"A nice place to visit, a great place to live", IIRC!

It's actually changed quite a bit -- there's an Irish pub right by that railway bridge that's honestly pretty darn good, with an exceptional beer list (and I say this is as a Chicago bar snob) and even a couple of restaurants in town that are really good... It's all cosmopolitan now!

This is my first time really watching Oregon this year and holy smokes! They are unreal. ASU isn't great shakes or anything, but with a performance like this, it doesn't really matter.

I want to see this team play Bama in the MNC game. I'll be shocked if anyone in the PAC-12 can beat them, so I'll probably get my wish.
   1104. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: October 18, 2012 at 11:21 PM (#4276302)
ASU took quite a dump in that 2nd quarter.

I'm hoping A&M plays better on Saturday, though I can see the bad side of Manziel showing himself in that game.

Am I crazy for thinking they can win that game? LSU on the road seems fairly vulnerable.
   1106. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: October 19, 2012 at 12:07 AM (#4276331)
A&M can win, but they are still starting a Fr. QB, who is obviously playing well, but LSU has a lot of talent to make people look bad. Also, A&M has had a hard time getting that big win of late, sans a couple UT upsets (rivalry game).
   1107. Barry`s_Lazy_Boy Posted: October 19, 2012 at 10:39 AM (#4276521)
A&M can definitely win. LSU only a -160 favorite.

This is weird...

Vanderbilt just dropped out of its two remaining games with Northwestern -- backing out of next season's 2013 and the following 2014 game. Apparently, they did it very rudely.

SEC chickens!
   1109. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: October 19, 2012 at 03:46 PM (#4276771)
Vandy sent a letter via US Mail is what I had heard. Largely done as league is moving to 9 game conference schedule. That's too bad.

Minnesota just scrapped a series with UNC too. Boo.

Meanwhile a bomb threat in College Station, TX, caused campus to evacuate this afternoon.

I thought the playoffs were supposed to encourage tougher OOC schedules, but I guess that doesn't really work if a team has no national title aspirations.
   1111. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: October 19, 2012 at 04:32 PM (#4276818)
UW and Maryland signed up to play H/H in a few years.

It doesn't work even if the team has title aspirations. The voters still (and I don't see this changing as long as any response to a funny result is "blame the computers!") order teams by fewest losses and the tiebreaker is who they had ranked higher in the preseason or who lost more recently (neither of which, obviously, have anything to do with SoS). If Oregon wins out, neither ND nor K St (who both will have played tougher schedules) will have much of a chance to get to that coveted #2. Now, I know they get in the four team playoff, but what happens with two undefeateds and four one-loss teams? We have the exact same problem.

And tell Michigan, whose only two losses came to top five teams out of conference and aren't in the top 25 of the BCS, that scheduling up will be properly rewarded when they see four undefeated teams sitting between 12 and 21, whose combined best win is at home to a garbage Tennessee team.

No kidding. Great point.
   1114. Barry`s_Lazy_Boy Posted: October 19, 2012 at 05:14 PM (#4276849)
To me, you still want a weak OOC schedule and hope you go undefeated. 11-1 or 10-2 with "good losses" makes you hope you get lucky.

I'm inclined to agree with you, but shouldn't we at least hold out hope that the playoff selection crew will be a bit more sophisticated in their analysis? You know, it's sad, but just writing that made me feel foolish. I really hope it's not a Harris Poll redux, but the odds of that not happening are so incredibly long.

What's interesting about the Tennessee phenomenon is that most writers are happy to talk out of both sides of their mouths. Dooley is going to get fired because he is like 0 for a million against ranked teams and doesn't pull away from Akron until the 4th quarter. But then Miss. St. or Bama faces a test when they play the exact same Tennessee. Miss St. and Bama will get their tests, there's no need to prop them up on a mid-tier ACC caliber team with a prestigious name on the jersey.

I guess it comes down to how much the selection committee uses the polls. I hope they ignore them completely, but as you said, fat chance. The common man places too much emphasis on where his team sits, and just ignores how the sausage is made.

Who's ready for Cuse-UConn?!?! Wow, even I'm not. Even Rod Gilmore can't make this game exciting. Man, the bottom of the Big East is bad.
   1119. Cowboy Popup Posted: October 20, 2012 at 12:14 PM (#4277399)
A&M off to a good start, and then clanks the extra point.
   1120. Every Inge Counts Posted: October 20, 2012 at 12:52 PM (#4277423)
LSU did not get the memo about the 11 kickoff apparently.

