Blech.

Julian Edelman was a quarterback at Kent State

so was Josh Cribbs

Louisville, by some miracle, gets a stop.
   204. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: December 30, 2017 at 03:44 PM (#5598876)
Just in time for the 2016 offensive line to show up.
   205. Cowboy Popup Posted: December 30, 2017 at 03:46 PM (#5598877)
This (the offensive line) is why Jackson should leave. Louisville has put so little around him. This feels like a program that is going to crater when he leaves unless Petrino has another stud in the wings.

And then he still converts on fourth and long and keeps the game alive. But he's now out of time.
   206. Cowboy Popup Posted: December 30, 2017 at 03:48 PM (#5598878)
What an arm. See ya.
   207. Cowboy Popup Posted: December 30, 2017 at 03:51 PM (#5598879)
Iowa State with a big stop. This would be a big win for them (at least their 3rd ranked win of the year) and the Big 12.
   208. Cowboy Popup Posted: December 30, 2017 at 03:56 PM (#5598881)
That's game. Well done Matt Campbell.

Edit: I wonder if this is the best Iowa State team ever. I know very little about the program.

Double edit: Probably not. There are some squads from the 70s that have higher SRS ratings and slightly better records (8-3, 8-4). Still, those two wins over OU and TCU might still give this squad an argument.
   209. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: December 30, 2017 at 04:17 PM (#5598888)
C'mon, Washington defense. 3rd-and-long and you crap your pants twice.

   210. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: December 30, 2017 at 04:21 PM (#5598889)
I went back to the 2015 Bowl Spectacular, because I vaguely remembered that's where I took the keys of the Lamarwagon. Early in the Music City Bowl I was hopeful that Louisville had solidified the quarterback position. By the second quarter I had declared him "pure magic." By the fourth I had decided Lamarliness was next to godliness.
   211. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: December 30, 2017 at 04:33 PM (#5598891)
That's a great pick.

I'll trade all the toe-drag interceptions in the world for the ability to get off the field on third down, though.
   212. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: December 30, 2017 at 04:49 PM (#5598893)
If Washington couldn't get stops the four chances it had on 3rd-and-long, what hope was there on 3rd-and-2?

And still more than three hours until the Orange Bowl. Gonna be a long afternoon.
   213. Pasta-diving Jeter (jmac66) Posted: December 30, 2017 at 04:54 PM (#5598894)
Pac 12 currently 1-7 in bowl games--if this continues, 1-8
   214. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: December 30, 2017 at 05:02 PM (#5598895)
Another 3rd-and-7. Jesus Christ.
   215. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: December 30, 2017 at 05:21 PM (#5598898)
That quick kick sure looks like a great idea.
   216. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: December 30, 2017 at 05:44 PM (#5598908)
Lordy, a stop!
   217. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: December 30, 2017 at 06:19 PM (#5598916)
And after all that, it's a game.
   218. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: December 30, 2017 at 06:29 PM (#5598920)
But then Washington's defense gets right back to getting burned on third downs.
   219. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: December 30, 2017 at 06:47 PM (#5598923)
"Look at the third downs: Nine-of-ten. This is 3rd-and-8, though."

Dude, you're calling the game. All but three of those conversions had been six yards or more.

And of course this one was picked up with ease.
   220. Srul Itza Posted: December 30, 2017 at 07:29 PM (#5598925)
Should the Huskies maybe have called a time out at some point?
   221. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: December 30, 2017 at 07:35 PM (#5598926)
Aww, he could've run out of bounds at the Penn State 45 and bought another play.
   222. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: December 30, 2017 at 07:36 PM (#5598927)
Should the Huskies maybe have called a time out at some point?

Washington used its timeouts at 3:02, 1:39 and 1:34.

