So this is a little late, but I went to the K-State at Vandy a couple weeks ago. KSU played awful, but the trip was a lot of fun.
The Vandy Stadium seats just 40,000 but has one really weird feature. The stadium has about 75 rows of seats per section. And the tunnel entrance to the rows of seats are at row 16. Yes, I had to schlep up nearly 60 rows of stairs, with a crowd that was heavily retirement age people. There isn't much that could burn there - metal bleachers no chairbacks - but it's a tremendous trampling hazard. I haven't been to a ton of stadiums, but the one's I've been to that are similar usually have some type of rear ramp system.
I would guess that most SEC games in Nashville are pretty full, the crowd was about 50/50 KSU and Vandy, you'd think they might upgrade that.

One funny moment, there was a guy in a Tennessee shirt in the row in front of me. I think he was a local that had relatives from Kansas in for the game. Well KSU did their usual QB running the ball thing, and after about the 4th one, he turns to me and says,'Do you guys always use the QB sneak so much?" I replied, "You know when teams run the Wildcat offense? We're those Wildcats." He seemed to accept that. I think he left at the half though to get back to his drinking.

And Spivey, I think this week your team takes out any frustration you've had with KSU the past couple of seasons. I'm worried it will be ugly, because KSU can't catch the ball, and the team speed seems down this year. I know Baylor still has some fast dudes, but man they made KSU look slow Saturday.

Mike, I went to Michigan and the stadium is set up where there may be one or two exits per section. The exits are probably 2/3 of the way up or more so those at the bottom have the most descending and climbing to do. Michigan's stadium is built into a hill so often lower level egress is impossible. It was always a pain getting out of that stadium.

I too remember that feature about Vandy. You wouldn't like sitting up high at Clemson then. I'm not anti Michigan or anything, but of the marquee program stadiums I've been to it doesn't score very well w me.

Alternate uniforms are never an improvement. Especially when Adidas is involved.

I suspect Bradley Chubb goes Ed Oliver on the Louisville offensive line tonight.

penn state's were really good, probably because they were still appropriately minimalist.
   8. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 05, 2017 at 11:44 PM (#5545754)
I don't like the Nebraska jersey at all. It's essentially the same design as always so barely even qualifies as an alternate, and the mesh motif is just a reminder that jerseys used to be pretty crummy.

Northwestern with multiple bullet holes in its foot in the first 12 minutes. 1st-and-goal followed by a hold, a sack and an interception on third down from the 28. On the subsequent drive, Jackson has a long run to the 21 called back to the 42 because he committed a facemask on a stiff arm, followed by a strip-sack.
   10. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 07, 2017 at 02:16 PM (#5546876)
Barkley with 10 carries for -7 yards. But Northwestern's offense has been pretty helpless after those first two drives that went for naught, so it's not going to matter.

#firstworldproblems and all that, but penn state's offense has still not put together a complete performance yet. they don't have a power running game, they're still not attacking downfield and the playcalling hasn't been able to take advantage when teams load up to stop barkley. a few small tweaks could make a huge difference.

the defense has a great secondary and they can stop the run, but the pass rush still needs improvement.

special teams would be the best in the country if it wasn't for 16 blocked field goal attempts. both coverage units are great, both return units are great.

that targeting call should have been reversed. he was coming for the RB's head, but he pulled up before he made contact. the refs should have given him the benefit of the doubt, especially with review.

The CBS down-and-distance indicator corresponds to the color of the team with the ball and shares real estate on the right side with the yellow penalty pop-up. This is really annoying when LSU has the ball because I think there's a flag on every play. Did no one on the production team think to make LSU purple? Especially considering the text in that space is white?

I hate to complain about arguably the best player on the team, but Duke Dawson has missed three possible interceptions in the last two drives, two of which could conceivably have turned into pick-sixes.

Blackman and Rosier competing to see who can throw the worse interception. Oh, how I long for the Florida State-Miami of my youth.