LSU has stunk on the road as well. They need a game changing play soon.
   1121. Cowboy Popup Posted: October 20, 2012 at 01:21 PM (#4277446)
12-0. We're approaching a score that LSU probably can't make up in the second half, at least on the road. Of course, A&M is notorious for second half meltdowns.
1122. odds are meatwad is drunk Posted: October 20, 2012 at 01:43 PM (#4277470)
well Mississippi State's run at a decent season will end next week when they finally play a good team. and have a streach of 3 in a row that are good. this week they play middle Tennessee state
   1123. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: October 20, 2012 at 01:54 PM (#4277478)
A&M (and me) wondering how they are trailing at half.

as noted, they usually tank in the 2nd half.
   1124. Every Inge Counts Posted: October 20, 2012 at 03:08 PM (#4277512)
Braxton Miller apparently took a huge hit in the Purdue game, probably out for the rest of the game.

Woo! What a second half for Rutgers
   1126. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: October 20, 2012 at 03:15 PM (#4277516)
I dont think Cuse is that bad. They were competitive in a tough ooc slate and clearly are better than the be bottom feeders

DOWN GOES OSU

Johnny Manziel just came within inches of throwing a red zone interception with his left hand.

There's much of Jake Plummer in this one.

1130. CFBF Is A Golden Spider Duck Posted: October 20, 2012 at 03:46 PM (#4277532)
I turned Purdue-OSU off after Guyton threw the interception and pretty much forgot about it. Turned to ABC to see a bit of Northwestern and Purdue throws an incomplete pass in OT to lose the game? The hell?
   1131. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: October 20, 2012 at 03:51 PM (#4277534)
Purdue wasn't very proficient in killing clock or moving sticks. Then they allow tOSU to march very quickly, mostly on one play down the field with under 45 seconds. Throw in a PI in the end zone, and tOSU scores on a near trap in reg, gets the 2pt conversion and it was over, even before OT.
   1132. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: October 20, 2012 at 03:57 PM (#4277538)
Baptiste should be cut (I must have typed this five times in two years) his bone headed plays on special teams have cost Nebraska dearly in his short career.

edit: nevermind, dumb penalty on Stafford, I assumed Baptiste. I'm watching him nonetheless.

You know how some RPGs like Fallout make "luck" a character trait? I sometimes feel like Urban Meyer put all his experience points into that particular trait.

UF trying to take care of Clowney, and it cost them six.

If you tell me right now that the final score of this game will be 7-3 I wouldn't exactly be shocked.
   1139. Every Inge Counts Posted: October 20, 2012 at 04:26 PM (#4277554)
So does Auburn fire Chizik or what? They might go 3-9 this year and it isn't exactly like they have an extra Cam Newton lying around....
   1140. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: October 20, 2012 at 04:27 PM (#4277555)
If you could guarantee no more turnovers inside own territory, I'd might agree.
   1141. zonk Posted: October 20, 2012 at 04:28 PM (#4277557)
Northwestern has decided that their best offensive weapon is the punter booting a knuckleball.

Florida with its first first down. With 5:02 left. In the second quarter.
1146. CFBF Is A Golden Spider Duck Posted: October 20, 2012 at 04:46 PM (#4277568)
Tulo's caveat in 1140 proves eerily prescient.
1147. CFBF Is A Golden Spider Duck Posted: October 20, 2012 at 05:12 PM (#4277585)
It's like UF's players know when they're going to make a big play and deliberately commit a penalty to negate it.

Venric Mark!
   1149. hokieneer Posted: October 20, 2012 at 06:05 PM (#4277616)
Florida and Alabama are going to go undefeated. One will fall in the SEC championship game, but we'll get the rematch in the BCS championship game. SEC baby.
1150. CFBF Is A Golden Spider Duck Posted: October 20, 2012 at 06:13 PM (#4277625)
I have a real hard time imagining that anyone's going to vote a one-loss Florida team into the title game over an undefeated Oregon or K-State squad.

Now, if there are no other undefeated teams, and if Florida gives 'Bama a good fight in the title game...nah. I still don't see it happening.
   1151. Every Inge Counts Posted: October 20, 2012 at 06:14 PM (#4277627)
Florida might only have to leave their state for the SEC championship game....
   1152. hokieneer Posted: October 20, 2012 at 06:33 PM (#4277633)
Feeling confident about tonight. Bailey is on the field and looks fine in pregame warm ups.

