Minnesota can move the ball, but it turns it over too much. Particularly Annexstad, who's become an interception machine of late.

Perine is just a really good college back. That's definitely a bit of a back-handed compliment, but he just does everything pretty well. If this was NCAA Football all of his attributes would be between 80 and 85.

Breathing room! Still doesn't feel over, but also the defense has stabilized so I feel cautiously OK.

In other news, Tennessee is up 13 over Auburn, and I fear massive loss of life as the rush by Auburn fans to get out on the ledge runs full speed into the rush of Tennessee fans retreating from it.
   104. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 13, 2018 at 03:09 PM (#5765689)
Two missed field goals also haven't helped.

I think Chauncey just targeted that football out of the receiver's hands.

Nebraska in danger of turtling away its first win.

And naturally the Vanderbilt kicker who missed from 22 hits from 52.
   108. Brian C Posted: October 13, 2018 at 03:37 PM (#5765699)
Well, that was a game, all right. 34-6 once the Gators woke up.
   109. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 13, 2018 at 03:53 PM (#5765702)
So Nebraska had the ball with a 31-24 lead and ~2:20 left after recovering an onside kick, and Frost decided to run into the line three times in service of burning Northwestern's timeouts. After that 15-second drive, a punt pinned Northwestern at the one, immediately undone by a roughing penalty in the end zone. Still, Northwestern was wasting a lot of time and was only to its 36 with about 45 seconds left before hitting consecutive passes for 32 and 27 to set up a five-yard touchdown to force overtime.

Nebraska had 4th-and-inches on the first possession, and a wild shotgun snap resulted in a desperate heave being intercepted the end zone allowing Northwestern to win it with a field goal on the second possession.

Sheesh, Holyfield's kid is a beast.

Of course, so are Georgia's other backs.

I'm sorry, Texas is ranked 9th? What?
   112. Brian C Posted: October 13, 2018 at 04:06 PM (#5765707)
#109 - vintage Northwestern. I don't know if there's another team in the country who's as exciting to watch, week after week, no matter who they're playing, whether a top-10 team or an FCS team. 12 heart attack games a year, those guys. And it's been that way just about every week for them for years.
   113. Cowboy Popup Posted: October 13, 2018 at 04:08 PM (#5765708)
LSU sniffs out the fake field goal. Sweet!
   114. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 13, 2018 at 04:21 PM (#5765714)
That was a touchdown, but they're not gonna overturn it.
   115. McCoy Posted: October 13, 2018 at 04:36 PM (#5765718)
As usual it looks like notre Dame is going to choke their national championship hopes away.
   116. Cowboy Popup Posted: October 13, 2018 at 04:44 PM (#5765719)
What's really weird is how folks just assumed they would choke against Pitt because that is what Pitt is known for.

Other than eating ####.
   117. McCoy Posted: October 13, 2018 at 04:47 PM (#5765721)
Well, Notre Dame is also known to choke against teams like Pitt. At least it isn't Boston college this time around.
   118. Cowboy Popup Posted: October 13, 2018 at 04:51 PM (#5765722)
Two generous spots in a row for LSU give them a first down. It's not right but whatever, I sure don't want Georgia to win.
   119. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 13, 2018 at 05:04 PM (#5765727)
Central Florida's woeful defense biting it against Memphis. 339 yards and 30 points in the first half.
   120. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 13, 2018 at 05:24 PM (#5765735)
Notre Dame getting a questionable pass interference call while trailing Pitt late? Why, I never...

Narduzzi going Full Hatter, calling a fake when the opposition has kept its defense on the field in anticipation of the fake.
   122. Cowboy Popup Posted: October 13, 2018 at 05:39 PM (#5765746)
Wtf with these insane 4th down calls in the ND game???
   123. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 13, 2018 at 05:58 PM (#5765750)
That was an incredible interception. 80% of the ball hanging out of his hands and somehow kept the back end from touching the grass.
   124. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 13, 2018 at 06:15 PM (#5765754)
Torrential downpour in Memphis as Milton does an Elway whirlybird into the end zone for a 31-30 lead with 12:14 left.
   125. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 13, 2018 at 06:45 PM (#5765775)
UCF picks up a fourth down at its own 40 with three minutes left, clinging to a 31-30 lead. Memphis down to one timeout.
   126. Mike A Posted: October 13, 2018 at 06:59 PM (#5765790)
UCF got away with a lot of pass interference on Memphis's last drive. But Memphis's clock management was pretty incompetent.

