Nebraska 26th? They finished 4-8 last year, and one of those wins was over Bethune Cookman.

Nebraska has 485 scholarship offers out to the 2020 class. Maybe those guys got a vote.
   4. Zonk Rocks You Like a Sharpiecane Posted: August 01, 2019 at 03:20 PM (#5867461)
I suspect most of Nebraska's oomph comes from genius Scott Frost came home and he just needed a season to sort out the prior regime's dead weight.... not saying that I buy that.... just saying that I imagine that's the thinking - particularly from the coach's poll.
   5. Zonk Rocks You Like a Sharpiecane Posted: August 01, 2019 at 03:25 PM (#5867467)
That said -- the Huskers actually did play much better than their record in the 2nd half of the schedule.... They came within a single score of running the table in the Oct/Nov B1G schedule - losing to the Cats in OT by field goal, blowing out Minnesota, losing by 5 to the Buckeyes, blowing out Illinois, beating the Spartans 9-6, and finishing with a field goal loss to Iowa.

Central Florida went from 6-7 to national champions in year two, so...
   7. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: August 01, 2019 at 03:51 PM (#5867483)
They also have a more favorable schedule this season, and no doubt So. Adrian Martinez is a playmaker at QB. Their largest concern will be stopping somebody, anybody defensively. That has to improve. RB quality/depth is also unknown right now, either due to eligibility/status of one guy, and quality of others.

Yay, Nebraska talk!

I think the polls on NU are optimistic, not that they are wrong, but it's hard to say how good the Huskers will be next year. I guess it boils down to faith in Frost. (As an NU fan I am hopeful, but fans are always hopeful).

Nebraska did end up 48th in FEI last year despite the 3-8 record (FEI ignores not Div IA wins), indicating they played better than their record. In 2017, they were 104th with a 4-8 record. So one could reason that if Frost can jump them from 104th to 48th in Year One, he can get them to 26th in Year Two.
   9. Barry`s_Lazy_Boy Posted: August 01, 2019 at 04:12 PM (#5867492)
Nebraska's line play on both sides of the ball limits their upside. Martinez will be attempting to outscore people.

I am by no means a Nebraska fan (Go Cats!), and obviously, I'd prefer to see the West stay winnable... but I will admit - I'm used to taking the El up to Evanston and seeing the purple outnumbered badly, and when Nebraska comes north, that's exponentially true.... but man, last year? It was like a funeral procession on the train. That was just too creepy and sad for me to even enjoy.
   12. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: August 01, 2019 at 10:53 PM (#5867606)
I was with a friend here in Indy, a Northwestern grad, it was at his house. It was such a gut punching defeat as a Nebraska alum/fan, and I could tell he was not enjoying it, in a normal fashion when your own team wins in dramatic fashion like that. I was like, 'it's been like this all season. Enjoy it, no need to be polite. We did go to the B1G CCG together, that was a lot of fun, at least the 1st half. Fun time hanging out with the Cats. As an aside, with a new Maryland alum on the block we're now up to 12 of the 14 B1G teams with alum living on our square block (missing Minnesota and Illinois), with a few Pac 12 interlopers, to go with the private/liberal arts schools that don't care about college football..

When my son and I were on vacation last summer in Glacier National Park and Yellowstone, we played Big Ten Bingo, trying to spot clothing (or in one case, a bumper sticker) representing all 14 Big Ten schools. We ended up getting them all, although I think the only NU colors we saw were on each other.

Perhaps worth noting in this discussion that Frost didn't put Nebraska in his own Top 25 (yes, these are filled out by assistants to assistants, but still.

The polls are basically indistinguishable -- to a disappointing degree, actually -- apart from Mizzou being 26 in AP while not being among the *57* teams to receive a vote from the SIDs.

I'm thinking of biting the bullet and buying a ticket to the Duke-'Bama game next weekend. Duke is likely in for a beat-down after losing their first-round QB, but the game is practically next door, and I haven't been to a football game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Mizzou is on probation, and such teams cannot receive votes in the coaches poll (per a rule that go back to at least 1974).

Some friends are trying to convince me to grab a last minute flight to the bay area to watch what is a pretty good August tilt between the Cats and Cardinal and show displeasure at a perceived slighting of NU....

Setting aside the wisdom of a labor day weekend "last minute" flight -

I'm torn on whether it's a slighting or not... On the one hand, defending West champs ought to mean at least something.... OTOH, they could have just as easily been .500 and middle of the pack. Of course, Pat's Cats have long had a pretty solid track record on "keep it close and run a good two minute drill".

In any case, they graduated Thorson, Nagel, and most of the line... but then - the offense was dreadful by the numbers anyway so it's not like graduation could really make it any worse. I presume that at least having a more settled backfield (I think Bowser is a fine feature back - and if Morten can finally stay healthy, he ought to be a fine change of pace) will help, rather than last year when they lost Larkin and suddenly had to scramble. The O line was also bad - I think they were last in the B1G in sacks - but they do return their Center and best Tackle, so the rest of the line really cannot be any worse. Despite Nagel's graduation, the rest of the receiver corps - including the downfield threats (such as they are in Evanston) are back. Curiously, Pat still hasn't named a starter - but Hunter Johnson seems like he ought to be at least the equal of Thorson.

