OT - March 2017 NBA thread

I estimate only 10-12 Primates care about the NBA, none of bothered to submit a monthly thread to avoid detracting from what this site is really about:  I dunno, baseball, maybe?  Probably politics, but maybe some baseball, too.

Hearing if Cavs-Pacers talks go well 76ers could be included as a 3rd team & possible landing spot for Love if IND prefer picks & prospects.

@Probballdraft
Heard before the draft 76ers wanted to add shooters and a veteran to young core and were willing to trade for it. Fultz and Love are that.

>>Before Cavs fans start worrying about a potentially franchise-altering trade, they should be concerned about the fact that their team barely has a GM right now. For whatever reason, owner Dan Gilbert has yet to extend GM David Griffin’s contract, which expires on June 30. Griffin spent this entire season as a bit of a lame duck, and not even James publicly advocating for Griffin to get a new contract could move the needle.<<

Sorry, STIGGLES. I'm still holding out hope that Hood can stay healthy and be a perfectly acceptable starting SG. I think the Pacers will end up doing fine on a George deal. At first, it seemed like the CW was the acquiring team can't give up too much because he's just a rental. But nearly every team would be willing to give up a pick+ for him, so once you have a handful of contenders, plus the Lakers, etc., kicking the tires on a deal, I feel like it's going to escalate fast.

At this point, given my total confusion on where Boston is headed, I've already talked myself into something like the #3, next year's Brooklyn pick, and a non-Horford or Isaiah starter. I would think that would top most other conceivable offers? Love is probably more valuable than any individual player that Boston would be willing to include, but Cleveland has no draft assets.

i thought the same thing about a nerlens noel trade at the deadline.

Fine, offer them the money, but make it a one year deal. If anyone wanted to top that Lakers should have passed since comparable players were, are, and will continue to be available for chump change.

The Lakers organization should have done that. But in charge was Jim Buss, who was running out of time in the Buss family power struggle. He needed to get back to playoffs immediately or he would get fired. For him, there was no tomorrow - and the deals reflect that.

That might even be too much. I was thinking the 3 and Smart, which would not be a bad return for Indy.

I don't see Boston offering such a deal before free agency. That would preclude them from clearing cap space for a max contract. Maybe after they miss out on their targets.

They would have to match enough salary to preserve the cap space, true. That might mean they'd have to include Zeller, who is at $8m for next year to get close to PG's 19. I think it's probably still doable if it has to get done before the draft for Indy's purposes.

Bolden has been at the top of my board for maybe 10 picks. Great combination of size and quickness, one of the better 3D prospects in the draft. Had a very good season as a 20 year old for Radmicki, in the Adriatic league which is a legit league with other graduated notables, being Jokic and Saric who along with Bolden also won Adriatic league ROY. Not young, almost 22 which is a mark against him generally, but with the Celtics already having 3 developmental players on their roster - and 2 more picks to come having someone who can hopefully play some minutes would be very useful. Based on athletism and length - hopefully he can be an NBA defender now. I think he is raw offensively, and may not get their but I love his defensive potential and you don't need much more than that in the second round.

Bradley is a great pick. I had him and Bolden as clearly the top 2 on my board and Bolden higher due to positional scarcity and short term playability but Allen's is a great combination of statistical projection and measurable that are hard not to love. I have (and Bolden) in my top 20.

B: joel embiid, ed davis, jahlil okafor, tony bradley
all of the above: ben simmons

i thought about stashing a euro big man, but i like bradley's potential more than any of the ones that are left.

monte morris's tape is basketball pornography. he needs to get better at shooting the 3 and he needs to hit the weight room, but the way he manipulated opposing defenders is stockton-esque and that's unteachable.

Possibly. Who are they?

They're both big men. Majok is 29. He averaged 9 points, 9 rebounds, 1.2 steals, and 4.5 blocks per 36 in the D-League in 2015. Since then he's been in Poland, China, and Lebanon. Dragicevic is 31. He's a former Adriatic League MVP (he did it before Saric and Jokic made it cool) who now plays in Greece.

Dandy - Sure, why not? I guess I'll take the younger guy (Majok?). I'm sure he'll never make the NBA, but the 55th pick probably won't either and mainly I'm just curious to see what you're planning on doing with it. I was probably gonna pick someone like Dwayne Bacon if he was still around just cuz of his name (c'mon, who doesn't love bacon?).

The Bulls select Jawun Evans, PG Oklahoma State. I'll write something up on him later.

Between trading Rondo and assuredly not re-signing MCW, I've created an opening at the point guard spot for the Bulls. Enter Jawun Evans.