Part of me wants UCF to win out, play Alabama, lose by 78, and have to retroactively take down their 'Championship' banner from last year. Is that so wrong?
   127. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 13, 2018 at 07:01 PM (#5765795)
UCF finished first in one of the NCAA's sanctioned ratings, so it's not merely a "claimed" championship.
   128. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 13, 2018 at 07:03 PM (#5765797)
Washington may come to regret settling for a 37-yard kick when there was plenty of time to get closer.
   129. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 13, 2018 at 07:04 PM (#5765798)
College kickers suck.
   130. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 13, 2018 at 07:09 PM (#5765800)
Michigan State punted trailing by three with under two minutes left. And it ends up working out better than could be imagined when McSorley goes out of bounds on third down, saving Sparty's last timeout.
   131. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: October 13, 2018 at 07:12 PM (#5765802)
Wildcat and fade by Washington to piss away 2nd-and-goal from the three. The playcalling on the goal line continues to be trash.

I guess, though if we go by the UCF #1 Colley-Matrix Poll... Alabama can claim the 2016 title, Notre Dame can claim 2012, and Oklahoma State can claim 2011. They all also finished first in the Colley-Matrix poll. I think you're starting to get a little complex...if you look at all the polls, you've got 20 NCAA Champions in the past 10 years. But wait a minute....

I see FSU can claim the 1996 title with Florida, thanks to the famed Alderson System (I believe that's where Princess Leia was from)! So we'll be sharing that one, my Gator brethren.

Seriously, to be fair, UCF's title claim is more legit than some of 'Bama's. But I just can't buy it. That's why I want them to get into the playoffs this year. I want to see what happens. Maybe they'd surprise me, you never know.

I have no illusions that the 2018 team could put up much of a fight. 2017 was a weak year at the top, and UCF is down a coach and the two best players off a defense that wasn't great to begin with.

This is the game you always know is coming as a WVU fan.

Only 7 passes by Rutgers QBs were caught today in a 34-7 loss to Maryland.

that sounds bad, but it gets worse once you know that 5 of them were caught by Terrapins and only 2 by Scarlet Knights.

Rutgers is...... well, they are not good.

"vintage Northwestern. I don't know if there's another team in the country who's as exciting to watch, week after week, no matter who they're playing, whether a top-10 team or an FCS team. 12 heart attack games a year, those guys. And it's been that way just about every week for them for years."

I agree with that comment - and if they can manage a white-knuckler against 1-6 Rutgers next weekend......

Rutgers' only win was in their opener against Texas State (yes, really). Kathy Ireland is that team's kicker (well, not really. but she was the Texas State kicker in the 1991 movie Unnecessary Roughness).

Punting from the 42 when you're down 21-7 with 17 minutes to play is not something you do when you're interested in winning.

The only way West Virginia crapping its pants like this becomes acceptable is if it's the beginning of an entertaining collapse to be known as Geno Smith Redux.

heh

I stumbled across the Rutgers game on radio today, as happens when running weekend errands.

an angrier radio crew you will never hear. one is former non-entity NFL QB Ray Lucas, who twice called an official a "coward" for calling a late hit and then an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the hapless Rutgers coach - so 30 yards of penalties.

at one point, Lucas griped about the spotting of the ball after a modest Northwestern gain - he said it was off "by three yards." hmm, didn't see the play, but I'll go with "no" on that observation.
   149. Howie Menckel Posted: October 20, 2018 at 03:28 PM (#5771743)
huh, Rutgers not getting a single first down in the final 25 minutes of the game did NOT pay off.

Northwestern went for it on 4th and 4 from the Rutgers 15 midway thru the 4th quarter, converted, then a TD a 2-point conversion for an 18-15 lead - and an 18-15 final.

The Cats lead a charmed, and decidedly uncharmed life.

They’re the stalking horse, the parity princes.

I’m just glad all the ridiculousness of “maybe it’s time for Pat to go” goes back where it belongs.

I wouldn’t be shocked to see ND lose a 3rd straight to them.

Meyer enabled a sociopath who became a murderer. Harbaugh is annoying. It’s exactly the same.

for clarity's sake: hernandez was a murderer before he played for urban meyer. meyer's "fixer" at UF shielded hernandez from a murder investigation when hernandez was still in high school. that fixer was also the grandfather of the wifebeating WR coach that meyer still sticks up for, to this day.

