Shootout. Shoot. Out.

45-24 flatters Oklahoma. Longhorns are winning on the lines and the bulk of Sooner offense has been the result of Texas forgetting to cover everybody.

Now watch Texas blow it.

11 minutes into the LSU-Florida game, and Feleipe Franks has his arm set to Random Spray mode. It's as if he decided he wanted to do his best Nick Fitzgerald impression from the second half of the Florida-MSU game last weekend.
   5. Brian C Posted: October 06, 2018 at 04:12 PM (#5761690)
Also, I completely gave up on the Texas-OU game when it was 45-24 and OU was punting. I just now see that I missed a lot.

Yeah, even by Franks standards he's been inaccurate today.

On the other hand, the defense stiffened and the game is still competitive, which seems miraculous after the first two LSU drives.
   7. CFBF Rides The Zombie Ice Dragon Posted: October 06, 2018 at 04:35 PM (#5761696)
LSU is playing easy pitch and catch every time Burrow throws the ball, but they can't consistently run it and UF is getting a ton of pressure. Every pass play is either a 10-yard completion or a sack.

Got a bit of a start hearing the LSU kicker is named "Avery Atkins." UF had a freshman DB with that name in 2005. Got kicked off the team before the 2006 season after a domestic violence charge and died of an overdose in early 2007.
   10. CFBF Rides The Zombie Ice Dragon Posted: October 06, 2018 at 05:31 PM (#5761712)
Well, I had about 30 seconds of optimism about the Florida offense and Franks' development. That was a fun 30 seconds.
   11. Brian C Posted: October 06, 2018 at 05:31 PM (#5761714)
Was just about to post how much better Franks looked as this game has gone on when he throws an unconscionable end zone interception.
   12. Brian C Posted: October 06, 2018 at 05:35 PM (#5761717)
Gary Danielson at his worst:

Goes on and on about how important it was that the Gators end the first half with Franks having restored his confidence. Puffs out his chest about how right he was when Franks completes a big pass to start the half - "see, that's what happens when you have confidence."

Naturally, Franks throws a terrible INT on the next play, so what's an analyst to do now that his hobbyhorse has been put down with a bullet to the head? Why you just incorporate it into the narrative. He shakes his head and says, see, that can happen when you're playing with confidence, you start to get greedy.
   13. CFBF Rides The Zombie Ice Dragon Posted: October 06, 2018 at 06:09 PM (#5761727)
Probably not surprising that LSU-Florida has become a punting contest.
   14. CFBF Rides The Zombie Ice Dragon Posted: October 06, 2018 at 06:41 PM (#5761729)
Man, having a head coach instead of a sentient bucket of kettle corn really makes a difference in playcalling.

Probably not surprising that LSU-Florida has become a punting contest.

Not anymore! Now it's turned into a contest of 6-point touchdowns.

   17. CFBF Rides The Zombie Ice Dragon Posted: October 06, 2018 at 07:01 PM (#5761735)
I have a pretty clear vision of Florida failing to get one more first down, punting the ball away and LSU kicking a field goal as time expires.
   18. Brian C Posted: October 06, 2018 at 07:02 PM (#5761736)
I have a pretty solid vision of that 3rd-and-long handoff being kind of a give-up play call, although maybe it's setting up a super ballsy fake punt.
   19. CFBF Rides The Zombie Ice Dragon Posted: October 06, 2018 at 07:04 PM (#5761737)
Boy, sure looks like LSU shoved a UF receiver after the play without provocation and the refs called offsetting unsportsmanlike conduct penalties in order to avoid giving Florida a first down.
   20. Brian C Posted: October 06, 2018 at 07:06 PM (#5761738)

But thank god an official was there to penalize a college kid for celebrating the biggest play of his life.
   23. stanmvp48 Posted: October 06, 2018 at 07:08 PM (#5761742)
Florida player should not have scored
   24. Brian C Posted: October 06, 2018 at 07:09 PM (#5761743)
Who'd he even penalize? He called #9, which is not Stewart's number. I think he also called #9 for the phantom offsetting unsportsmanlike, too, right?
   25. CFBF Rides The Zombie Ice Dragon Posted: October 06, 2018 at 07:12 PM (#5761745)
#9 is Dre Massey, a wide receiver turned corner. I'm not sure if he was on the field for the interception - he's pretty far down the depth chart. And if he ran on the field to celebrate, OK, that's a penalty. CBS never showed a replay of the celebration.

