Shocked he made the kick.

Washington handled the final minute abysmally, culminating in letting eight seconds run off the clock before calling timeout prior to the field goal.

24/7 has FSU *sixth* in total talent, so it's not like Taggart came to Florida State and found Florida International.

That's a severe overestimation of the talent Jimbo left behind. And Jimbo went 5-6 (4-6 against FBS competition) in his last year at FSU.

That's not to excuse Taggart for almost losing to ULM or his dehydration nonsense. Those are markers of a coach who has probably lost whatever edge he had.

If weren't obligated to watch WVU get whooped today, I would probably be watching the States Kansas and Mississippi square off. Really curious to see how that one shakes out.

If anything would justify firing Narduzzi on the spot, it would be kicking a field goal from the one trailing by seven in the final five minutes.

Deservedly. Missed.

South Carolina puts together a really good opening drive that stalls deep in Alabama territory and results in a field goal...and it feels like a loss, because 'Bama scored a touchdown in, like, 27 seconds on its first drive, and 14-3 in a few minutes feels absolutely inevitable.

survive. advance. repeat.

The ACC is crazy bad this year (as further demonstrated today), Narduzzi could still win his Division. But in principle, I agree.

former temple coach geoff gcollins just lost to the citadel.
former temple coach stevio adazzio lost 48-24 to kansas.
former temple coach manny diaz is 0-2.

temple just beat maryland and is now 2-0.

2017 champs up 21-0 on Stanford after just 6:39.

Hey now, Ga Tech managed to take the Citadel to OT. It wasn't like they lost in regulation. Va Tech beat Furman by a touchdown, so the ACC's Techs managed to go 1-1 against the Southern Conference. So we shouldn't imagine that Wofford could simply jump to the ACC and go 7-1 or something like that. More like 4-4.

Jeez -- the Citadel's two losses were conference games to Towson and Elon. Not even a designated patsy loss to an SEC team of something like that. GT ain't good.
   212. Brian C Posted: September 14, 2019 at 04:54 PM (#5879144)
Najee Harris making SC's defense look like a high school team, catching a pass on a 4th-and-3, throwing off a tackle, straight-up hurdling over another tackler, and then shaking a third tackle before making the end zone.
   213. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 14, 2019 at 04:58 PM (#5879145)
I would probably be watching the States Kansas and Mississippi square off. Really curious to see how that one shakes out.

Kansas State generally looked like the better team but did everything it could to try to give it away.

Up 10-0 and about the get the ball at midfield, muffed a punt and subsequently gave up a touchdown. Up 17-7 right before the half, committed a late hit to put Clanga in plus territory, then inexplicably got burned deep for a touchdown in the final 10 seconds.

After fumbling away an interception and giving up the go-ahead touchdown on the ensuing drive, had another muffed punt in Mississippi State territory -- as with the first, by the upman on a short kick -- that set up a field goal, and then the kickoff was returned for a touchdown to turn the game around as it appeared to be slipping away.

Still almost blew it at the end, dropping an uncontested interception on third down before the whirlybird scramble that almost extended the final drive.

Northwestern was all excited about new quarterback Hunter Johnson - a five star recruit! Transferred from Clemson! - but after being horrible against Stanford in the opener, he's all the way up to mediocre this week. He's 9-for-16 for 97 yards with an INT in the first half against a weak UNLV defense as the Cats cling to a 16-14 lead.
   215. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 14, 2019 at 05:23 PM (#5879152)
2017 champs up 21-0 on Stanford after just 6:39.

Now 38-7. Trying to keep calm and not start looking ahead to an AAC title showdown between 12-0 teams.

"Tua throws eight-yard slant, Alabama receiver takes it to the house" seems like a pretty good gameplan for the Tide.

MSU-ASU seems like it's been a real banger.

BYU-USC going to overtime. Chance for more "Zach Wilson reminds me of Johnny Manziel" commentary.

Literally every time I think "Hey, Franks looks pretty good" he does something dumb. It's uncanny.
   220. Brian C Posted: September 14, 2019 at 07:19 PM (#5879164)
Feleipe Franks still sucks, with a truly stupid INT on the Gators' first drive.

ETA: Gatorade to CFBF.
   221. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 14, 2019 at 07:21 PM (#5879166)
BYU field goal and tip-drill interception win it.
   222. Brian C Posted: September 14, 2019 at 07:21 PM (#5879167)
Literally every time I think "Hey, Franks looks pretty good" he does something dumb. It's uncanny.

