NBC's down-and-distance chryon is yellow, which everyone is conditioned to believe means "flag".

This game could go for 20 quarters and Charleston Southern still might not score.

Kansas State is losing to South Dakota in the 4th, also. Might be a dark night in that state. Even more than usual, I mean.

What's this Andy Reid bullshit down two scores? You can't be taking 35 seconds between plays.

Jim Harbaugh, the most overrated coach in college football history, is now 8-8 in his last 16 games at Michigan. Urban Meyer has lost eight games total in six years at Ohio State.
   108. greenback slays lewks Posted: September 01, 2018 at 11:45 PM (#5737565)
Harbaugh is a good coach, a clear improvement over his predecessor. I expect his successor also will be less talented than Harbaugh. Unfortunately he can't figure out this whole offensive line thing, which means he's not a great coach. I'd be more than happy if he stayed at Michigan for another 15 years, but, yes, some people should be embarrassed at what they wrote when Harbaugh was hired.

This is potentially a big issue for Akron, which is supposed to get a $1.17 million guarantee. The game contract isn't precise about what would happen if it became impossible to play because of this type of storm, but it might be void.

That "context" is fair enough but doesn't provide much of a defense, IMO ... it looks like something you could say about almost any top 40-ish program. Most halfway decent teams lose consistently to more highly ranked opponents and especially on the road. Often those games are reasonably close.

It's not like anyone's saying they've morphed into Kansas or something. But you can find a similar tale of woe throughout the land.

   117. . . . . . . Posted: September 02, 2018 at 10:09 PM (#5737832)
As a Michigan fan, I think they’ve basically gotten no breaks for about 5 years. Sure. But that’s what it takes to produce plenty of NFL talent and still go 1-6 against your rivals.

The narrative is very different if Michigan doesn’t drop a punt against MSU or have a monsoon roll in the second half of a game they’re losing to MSU or if a spot is 1/2” short in the OSU game. But at the end of the day, it shouldn’t be that close. Michigan has way more resources than MSU or Wisconsin and wasn’t coming off of massive sanctions like PSU. Even if true talent, they’re a pick em with those three teams, that’s still a disappointing job by Harbaugh, especially since the weakness is in the side of the ball that he manages. On defense, where he lets Brown and Mattison do their thing, they’ve been a top 5 team, heck, probably the best defense in the country outside of Bama and maybe Clemson.

   123. CFBF Rides The Zombie Ice Dragon Posted: September 08, 2018 at 11:41 AM (#5740879)
I'm really interested in Florida's next three games - Kentucky, at Tennessee, Colorado State. It's not so much about outcomes - it would be surprising and disappointing if the Gators don't come out of that run 4-0. But while UK and UT are lower tier SEC teams and Colorado State is just plum bad, they're (more or less) respectable opponents, and they'll put a few guys into the NFL. Kentucky has a famous streak to break and the Tennessee game is in Knoxville, so they'll both be motivated.

If the Gators can easily handle those three schools and put up a bunch of points in the process, it'll provide some optimism that UF can actually win the swing games against MSU, Mizzou, LSU and FSU (they ain't beating Georgia). If they struggle through a bunch of 24-10 games in which Franks keeps putting up 12-20, 115-yard passing lines, it'll probably mean the Gators aren't ready for prime time.

*** siren ***

Houston zips down the field on its first possession, picks Tate off on a high throw over the middle, then goes right down and scores again.
   125. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 08, 2018 at 12:34 PM (#5740888)
Arizona went three-and-out then stopped Houston just short on a third down, but the Cougars rushed to the line and converted the fourth down before scoring on a coverage bust the next play. 21-0.
   126. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 08, 2018 at 12:46 PM (#5740893)
After another three-and-out for Arizona, Houston goes deep twice in a row, the first time almost resulting in a spectacular one-handed catch, and the second a straight drop of what would've been an 81-yard touchdown. Looks like Houston is going to be fun as hell and perhaps not waste the last year of Oliver after all.

Wisconsin fumbles on 1st-and-goal and continues to trail New Mexico 7-3 in the second quarter. Boy, would that be something.

USF-Ga Tech is sort of interesting in a constant lead change kind of way.