Story of the game:

First drive: 12-yard pass on 3rd-and-10, 48-yard touchdown pass on 3rd-and-8. (7-0)
Second drive: 17-yard pass on 3rd-and-6; interception in the end zone. (7-0)
Third drive: 9-yard pass on 3rd-and-7, touchdown run on 3rd-and-goal from the two. (14-0)
Fourth drive: 26-yard pass on 3rd-and-6; touchdown. (21-7)
Fifth drive: Touchdown on the second play. (28-7)
Sixth drive: Fumble on the first play. (28-7)
Seventh drive: 2-yard run on 3rd-and-1, 5-yard completion on 3rd-and-9; punt. (28-14)
Eighth drive: 11-yard pass on 3rd-and-7, 24-yard touchdown pass on 3rd-and-4. (35-21)
Ninth drive: 9-yard pass on 3rd-and-8, run for -4 on 3rd-and-2, 7-yard pass on 4th-and-6; interception. (35-21)
Tenth drive: 5-yard pass on 3rd-and-10; punt. (35-21)
Eleventh drive: 12-yard pass on 3rd-and-7, 3-yard run on 3rd-and-1, 14-yard pass on 3rd-and-8, 1-yard run on 3rd-and-2; missed field goal. (35-28)

Just couldn't get off the field.
   223. Zonk, Genius of the Stables Posted: December 30, 2017 at 10:06 PM (#5598956)
6-0, with Wisky up 10 at the half and just Michigan left... has any conference ever had an 8-0 bowl season?
   224. Cowboy Popup Posted: December 30, 2017 at 10:39 PM (#5598966)
This game is awesome. Took almost two hours to get the little monsters to sleep but it looks like I got here just in time (turned it on for the Miami sack on third down).
   225. Misirlou doesn't live in the restaurant Posted: December 30, 2017 at 10:55 PM (#5598978)
OK, these Chic-fit-et commercials. Christams and NYE themed commercials advertising their catering business. Do the producers understand that Chik-fil-et is always closed on Sundays? or have they made an exepction for NYE this year? It would be funny if these ads produced a ton of people calling to arrange catering to their NYE parties, only to have C-F-E say "Sorry we are closed on Sundays."
   226. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: December 30, 2017 at 11:23 PM (#5598988)
He may've missed a chip shot, but that glorious mullet makes him a winner regardless.

Wow. I did not give Wisc a chance. 7-0!

Michigan-South Carolina is shaping up to be the expected disaster. UCF-Auburn not starting much better.
   230. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 01, 2018 at 12:57 PM (#5599246)
And then Milton pulls a Clint Stoerner.
   231. Zonk, Genius of the Stables Posted: January 01, 2018 at 01:02 PM (#5599250)
Michigan isn't very good - but Carolina seems intent on making as many mistakes as it takes to keep the B1G perfect.

Michigan isn't very good - but Carolina seems intent on making as many mistakes as it takes to keep the B1G perfect.

Michigan has a very good defense, but the offense is a mess. Harbaugh can't find a decent quarterback, his o-line is mediocre, and none of the receivers have shown any kind of ability to create space.
   233. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 01, 2018 at 01:15 PM (#5599264)
Rushing three and spying Stidham on 3rd-and-17. Who thought that was a good idea?
   234. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 01, 2018 at 01:42 PM (#5599274)
Milton has looked completely overwhelmed as a passer, but he picked up two third downs with runs on the field goal drive, and now an 18-yard scramble for a touchdown.
   235. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 01, 2018 at 01:53 PM (#5599278)
Quint Kessenich breathlessly reporting that Notre Dame linebacker Nyles Morgan had been stripped of his captaincy with zero information beyond "not wearing a 'C' on his jersey" and "was not at midfield for the coin toss." This is in the second quarter and seems to have no relation to anything that's going on in the game at all.
   236. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 01, 2018 at 01:59 PM (#5599279)
Milton's 2/14 for 14 yards and just missed what should've been an easy 48-yard touchdown pass.
   237. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 01, 2018 at 02:06 PM (#5599283)
LSU with some blowing-the-hurricane-game-against-Florida clownery, false starting on 4th-and-goal from like two inches away, then honking the chip shot field goal.
   238. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 01, 2018 at 02:09 PM (#5599284)
At 16-3, I write "Game Over" in my Hall of Fame Bowl notebook.

Stidham on the take today? Lots of slips and bad balls.
   240. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: January 01, 2018 at 02:11 PM (#5599286)
That was 1st game all season where neither team had 100yds at half.
Hall of Fame bowl.
   241. Zonk, Genius of the Stables Posted: January 01, 2018 at 02:15 PM (#5599287)
TD Woleverines.

Not necessarily saying bowl season success makes it a done deal that excluding the B1G was a mistake, but on their way to a pretty convincing 8-0 is probably as good a case as could be made.