I just don't understand why he looks like a guy playing his first game so often. Obviously that's not something any amount of coaching can fix, when a guy just keeps being stupid so often.
   223. Cowboy Popup Posted: September 14, 2019 at 07:25 PM (#5879168)
Lance, thanks for the K-State run down!
   224. Cowboy Popup Posted: September 14, 2019 at 07:27 PM (#5879169)
I cannot believe both TCU @ Purude and FSU @ UVA are on conference networks that I cannot watch. That is total horseshit. So I'm stuck with...UF/UK I guess?
   225. Brian C Posted: September 14, 2019 at 07:32 PM (#5879170)
Illinois lost to Eastern Michigan today. I honestly thought that Lovie Smith would turn them into a semi-respectable middle-of-the-pack B1G team. But instead they're worse than ever and it's turned into a career-killing job for him.

In other news, Franks throws a TD to a wide-open receiver, which doesn't sound that remarkable, except that it appeared to be his second read on the play.
   226. Cowboy Popup Posted: September 14, 2019 at 07:32 PM (#5879171)
I guess I'm going to watch ASU-MSU until one of the teams accidentally scores a TD again. This is going to OT.

Edit: Oh wait, MSU had 12 men on the field for the kick. Gonna have to rekick. That's a kind of drama I guess.

Edit 2: Ahahahahaha, not even close. Herm Edwards has Dantonio's number again. And man, Dantonio has so bought into his own BS about defense first. No reason for his team to be scoring 7 points at home against ASU after the decade he has had there.
   227. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: September 14, 2019 at 07:32 PM (#5879172)
Say what you will about Franks, but he's proven over the last few years that he can throw touchdown passes in Lexington when UK leaves receivers completely uncovered.
   228. Brian C Posted: September 14, 2019 at 07:36 PM (#5879173)
BYU field goal and tip-drill interception win it.

It's always lame when a team wins in OT on a field goal. I actually think they should start OT at the 15, make it 4 downs only, and eliminate FGs.
   229. Cowboy Popup Posted: September 14, 2019 at 07:39 PM (#5879175)

I also thought this. I am sad that it is not going to work out. I do think the program is maybe in slightly better shape than when he took over at least but that is a very uninformed opinion.
   230. Brian C Posted: September 14, 2019 at 07:44 PM (#5879176)
Possible that they're slightly better; my opinion is also uninformed. But Ron Zook now has two jobs where he looks somewhat better in retrospect than he did in real time.
   231. Brian C Posted: September 14, 2019 at 07:57 PM (#5879178)
Franks with another awesome display of pocket awareness. When he has time to throw the ball, he forces it. When he doesn't have time, he won't throw it unless someone is perfectly open.
   232. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: September 14, 2019 at 08:02 PM (#5879180)
I'm actually less concerned with Franks than I am with a defense that's getting completely overwhelmed by Kentucky and has no answers for Pat Mah- *checks notes* Sawyer Smith.
   233. Brian C Posted: September 14, 2019 at 08:04 PM (#5879181)
I'm not too worried about the defense - I feel like I've seen this movie a lot before, where they get sliced up early in games before making adjustments and locking things down.

Still and all, they'll need to put some points up to win, and I just die a little inside every time Franks drops back. He's a ####### human sword of Damocles.
   234. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: September 14, 2019 at 08:15 PM (#5879182)
Wyoming and Idaho are playing? Dozens of people invested in the outcome of that game.
   235. Brian C Posted: September 14, 2019 at 08:18 PM (#5879184)
3rd and long for the Gators ... I'm looking for UK to try to catch the Gators off guard by leaving another receiver wide open.

For all your "The game is on Sunbelt Conference Auxiliary 5?" needs.
   237. Brian C Posted: September 14, 2019 at 08:22 PM (#5879187)
McPherson is a good kicker and I won't hold that miss against him, but geez, just go for it on 4th-and-short.
   238. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: September 14, 2019 at 08:31 PM (#5879190)
Mullen's clock management leaves a lot to be desired there.
   239. Brian C Posted: September 14, 2019 at 08:35 PM (#5879191)
Yeah, felt like a petulant "screw this, let's just get to half-time" move.

Left a lot on the table in that half.

Appreciate it Lance. Turns out the Purdue game is on Fox too where I live. But their QB is out and its been ugly so far. Turned on Iowa State to see them score from 60 yards out. Up 8, after two long rain delays, it feels like a tough lead for Iowa to come back from.
   242. Cowboy Popup Posted: September 14, 2019 at 08:46 PM (#5879197)

Agreed. Beat O$U and went to the Rose Bowl with Juice Williams. That should have gotten him more leeway. 9-4, even once, at Illinois is freaking hard to do.

