Boiler up! Also flip!

Ehhh...

So I guess Boise State-Florida State and Ole Miss-Memphis are my early games.
   103. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: August 31, 2019 at 12:20 PM (#5875905)
Boise was moving the ball with seeming ease only to fumble, then Florida State goes for 4th-and-1 on its opening series, Cam Akers breaks a tackle in the hole, and against cover zero that means...
   104. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: August 31, 2019 at 12:38 PM (#5875907)
Boise marches right down the field again only to stall in the red zone and settle for a field goal, and then Tamorrion Terry takes a little screen 75 yards on the next play. So, uh, Kendal Briles fixed FSU's offense, I guess.
   105. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: August 31, 2019 at 01:11 PM (#5875921)
Boise again stalls at the end of a long drive -- which started with a strip-sack returned for a touchdown that was subsequently overturned -- and then FSU tries its hand at a sustained drive, complete with reverse and (dropped) double pass, for its third touchdown and a 21-6 lead after a quarter.

Then after forcing a three-and-out, it's a deep post to set up 1st-and-goal.

If you ever wondered what the Briles offense would look like with five-star talent...

Meanwhile, UNI is giving the 21st-ranked 'Clones whatfor.

The first half of the Neal Brown era was not an amazing experience.

I see Boise has climbed all the way back. That's impressive.
   108. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: August 31, 2019 at 03:33 PM (#5875954)
Update: Florida State's offensive line and defense still suck.

Now we're in a third OT of whatfor!
   110. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: August 31, 2019 at 03:57 PM (#5875964)
The only thing FSU's defense has done well all day is bring pressure, so of course on 3rd-and-long with the game on the line you want to rush three and play soft-ass zone.

And then on the subsequent third down a blitz gets home. Gee, ya think?
   111. Red Voodooin Posted: August 31, 2019 at 04:04 PM (#5875966)
Huge win for Boise State!
   112. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: August 31, 2019 at 04:36 PM (#5875974)
Taggart has a huge buyout, but if FSU posts another sub-.500 season I don't know if they can keep him around. It's easy (and fair) to say that Jimbo left him a mess, but at some point that's more an excuse than an explanation.
   113. Mike A Posted: August 31, 2019 at 05:26 PM (#5875985)
Taggart is over his head and FSU doesn't have the money to buy him out. Sadly, I see no short-term solution for the Noles, as bringing Bobby back is probably not an option.

I'm still amazed the team from Idaho was better prepared for the oppressive Tallahassee heat than the team from Tallahassee.

   114. Gold Star - just Gold Star Posted: August 31, 2019 at 06:04 PM (#5875989)
After coming to sports consciousness right about the time Florida State became FLORIDA STATE, it's hard to wrap my mind around the Seminoles' mediocrity. Like when Nebraska went into the shitter after firing Solich.

Empires rise, empires fall.
   115. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: August 31, 2019 at 06:27 PM (#5875994)
Am I seriously watching a Georgia State-Tennessee game called by Ryan Leaf?

Panthers lead in the fourth, for those on lolSEC alert.
   116. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: August 31, 2019 at 06:33 PM (#5875996)
And a Georgia State touchdown run puts them up by 11 with less than five minutes left.

The GSU quarterback managed to get two Vols to tackle each other on that play.
   117. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: August 31, 2019 at 06:35 PM (#5875997)
Corner blitz from the blind side forces a fumble setting up GSU inside Tennessee's 40, then quarterback Dan Ellington keeps on a zone read and winds his way through the Vol defense for a 22-yard touchdown to make it 35-23 with 4:45 left.
   118. Cowboy Popup Posted: August 31, 2019 at 06:38 PM (#5875998)
The battle of Carolinas flipped in the blink of an eye and now UNC looks well positioned to make this a two score lead.

Norkerlina leads Sakerlina late.

GSU interception, and Tennessee is about cooked.

Georgia State knocks through a 48-yard field goal. I was fully expecting it to be blocked and returned for a touchdown.
   122. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: August 31, 2019 at 06:47 PM (#5876003)
Tennessee getting dominated along the line of scrimmage by Georgia State would not seem to augur well for the 2019 season.
   123. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: August 31, 2019 at 06:47 PM (#5876004)
Can't believe Bentley got out of that. And can't believe UNC botched the play downfield.
   124. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: August 31, 2019 at 06:49 PM (#5876005)
UNC picks the downfield heave. 2:48 to kill.

'Bama -32 point line over Duke not looking good at 0-0 several minutes into 2nd quarter.

then 35-3 - a push - with the 4th quarter to play.

oh, the odious Nick Saban went ape #### when his sideline got a late 3rd-quarter warning for excessively celebrating an INT. something about the "turnover belt coach." Saban decided to "biggie-size" the infraction up to a 15-yard penalty.

still 35-3. true freshman kicker added a right upright miss to his left upright miss early #delayedoubledoink

Tua's little brother enters the game with 5 minutes left as the 3rd 'Bama QB of the day. handoff - and it's a 40-or-so-yard running back TD.