The defense, though, was pretty good last year and they do get most of them back... In particular, the secondary was really young last year - so they ought to be better. Gaziano returns -- as does a good LB corps. So - I'm expecting a pretty solid D to be even better.

The West should be a fun race... I can't imagine anyone in it seriously rooting for much more than the B1G title game and upsetting a ~top 10 team, but whatever.

This is the biggest reason I really hate CFB playoffs... It just feels like all but half a dozen teams are basically rooting for some kind of participant grand ribbon - which I suppose was at least kind of true BITD, but this just always feels so much more antiseptic.

The SkyCam once again remains terrific in theory and terrible in execution. Turning from side to side unnecessarily, and the extreme closeups swamp any sense of scale, leaving you with no earthly idea how many yards a play is gaining or how close a ball carrier is to the line to gain given the lack of commentary and graphics.
   27. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: August 24, 2019 at 07:26 PM (#5874160)
Foolish Hurricanes. Everyone knows that when you play Florida, you have to prepare for two playmakers: Kedarius Toney and Tommy Townsend.

I'll go ahead and predict that this ends up something like 24-6. Miami looks pretty hapless on offense right now.

If I was Miami I don't know that I throw anything other than WR screens. They're having some success with them, and Williams is getting hammered any time he takes more than a one-step drop.

These officials seem to be throwing flags completely at random. I don't think one team is being unduly favored, it's just time after time I don't see the penalty when they're called, and obvious stuff goes uncalled.

I hope that last unsportsmanlike penalty was well-deserved. No way to know, but it better have been legit over the line because there's been obvious chirping going on all night.

Franks looks like a disaster. Maybe he just is a slow starter and needs 2/3 of a season to get going every year.

If Franks makes an accurate throw to Swain it's a 20-yard gain. If he makes an accurate throw to Cleveland it's a touchdown. And instead....

On another note, I like Perine. He's been mostly bottled up, and I don't think the playcalling has been ideal to take advantage of his strengths. But he runs hard. Can't fault the effort.

He's one of those guys you tend to describe as a "good college back," with all the implications of that phrase. He does everything pretty well and he's incredibly reliable.

Also: Franks for Heisman.

Fowler and Herbstreit seem to get awfully offended at Franks' sideline celebrations, especially considering how Miami's players have mugged for the camera after scoring.

A big-time pet peeve tonight has been the thing on the ESPN ticker that says that Miami has owned Florida in "recent" games, winning 7 of the last 8 games. But to go back 8 games, you have to go all the way back to ... 1986.

Which, fine, Miami has won 7 of 8. Fair enough to point out. But for god's sake, don't call it "recent" if you're going back 33 years.

While I'm not offended, exactly, I don't really think Franks is good enough to chirp to the cameras. On the other hand, Franks only ever seems to play well after playing so crappy that everyone's turned on him and he gets angry about it.

   58. Brian C Posted: August 24, 2019 at 10:28 PM (#5874214)
That's probably the worst play Franks has made in his career with the Gators, which is saying kind of a lot.
   59. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: August 24, 2019 at 10:29 PM (#5874215)
And what in the world is Mullen doing?
   60. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: August 24, 2019 at 10:30 PM (#5874216)
Boy, Florida has had some awful fumble luck tonight.
   61. Brian C Posted: August 24, 2019 at 10:32 PM (#5874217)
And what in the world is Mullen doing?

Well he's a McElwain podperson now so
   62. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: August 24, 2019 at 10:32 PM (#5874218)
Again!

When you get outside the pocket, feel free to throw the ####### ball.
   64. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: August 24, 2019 at 10:36 PM (#5874220)
Drop 10, rush Zuniga. You'll probably still get pressure.
   65. Brian C Posted: August 24, 2019 at 10:36 PM (#5874221)
Jabari Zuniga for Heisman!
   66. Brian C Posted: August 24, 2019 at 10:37 PM (#5874223)
This is one of the worst football games I've ever seen.
   67. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: August 24, 2019 at 10:38 PM (#5874224)
Unbelievable. I swear to God....
   68. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: August 24, 2019 at 10:38 PM (#5874225)
Interference when you've got a guy surrounded miles short of the sticks on fourth down is really something.
   69. Brian C Posted: August 24, 2019 at 10:39 PM (#5874226)
And now Zuniga is hurt.

EDIT: probably just cramps.
   70. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: August 24, 2019 at 10:40 PM (#5874229)
Some dubious decisions and judgment tonight. As Howie said, Aug football.
   71. Brian C Posted: August 24, 2019 at 10:42 PM (#5874230)
That one looked like PI by the letter of the rule but also the kind of play that a DB can reasonably expect to get away with.
   72. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: August 24, 2019 at 10:43 PM (#5874231)
Williams knows just how and where to fumble.
   73. Brian C Posted: August 24, 2019 at 10:44 PM (#5874232)
Williams knows just how and where to fumble.