They fired him for going 7-6 and then 6-6 after bottoming out post-Rose Bowl. They have gone 6-6 once since then (lost the bowl game) and have otherwise not cracked .500 since.
   243. Brian C Posted: September 14, 2019 at 08:59 PM (#5879200)
OK, I'm worried about the defense now. WTF is this
   244. Brian C Posted: September 14, 2019 at 09:02 PM (#5879201)
Aha! My skepticism was too hasty after all. Gators D makes a play and flips the field.
   245. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: September 14, 2019 at 09:02 PM (#5879202)
Well, that changed things really fast.
   246. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: September 14, 2019 at 09:08 PM (#5879203)
I like Perine, but man, you've got to make that guy miss.
   247. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: September 14, 2019 at 09:10 PM (#5879204)
Say this for Franks: he's a surprisingly good runner once he gets up to speed. Huge and deceptively fast.
   248. Brian C Posted: September 14, 2019 at 09:13 PM (#5879205)
I like Perine but he needs to be better. He should have broken that screen for more than he did, but instead of actually running downfield, he came to a full stop and waited for his block to be set up perfectly. You just can't do that - it takes too long to restart after coming to a stop. He only had one tackler to beat, he just needed to keep moving and he'd have been by him.

I don't know why the Gators have just stopped trying to run the ball. I know Perine's been bottled up, but:

a) they have other backs
b) they haven't tried real hard to break down UK's run defense
c) it's still a close game, and
d) Franks isn't good enough to shoulder the load they're putting on him

   249. Brian C Posted: September 14, 2019 at 09:15 PM (#5879207)
Smith needs Franks to show him how to hit an uncovered receiver.
   250. Brian C Posted: September 14, 2019 at 09:17 PM (#5879208)
Not targeting
   251. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: September 14, 2019 at 09:17 PM (#5879209)
On the one hand, Wagner got away with offensive pass interference there. On the other hand, you kind of want your future first-round pick cornerback to not get so thoroughly dominated by a transfer from the Iowa basketball team.
   252. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 14, 2019 at 09:22 PM (#5879210)
At 14-0 in the middle of the first quarter it looked like the struggles with Syracuse had been put to bed, but Clemson has reverted to lackluster form and leads just 17-6 with two minutes to the half.
   253. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: September 14, 2019 at 09:27 PM (#5879211)
I'll give Franks credit for his physical toughness. He's taken a lot of hits over the last few years while playing behind a porous offensive line and carrying a significant part of the rushing load, and he keeps getting up off the mat.
   254. Brian C Posted: September 14, 2019 at 09:27 PM (#5879212)
I'm really surprised there's only been 5 penalties on each team, because it feels like every other play has been penalized.
   255. Brian C Posted: September 14, 2019 at 09:28 PM (#5879213)

Wow. I really need to shut up.
   257. Brian C Posted: September 14, 2019 at 09:29 PM (#5879217)
I can't imagine why Mullen would call a play that involves Franks dropping back there.

And of course on cue, he was pretty much cut in half and isn't getting up.

   258. Mike A Posted: September 14, 2019 at 09:30 PM (#5879218)
Fingers crossed for Franks. That looked bad.

Eh, I get it. The running game hasn't been working, you call play action, give Franks a couple simple reads if the defense bites and give him a chance to scramble if they don't.

It, uh...it didn't work out that way.
   260. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: September 14, 2019 at 09:32 PM (#5879220)
When the opposing crowd audibly groans at the replay and ESPN won't even show it....
   261. Brian C Posted: September 14, 2019 at 09:36 PM (#5879221)
Season-ending injury from what Drs. Levy and Griese say.

Besides the obvious concern for Franks on a personal level, what worries me is that Mullen is no dummy when it comes to his QBs. So I'm scared of how much worse Trask must be if Franks beat him out for the starting job.