Neither looks like a particularly great team though.

Did Arizona really just punt on 4-and-9 from midfield while trailing by 20 with 5 minutes to go??!!?? What exactly was Sumlin's plan to win at that point?

Nebraska is trying to run down the clock while clinging to a one-point lead, a task made more difficult by their insistence on snapping the ball with double digits left on the play clock.

I do a lot of complaining about teams that are content to turtle, run some clock, then give the ball back, so I'm not gonna slag a team that recognizes the best way to run out the clock is by continuing to pick up yards and goes about that in its usual manner.

Can't win many ballgames -3 in TO margin, allowing 3rd and a mile conversions and then gifting a first down on the stupid penalty. This is a much better looking Nebraska squad, but they will operate with no margin of error this season.

This is the sort of comment that will come back to haunt me by the end of the day, but Franks looks about a thousand times better than last year. Much more confident and decisive.
   145. Brian White Posted: September 08, 2018 at 08:21 PM (#5741027)
...what on Earth are the refs reviewing this play for? Franks wasn't close to the end zone, and the spot looks right.

I already dislike Ole Miss's QB. Not because of anything he did, mind you. It's just that I keep glancing up at the ESPN crawl, and see "Ta'amu: 448 yards" and think, "Wow, Texas A&M is actually moving the ball pretty well against Clemson."
   151. CFBF Rides The Zombie Ice Dragon Posted: September 08, 2018 at 09:39 PM (#5741101)

   153. AuntBea calls himself Sky Panther Posted: September 08, 2018 at 10:25 PM (#5741129)
Crazy play in the Clemson game. I thought it was like 60-70% likely to be outside the pylon, but the call on the fied was fumble through the end zone, so probably the right call not to overturn. Even with a TD there A&M would have needed a 2-point conversion to tie, but A&M almost certain to lose now.
   154. Brian White Posted: September 08, 2018 at 10:29 PM (#5741130)
I hate that 'fumble through the end zone is a touchback' rule.

But man, what a dumb decision by the A&M receiver. It's okay to get pushed out at the 2. No sense in stretching the ball while trying to transfer it at the same time - he was just inviting disaster.
   155. CFBF Rides The Zombie Ice Dragon Posted: September 08, 2018 at 10:29 PM (#5741132)

Clemson is doing just about everything wrong now. Three and out without imagination. Shank of a punt. DPI. Missed INT that bounced into A&M receiver's hands for the TD.

Whew. Spared the most embarrassing loss that I can remember, so I guess that's a plus.

But...it's clear Jimbo left the program a bit of a mess. And though Taggert is a very good recruiter, his coaching has been suspect to say the least. I'm really not sure what to think. Obviously there's a new scheme and a QB coming back from injury, but still...almost losing to a FBS squad is pretty darn worrisome going forward.

There's gotta be a little bit of a Monday hangover from that beatdown, facing a game FBS team. the secondary despite getting torched, really bailed out the Noles tonight with the picks.

the big ten is kinda screwed now, isn't it?

it's way too early to say that definitively, but these early losses by michigan, michigan state, nebraska (and northwestern) could turn out to be problematic if ohio state, wisconsin or penn state stumble against them down the road.

week 3 won't be a cakewalk, either. wisconsin (v. BYU), penn state (kent state), nebraska (troy), iowa (northern iowa) and michigan (SMU) should win, but some of those games could be challenging. ohio state is basically playing a toss-up at TCU.

this stuff will only matter if penn state/wisconsin/ohio state go 11-2 (or maybe 12-1) instead of 13-0, but because of the way penn state has gotten screwed by the committee the last two years, it feels like these early OOC losses can't just be written off.

I don't think BYU is going to pose much of a problem for Wisconsin. They barely beat what is an apparently dreadful Arizona and were hot garbage last year.

sports-reference has penn state 2nd in SRS and 7th in strength of schedule. they do appear to be more vulnerable than i expected, but they also just outscored pitt 37-0 in the 2nd half, so maybe they're not dead yet.

and in related news, that appalachian state QB who shredded penn state in the 4th quarter last week went 14/14 this week at charlotte, with 295 passing yards and 4 TDs (1 rushing)

that's probably true, but i tend to be wary of writing them off since half their team is 28 years old.

probably, but pitt is still a moderately competent power-5 team, playing their only important game of the season, and penn state basically did this to them for an entire half.

