I hope LSU loses anyway, but I really super-dooooper hope so after turtling for a 40+ field goal.
   202. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 15, 2018 at 07:16 PM (#5744930)
Ole Miss with a 75-yard touchdown on the first play.

Gonna have to win 77-73 because the defense remains hobo-urine-soaked garbage.
   203. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 15, 2018 at 08:29 PM (#5744950)
Completely unnecessary hold of a defender who had no hope of making the tackle turns a touchdown into a missed field goal. Brutal.
   204. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 15, 2018 at 08:41 PM (#5744954)
That shouldn't have been a touchdown. Ohio State was out of bounds before recovering the ball.

confirmed by the expert. that was a safety, not a TD. what a bungle

BOOM!

I was so wrong about how this week would unfold but I need to eat some #### about my very specific prediction that BYU would not beat Wisconsin.

I blame Chryst for punting on 4th and short on the BYU side of the field a couple of times early. He sucked today.
   208. Thok Posted: September 15, 2018 at 09:33 PM (#5744975)
With BYU's win over Wisconsin, I'm half wondering if Cal will be ranked this week. They shouldn't be, but they're 3-0, and they beat BYU on the road who beat Wisconsin on the road.

If Robinson could hit on the occasional deep ball, it really feels like TCU would be unstoppable. Everything else has been working.
   210. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 15, 2018 at 10:37 PM (#5744983)
If that's targeting, then outlaw the ####### sport. You can't possibly avoid contact to the head of a player who falls head-first into the facemask of a player with his head up attempting a legal tackle.
   211. Howie Menckel Posted: September 15, 2018 at 10:42 PM (#5744984)
how about this compromise?
you can call that a penalty if you like (trying to promote player safety is a good thing), but NOT throw a star player out of the game for what no one outside of the Columbus city limits would call a cheap shot.

linking the two, automatically, is beyond dumb - and arguably not fair to Ohio State. on a borderline call, you either have to massively screw TCU or lesser screw, if at all, Ohio State. what would pick, as an official?

if you offer a middle ground, then the stakes are lower - and you have two realistic choices for the officials. geesh, is this really that complicated?
   212. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 15, 2018 at 10:50 PM (#5744986)
Ugh. We're going to look back on the Turpin drop at 21-13 as the play that turned the game.
   213. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 15, 2018 at 10:51 PM (#5744987)
Threw it forward.

nah, that's a dirty hit, and he should be gone.

the runner was already going to the ground, the defender changed direction when he saw it and he threw himself at the runner's head. the primary (and in this case, only) point of contact was the runner's head, and the defender made no effort to avoid making forcible contact.

this wasn't a case where the runner's head ducked unexpectedly, or where the defender was trying to pull up, but was already committed. the defender knew what he was doing and he knew who he was doing it to.

I have no idea how the punt even got through that mass of humanity. 999,999 times out of a million, that goes rolling in the end zone for a safety at minimum.

Not that it matters in the end.

Wow i did not have "shovel pass pick 6" on my bingo card
   219. Cowboy Popup Posted: September 15, 2018 at 11:03 PM (#5744993)
Well, TCU looked really good for a while. In the end, having a young QB and a receiving corp that has not been great at catching the ball for a couple of years now set them back too much. They can still get back in it though.

Run defense has looked great.
   220. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 15, 2018 at 11:04 PM (#5744995)
And he finally hits the deep ball.

i'm probably wrong about this, but i think there's a decent chance penn state beats ohio state by 30+ points in two weeks.

i'm still not convinced penn state is actually very good this year, but with the way james franklin is out for blood late in games, if they are better than ohio state, they will be looking for style points.

a few things that might be worth mentioning:
...penn state has had a ton of yards wiped out due to penalties. a bunch of huge plays have been called back, mostly for less than egregious violations.
...penn state has also lost a ton of yards due to drops. some of that may have been weather related, but it's a big part of the reason why mcsorley's passing numbers looks so uninspiring.
...the offensive line is finally legit. they've only allowed 3 sacks in 3 weeks and they've rushed for 200+ yards in all 3 games.