Though he's a shade under 6 feet tall (5'11.5"), there's a lot to like about Evans. On offense, what sets him apart from other prospects is his shot creation ability, both for himself and for others. His combination of shotmaking, craftiness off the dribble, understanding of passing angles, and vision despite his size reminds me strongly of Terrell Brandon, who was one of my favorite players growing up. Like Brandon, Evans creates space with quick changes of direction, crossovers, step backs, and the ability to stop or speed up without warning. He lacks a lightning quick first step like De’Aaron Fox or John Wall, but once he’s started dribbling he’s similarly difficult to contain. Even when double teamed or seemingly smothered by bigger defenders, Evans has an uncanny ability to find his way out and sling a pass in any direction to the open man.

In addition to Evans’s improvisational dribbling and passing skills, he’s a prolific pick-and-roll ball handler. More than half of his offense came out of the pick-and-roll this past year, making him better prepared than most point guard prospects to run NBA teams’ PnR-heavy offensive sets.

And then there's the fact that Oklahoma State, without much apparent NBA talent, had the nation's most efficient offense this past year. Evans was far and away most responsible for that achievement, as he led the Big 12 in both usage and assist%. I wrote more on Evans here.

I think Evans's realistic ceiling is higher than any other prospect outside the top 15 in our draft, and certainly higher than Jerian Grant's most optimistic projection. For the upcoming season I'd keep Grant in the role of starter--providing secondary ball handling and spot-up shooting alongside Butler--with Evans and Cameron Payne competing for the lion's share of minutes on a second unit otherwise bereft of playmaking (presuming Wade doesn't return in a 6th man role). Woj says the Bulls and Wolves have been in contact on Butler. Makes sense. Some combination of Wiggins/LaVine/Dunn/the #7 pick has a lot more upside than the other offers that have been discussed (unless Philly/Boston just piles on the picks).

If LaVine/Dunn/#7 really got the job done, Minnesota should have made that trade yesterday. I think Wiggins/Dunn/#7 is also worth doing, though Wiggins has been marketed pretty heavily and is one of the faces. I think that does have some small amount of value, to where I think LaVine is easier to move even if they could use his shooting a bit more.

I'm up for the Wiggins offer. All the marketing in the world still won't get you in the playoffs or the top 10 in DRTG. I'm legitimately worried about the ceiling for Wiggins on defense. He's still young enough that a breakthrough could be coming (and he hasn't had a good coaching situation what with Sam Mitchell and a death). I might try a middle ground approach of Dunn and Wiggins or #7 and Wiggins and see if that gets Chicago to bite.

Going slight STIGGLES for a moment:

PG: Rubio. Bench: Jones
W: Butler, Iguodala. Bench: Lavine, Muhammad
Bigs: Towns, Dieng. Bench: Bjelica, Aldrich

Wait, was I supposed to include Kyle Lowry in there? Is that one of the rules?

Anyone in the next few picks want to name their price from GSW? I can't offer much that would be fun for this mock draft (two future 2nds?), but I'm pretty sure the real life Warriors would be able to find a seller for $3M or so in this range, and there's a player I think they'd draft.

Woj is claiming on twitter that Chauncey Billups is expected to emerge as a candidate to replace Griffin. Chauncey's always struck me as a bright guy, but it sounds ####### crazy to me to hire someone with no front office experience in the most active part of the offseason.

He's friendly with LeBron, though, so maybe he is qualified after all.

that's partially true. the allowance resets on july 1, so they can make a handshake agreement on draft night and then complete it when the league year resets.

With pick #40, New Orleans selects Frank Mason, PG out of Kansas.

The draft seems to be pretty deep in big men, and that's not a need for New Orleans. We still have Asik & Ajinca as one reserve big man too many.

They have Tim Frazier & Quinn Cook at point guard under contract for next year, and they need someone to come in and compete at the absolute minimum. Mason is on the small size, but is experienced, and shoots well. I'm pretty confident he's a reserve PG in the NBA, and I don't see any likely starters out there this deep in the draft.

The Pelicans are done drafting, unless someone wants to do something for Asik or Ajinca.

Made especially difficult by the fact that they don't have a GM currently.

I can't imagine what they could come up with aside from Love. It would require some very dumb team to give up actual value for the Shumperts of the world.

i've been thinking about kevin love since earlier today when it leaked that the sixers were a possible landing spot.

ultimately, i'm in favor of it, so long as the cost isn't too prohibitive. he's still an elite defensive rebounder, he's a great 3P shooter, i love his FT rate and he's capable of handling a high usage. i don't know that a simmons/fultz/covington/love/embiid lineup would be amazing, but it has the potential to be. and if the lebron/LA thing happens this summer, getting love would jumpstart the sixers' decade of dominance.

unrelated, from a podcast with sixers beat writer keith pompey:
"The Stauskas/Pick Swap trade was so lopsided that a Sixers executive told me to stop writing about it so Vlade wouldn't get upset."

This far down in the draft, it couldn't hurt to throw a local guy a bone. If nothing else, he'll get some cheers from the home crowd if and when he ever gets into a game in garbage time, just like Joel Bolomboy does whenever Snyder lets him make a last minute cameo.