Rushing three has got to drive Grantham insane.

YES!! Swamp must be rocking right now like it hasn't in years. Wish I could be there.
   29. CFBF Rides The Zombie Ice Dragon Posted: October 06, 2018 at 07:21 PM (#5761750)
I remember thinking back in 2012 that the victory over LSU meant Florida was "back" after the bad 2010 and 2011 seasons. So I don't want to overreact to this. But...

WOO! WE'RE BACK, BABY! GATOR NATION ANNEXES LOUISIANA!
   30. Brian C Posted: October 06, 2018 at 07:38 PM (#5761751)
Looking at the replay, I see that Vosean Joseph punted the ball into the stands after the pick-6, so that was probably the penalty.

I remember that 2015 game against #3 (at the time) Ole Miss feeling like maybe McElwain had things moving in the right direction. So I'm not real worried about whether the Gators are back, I'm just happy they won this one.

What a fun game.
   31. Meatwad Posted: October 06, 2018 at 07:41 PM (#5761752)
IU kept it close for awhile. Shame they are getting blown out now.
   32. Brian White Posted: October 06, 2018 at 10:06 PM (#5761794)
A&M has badly, badly outplayed Kentucky this half. Somehow this game is tied (pending the extra point).

YES!! Swamp must be rocking right now like it hasn't in years.

It absolutely was. What an incredibly fun atmosphere.

In regards to those offsetting unsportsmanlike penalties late in the 4th, it was clear the refs just invented a penalty on Florida. But I understand their reluctance to basically hand Florida the game because a DB kinda slapped a dude in the helmet.

Which I totally understand. But then, just don't make the call in the first place, you know?
   35. CFBF Rides The Zombie Ice Dragon Posted: October 06, 2018 at 10:16 PM (#5761800)
Mond and Wilson seem to be competing to see who can give away the game.

I guess throwing the initial flag was kind of a reflex action. Then the refs got together and thought about it and decided the better of it.

Just pick up a few yards to give yourself a chance on 4th down, I guess.

The punt didn't make it to the first down marker! I love it.

If ND wins out do they make the playsoffs? I think it would be hard to keep them out with oklahoma losing this week.
   41. . . . . . . Posted: October 07, 2018 at 04:42 PM (#5761999)
Probably depends how well Michigan does now that it’s going to play real teams. ND needs that win to be a quality win.
   42. Quaker Posted: October 07, 2018 at 04:58 PM (#5762010)
There's a 100% chance that an undefeated ND team makes the playoff.
   43. Cowboy Popup Posted: October 07, 2018 at 05:43 PM (#5762032)
It is a damn shame WVU @ NC State did not happen this year.
   44. McCoy Posted: October 07, 2018 at 08:31 PM (#5762073)
Georgia has a pretty tough schedule, probably the toughest of undefeated teams. If they win out and so does Alabama then they are the top two. I doubt West Virginia can leap frog ND but I also doubt notre Dame can leap frog Clemson and Ohio State.

Notre Dame should win out but ND routinely fails to do what they should do. I doubt Georgia can win out and probably one more undefeated top four team as well and that should be good enough to get Notre Dame in the top four.
   45. Cowboy Popup Posted: October 07, 2018 at 09:51 PM (#5762106)
I would be surprised if any team other than Bama and Notre Dame win out.

Clemson has NC State, a tricky Gamecock squad and probably Miami in the ACC Championship game. That's a lot to get through given how they've played quality competition. The rest of the ACC is so bad though.

This feels like its gonna be a very boring playoff group this year, with ND being the "fresh" blood.
   46. Man o' Schwar Posted: October 07, 2018 at 09:54 PM (#5762109)

Absolutely. There's no way the TV folks and the NCAA would pass up any chance to stick Notre Dame in the playoff, qualified or not.