...special teams is up and down. punt and kick returns are legit. the punter is one of the best in the NCAA.
...but the kicker is a true freshman who's only attempted 2 FGs in 3 weeks, and they've given up 2 onside kick recoveries, plus a kickoff return TD.

...i have no clue whatsoever about the defense.
...due to 3 key retirements (starting DE and LB, plus a reserve DE) and 2 key regressions (starting LB and CB), the defense only have one returning starter from last year.
...one slight mitigating factor is that because james franklin rotates alot of players into the game, most of the new starters (3 of 4 starting DBs, a LB, every non-freshman DL) already had significant previous game experience.

Does anybody outside Happy Valley actually care how they looked against Appalachian State (shudder), Pitt, and Kent State?

probably?

with every other big ten contender shitting the bed in non-conference play, penn state v. ohio state might be the only conference game with playoff implications this year, and it's only 2 weeks away.

College Football Empires Map, updated

The Pacific Northwest is Purple and Gold once again, although it's LSU rather than UW. And the Huskies can kiss goodbye their dreams of Western Consolidation when ASU ceded huge swaths of land to SDSU.

   230. PepTech, the Legendary Posted: September 17, 2018 at 03:56 PM (#5745859)
I was going to complain about the best matchup GameDay could come up with this week was Stanford-Oregon, but then I realized they're both ranked and the only viable alternative is Texas A&M - Alabama, which it seems like has happened 12 times in the last four years.

Are we in an era where the SEC dominates college football for the foreseeable future? Everyone else (but Clemson) seems to be playing catchup. The Big10, Big12, and Pac12 just don't seem to have the horses any more. Maybe a team here or there that looks strong enough to compete, but it sure seems the "race" is which SEC team joins 'Bama in the playoff, and Clemson doesn't seem to have any real ACC competition any more. The college football regular season is about as useful as that of the NBA.
   231. Cowboy Popup Posted: September 17, 2018 at 08:56 PM (#5746062)
I don't think O$U is playing catch up. And UGA looked pretty evenly matched with OU last year.

I think Bama skews the perception dramatically. There are probably more high ceiling, high floor programs in the SEC than any other conference but when it comes to programs in the title hunt, there is probably only one other true contender every other year. Often, Bama is head and shoulders above its conference mates as well.

It also helps that USC, Texas, FSU and Miami are down. Those are sky is the limit programs in talent rich states.

Michigan and Pedo State aren't far off, UW will need a higher upside QB to win a title but they don't look like they are going anywhere any time soon.

College football is about a lot more than who wins the national championship. That is why it is better than all other sports.
   232. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: September 17, 2018 at 11:11 PM (#5746176)
Yeah, despite being an alum of a school that won 3 MNCs during my undergrad days, I am much more fond of college football in Sept-Nov. than I am Dec/Jan. The Cliff's notes college football fans (usually NFL honks) that make everything about the playoffs, don't get it. I take more pleasure in watching say LSU at AU this past weekend, or watching UK finally beat UF or fill in the blank for any other number of games, than I will the semi finals, or even the CCGs. Big games, even big games on a small scale, on campus, preferably mid afternoon, even if it isn't all important for CFP purposes.

College football does though playout like a long running soap opera series. There are villains, blue bloods, upstarts, and rivals, but in the end, it is pretty much a handful of schools that ultimately win the prize. I'm just having fun with end points here, but you have to go back to 1996 Florida to find a school that last won its first national championship. Prior firsts, '93 FSU, 1991 Washington, '90 CU, '84 BYU, '83 Miami, '82 Penn St, '81 Clem, '80 Georgia.

I do wonder if it's still fun being an Alabama fan. It's like watching a tank roll over a field of wildflowers - OK, you might be rooting for the tank, but how much joy can you really get from the experience?

