is it just me, or does it seem like african-american coaches get fired inordinately quickly?

ty willingham only lasted 3 years at notre dame
charlie strong lasted 3 years at texas
taggert now got axed after 2 years at fsu
kevin sumlin was pushed off a cliff to get jimbob fisher

and those aren't even the 100-ish schools have never bothered to hire an african-american head coach in the first place.

all of that is to say:

florida state should hire warrick dunn

But there have got to be *some* fiscal constraints now, given how much money they're still shelling out for Taggart, right?
I assumed so, but ESPN is reporting that boosters ponied up the 20 million required to buy Taggart out of his deal. Which is kind of insane when you think about it. I guess technically FSU will lose out on some of that booster money, but the financial hit to the program doesn't look quite as bad as expected. No matter what, there are no quick fixes going forward.

I have mixed emotions right now because it was hard not to like Willie even if his coaching wasn't moving the program forward. Unsurprisingly, he took the high road:

"On behalf on my family and I, we wish Florida State nothing but the best and will be cheering on the Seminoles the rest of the way."

oh what a bunch of bullshit, stiggles, especially coming from someone who has used every bullshit justification in the book to root for a school that refuses to apologize for a history that makes the catholic church look clean. Taggart went 9-12 at FSU in AC-######-C, and the shelf wasn't THAT bare when he showed up. I don't care if you're white, black or puerto-######-rican, that will get you fired. What, you expect FSU to let Clemson get so far ahead that it takes a generation to catch back up instead of a mere half-decade? Maybe FSU should let SC get the drop on the good coaching candidates to make Taggart look better because that's going to fix the problem. Christ, you're such an #######. Can you at least limit your bullshit to the NBA thread?

TL;DR: you go 9-12 at FSU and lose to ALL the rivals, you're getting fired, and you damn well deserve it.

jerry sandusky never should have tortured all those jews to death.

and why won't penn state apologize for helping nazi's flee to south america after WWII?

Minn officially opened at +6.5/+7 home against PSU. 30% chance to win on the money line. Go gophers (but personally I'd bet against them).

taggert at fsu: 5-7, 4-5

frost at nebraska: 4-8, 4-5
morris at arkansas: 2-10, 2-7
luke at les miz: 6-6, 5-7, 3-6
muschamp at socar: 6-7, 9-4, 7-6, 4-5
chip at ucla: 3-9, 4-5

there are plenty of shitty ass white coaches doing shitty ass jobs at "schools" that have similarly high expectations; none of those coaches have boosters writing 20MM checks to get them fired on halloween.
   109. DCA Posted: November 04, 2019 at 07:27 PM (#5898610)
FSU is a tier (or more) above all those other schools. They shouldn't have similarly high expectations. Only Nebraska is even close. They have a storied history, but FSU won a championship this decade and the Huskers haven't been relevant for almost 20 years.

And here come the pretzels excuses!

not really. minnesota probably isn't as good as wofford, but they're still good enough to beat penn state at home.

i kinda like the rankings. personally, i would have put clemson at #9, but i get why that won't happen. the committee should have made an example of them for scheduling wofford in november, on top of not having beaten anyone in the top 25 and damn near losing to north carolina...but again, i get why that won't happen. i just think it should. but then, i also the committee should be given the power to schedule a week of games between top 25 teams, so that they have the ability to challenge teams (cough clemson) that will have played a worthless schedule.

i'm not a huge fan of oregon and utah being ranked that high, but i also don't think florida, auburn or baylor deserve to be ranked above them. wisconsin really ###### themselves well by losing to illinois. without that loss, they may have been ranked #6 or #7. michigan gets no benefit of the doubt after they embarrassed themselves vs. army, but they're better than florida, auburn, baylor and utah.

i also really appreciate the committee throwing a bone to a bunch of G-5 teams at the bottom of the rankings. cincinnati, memphis, boise, navy and smoo are all having great seasons, and they deserve some kind of recognition. i'd love to see navy get into a NY6 bowl...especially since it means they'd have run over notre dame and smoooo to get there.

