or attended any pre-draft workouts since this news broke, and the sixers top FA target is cracking jokes at a guy who's notoriously thin-skinned.

oh, and if the sixers do wind up firing him, they've lost at least a week that they could have used to get a new GM up to speed with current players, the scouting staff and the rest of the front office.

####.

This was the analysis I was hoping to see. Don't know if anyone did it and I missed. What was the win probability (1) at the point Hill was fouled (2) after he made the first FT (3) after he missed the second but before JR rebounded (4) once CLE had live ball possession (5) if CLE had dead ball possession.

My guesses:

Still less than 50/50 at the time of the foul, because GSW would get the ball back and they are such a good offense that in 4.7 seconds or so I expect them to get a better than 50/50 shot opportunity, especially on Cleveland's D. Certainly a bit better after Hill makes the first free throw. Maybe 40% before the first FT, 45% after he makes it.

Pretty low after the miss, the most likely outcome is GS rebounding the ball, and getting fouled. Maybe 10%

I don't know if live ball possession or a time out is better. Sometimes you best chance comes with the element of surprise, where with a dead ball Cleveland can design a shot, but GSW can also align their defense. At that point I'd say 75% for Cleveland, since they can win with a score or else get to play OT.

Mike Beuoy @inpredict

Some win probability numbers on game 1:
The offensive foul reversal swung win probability by 28%. GSW would have been at 19% down 2 w/o possession. With the reversal, the were at 47%.
1/

@inpredict
George Hill's 2nd missed free throw cost the Cavs -27% in win probability. 56% pre-miss, 29% post-miss.
2/

@inpredict
JR's rebound added back 8% win probability for the Cavs. But his decision to dribble the ball out cost the Cavs 14% in win probability.

I wondered what the Hill probability was prior to shooting the first free throw - I'd rather treat them as one action, rather than two.
   37. DCA Posted: June 05, 2018 at 03:48 PM (#5686376)
according to http://stats.inpredictable.com/

GSW win percentage was 61% when Curry hit a free throw to put them up 107-106

41% when Hill was fouled
33% after Hill made the first FT
56% after he missed the second
41% after JR got the rebound (nice symmetry there)

Then 50% at the beginning of OT. So obviously this does not adjust for team quality or home court.

Adrian Wojnarowski @wojespn
ESPN Sources: Philadelphia 76ers ownership met Tuesday night to weigh Bryan Colangelo’s fate in wake of probe.

Jon Johnson @jonjohnsonwip
According to @Adrian Wojnarowski, Sixers ownership met tonight in NY to discuss whether the findings of investigation "necessitates his(Colangelo) firing."

John Barchard @JohnBarchard
Per @jonjohnsonwip now on WIP, the Sixers are holding out hope that Bryan can continue as GM. Unreal. Also says the Jerry is using as much power as he has

Sarah Todd @NBASarah
I think the tweets and the info shared is beyond damning. If a conversation about his future is happening tho, and someone is trying to make a case they’re probably latching onto nuance. In the end, I don’t think it will matter though.

Jon Johnson @jonjohnsonwip
Meeting for several hours certainty suggests a struggle to decide. #Sixers

Mike Chiodo @MHC_76
Jon Johnson, on WIP, reports that the reason the investigation is taking so long is NOT because the Sixers are looking for reason to fire him with cause and avoid a lawsuit, but that ownership is holding out hope that the investigation will prove BC innocent. Unreal.

I’ll take the Celtics again and continue my trend of taking guys worse than the actual Celtics.

I predicted he would survive. Don't underestimate the power of nepotism. I hope I'm wrong, but I suspect they'll bring him back, or promote him out of the way.

Please put me down for the Suns, unless there's a serious Suns fan that wants them. In that case, I'll take the Clippers if nobody else wants them.

Tom, want to rep the Jazz this year? I picked for them last year and somehow snagged both John Collins and Kyle Kuzma, but I have no problem admitting that was entirely luck (well, and homerism in Kuzma's case) since I don't follow college ball at all.

I'll take the Warriors again.

Taking the liberty of assigning some of the volunteers to teams who I don't think will otherwise get taken quickly. Feel free to overrule if someone else wants one of these teams.

Thoughts for Game 3. It's kind of annoying that they make Cleveland have a 9pm home start. I see Iguodala is upgraded to questionable.

LeBron knows this is a must win, and Golden State isn't quite as ruthless as I feel like the GOAT team should be. I think Cleveland probably jumps on them early, Golden State does their 3rd quarter thing, and then it comes down to the wire. I guess I'll take LeBron. It would be kind of entertaining, in its own way, see Golden State come out firing on all cylinders. I could see Cleveland totally implode and LeBron check out mentally if they are getting blasted midway through the game.

All the injury talk is about Iggy, but did you see the way LeBron's left eye looked in G2? Can he even see out of that thing? I'm surprised more players haven't gone to the goggles with all the fingers in eyes that can happen.

It was very very red. But usually that just causes irritation and itching, and does not really impact vision. /not an eye doctor

But I would think that any kind of goggles would severely handicap a player's peripheral vision. So I would not want to go with that other than as a necessity if I were playing.

Kerr. Autocomplete...wouldn't think I've talked about Kerry Wood enough on my phone for that to be the case.