...and now a pick.
   242. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 01, 2018 at 02:30 PM (#5599291)
Celebrity Hot Tub!
   243. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 01, 2018 at 02:37 PM (#5599294)
It's weird how people make a big deal about Bentley going from his junior year in high school to starting for South Carolina. He turned 19 in November of his freshman year.
   244. Zonk, Genius of the Stables Posted: January 01, 2018 at 02:47 PM (#5599300)
Now Michigan seems intent on meeting the requisite number of mistakes necessary to blow this game.
   245. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 01, 2018 at 02:47 PM (#5599301)
Dammit, Michigan, you're gonna make me pay attention to the fourth quarter of this game.

Dammit, Michigan, you're gonna make me pay attention to the fourth quarter of this game.

Meh, you should've known better than to think Michigan was good enough to coast to victory.
   247. Zonk, Genius of the Stables Posted: January 01, 2018 at 03:07 PM (#5599313)
Well if urban Meyer wasn't going to provide the blemish, harbaugh would be a solid 2nd choice.
   248. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 01, 2018 at 03:12 PM (#5599314)
Don't worry. John O'Korn's got this...
   249. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 01, 2018 at 03:18 PM (#5599317)
Pfft. Would've been better off with O'Korn.
   250. greenback wears sandals on his head Posted: January 01, 2018 at 03:21 PM (#5599318)
Pfft. Would've been better off with O'Korn.

O'Korn has taken a lot of ####, and I can't say nice things about him. But in his defense, mysteriously all three quarterbacks have sucked this year, and O'Korn had the misfortune of facing the good teams of the Big Ten.
   251. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 01, 2018 at 03:25 PM (#5599321)
Would've been better off with O'Korn returning that punt.
   252. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 01, 2018 at 03:27 PM (#5599324)
Milton completed more passes on that drive than he did the entire first half.
   253. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 01, 2018 at 03:41 PM (#5599326)
Well, at least that dreadful game's not going to overtime.

Peach has been peachy.
   255. Tom Nawrocki Posted: January 01, 2018 at 03:46 PM (#5599328)
Jeez, Michigan. Is there a procedure for expelling a team from the Big Ten?
   256. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 01, 2018 at 03:58 PM (#5599330)
Argh. 10-point lead with seven minutes left probably would've sealed it.
   257. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 01, 2018 at 04:03 PM (#5599332)
w00t.

   261. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 01, 2018 at 04:20 PM (#5599339)
LSU's decision to kick a field goal on 4th-and-goal from two inches was suboptimal.
   262. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 01, 2018 at 04:26 PM (#5599340)
That's what happens when you play for the field goal.
   263. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 01, 2018 at 04:35 PM (#5599343)
Deep, heaving sigh of relief.
   264. Cowboy Popup Posted: January 01, 2018 at 04:42 PM (#5599344)
Scott Frost has a swagger to him that seems different from most headcoaches. Dude also looks like he could still play.

Now it's time to just wait...
   265. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 01, 2018 at 05:22 PM (#5599348)
Boom. Boom. Boom.

If this were a tennis match, Oklahoma would be up 5-1.
   267. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 01, 2018 at 06:44 PM (#5599353)
It drives me crazy that Fowler thinks the touch pass on a jet sweep is a POP pass.
   268. AuntBea calls himself Sky Panther Posted: January 01, 2018 at 07:52 PM (#5599365)
If this were a tennis match, Oklahoma would be up 5-1.

Tennis set, or tennis match? Semi-serious question, because I saw the first two drives (7-7) and the last one by Georgia. Down 5-1 in the first set of a 3-set match I can see...
   269. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 01, 2018 at 07:58 PM (#5599367)
Through the first six possessions, Oklahoma had three touchdowns and two stops. The analogy falls apart when teams stop scoring touchdowns at the rate players hold serve. Or it became a WTA match at some point.
   270. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: January 01, 2018 at 08:03 PM (#5599368)
Well Fowler does do tennis, so there's that.
   271. Crosseyed and Painless Posted: January 01, 2018 at 08:19 PM (#5599371)
This feels like the ultimate battle between routinely crushed fan-bases (at least relative to their justifiably lofty expectations) and someone's about to really lose a heart-breaker no matter what happens here.
   272. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 01, 2018 at 08:31 PM (#5599375)
And that may be that.
   273. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 01, 2018 at 08:45 PM (#5599377)
I think you've gotta put the game in Mayfield's hands on that 3rd-and-3. And not in a let-him-make-the-right-decision-on-an-option manner.
   274. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: January 01, 2018 at 08:47 PM (#5599378)
The clock didn't run on that 3rd-and-10 with 1:06 left.
   275. Crosseyed and Painless Posted: January 01, 2018 at 08:47 PM (#5599379)
Why is Georgia hurrying-up with one minute left on first and goal and two timeouts? I guess momentum could be a thing but doesn't seem worth it.
   276. AuntBea calls himself Sky Panther Posted: January 01, 2018 at 08:49 PM (#5599380)
When they got the first down inside the 10 they should've taken some time off the clock. I think at least 20 seconds.