for some additional frame of reference:
ohio state beat #13 and #20 by a combined 80-7
lsu beat #10 and #11 by a combined 65-48
penn state beat #14 and #18 by a combined 45-33

ohio state has already beaten #13 and #20, and still has to play #4 and #14.
LSU has beaten #10 and #11 and still has to play #3.
alabama hasn't beaten anyone, but they still have to play #2 and #11.
penn state has beaten #14 and #18, and still has to play #1 and #17.
clemson hasn't beaten anyone, and if they beat wake forest, they won't have played anyone, either.

michigan will have played:
#1, #4, #13, #15, #18

clemson will have played:

Hey, now. They'll have to beat #19 Wake Forest. At home. That's not nothing.

(Okay, I just saw that you did mention the mighty Demon Deacons. I have to say, if Wake can play Clemson close - ha! I crack myself up - I doubt they fall in the polls so long as they win out. We're all pretty glad Wake lost a game because the fear was we'd roll into Clemson undefeated and they'd make it a primetime "event" and we'd get beat 60 points).

"Unsurprisingly"? From this Oregon fan's perspective, Taggart certainly took the low road out of Eugene. He still gets that fat chunk of change, but I'm really glad to see him fail after the way he lied his way off the Ducks. Good riddance.

Overshadowing the Deion Sanders to FSU rumors, which are....interesting.
   124. Tom Nawrocki Posted: November 08, 2019 at 09:58 AM (#5899660)
The supposed violation is from 2018. It sounds like tOSU is getting out in front of this to ensure that Young didn't get suspended for the Penn State and/or Michigan games.
   125. Barry`s_Lazy_Boy Posted: November 08, 2019 at 10:23 AM (#5899678)
Deion Sanders as the FSU head coach would be amazingly awesome for college football. I don't know if he'd have success, but it'd be quite the story.

supposedly Young got a loan from a "family friend" and paid it off already (I assume with money he got from babysitting and working burger/fries shifts).

does this make my Maryland +44 pick look better? not sure.

ProFootballTalk@ProFootballTalk
I'm hearing that the "family friend" who gave Chase Young a loan is also an NFLPA-certfied agent. Which if true could possibly cause more problems for the agent than for Young.
   128. Tom Nawrocki Posted: November 08, 2019 at 01:25 PM (#5899752)
Young also described him as a "family friend I've known since the summer before my freshman year at OSU." Don't get me wrong, the NCAA is horrendous, but taking money from people you meet right before you start your college career seems like exactly the thing they're trying to prevent.

Kyle Trask just threw an INT for the Gators, and I think it might be the first truly horrible throw he's made this year. The ESPN analyst blames Pitts for it, but it sure looks to me that even if Pitts goofed up and should have broken inside, he'd have still been well-covered and the safety was in position to break on the ball.

Nice basketball-style chest-pass for the TD by Trask.

Not news, but this Vandy defense is amusingly bad. It doesn't make sense for Vandy to be firing coaches willy-nilly, but not a good look for Mason that no one on D has any idea what they're doing on about 75% of their plays.

Penn State with a field goal to make it 24-13 at the half. If Minnesota had gotten a stop on 4th-and-4 at the 41 with 56 seconds left, there was a very real chance of the game quickly getting out of hand with the Gophers slated to receive the kick to start the third.

Vandy combining loose coverage on short pass routes with terrible tackling, leading to a 66-yard TD reception for Trevon Grimes. Vandy's complete inability to stop these short outside routes is really something else.

Ugh. Minnesota had a first down at Penn State's 39 and moved backwards, then after trading punts and getting theball back at midfield, promptly fumbled. Real chance to take complete command down the tubes.

Penn State then picked up a 3rd-and-10 on its way to a touchdown to get within 24-19. Two-point try failed.

How bad is Rutgers? Maryland, currently losing 52-0, which might not be their worst loss of the year, beat Rutgers 48-7 for their only Big 10 win on the year.

Oh the plus side, Minnesota now within the 5 thanks to yet another good catch by Rashod Bateman, who's having a career game and over 200 yards.

At their very best Vanderbilt aspires to be described as "frisky."

This...this is not Vanderbilt at their best.

Almost as bad as Arkansas.