Oriole, what would you want in addition to Orlando's #6 for #1? Everyone on the Magic is tradable.

(Although, maybe it's not kosher to consummate trades before all the teams are taken?)

this is absurdly great.

player A
A thick-framed forward who projects as a do-it-all role player but can reach another level if he develops his ball handling.
SHADES OF: Derrick Coleman, Tobias Harris, Deshaun Thomas

player B
A combo forward who can space the floor and defend multiple positions.
SHADES OF: Jonas Jerebko, Brian Scalabrine, Bobby Simmons

player C
A fearless offensive wing who can score in a variety of ways and displays playmaking upside.
SHADES OF: Jodie Meeks, Courtney Lee, Nik Stauskas

player D
A knockdown shooter with NBA-level instincts, but his athletic limitations likely put a cap on his upside.
SHADES OF: Kevin Martin, Denzel Valentine, Seth Curry

Is this a trick where they're actually the top guys, like we're supposed to think D is Landry Shamet but it's really Trae Young.

Why are there two threads?

people didn't want the NBA finals chatter to get swamped by colangelo/mock draft/offseason talk.

Well, it appears that now people have abandoned the other thread, so it's going to be swamped here unless a few people start posting finals stuff in that thread.
   83. there isn't anything to do in buffalo but 57i66135 Posted: June 06, 2018 at 08:56 PM (#5687327)
And now it's Bryan Colangelo's turn to whack away at Chris Bosh.

If you missed it, on 590 The Fan in Toronto on Monday, the Raptors' general manager said that Bosh chose to sit out several games down the stretch last season, despite the fact that the team was battling for the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs:

Despite limited swelling and any excessive damage on an MRI, he felt like he needed to sit for six more games. I'm not even questioning Chris' injury. I'm telling you he was cleared to play subject to tolerance on his part, and the tolerance just apparently wasn't there and he chose not to play.

OUCH.

If Dan Gilbert's letter was the work of a delusional, impulsive maniac, Colangelo's was a surgical, high-precision, serial killer style strike.

"The tolerance just apparently wasn't there and he chose not to play." Colangelo didn't call Bosh a traitor, he didn't call Bosh a quitter. Bryan Colangelo called Chris Bosh a #####.

must have been a productive meeting last night:
@PompeyOnSixers
#Sixers co-managing partners Josh Harris and David Blitzer will be the ones determining Bryan Colangelo’s fate with some input from CEO Scott O’Neil.
glad it only took 8 days to sort that out.

These Rodney Hood minutes are not going well. Remember when he wasn't one of the worst players in the NBA?

   89. JC in DC Posted: June 06, 2018 at 09:42 PM (#5687365)
Yeah, you just can't play Hood now. You can't have another no cover guy.
   90. spivey Posted: June 06, 2018 at 09:54 PM (#5687375)
Cleveland is missing a lot of layups here. This game is sloppy and frantic. Cleveland needs to up their game, they've kind of stagnated a bit.
   91. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: June 06, 2018 at 10:04 PM (#5687383)
I'm so convinced the warriors still win, this Cavs lead feels anticlimactic if that makes sense.
   92. spivey Posted: June 06, 2018 at 10:06 PM (#5687386)
Durant's been pretty special tonight. He's keeping Golden State in this game.
   93. sardonic Posted: June 06, 2018 at 10:08 PM (#5687387)
Curry and Klay have missed a ton of shots they usually make, and Cleveland is still only up 10. It seems ridiculous to describe a team as "only" down 10, but I just have no fear of this Cavs team. I guess with Curry and Draymond both in foul trouble that could be trouble down the road in this game.
   94. spivey Posted: June 06, 2018 at 10:10 PM (#5687388)
Rodney Hood! Back from the dead!

They could call contact more tightly -- both ways -- in the post. No more of those ludicrous backdowns into the post where the offensive player dislodges the defensive player 4-5 times over the course of 3 seconds, and more calls on body contact and hacks on shots in close to the hoop. How the hell is all that incidental contact?

nah. in fact, there should be no offensive fouls during charles barkley counts. if an offensive post player has a size advantage, he should be allowed to plow through his defender without having to worry about getting called for a foul on some bullshit flop or push off or elbow to the chin.
   96. PJ Martinez Posted: June 06, 2018 at 10:14 PM (#5687392)
I don't think players should be allowed to push off or throw elbows to chins but I agree that LeBron didn't foul Curry there and that Curry fell down simply he is so much smaller than LeBron (it didn't look like a flop to me).
   97. zenbitz Posted: June 06, 2018 at 10:32 PM (#5687396)
3rd quarter #######.
   98. JC in DC Posted: June 06, 2018 at 10:36 PM (#5687399)
Is there an argument that Durant is the MVP for GSW?
   99. spivey Posted: June 06, 2018 at 10:36 PM (#5687400)
This feels more like Golden State not playing well than Cleveland playing well. Outside of the early high energy and some Love shot making and good Lebron play, I've not seen much. Even LeBron's missed a few layups and not at his best.

ALSO! TSHIP ALERT. CLEVELAND OUT FREE THROWED 15 TO 1 AT HOME DESPITE BEING WAY BETTER AT FREE THROWS.