West Virginia-TCU is heating up. WVU was easily the better team in the first half but trailed 7-3 after being repeatedly pinned by TCU's unconscious punter and not being able to sustain drives despite racking up 230-odd yards. After a TCU field goal, Grier threw an interception and Hill hit a 45-yard pass on the next play to make it 17-3, and it looked like that might be it. Then Grier hit passes of 64 and 76 to tie it, before Hill took a throwback 48 yards to make it 24-17 after three.

Cam Akers looks like a worthy successor to Dalvin Cook. But Florida State's inability to pass block in conjunction with a true freshman at quarterback makes the offense extremely sketchy despite the success running.

I don't think I've ever watched a game where both teams seemed so identical as in the LSU-UF game today. It was like watching one team play against itself - they were even running out of a lot of the same formations. That was a game that deserved to go 6 OTs, but alas for a fluke missed extra point.

I dunno. It's depressing that McElwain isn't further along in year 3 than Ed Orgeron is in year 1.5.

5:43 left in the 4th quarter at Austin, the UT kick misses a 27 yarder that would have tied the game at 27. KSU follows with a 3 and out, so optimism is low..

Running the ball on 3rd-and-31 or the like has never made any sense to me. Heave the dadgum ball. You have at least *some* chance at a completion or interference, and the downside is relinquishing possession...way the hell down the field, just like you will after your four-yard run.

Sparty, looking for a critical first down on 3rd and 3, fumbles the snap. The QB corrals it, tries to work his way through a crowd with an offensive lineman leading the way. QB gets tackled two yards short of the first down marker, but he gets tackled *on top* of his own offensive lineman, who had fallen to the ground. He rolls on top of the lineman with his knee never actually touching the ground, and rolls forward for another three yards to get the first down.

What a weird game.

former LSU star Odell Beckham Jr. headed for possibly season-ending surgery as Giants win an epic battle to lose against the equally determined Chargers. Giants presumably first to from 11-5 to 0-5 with the impressive 27-22 loss as 4 WR all get hurt at once. they'll take the USC QB in the draft next year that the Jets wanted - count on it.

Jets won an absolute must-lose game today vs 0-5 Browns, now saddled with a 3-2 record and mired atop the AFC East with the Patriots and Bills because that's the most Jets-ian thing ever.

ok, back to amateur hour.....

The khaki pants era at Michigan has been full of entertainment and click bait. If Jim Harbaugh isn’t dancing between the raindrops of NCAA rules one minute, he’s singing opera in Italy the next. If you want somebody who’s really good at subtweeting SEC coaches, turning recruiting gimmicks into brand-building exercises and finishing third in the Big Ten East, there’s nobody better than Harbaugh.

I doubt Alvarez was long for him. BA was hoodwinked by Gary, BA didn't like what had happened to the OL regimen, and was trying to take on the Admissions office, which BA knew would be a losing battle. that's the UW fan version. Gary's wife hated Madison, and GA was frustrated by some things about UW as some suggested he hated being under Alvarez's thumb. This is the GA fan version.

Syracuse leads Clemson 17-14 at the half. It was very nearly much bigger than that, as a touchdown that would've made it 21-7 was called back for offensive interference, which was followed by a fumble returned for a touchdown. And Syracuse later had a second down inside the Clemson one but had to settle for a field goal after Dungey got swallowed and hurt on a sneak attempt, then his backup lost three yards on a zone read. Clemson's defense has looked decidedly mortal, with multiple busted coverages including one that resulted in a 66-yard touchdown.

Bryant's ankle has clearly had him compromised to the point that it makes no sense that he was in the game, then he got suplexed on to his shoulder and hit his head on the turf near the end of the half and will presumably miss the rest of the game.
   48. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 13, 2017 at 10:22 PM (#5553702)

“One thing I’ve learned about sports journalists, a lot of them wanna just go to the ballgame, get good seats, and eat free food.”