Fumbling to the score?
   74. Brian C Posted: August 24, 2019 at 10:45 PM (#5874233)
Holy ####, they picked up the flag "after further discussion". Good call for a crew that's had a rough night.
   75. Brian C Posted: August 24, 2019 at 10:46 PM (#5874234)
Thank god this ############# game is over.
   76. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: August 24, 2019 at 10:47 PM (#5874235)
Jabari Zuniga was the only person who deserved to win this game.
   77. Brian C Posted: August 24, 2019 at 10:49 PM (#5874237)
And Tommy Townsend!
   78. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: August 24, 2019 at 10:55 PM (#5874238)
To the extent there's anything to be taken from that catastrophe...the offensive line mostly held up in pass protection against a pretty good Miami defense. A lot of worries it would look like...well, exactly how Miami's offensive line looked.
   79. Brian C Posted: August 24, 2019 at 11:01 PM (#5874241)
I was sort of impressed by Jarren Williams, though. By the end the Gators obviously wore him out and had him rattled, but he took pressure on almost every play, and he made some good throws. Hung in there longer than most freshmen would have. Holding the ball too long in the face of pressure is a rookie mistake ... he looks like he might be something in the long run.

This Week 0 nonsense is all kinds of stupid, but the worst part is that now there's 3 weeks until the Gators play a real game again (not counting TN-Martin for obvious reasons). That seems like a suboptimal way to start a season.

i truly hope he doesn't play again this season.

High-fiving a fan after scoring gets you flagged, evidently.

Champs against new-look (uniforms, too, not that anyone could tell) Georgia Tech.
   83. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: August 29, 2019 at 08:36 PM (#5875434)
Punting on 4th-and-5 from the 36 as a heavy underdog. Just forfeit.
   84. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: August 29, 2019 at 09:07 PM (#5875442)
I thought Paul Chryst coach's Friday night. That's his move. Who's punting at the 36?
   85. Cowboy Popup Posted: August 29, 2019 at 09:12 PM (#5875443)
Bearcats just ran over UCLA's defense after an amazing pick. Gonna have to turn this around soon if they don't want to get swept by Cincy.
   86. Cowboy Popup Posted: August 29, 2019 at 09:17 PM (#5875444)
Lol, UCLA just flipped the field on a punt and had it called back for an illegal shift. 3rd quarter is off to a rough start for them
   87. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: August 29, 2019 at 09:19 PM (#5875445)
Who's punting at the 36?

Geoff Collins.

Sarcastic cheer for his willingness to go for 4th-and-goal from the one down 21-0. Clemson with a tip-drill interception to turn back the threat.
   88. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: August 29, 2019 at 09:22 PM (#5875447)
Oh, Tee Higgins...
   89. Cowboy Popup Posted: August 29, 2019 at 09:42 PM (#5875456)
Mike Warren for Cincy has some fantastic vision, reading his blocks really well while taking a screen 20 yards or so into the end zone. If the defense holds up the way it did last year, this offense is probably good enough to threaten for the G5 NY6 spot.
   90. Cowboy Popup Posted: August 29, 2019 at 10:17 PM (#5875461)
OK, so Mike Warren fumbled and got hurt and UCLA returned it for a TD. And the replay is, to me, totally incomprehensible. I haven't seen a single angle that gives a clear shot, although I'm leaning towards fumble. So this should stand because I don't think it can be overturned based on replays that don't even show the ball.
   91. Cowboy Popup Posted: August 29, 2019 at 10:22 PM (#5875462)
Overturned. I'm watching on mute and on a laptop so I may have missed something.
   92. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: August 30, 2019 at 12:33 AM (#5875477)
I'm old enough to remember when BYU was known for explosive offense.

espn hammering this Utah holder, on the shanked PAT and yanked FGA earlier.

FORKS UP.

Actually, the Sun Devils looked quite meh, especially on offense. A thin O-line, a true frosh starting at QB, a WR corps without an alpha...

If the AAC is ever going to get a team in the top four, this is the year to do it. There are scalps to be claimed on the schedule of every presumptive contender for the conference.
   97. Howie Menckel Posted: August 30, 2019 at 09:06 PM (#5875793)
Rutgers leads ever-dangerous UMass, 38-21, at halftime by scoring 17 points in the last 5 minutes of the half to secure a 31-0 second-quarter edge.

The Scarlet Knights need this one to stay in the top 4 championship picture.

no legal wagering on them again in NJ, but now their fans can bet online on them in PA before they head to New Brunswick for the game.

I mean, no one is actually making that detour - but they could, in theory.

I imagine the game is on ESPN Ocho.

I consider Harvey an Alpha for ASU. Lots of YAC for ASU as well. Daniels is a little guy. I liked how they telegraphed wildcat w Ethan Long