Duke made a toss into the end zone on the final play in a desperate attempt to "push" - or maybe cover, who knows - to no avail.
   126. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: August 31, 2019 at 07:00 PM (#5876009)
UNC makes the classic blunder of running into the line twice to burn timeouts, fails to complete a third-down pass, then gives up a long return of a rolling punt.

Bentley overthrows the would-be go-ahead score, then gets picked off two plays later.
   127. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: August 31, 2019 at 07:01 PM (#5876010)
Then North Carolina ##### up monumentally, taking a knee on fourth down at midfield, giving the Gamecocks 11 seconds to make something happen.
   128. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: August 31, 2019 at 07:02 PM (#5876011)
So, UNC just took a knee...with 11 seconds left, in their own territory, on fourth down.

Just setting up the dramatic strip-sack for a touchdown.

There's some bad ####### football being played today.
   131. Fernigal McGunnigle Posted: August 31, 2019 at 07:44 PM (#5876017)
So this UNC win is ####### huge. The last time the Heels opened the season against a team from a power conference and actually won the game was 1997, when they beat Indiana 23-6. In that time they've gone 0-11 vs power conference teams in their openers, including two previous losses to South Carolina. They also managed to lose openers to Miami of Ohio twice during that span. They hadn't won the opener against anyone since beating Elon in 2012.

This team is going to be pretty bad, so a win against a team from a real conference is very exciting. South Carolina seems to suck as well, but who the #### cares. 3-8 will feel a lot better than 2-9.
   132. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: August 31, 2019 at 07:57 PM (#5876020)

My hopes for some quick Holgo magic getting Houston immediately back to its '15-16 level appear not to have come to fruition. Having Oklahoma and Wazzu on the schedule is about as golden an opportunity as a G5 squad could ever ask for.

I placed my first (legal) college football wager today at the Downtown Indy OTB. Wow, the place is even nicer than it used to be (as far as OTBs go). Always had good lunch, cheap cold beer, now it is roomy and many more windows. I've only seen it this busy on a weekday during lead up to big horse racing weekends. (Oaks/Derby, Breeder's, etc.) I'm sure there's novelty in this, particularly with NFL honks, but there was some tennis action around this afternoon. The trainee that took my wager was noticeably excited to use all these new gambling buzzwords.

I'm all in on him being one of the best players in the nation, but after his Gameday segment, Sam Ehlinger seems like a truly unlikeable person.

Army-Michigan was a popular pre-season upset pick. Army's up 7-0 near the end of the first quarter. They can really shorten a game and choke the life out of a much more talented opponent when they're going well.
   145. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 07, 2019 at 12:52 PM (#5877380)
Deservedly blocked. Don't kick field goals on 4th-and-2 as a heavy underdog already trailing 7-0.

Why does Mizzou's field always look so awful on TV? It doesn't matter whether it's a day game or night game, it always looks like it's worn-out and soggy or something, I don't know quite how to describe it. It looks like the TV cameras are set up closer to the field there, so that might be part of it. Do they also use a different kind of turf? It always seems so reflective of light, whether the sun or stadium lights. Maybe the cameras, in addition to being closer, are just at a different angle that captures more reflection?

Whatever it is, it's something that I've been noticing on a consistent basis for at years now. Well, at least as consistently as I actually turn on Mizzou games.

But my goodness, this is something else.
   151. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: September 07, 2019 at 02:02 PM (#5877394)
Army threw a pass! It went for 34 yards!

Actually, Army's thrown two passes today. One resulted in a pass interference penalty on fourth down, the other got them 34 yards. That's a nice ROI.
   152. AuntBea calls himself Sky Panther Posted: September 07, 2019 at 02:26 PM (#5877396)
The third pass wiped out the ROI I think.

Yes, that was off-brand.
   154. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: September 07, 2019 at 02:48 PM (#5877399)
Army and Michigan tied 14-14. Army has the ball with about nine minutes left. They could, conceivably, hold this ball for the rest of the game.
   155. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 07, 2019 at 03:08 PM (#5877401)
There's really no excuse for Michigan's inability to impose its will on the undersized defense of a service academy.

Army's freshman kicker lining up from 50 or so to win the game.

I don't think he's really been set up for success here.

Watching on mute. Seems like long odds on the kick. They cut to the kicker and it says under his name: "Never attempted a field goal." hehe.

edit: but hey, nice kick almost made it.

ok so definitely negative ROI on pass attempts.

Heck of a play by Lawrence there to put points on the board for Clemson. Flicked it 30 some yards on the run, hits his receiver in the chest.

Wonder how hard he would throw if he were a baseball player.
   162. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 07, 2019 at 06:14 PM (#5877429)
Punting down 24-3 with 18 minutes left is pure "Don't lose by 35." Weak, Jimbo.
   163. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: September 07, 2019 at 06:24 PM (#5877432)
Down 17-7, Colorado gets a 96-yard flea ficker for a touchdown to pull within three against Nebraska.