Yes, yes it still is. :)

I was in grad school there for the one Gene Stalling championship and I can tell you I enjoyed the game against Miami far more than last year's one against Georgia or recent ones against Clemson, LSU, Notre Dame, or Texas. Heck, I might have enjoyed the SEC Championship against Spurrier and UF in '92 more than any of those championships. But yes, it is fun watching the tank destroy the weeds that are polluting the beautiful pastoral field.
   236. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: September 18, 2018 at 01:32 PM (#5746596)
It is pretty hilarious to be around campus/city when these teams that go on these runs actually lose. I remember when Nebraska lost at ASU after winning 26 in a row and two national titles. It was panic and massive depression time for some, local news fanned the flames predictably. It's still fun, as dlf notes just less exciting. You find yourself getting mad at your team allowing a single rushing touchdown, or trailing at all. I wonder if Saban, the buzzkill that he is, makes it more job like for the fans.
   237. CFBF Rides The Zombie Ice Dragon Posted: September 18, 2018 at 03:22 PM (#5746727)
Saban's Alabama squads are about as close as I've ever seen to those NCAA Football dynasties you could put together when that wonderful series was still alive and kicking. You know, the ones where you're bringing in the #1 recruiting class in the country every year, filling it up with 10+ five-star recruits, winning back-to-back-to-back-to-back national championships and scheduling the #2-#4 teams in the country every year in your non-conference schedule just to keep things interesting.

Nice pick in the Mizzou game to stop UGA. Big pass play flips the field almost immediately.

Dude had been driven back four yards before being stripped. Horrible.

That really ought to have been blown dead. That's a terrible call if it stands.

Forward progress isn't reviewable, so it'll definitely stand.
   243. Cowboy Popup Posted: September 22, 2018 at 12:17 PM (#5749478)
So Mizzou wasted a timeout on top of that? Ouch. Gonna be hard to come back from this against UGA.
   244. Cowboy Popup Posted: September 22, 2018 at 12:26 PM (#5749479)
I'm not convinced that kick was wide.
   245. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 22, 2018 at 12:27 PM (#5749481)
Higdon with a 44-yard touchdown to go with his 46-yard run setting up Michigan's previous touchdown. I doubt I'll be keeping an eye on that game much longer.
   246. Cowboy Popup Posted: September 22, 2018 at 12:35 PM (#5749484)
Mizzou stuffed UGA and is running the ball successfully. Back inside the UGA 40. They are dominating this game...and still losing.
   247. Cowboy Popup Posted: September 22, 2018 at 12:38 PM (#5749486)
Tie game as Mizzou just runs it right down Georgia's throat. I guess I'll be watching this game for a while after all. 7-7.
   248. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 22, 2018 at 12:40 PM (#5749487)
As Griese and Levy talk about the 1997 season in the midst of a Missouri game...

In a world where champions were decided by polls, I still find it unfathomable that anyone could have voted for Nebraska over Michigan considering Nebraska by all rights lost to Missouri. Officials not calling the illegal kick on the field means the game goes in the books as a Nebraska win, but there was absolutely nothing keeping voters from acknowledging the call was wrong, particularly when Wiggins freely admitted the kick was intentional.
   249. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 22, 2018 at 12:44 PM (#5749488)
Up next, a diatribe about the 1990 Colorado team, with a surprising emphasis on the phantom clip that decided the Orange Bowl rather than the Fifth Down Game.
   250. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 22, 2018 at 12:49 PM (#5749490)
Huskers get a stop after Michigan ran all over them for three first-quarter touchdowns, only to muff the punt.
   251. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 22, 2018 at 12:54 PM (#5749493)
Ugh. What a complete disaster this game is turning into for Mizzou.

Oh Mizzou. This could be such a different game...ah well.

   255. Cowboy Popup Posted: September 22, 2018 at 01:18 PM (#5749510)
OK, Mizzou. I give up now. 17 points off turnovers/special teams idiocy in the first half.

I think Lock fumbled that ball.