Therefore, with the 42nd pick the Jazz select Kyle Kuzma, PF Utah.

STIGGLES and Philly are back up again.

Anyone in the next few picks want to name their price from GSW? I can't offer much that would be fun for this mock draft (two future 2nds?), but I'm pretty sure the real life Warriors would be able to find a seller for $3M or so in this range, and there's a player I think they'd draft.

50 is available, if you're still interested. We need to raise some cash to make a run at Millsap.

I wasn't sure they'd be able to talk him into this, though maybe this was already agreed upon. They still look to only have around 25 million in cap space, though. I wonder if that'd be enough to get Chris Paul, or if they still need to get Tony Parker to do something like retire. Similarly, I wonder if the Spurs are trying to go after any of the other guys. They probably don't have the pieces for Butler/George unless a team valued LAM/Danny Green reasonably well (and wanted them, to not bottom out). I wonder if Hayward would come to SA.

I'd like to see the Spurs bite the bullet on the tax this year to get one of the big guys (if they'll come) and try to resign Dedmon and Simmons. Maybe they'd even be able to avoid the tax, since it looks like starts at $121. They have a fair amount of coming off the books after next year with Parker and Gasol, although Gasol's new deal will add some of that back.

I don't really want to root for Chris Paul, who I've found less likable over time.

Here is Orlando's roster of players under contract for next year + mock draft players:

Point Guards: Elfrid Payton, DJ Augustin, CJ Watson, Frank Jackson
Wings: Fournier, Terrence Ross, Mario Hezonja, Jayson Tatum, DJ Wilson
Bigs: Biyombo, Vucevic, Aaron Gordon, Stephen Zimmerman, Caleb Swanigan

guys I've never heard of: Patricio Garino, Marcus Georges-Hunt.

Possible trade bait: veteran guards (Augustin has three more years on his contract and Watson has one). Still don't know why they signed Biyombo to play 22 MPG for $17 million.

Random idea kicking around my head that's either stupid for the Knicks or stupid for the Lakers, but I can't quite figure out which:

Melo for Mozgov, Deng and Russell.

May be some salary around the margins that needs to be worked out, but after July 1, I think it works.

Toronto summary:

We're going to (attempt to) resign Lowry, Tucker and Ibaka, and then package Cory Joseph with Valanciunas to clear cap room sufficient to offer Millsap the max. The team then would look like:

Lowry/DeRozan/Tucker/Millsap/Ibaka
Wright/Powell/Stauskas/Poeltl

Hmmm. Still a little thin on the wing, and that bench, yikes. But we're going to trot the team out for one last shot at the brass ring before blowing everything up.

The same article that said Utah should target Eric Bledsoe if they lost Hill mentioned trading Favors and Burks to clear up enough cap space to bring back Millsap on a max deal. AFAIK he never had anything bad to say about the Jazz or Salt Lake during his 7 years here, so it might be more within the realm of possibility than targeting most other max caliber free agents would be. Assuming STAYWARD happens, this mid-level STIGGLES-esque scenario would give Utah a starting lineup of Millsap, Hayward, Gobert, Bledsoe, and Hood, with guys like Ingles and Iso-Joe coming off the bench. I wholeheartedly approve of this proposal.

The same article that said Utah should target Eric Bledsoe if they lost Hill mentioned trading Favors and Burks to clear up enough cap space to bring back Millsap on a max deal.

I'm not an expert on cap stuff, but is that really possible?

Accoring to the contracts on BBREF, Utah has about $74mil in obligations. Won't Hayward eat up all of that? My understanding is as a 7 year vet he'll get like 30 million/year. Burks and Favors only make like 22, so they don't represent enough room to give Millsap the max. I'm also skeptical that moving Burks would be easy without giving up an asset.

I guess they could potentially sign Millsap first, then go over the cap to resign Hayward, right? I think there's a number of teams that are in a similar-ish boat here. The order in which the FA dominoes fall seems like it will dictate what teams are able to do.
   6395. Booey Posted: June 20, 2017 at 12:21 PM (#5479167)

No idea. I don't really follow the cap situation much either, but I think the article mentioned jettisoning Diaw as well (which I'm totally okay with, Millsap or no).

6399. TFTIO sings Medieval Agrarian History Posted: June 20, 2017 at 12:29 PM (#5479175)
I mean, I'd be all over Porzingis in a Twin Towers sort of jam with Towns. I don't know too many teams that wouldn't jump on that.

lebron seems like he already has one foot out the door, and we saw how that worked out in 2009. if CLE just fired their GM because they didn't want to mortgage their future for one last run with lebron, why even make one last run with lebron?

a kyrie/klay/love core gives CLE a 50/50 chance of getting to the NBA finals for the next 3 years, plus it kneecaps GSW going forward.