I thought I had gone through the five stages of grief about the WVU-NC State game but I realize now I'm still stuck on anger. Not anger at anyone in particular, it was clearly the right call to cancel the game, just anger. Stupid weather.

I guess I'll try to get excited for UT-USC and TCU-O$U. Plus, I'll get to see some of BC-Wake before I leave work today which will be fun. But still, this weekend was one I have been looking forward to all offseason and now I'm just totally drained of enthusiasm.

My wife grew up in Tuscaloosa and has a couple of degrees from 'Bama. She has been refusing to watch their kicks as long as I've known her going back to the Stallings era.

As a map geek, I find this project highly entertaining. WSU-EWU fighting over West Texas is my current favorite.

That map is a great idea.

I was thinking that the great powers would consolidate their power more and more over the season, but then I saw that Colorado State, though ousted from its own territory in Week 0, has found a foothold in Arkansas. This is good news for me, since otherwise Pitt will never be anywhere on the map all season. But shouldn't Colorado State now be like a mesne lord, and all land they conquer goes to their overlords Hawaii?

If Colorado State beats Florida tomorrow (shudder), who gets the shimmering jewel of north-central Florida? Kentucky or CSU?

It's Kentucky's until they lose, if not to Murray State, then certainly to Mississippi State.

Just looking at the map, Vanderbilt will likely fall to ND, so Stanford can do some consolidating if they can beat the Irish in a couple weeks. But the Big 10 is going to own Central CA all year, and the SEC will hang on to Alaska (and Seattle) for the foreseeable future...

Thumbs up to Iowa State on going for 4th-and-5 from the Oklahoma 29. Thumbs down on the call of a hey-what-the-hell 20-yard fade.

Oklahoma's defense has no answers for Hakeem Butler. Unfortunately, the only answer Iowa State's defense has is "don't tackle anybody," so his big day will probably will go for naught.

Holding Oklahoma to a field goal constitutes a win for Iowa State's defense, which is why kicking a field goal from the three to pull within a touchdown was a bad move.

Army hosting 3-0 Hawaii on a beautiful day - an hour north of NYC is a different universe from the Carolinas right and hangs on to win, 28-21.

Army has names on the back of these home uniforms - sort of.
each player's last name apparently is ARMY. maybe they are related.
:)

of course, it works for any military academy.

but which will be the first college football factory to try this as a gimmick?

there may be an I in SMITH - but not in CLEMSON ! or OKLAHOMA ! or PENN STATE !

(good shot the other day of two White Sox relievers side by side, HAMILTON and BURR. headline was PITCHERS DUEL)

Yoon pushes a chip shot and Vanderbilt has a chance to beat Notre Dame, trailing 22-17 with 3:39 left.

And Vandy stays alive via pass interference on 4th-and-10 with 2:04 left.

The couple in this Belk commercial that plays every ad break on the SEC Network are the whitest people in the world. They break new boundaries in the field of whiteness. Nicholas Sparks looks at them and says, "Damn, those are some boring-ass white people."

BYU inexplicably leading Wisconsin after three quarters. This does not bode well for my Fire Sitake movement.

Break up the Jayhawks - KU goes to 2-1 after blowing out Rutgers.

Nice Penn State trolling there Stigs. My grandmother has a better chance of going 11-2 than Penn State does. Not a good team this year.

63-10 over kent state
51-6 over pitt

i'm not convinced that penn state is very good this year, either, but they're at least giving themselves some margin for error in case they wind up in the discussion late in the season.
I don't think BYU is going to pose much of a problem for Wisconsin.

oof.

nebraska also lost (and so did rutgers, maryland and illinois, but they're rutgers, maryland and illinois, so whatever). iowa (northern iowa) and ohio state (TCU) are still left today.

it's only 3 weeks, but the big ten has stepped on every rake that's been put in front of them.

Ole Miss with a 75-yard touchdown on the first play.