Nebraska then scores on the very next play from scrimmage with a 75-yard WR screen.

   166. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: September 07, 2019 at 07:25 PM (#5877440)
That was one ugly-ass field goal attempt. Which is why you generally don't place the game on the foot of your punter from 48 yards.

I don't know anything about college football, and even I knew that Nebraska wasn't a Top 25 team. I only saw the second half of the CU game, but their defensive secondary seemed to have no idea what they were doing. Wasn't Scott Frost a defensive back?

   171. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 07, 2019 at 08:25 PM (#5877453)
Wasn't Scott Frost a defensive back?

Quarterback at Nebraska who was nominally a safety in the NFL, but he was really a special teamer. When he grabbed the lowest rung of the coaching ladder it was as a defensive assistant, but he joined Oregon's offensive staff and moved up to coordinator before getting the UCF job.
   172. Brian C Posted: September 07, 2019 at 08:26 PM (#5877455)
Not really watching the Gators tonight because they're not playing a real opponent, but I'm checking in from time to time. It seems apparent to me that Mullen simply has no trust in Franks, even against a vastly inferior opponent. Dude is 8-8 against TN-Martin ... for 36 yards. All screens and junk throws.

Until finally a long TD as I type this. Point still stands though.
   173. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: September 07, 2019 at 08:38 PM (#5877458)
Florida has a handful of receivers who I feel would have much, much more impressive numbers in a different offense. Jefferson, Cleveland, Grimes - these guys have talent.

If you had told me five years ago FSU would beat UL-Monroe on a missed extra point in OT...

It's amazing how quickly the program has crashed without a (major) scandal.

I personally would have been sorely tempted to fire Taggart this last week after he blamed dehydration as a factor in FSU's loss to Boise State. I mean, that loss to Boise State was bad enough, but weird things happen early in the year and it was a strange week with the game getting moved because of the hurricane and all.

But f-ing dehydration? That's indefensible. Either he's really stretching for excuses, or he's running a program that is literally bordering on the criminally negligent. And besides the obvious danger of being so dehydrated that it affects performance ... how does a team in Florida have problems with typical seasonal conditions while the team from Boise, of all places, handles them fine? What the hell kind of conditioning program are they running there?

I just thought it was one of the most bizarre things I've heard a coach say. Not quite up there with "I'm going to whine about death threats that I fabricated" in the annals of recent state of Florida coaching craziness, but close enough that it should have the administration looking for an ejector seat even aside from the embarrassing team performance.

With the buyout FSU would have to pay Taggart, a couple posters on this thread might be the only viable options.

I'm hardly pro-Taggart at this point, I thought he would be a good hire after his turnaround at USF and, um, wrong again. If I were A&M I'd be keeping an eye on the talent pipeline to make sure he doesn't let the cubbard go completely bare again.

24/7 has FSU *sixth* in total talent, so it's not like Taggart came to Florida State and found Florida International.

The only cause for hope is that he started 7-21 at USF and finished 17-4. So maybe something clicks after a terrible start to next season!

Texas might want to stop giving such enormous cushions.

3rd-and-17 and they go Full Grantham.

That was almost the most spectacular onside recovery ever.

UNC picks up 4th-and-17 and then gets a touchdown catch in the back corner of the end zone, two-pointer makes it 28-25, and Miami misses a 49-yard tying attempt to end it.

Gonna be a sad night.

gonna be a push.

LSU -7 was a terrible spot at 37-31 with 3rd and 17 on own 39 with 3 minutes left. a short run, Texas uses its last timeout, punt, and that's your final score.

for reasons that escape me - I think this is some sort of LSU version of PTSD - they throw for a first down, and the receiver escapes for a 61-yard TD.

Texas scores in the final minute to make it 45-38, then nearly recovers the onside kick.

gamblers fascinate me for many reasons, and as this game seesawed, it occurred to me that estimating how many hours one would have to work to compensate for a losing bet would be a good data point for anyone.

mine would have been about..... 8 minutes.

that strikes me as a safe denomination.

:)

also, I won about 6 minutes worth shorting Serena Williams in the US Open Final.

time to party!

Pitt update: I did not wach the Pitt game. Pitt beat Ohio 20-10. Sounds about right.

Army-Michigan was a popular pre-season upset pick. Army's up 7-0 near the end of the first quarter. They can really shorten a game and choke the life out of a much more talented opponent when they're going well.

I didn't know it was an upset pick but it was definitely a pick against the spread. Michigan was favored by about 20. Clearly Army can keep them from even having the ball for long enough to make it possible to win by 20.

I managed to hit my 3 dog parlay. NMSU, A&M and Colorado. Back doors, all of them. In the later case, a guilt ridden win as a Nebraska alum. Looked good for a OT win by 3, until sack.

Man, Oregon was angry today.

Lightning delay in Seattle is finally about to end. Gonna turn Pac-12 After Dark into Pac-12 Before Dawn, and I'm gonna subject myself to it.

That's, like, four drops on crossing routes. For the love of John Ross.