Edit: clock was stopped after the pass interference penalty anyway...
   277. AuntBea calls himself Sky Panther Posted: January 01, 2018 at 08:53 PM (#5599382)
20 seconds would have made a big difference. Georgia still would have 40 seconds to score from the 7 with 2 TOs.
   278. AuntBea calls himself Sky Panther Posted: January 01, 2018 at 08:55 PM (#5599383)
That 3rd and 2 call made no sense! Gah.

Edit: It would have made sense if there were 10 seconds left on the clock, or they were 15 yards further upfield (where they could consider going for it on 4th down).
   279. Crosseyed and Painless Posted: January 01, 2018 at 08:55 PM (#5599384)
Oh man, wanted to see UGA go for it here. I get not doing it but that would've been more fun. Not that OT isn't fun.

Alabama three-and-out.

I'm just glad that it finally ended. College football OT rules are the biggest joke in sports. Thank God the NFL hasn't copied them.

Because I love me a good argument, which college football rules do you think are significantly better mrams?

Looking at Wikipedia here's how I'd rate it:

2 feet vs 1 foot inbounds to make catch: FG for College, getting any part of your body down makes sense
Down by contact rule: FG for College, more objective rule, easier to referee, losing control of yourself should end the play anyway
Defensive PI: FG for NFL, you're trying to restore equity on the player making the catch, which is a spot foul, you shouldn't be able to just hack on a hail mary and only get 15 yards
Clock stops for a first down: TD for NFL, you shouldn't change the rules of the game because of bookkeeping
Defensive holding: don't have strong feelings about this one, eh
Team spot taking possession on missed FG: TD for College, it's super weird that the kicking team just loses 7 yards in the NFL
2-minute warning: TD for College, this is a super arbitrary NFL rule that is unnecessary
Starting point of 1 and 2 point conversion: TD + 2 point conversion for College, having different lines for going for 1 and 2 is weird (among other things why does the offense have to declare which one they're doing, whic his the case in no other down)?
OT: TD + 2 point conversion for NFL; College OT is basically a penalty shootout that bears little resemblance to football
Instant Replay: FG for college, I hate review in general, but college is more consistent (all plays subject to potential booth review)
Hash mark distance: it's crazy that they're so different; NFL makes a bit more sense to have it the width of the goalposts. FG for NFL

Athletic Supporter's Rules Final Score: College 31, NFL 21

Hash marks are the winner for me. Favors offensive innovation and makes FGa more difficult.

1 foot vs 2 is clearly better in college for reasons given mostly.

I prefer college PI, unless you are willing to call off PI the same way in Nfl.

2 point conversion much better in college. Stunned NFL didn't allow it forever. Replay system in college better. Isn't tethered to challenges.

Blocking downfield better in college though getting closer to NFL lately.

Catch rule in college. Drops mic.

Ps, I love stopped clock for 1st down. Provides better late game drama.

Pps, downing ball on punt, ball matters above all else.

Even though target rule is a mess in college it is improving. College halftime is too long, but that's due to bands, but again NFL w/o bands makes it pretty lame imo.

The NFL moved it back because they wanted to create more disincentive for FGs, which are being made at greater regularity from a longer distance. Kinda dumb because it's just 7 yards. They should narrow the goalposts instead.

I like the college hashmarks, and don't like the nfl extra point. I lean against the clock stopping on first down, though I can see it either way. College targeting is stupid but doesn't matter much. The fewer plays reviewed the better, so I like the pros' version, but not by much.

I really can see liking either set of rules better--except the college OT is the worst of abominations. That alone makes it a slight win for the NFL.