Was heartbreaking to see Franks' face as he was carted off. That's a dude in a low place right now.
   262. Brian C Posted: September 14, 2019 at 09:38 PM (#5879223)

Just seems like outsmarting himself to me. Just pick up a god damned yard. If it was 4th-and-4 or something, sure.
   263. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: September 14, 2019 at 09:40 PM (#5879224)
These Fansville commercials are uniformly stupid, but this one where it clearly implies that the guy's wife cheated on him, gave birth to a son conceived with the man she cheated with and then passed the kid off as her husband's son...I mean, that's pretty damn dark for a Dr. Pepper commercial.
   264. Brian C Posted: September 14, 2019 at 09:42 PM (#5879225)
All right, Trask, let's see what ya got. Also, is it a little concerning that Emory Jones is still so far down on the depth chart in his second year? Wouldn't we have assumed he'd be challenging for the starting job by now or at least have ca. 2006 Tebow-type role?
   265. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: September 14, 2019 at 09:44 PM (#5879226)
It's not not concerning.
   266. Brian C Posted: September 14, 2019 at 09:46 PM (#5879227)
Also, how many Gator fans that remember the 1990s want to always call him "Emory Henry"? It can't possibly be just me.
   267. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: September 14, 2019 at 09:50 PM (#5879229)
Not exactly Tommy Frazier running the option there, but it works.
   268. Brian C Posted: September 14, 2019 at 09:50 PM (#5879230)
That was a genius pitch by Trask. I like him already!!
   269. Brian C Posted: September 14, 2019 at 09:52 PM (#5879231)
God damn it, man, another stupid play call. Dropback pass plays like that almost never work in the end zone. Like just put Jones in and run an option or something.
   270. Brian C Posted: September 14, 2019 at 09:55 PM (#5879232)
Fortunately Stoops looks determined to sit on this lead and give the Gators a fighting chance.

   272. Brian C Posted: September 14, 2019 at 09:59 PM (#5879234)
I will give props to Mullen though for not babying his backup QB. I like showing so much faith in the new guy.
   273. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 14, 2019 at 10:01 PM (#5879236)
Tip-drill interception, and Syracuse has the ball inside the 10.

1-yard completion on 3rd-and-11. Hate it!
   276. Cowboy Popup Posted: September 14, 2019 at 10:07 PM (#5879240)
Iowa State just lost on an all-timer stupid play. I can't even describe it, I'll link to it when it's available. It's stupidity was stunning.

GIF Here. This is getting the ball back down 1 with 1:30 to go after just forcing a big three and out, including a big play to tackle a guy out of bounds on third down. Gameday in town for the first time ever. Most hyped Iowa State team since the 70s. And this is how they lose. Amazing.

I'm not convinced Clemson's schedule is going to be harder than, say, UCF's.
   280. Cowboy Popup Posted: September 14, 2019 at 10:15 PM (#5879244)
Targeting? What?

Watching on replay: strongly disagree. The helmet to helmet was incidental, with the QB falling into his helmet.
   281. Brian C Posted: September 14, 2019 at 10:16 PM (#5879245)
Mullen not really even trying to call plays now. Just "eh, throw deep or something".
   282. Brian C Posted: September 14, 2019 at 10:17 PM (#5879247)
Watching on replay: strongly disagree.

This crew tonight is calling targeting every time a defender lowers his head (3 tonight). Which I guess is within the letter of the rule, but seems like it's not how it's usually called.
   283. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: September 14, 2019 at 10:18 PM (#5879248)
I've been a Trask skeptic since basically the moment he committed, but no denying he's been incredibly impressive.
   284. . . . . . . Posted: September 14, 2019 at 10:18 PM (#5879249)
That’s a shitty targeting call and potentially a game changer.

Man, these two-point conversion plays are what you see when you Google "uninspired."

Would like to see the replay of Davis' unsportsmanlike conduct. Was it just celebrating?

Looks that way but I dunno.

Hate to kick Franks while his life is falling apart but it's hard not to notice how much better the offense is working all the sudden. Perhaps UK's playing a softer defense but it's striking.

A QB draw for a 2-point conversion? Goodness. Why is running some kind of misdirection with the Gators' actual playmakers so hard?
   287. Cowboy Popup Posted: September 14, 2019 at 10:20 PM (#5879252)
potentially a game changer.

Full on game changer. UF should have been off the field. Of course, UK had other opportunities to stop them and didn't but that's a tough, tough break.

Yup. But UK has the ball back with plenty of time and only down one after the Inspired Play Call for the conversion. Ain’t over by a long shot.

Trask "played" (read: was the back-up quarterback) for a wide-open run-and-shoot offense in high school. I could see Mullen doing something like that with this group of receivers - go four or five wide on most plays, give Trask a bunch of quick options, make it as much like a 7-on-7 high school camp as possible.

Second in the series. Last year they were in the delivery room when dad got the surprising news that the baby was a Tech fan.

Pretty soft PI flag there.

Good decision by the Kentucky QB to take advantage of the free play though and underthrow a deep ball.

I'm not entirely sure that the ongoing story of a man being cuckolded is really what I need to see from a soda commercial.

I think Mullen just took 6 seconds after that play ended to call a timeout.