The Mississippi State Fan Who Took His Revenge On Ole Miss And The Football Press

In the hours after the NCAA’s notice was made public, Freeze, members of his staff, and members of the Ole Miss administration made calls and texts to the numbers of well-known college football writers, writers who then told their followers and fans on Twitter what Ole Miss wanted them to believe: that the alleged infractions were Nutt’s fault, not Freeze’s. In his time at Ole Miss, Freeze had often gone out of his way to talk about “the narrative” of his team’s success. Now, Robertson alleges, he was able to see in real-time how Freeze worked to create this narrative.

Touchdown with 17 seconds left. Two-pointer to tie...

Fails.

You really, really, really can't fail to get a throw off in that situation.

Two things I did not see coming back in mid September. ASU plays defense, now. AZ has the most exciting QB not named LJ. Tate is fun to watch. I was convinced Graham and RichRod were toast by Halloween.

Michigan is not great, Bob.

So .. is Jim McElwain an actual insane person? He came out today and said that he and his family and players have been getting death threats.

Now, to be clear, I don't doubt that there are really, really awful people out there who send coaches and players (and families) all kinds of nasty stuff.

But, he refused to offer details. The university police department said they hadn't heard of anything. Then the school released a statement saying that they had gone to McElwain and he refused to offer more details to the administration.

McElwain has been pretty snippy all along about criticism of his program. He gets defensive really fast for my tastes, but he's kinda had a point the past couple years as he rebuilt the trainwreck on offense that Muschamp left him and won divisional titles anyway.

But did he really come out today with made-up death threats to get people off his back? Even Zook and Muschamp never went that far around the bend. Something is pretty messed up here one way or the other.

All Chryst and no Love makes Stanford a dull watch.

A six-yard punt and fumble set Stanford up in scoring position twice, and it came away with three points out of those two possessions. It recovers another fumble at the OSU 40 with 2:30 left, trailing 14-9.

I would've put money on Stanford not picking up 4th-and-10.

After scoring -- on a fade -- Stanford goes for two. Pass interference on a fade, half the distance. Pass interference on a fade, half the distance. The ball is now 27 inches from the goal line, and Stanford throws another fade that gets batted away.

so, this seems fun:
In the Detroit News, the parents of Michigan quarterback Wilton Speight have a harrowing account of the treatment their son received at Purdue last month after a hit that left him with three fractured vertebrae in his back.
...It’s not clear why Speight wasn’t transported directly to a hospital by ambulance.

Instead, Wilton sat in the front seat of a van provided by Purdue and driven by a student. The Speights, two medical trainers, a doctor and Thai Trinh, an orthopedic sports medicine fellow at Michigan, piled into a van to be transported to the student health clinic, about two blocks from the stadium.

“We take off with no escort,” Bobby Speight said. “We can’t get through because there are barricades up and (the van driver is) directing people to move them.”

BC 35 FSU 3. Not a score I expected to see in my lifetime.

BC 35 FSU 3. Not a score I expected to see in my lifetime.

Nor I. Last time FSU had a losing season, I was in grade school and Gerald Ford was President. So this year has been pretty weird.

Scheduling Alabama first was just stupid, the air was simply let out of the balloon after that game...and nothing seems to be bringing it back. The team has checked out, and it's sad to watch. No doubt Jimbo will have to fire some coaches in the offseason, and I guess we'll see what happens from there.

North Carolina's dominating Miami but only leads 3-0. Had a drive to the one and turned the ball over on downs after having a touchdown overturned on review and missing an uncovered receiver on third down. Drove inside the five again only to miss another open receiver on third down before kicking a field goal. Then lined up for a 42-yard field goal and faked it -- on 4th-and-18.

Peters in for O'Korn and immediately goes 3-for-3 for 37 yards on a 77-yard touchdown drive.

Followed by another touchdown on a wheel route. Granted, one play after Rutgers dropped what should've been a pick-six.

Meanwhile, Miami completes a pass up the seam between three Tarheel defenders, who proceed to crash into each other and turn it into a 51-yard touchdown. So with two minutes left in a half UNC has controlled, it's suddenly 7-6.