I haven't been watching the games, but I see that lowly Purdue is simply throttling ranked BC. Yes the score is lopsided, but the yardage even moreso: 330-47. It's not turnovers either, as each team has one.
   258. Cowboy Popup Posted: September 22, 2018 at 03:09 PM (#5749577)
Man, if Mizzou hadn't made so many mistakes early on...

from maryland's friday night dump of their report on their coaching staff killing jordan mcnair:

• It was a humid day.

• [mcnair] was gassed after seventh repetition. He missed his last three times, and walked much of the way of the tenth repetition.

West yelled at the interns to drag him across the field. He could barely stand but was “walked” back toward the drills. Two interns were intertwined with his legs trying to hold him up.

• The coaches preach a “no quit” mentality. No one wants to go to the Pit (area of practice for injured players administered by strength coaches). The Pit is no joke, and players avoid this at all costs.

   262. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 22, 2018 at 06:43 PM (#5749702)
I doubt Old Dominion cut Virginia Tech a check. It's probably the same reason Miami plays at some G5 school every year: because some dumb athletic director decided to.

Might be nice if TCU could finish a drive.

ODU is in Norfolk which is considered prime recruiting territory for the state of Virginia, apparently making them more advantageous than other G5 schools when it comes to taking road dates. North Carolina and I believe another couple of schools are scheduled to go there in the next few years.

That might change after today, of course.

This is looking like an Oregon-Stanford game from the turn of the decade. Except with no Andrew Luck to at least put up a respectable number of points.
   276. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 22, 2018 at 10:23 PM (#5749789)

I honestly can't believe it. When Oregon went in for the subsequently overturned touchdown that would've made it 31-7, it had been one-way traffic. And the game immediately turned with the botched exchange and the airmailed snap.

Pretty thoroughly beating a top 25 team yesterday might best highlight this issue. Rather than pure enjoyment, I spent much of the day worrying about why the O-line could pass block but not open any holes in the middle, and a decline in the speed of the outside backers compared to last season when no one could get to the edge and there is no way a QB would run away from the tacklers.

Syracuse-Clemson just started with, I #### you not, a Sean McDonough voiceover about crayons.

First to 70 wins in Lubbock.

Syracuse went three-and-out on its opening drive, then about 30 seconds after the third down it was announced that Clemson had called timeout prior to the play, and Syracuse took advantage of the second bite at the apple, eventually kicking a 35-yard field goal.

Texas Tech not holding up its end.

Trevor Lawrence just took a big shot and is staying down. With butthurt Kelly Bryant having decided to transfer in a huff, Clemson's season may be in the hands of Chase Brice.

I try not to think too much about the fact that Jim McElwain ran off Will Grier. If I really want to cry that much, I can just pull up the end of Captain America: The First Avenger on YouTube.

Clemson can't pass block at all. Running has been no problem, but practically every drive is short-circuited by quick pressure when attempting to throw. Syracuse just got a sack with a three-man rush after Clemson had a slew of successful runs into plus territory.

Tech's gonna need about 16 quarters to get to 70.

This is the kind of showing I was dreaming about but too damaged to ever expect.

There's now also the small matter of Brice repeatedly throwing behind open receivers.

And then Renfrow bails him out when he does it again.

If Clemson can refrain from muffing punts or otherwise shooting itself in the foot, it should still win this game. Syracuse's offense has done squat in the second half when it hasn't been set up inside the 10, and Clemson continues to run at will.

Syracuse having an illegal man downfield on a fourth-down jump pass also helps.

Some real what-the-#### "tackling" by West Virginia on that fourth down. The decision to pull the ball down and run for it was insane because there were two defenders right there. And yet...

A&M-Arky a lot closer than it should be--favored by 20.5 only up 7 w/ 3 min to go

if I were Clem(p)son, I would not throw a single pass the rest of the game

Clemson facing 4th-and-1 from the Syracuse 47 with 2:50 left, trailing 23-20.

Jesus Christ. Pulling guard pulls before the ball is snapped.