I went to the RRS yesterday, my second in attendance. It remains one of my favorite sporting events to attend. All the way around, a must experience weekend. I hear they are going to further extend its playing at the Cotton Bowl (locked up through 2025 at the moment). I hope they do, that game would lose so much of its soul if played at JerryWorld. I'm told the schools would take the game to Austin/Norman if the Cotton Bowl wasn't the host.

I see Mike Stoops i out as DC. As we exited the Cotton Bowl, the assistant coaches on both sides were hustling past the exiting crowd towards the locker room behind the tunnel, Stoops looked like a sweaty mess riding in a golf cart, with the look of a guy that knew it was over.
   48. AuntBea calls himself Sky Panther Posted: October 08, 2018 at 12:27 AM (#5762208)
FPI's win out percentages has Clemson most likely (46.5%), followed by Notre Dame and Ohio State (both at 37.6%) and then Alabama (35.3%). UCF and Georgia are way back at 15.9% and 15.6%. Cincinnati is at 2.7%, and West Virginia at 1.9%. NC State at 0.9%, USF at 0.3%, and Colorado at 0.0% (probably means less than 1 in 2000, after rounding!) Pretty sure their win out percentages require winning the conference championship (if there is one, of course).

That's 4 teams with a decent chance at being undefeated, which seems high at this point of the year. Most likely only 1 will get there.

By boring, I assume you mean we will get all 3 of Alabama, Ohio State and Clemson? Could certainly be, but I wouldn't count on it. Something could always happen along the way. And often does.

edit: for example, FPI has percentages of each winning their conference championship as Clemson: 76.1%; Ohio State: 62.7%, Alabama: 61.3%. Now obviously any of these three doesn't necessarily have to win their conference to get into the playoff, but losing would make them somewhat of a longshot. And the FPI odds of all 3 winning is only 29%.

While I can certainly see a the loser of the SEC championship getting a bid to the final four, the 'Dawgs and Tide can't both "win out."

...

John Gagliardi, who won almost 500 games and four national championships coaching at DIII St. Johns passed away this weekend. While I'm a fan of Alabama, I really love small time college ball more than the pro atmosphere in Tuscaloosa, Columbus, Athens, etc.
   50. Cowboy Popup Posted: October 08, 2018 at 10:19 AM (#5762271)
FPI's win out percentages has Clemson most likely (46.5%)

I have to assume that is due, in part, to the fact that the ACC is paper thin. Not that Clemson isn't really good but they are not going to be challenged most weeks.

Yup and sure. Never know when things will change dramatically. It's easy to envision scenarios where either O$U or Clemson mess up and lose a game. But even then, the playoff has given them a lot of margin to lose once and there are not a host of viable other undefeated or one loss contenders waiting in the wings.

I meant before the SEC championship. I think if Alabama and Georgia both win out and then Georgia loses the Championship I don't think you can make a strong case for knocking them out of the top four. Not with the schedule they played.

Depends, right? Of course this will never happen, but if ND is undefeated along with 3 other Power 5 undefeated teams (say, Bama/OSU/Clemson) , Georgia will not (and should not) go to the playoff.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9TEuvRXfYKw

Last year, Louisiana Tech had a 3rd and goal from their own 7. Set up by an 87 yard loss on the previous play.

If the Packers were defending it they would have converted it.
   57. . . . . . . Posted: October 08, 2018 at 01:42 PM (#5762438)
Man, Michigan's schedule this year: home against FPI #5 and 11, away against FPI #2 and 8. And if Michigan somehow survived that with 1 loss, they'd get a neutral site game against FPI #11 followed by the playoff. Unfuckinwinnable.
   58. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: October 08, 2018 at 02:06 PM (#5762460)
I recall Miami completing a 3rd and 43 against Notre Dame from inside their own 10 in 1989. Erickson over the top to Randall Hill, who of course taunted up a storm as only he could do.

FPI gives them a 5% chance to win out from here on out (prior to the playoff), that is nigh unwinnable.

Not anguished, just annoyed. I figure the defense will get things under control and pretty used to Franks being awful early in games.

I'm not guaranteeing a win for the Gators or anything, but I expect things not to be so stupid for the rest of the game.

The "quarterback decides to slide late putting his own head in the line of fire of a defender who'd been intending to hit him in the midsection" variety is amongst the most infuriating targeting calls.