KSU plays mostly 4 deep and sometimes rolls down into a 3 deep. I think Dana/Geno learned from their panic last week and forcing the ball into the wind and into blanket coverage deep. WVU comes out, controls the intermediate routes and middle of the field with Austin, and has great success moving the ball between the 20s on KSU. Hopefully they will continue to have success in the red zone. KSU is giving up over 6.5 yards per attempt and has only faced one real good passing team (OU). KSU is not built to take advantage of WVU's weaknesses on defense like Baylor/TTU was. Hopefully Clarke returns to the D-line this game and I think WVU will have enough in the front 7(8) to contain KSU's rushing attack. Throw in night game in Morgantown, after the embarrassment last week (WVU likes to play really down at least once a year), I think WVU comes out on all cylinders and wins this game by 2 scores. 45-33 WVU.

I'm pretty sure Bo Pelini is the angriest man on the planet about now.
1154. CFBF Is A Golden Spider Duck Posted: October 20, 2012 at 07:01 PM (#4277640)
Pre-emptive Cocktail Party ########:

I find it annoying that Georgia managed to avoid Alabama, LSU, Mississipi State and Texas A&M from the West.
   1155. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: October 20, 2012 at 08:05 PM (#4277667)
Pelini, while angry nearly all the time, still has some serious heat. The fish bowl in Lincoln is still swarming on him. He is very fortunate, and even still this season is going to really weigh on him big time. T Mart played really well late tonight, the first time he's really stepped up on the road in a tough 2nd half spot in his career. I was very impressed with him, as Northwestern was able to apply a fiar amount of heat in the 1st half and into the 2nd.

Collin Klein ladies and gentlemen. Man I love the QBs the Big XII has put on the field the past decade or so, lots of very dynamic players.

1163. CFBF Is A Golden Spider Duck Posted: October 20, 2012 at 08:19 PM (#4277684)
The FOX color guy just said, "West Virginia's corners are playing with a decided lack of confidence right now." If that's true then it certainly seems like they have a pretty decent sense of their own abilities, at least.
   1164. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: October 20, 2012 at 08:23 PM (#4277687)
Klein is a bad ass, but I wish he would've lowered his shoulder there.
   1165. Every Inge Counts Posted: October 20, 2012 at 08:48 PM (#4277696)
What happened to West Virginia's offense?
   1166. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: October 20, 2012 at 08:50 PM (#4277697)
so a fan ran on the field in the middle of a FSU offensive play at Miami, the fan clearly distracted players on both sides. either way, FSU looks like ass early.
   1167. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: October 20, 2012 at 08:53 PM (#4277698)
a Geno Smith INT, a Geno Smith INT. Bad to worse (and I have nothing against the kid or WVA, even if I am rooting hard for KSU this season).
   1168. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: October 20, 2012 at 08:55 PM (#4277699)
flipside, how did that Klein pass get caught for a TD? It should've been batted, or picked, or PI, or something else. Gus said "fit it into a shoebox" great line.
   1169. hokieneer Posted: October 20, 2012 at 09:02 PM (#4277702)
I apologize for anyone that has to watch wvu play pass defense. They are an embarrassment to the game.

Of course the offense hasnt looked good the last 6 quarters either.

I knew this team was overrated being ranked #5, but #### they look like the worse team in the nation. They collectively have given up in consecutive weeks.
   1170. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: October 20, 2012 at 09:10 PM (#4277703)
Tennessee, while not on the verge, is certainly in this game a bit w Bama.

I dont' disagree, but if Bama's got a weakness, it is their inability to simply score points (though to be fair, the MO is to certainly limit mistakes and not take a lot of chances, as the D is there to kick your ass).
1173. CFBF Is A Golden Spider Duck Posted: October 20, 2012 at 09:16 PM (#4277706)
Duke's stadium looks like a high school field. I actually wouldn't be surprised if there were some high schools in Texas with more impressive stadiums.