Also, SKI-U-MAH! Whatever that means.

nah.

i mean, penn state deserves to lose the game, but it has nothing to do with that play call. they ran the ball on 1st, 2nd and 3rd downs, and got nowhere. on 4th down, they tried to get the ball to the best guy on their team.

Minnesota coaches out-bye-week-coach PSU coaches. James Franklin may recruit and motivate but he comes up weak in big games. This game has convinced me of that.

I'm not entirely sure why Kyle Trask is running zone reads (and the option!) up 42-0 in the fourth quarter against Vanderbilt.

More of a pick play that didn't get a pick than a fade.

I'm not either, but on the other hand, it's amusing listening to Orlovsky literally spending several minutes fretting about how the Gators need to establish the run up 42-0.

Baylor driving in the final minute trailing TCU 9-6.

3rd-and-19 from the 34, deep post is *wide open* but overthrown. 51-yard field goal is right down the middle with 36 seconds left.
   172. CFBF's Overflowing Pathos Posted: November 09, 2019 at 03:13 PM (#5900045)
Facing 4th and 9 and down 49-0, Vanderbilt elects to try a 45-yard field goal, figuring that they need just 16 more of those to pull off the comeback.

And then a delay of game forces the kick back five yards, and it's missed.

As a punt returner, when you find yourself trying to make any sort of awkward or acrobatic catch, it's probably best just to let the punt bounce.

Making that tackle at the 10 feels like the worst thing that could've happened for Minnesota.

if they can win out, they're in the CFP.

Gotta go to Iowa but they get Wisky at home. It could happen, at least until the B1G championship game.

Baylor scores first in overtime, and now TCU throws the ball into the corner of the end zone on fourth down from the 24, called out of bounds but overturned on review. Hand was down in bounds, and the ball got knocked out after the play.

they had 3 downs to get 25 yards; no matter your play-calling, the odds aren't very good. taking 3 shots at the endzone is a reasonable decision, even though it didn't work out. also the intended receiver on that play was held at the top of his break and the refs decided to let it go (after throwing the flag on a ticky-tack offensive pass interference that pushed penn state from 3rd and 3, to 2nd and 25).

   186. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: November 09, 2019 at 03:33 PM (#5900061)
tbf, the last PSU touchdown was run with 0 seconds on the clock, so complaining about ticky tack penalties is bullshit.
   187. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: November 09, 2019 at 03:38 PM (#5900063)
And the second overtime goes just about like the first, with TCU scoring and Baylor answering with a 21-yard touchdown on fourth down.

Odell Haggins remains undefeated as coach of the Seminoles with a nice win in a place far, far colder than Tallahassee. FSU unleashes Jordan Travis for the first time, QB transfer from Louisville - and he runs for 94 yards and 2 TDs on a handful of snaps. Makes you wonder why Taggart didn't play him?

Speaking of, just a quick touch on Willie. I know Oregon fans don't like him. I get it. Jimbo left FSU in a similar way, and actually in a much worse position going forward. It ticks me off a bit, but it's still just college football, for better or worse. Coaches bounce to a better spot, and leaving their former team is often an ugly process. I could be wrong, but I still feel Taggart's a decent guy even if I wasn't in love with him as a coach.

And no, Deion is not going to be the next FSU coach.

but if they can do it, that strength of schedule will be enough to get them in. they control their own destiny, which isn't at all true for baylor, oregon or oklahoma, who will each require someone else's help to get in.

for what it's worth, penn state may also still control their own destiny. if they beat tosu, sneak into the b1g championship game and avenge this loss (with some style points), their resume should have a clear edge over oklahoma, oregon, clemson, georgia and whoever else.

neither of those things are very likely, but i think there's a 30% chance that ohio state gets a loss put on them before the CFP.
tbf, the last PSU touchdown was run with 0 seconds on the clock, so complaining about ticky tack penalties is bullshit.
right. because a 5 yard penalty, and a non-call that literally ended the game are roughly equivalent.

Baylor scores on a jump ball to start the third overtime but fails on the two-point try. TCU gets 1st-and-goal from the one and proceeds to move backwards, eventually throwing an interception on fourth down from the 13.