By all means, throw the book at Chuck Cecil kill shots on receivers and the like, but you can't be throwing players out of games for unintended contact to the head, particularly when it's caused by the offensive player's actions.
   69. Brian C Posted: October 13, 2018 at 01:13 PM (#5765624)
I guess I was wrong and this game's getting even stupider.
   70. CFBF Rides The Zombie Ice Dragon Posted: October 13, 2018 at 01:15 PM (#5765625)
Florida's moving the ball reasonably well, but literally every time they have something going they commit a turnover or a dumb penalty.

And the defense...oy. Getting boat raced by Vanderbilt's offense is not a good look.
   71. CFBF Rides The Zombie Ice Dragon Posted: October 13, 2018 at 01:18 PM (#5765627)
I will say that the Franks fumble took one of the weirdest bounces I've ever seen from a fumbled football. I have no idea how that ball didn't skip out of bounds.

Of course, Vandy should have corralled it, like, 30 yards earlier, so it's hard to complain.
   72. Cowboy Popup Posted: October 13, 2018 at 01:22 PM (#5765629)
That fumble was AMAZING. Really don't know how it didn't go out of bounds.

I think that's a TD.
   74. Brian C Posted: October 13, 2018 at 01:28 PM (#5765632)
I would have liked to see what Mullen had up his sleeve for a 3rd-and-50.

The only consolation here is that this game really ought to be closer than 21-10. Gators just gotta manage to stop tripping over their own clown shoes.
   75. CFBF Rides The Zombie Ice Dragon Posted: October 13, 2018 at 01:29 PM (#5765633)
Looks like the replay booth got that right, but man, you have to send that call down earlier. That was way too late - like an ump calling time a split-second before a pitcher starts his delivery.

   80. Cowboy Popup Posted: October 13, 2018 at 01:37 PM (#5765639)
Wow, the refs do not like Florida today.

I also have Mason in a coach fight. After seeing Mullen dance, I doubt he has enough coordination to make up for the lack of bulk. Did he used to play?
   81. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 13, 2018 at 01:40 PM (#5765641)
What a screwup by Vanderbilt.
   82. Brian C Posted: October 13, 2018 at 01:42 PM (#5765642)
So it was just explained by the broadcasters that:

1) Vosean Joseph had an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty earlier in the game
2) The Gators were called for a team unsportsmanlike penalty
3) Therefore, Joseph gets ejected because it's his second unsportsmanlike penalty?

That can't possibly be right, can it? I mean, I know the NCAA has some supremely stupid rules, but that just sounds impossibly stupid.

On the other hand, Joseph probably should have been ejected for his earlier penalty. But still, he wasn't.

I just don't understand what happened. I actually suspect that explanation is an accurate account of what happened. But it still can't possibly be right. Either Joseph was called for something that wasn't announced or the refs messed it up big time.

What gives me pause is that Grantham was the one shouting at Mason, and Grantham is the guy who made a choking gesture at UF's kicker* in overtime when he was UGA's defensive coordinator in 2010. I can definitely believe that he was being a dick and instigated the whole thing.

*Well, punter acting as a kicker.

Time for Mullen to realize that the Gators aren't having a lot of success running to the outside.

Boooooo! Go for it.

A deserved miss.

There's a break.

"Ryley" is not an acceptable spelling of that name, either.

Why why why ... two more runs outside for basically nothing. Just ####### stop it.

Gators are going to need to be able to throw downfield at some point in this game. I think Vandy's caught on to the short stuff.

Also Franks sucks.

EDIT: Perfectly executed fake punts work too, I guess.

Hey look, a downfield pass* results in a long TD. Who'd have thought?

* - OK, just a slant but still

That pass to Stephens is the sort that makes scouts and coaches drool.

Minnesota would be in a considerably better position if not for Ohio State's seven phantom points after a failed fourth down.

Good grief, Swain.

The Gators having the lead right now feels like going outside right after a storm, and the air is unstable enough that it's hard to tell if it's passed or if there's another storm right behind it.

Like I was saying...

Pierce is probably benched for the rest of the day, and that's understandable, but that's one of those fumbles where I don't think he really did anything wrong, per se. Got slung back, happened to go over a Vanderbilt player instead of on the ground and the ball was flung out.