   1175. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: October 20, 2012 at 09:18 PM (#4277708)
I've seen Duke's stadium, it is dug into the ground, adjacent to Cameron Indoor, it is underwhelming. Nevertheless, love Cutcliffe, glad he's got Duke going. win here and they will make a bowl for first time since '94.
   1176. Every Inge Counts Posted: October 20, 2012 at 09:23 PM (#4277710)

I can see that. Part of it is their ball-control offense. But this is Alabama's best offense probably in the Saban era.
   1177. Every Inge Counts Posted: October 20, 2012 at 09:48 PM (#4277720)
And Alabama has put up 44 points now. And they had a TD called back on an illegal formation.

me thinks kids are done w Dooley. I now Bama's got something to do with it, but if Dooley saves his job, his kids will save it for him by how they finish the season.
   1180. Every Inge Counts Posted: October 20, 2012 at 10:00 PM (#4277728)
By the way the most points a Nick Saban coached Alabama team has allowed to Tennessee is 10....
   1181. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: October 20, 2012 at 10:05 PM (#4277731)
not true, I was at the '07 game at Bama, Tennessee scored 17 that day, of course Bama scored 41. (I'm embarrassed that I'm here defending poor ole Tennessee).
   1182. Every Inge Counts Posted: October 20, 2012 at 10:10 PM (#4277733)
Yeah for some reason I was thinking 2007 was a Shula year. Of course, that was when DJ Hall killed Tennessee.

Well Alabama passed their first test, now onto to Mississippi State who I think will give Bama a much bigger game.
   1183. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: October 20, 2012 at 10:13 PM (#4277734)
if I recall, Bama followed up that win over Tenn with a home loss to ULM a few weeks later. they lost a few to end the year if I recall.
   1184. hokieneer Posted: October 20, 2012 at 10:16 PM (#4277735)
2nd worse lost in mountaineer field history, I think. The vinny testaverde Miami team won 58-14 years ago.

Last week was the worst loss in a decade. Two historically bad losses in a row. I guess we won't have to worry about holgerson leaving anytime soon.

Duke looks set to blow another bowl-clinching lead.

if I recall, Bama followed up that win over Tenn with a home loss to ULM a few weeks later. they lost a few to end the year if I recall.

Yeah they lose a heartbreaker to LSU the next game I think and then fell apart losing to a bad Mississippi State team and ULM.

Horrible. they even choked away a gift when UNC fumbled the big gain, and still couldn't find the ball. TD UnC. Now Duke in big trouble, though out to midfield.

Am i missing something? Why is this a rush the field kinf of victory? Yay 3-1 in tge conference and we beat an unranked team?

I knew this team was overrated being ranked #5, but #### they look like the worse team in the nation. They collectively have given up in consecutive weeks.

The young guys aren't getting better, the old guys are getting worse. There was a shot of Geno trying to rally the guys when they were down, 24-7 maybe, and everyone just put their head down and walked away. I don't know what has happened to this team, but their confidence is shot. They are not the same team we saw in the first 5 weeks of the season. What a humiliation tonight. I am totally dejected, I at least expected a real effort tonight. Holgorsen has a real problem on his hands and the team has lost everything they gained over the last year in two weeks.

My two sports teams are now 0-6 over the last week. This has been an historically bad stretch for me in sports. Hurray!

K-State is for real though, I don't know who is going to beat them this year.

If you are talking about the Duke game, they just be a rival to become bowl eligible for the first time since like 1994. That's probably rush the field worthy.

So I think, at best, WVU finishes with 8 wins, and is probably going to finish with 7 (probably going to lose to OU and TCU, likely better than Ok. St and Iowa St, but plays both on the road so will probably lose once, and will probably beat Kansas). That's going to be a pretty epic collapse. Whoopee!

This time two weeks ago, WVU just best UT in Austin and the Reds were up 2-0 and coming home. Right there with ya. It's a good thing my NFL team is 1-5!

Yeah, Duke rushing the field is more than acceptable, first off it was barely a rush, with 8000 students, not much of a rush, considering half were there. 2nd, 18 years, and first win over big rival in 10 years, and only 2nd win over UNC since 88.

When has Utah looked good this year? Maybe the weirdo BYU game/ending. they are better than CU at least. Wash getting whooped here at AZ.

Canes running out of gas here vs FSU.

this is a huge win for duke - rushing the field is both warranted and expected

will probably beat Kansas

I get that you're down on West Virginia right now, but trust me, there's no "probably" about this. Kansas might well be the worst BCS team in the country, and the only reason I say "might" is because Colorado exists. If Geno ends that game with fewer than 450 passing yards it'll be an extraordinary accomplishment for the Jayhawks.