Cats hanging tough against the Badgers...

Vintage NW game so far ... play tough against a higher-ranked opponent, and make enough mistakes to keep it close.
I'd like to express my annoyance at FSU becoming respectable this year.

Not sure I buy it. The ACC is really terrible.

Here's a fun fact: the ACC is 3-9 in out-of-conference games against Power 5 opponents (including Notre Dame) this year, and two of those three wins were by Duke. And that's not even counting VT's loss to Old Dominion or UNC's loss to East Carolina. Clemson's close win over Texas A&M is the only other win.

For reference:

Big XII: 4-6
B1G: 7-6
Pac 12: 3-5
SEC: 6-3
AAC: 7-10
MW: 4-12

Clemson's offense had basically one positive play -- the long catch-and-run that set up the field goal attempt -- in the first quarter-plus. And since the Roughing the Kicker set up the first touchdown, it's been boom-boom-boom down the field.

Definitely a new era in high school sports. The local high school for me has a junior QB that has or is going to own every single school and county QB record (set by former NFL QB and GA great Eric Zeier and LSU/LA QB Anthony Jennings). He is also likely to be the 5th Georgia high schooler to pass for more than 10,000 yards in his high school career. The other 4 are Trevor Lawrence, Jake Fromm, Deshaun Watson, and K'hari Lane. All players who were high schoolers within the last 5 years. Also pretty good club to be in with only Lane being the unheralded one.

FSU has two probable losses (ND and Florida) left on the schedule, plus very loseable games against NCSU and BC. 6-6 is their best likely outcome, but I'd love for it to be 5-7 and presumably no bowl game. Dare we dream of 4-8?

The best team they've beaten is either Northern Illinois or Wake Forest, and they got clocked in three of their four losses.

Playing the Tomahawk Chop when you're down 52-3 in the fourth quarter is pretty sad, FSU.
The band has to have something to do during this debacle. I mean, I guess they could play Taps instead, but that probably wouldn't go over well.

Jimbo left us with little, he took the money and ran. Taggart is in over his head. This isn't good.

As awful as Franks has been early in games, I don't know whether to applaud or condemn the flea flicker to open the game. Of course he missed an easy TD deep.

That fumble hurt.

On the plus side, Florida's actually moving the ball pretty well on Georgia's defense.

On the minus side, everything else about this game.

Ugh, Franks. Terrible INT. This was always the worst-case scenario for this game, that he'd play the Gators out of the game early.

Iowa sends out the field goal team from the 10, but then lines up to go for it with the punter at quarterback -- this is after having done the same thing on a previous attempt from inside the five, only to get a delay penalty after aborting and having to kicker run back in position to kick too late -- and ends up throwing a touchdown to a defensive lineman lined up at tight end. A nice over-the-shoulder catch as he took a hit.

I mean, I get that Georgia wants to "establish the run" and all that, but UF's two best corners are out of the game. I think you air it out until Trey Dean and C.J. McWilliams prove they can cover.

Florida's pass rushers are legit, to be sure, but I think you can slant and hitch them to death.

Not that it isn't incredibly dumb to announce your intention to run a quasi-fake before doing it, taking away the element of surprise that is a critical element of a fake.

I never really got why Fromm ended up getting the permanent job.

Eason began 2017 as the starter, meaning he was presumably viewed as the superior option at that point. And Fromm was treated as a pure game manager at the point of development that Eason had been allowed to sling the ball all over. So I never understood why Eason didn't get the job back when he was healthy, and I don't understand why Fromm, after being anointed, is still generally treated like a game manager.

Advantage Washington, I guess.

Florida has a starting safety named Jeawon Taylor and a starting right tackle named Jawaan Taylor. Not to be out done, Georgia has a linebacker named Juwan Taylor.

Iowa leads 14-7 -- on two safeties, a field goal and the aforementioned trickeratious touchdown.

Iowa wasted the greatest play fake in history. 3rd-and-1, heavy package, Penn State completely sells out to stop the run as Stanley turns his back to the defense, tight end sneaks out and is literally 20 yards behind every defender, but Stanley overthrows him.

Georgia's probably going to the half with a timeout in its pocket. One that should've been used after the third completion to Nauta.

If McWilliams hadn't made a nice play in the end zone that would have been arguably the worst end-of-half defense in the history of college football.
