Just please, anything but a shootout.

Be nice if they'd stop letting Spooner walk them every time she touches the puck.

OH COME ON, THAT'S A BS CALL.

What an absurd makeup call, five seconds after our power play started. Frustrating way to lose.

I didn't get to watch - make up call to end the US powerplay, then Canada later gets a power play instead of a deserved penalty shot?

Poulin is not only awesome at hockey, but she's pretty nice on the eyes, too.

I'm not even sure it should've been a penalty shot, but I'd need to see the replay again. The slashing call was much worse, IMO.

That's about the size of it.

Canada was the better team for most of the 2nd and 3rd periods despite the score, but the refs really screwed up the game at the end there. Just call it straight, no makeup calls (both teams got a gift) and let the game play out as it should. Disappointing.

As a Canadian, I can say that live, it looked like it should have been.
On the first replay (from one angle), it looked like it should have been.
On the second replay (from a different angle)....I'm not so sure she even touched Wickenheiser.

I can fully understand why the refs called it a penalty at full speed, but I can't understand why it wasn't called a penalty shot when they made that decision.
   415. Squash Posted: February 20, 2014 at 03:24 PM (#4659855)

I'd say it pretty clearly should have been a penalty shot, but the slashing call was ridiculous as well. That sort of play happens many times of the course of a game and is never called a penalty. After that it all started spiraling for the refs - in the interests of being "fair" the US went from a power play of their own to a 5 on 3 deficit in overtime and were scored on.

The penalty shot situation never should have even happened in the first place - letting the game go to 3 on 3 on two fairly innocuous penalties on an extra-wide rink was going to lead to all sorts of goofiness out there. Someone was eventually going to get some sort of wacky breakaway off an overcommitment by the other team, which was why the two teams were playing so defensive for that whole 3 on 3 period. It was just a question of which team was going to get a lucky bounce. Which in this case went to Canada.
   416. zack Posted: February 20, 2014 at 03:41 PM (#4659870)
My feed skipped so I missed the overlapping penalties I think.

On the breakaway, it was clearly a penalty and if it's a penalty that it's a penalty shot, unless there's some discretion in the IIHF rulebook I'm not familiar with. It looked unintentional but Knight pulled her down when she went down.

The sad thing is Wickenheiser was out of gas, if Knight had just kept burning forward instead of trying to cross behind her she probably gets a stick on the puck before Wickenheiser can shoot. The US forward who completely muffed receiving the pass that led to the breakaway flubbed it big time.

I'm also Canadian and that's exactly my position.

I'm not sure the slash was a makeup call so much as it was because of the warning the ref gave earlier in the game for poking at the goalie. Still seems like a stupendously weak call, but I think that was the motivation.

On a third viewing, the American player seems to clip Wickenheiser's leg with her leg as she's falling. So, definitely contact.
   420. Langer Monk Posted: February 20, 2014 at 08:39 PM (#4660041)
Just got to watch myself. Ward was a penalty, Lamoureux's was just not - and what's worse, the ref didn't even call it right away, she waited a half second, then decided to call it. Knight definitely caught Wickenheiser's back leg, and that's a penalty shot.

Also not sure there's anything crueler than having to stand and wait for your silver medals right after a loss.

#427: The airport one? That was pretty much my reaction.

A question for Canadians, since I never played hockey on ice: when you're in the box of shame and your penalty expires, what determines whether you join the play or skate right across to the bench? Does the coach tell you when you go to the box, is it a "green-light" thing with the coach, or is it a read based on where the play is?

If the play is in the middle of your defensive zone, you immediately join the play as you want to kill that advantage.
If the play is in the neutral zone or attacking zone, you immediately go to the bench because they'll be doing a line change and you (most likely) aren't part of that line that is out there right now.

The rare time, when you come out of the box and your team has possession of the puck in the defensive zone, you cut to the centre line to see if you can get behind the defense for a breakaway pass.

British men's curling team says "No mas!" and concedes the gold medal game to Canada after only 8 ends (of 10).
They were trailing 9-3 at the time.

It's the first time a nation has won both the men's and women's curling gold medals in the same Olympics.

I have no idea who that player is. I don't think I've heard that name before.
Looking him up, he seems to be the workhorse defensemen for the Hurricanes.
   435. zack Posted: February 21, 2014 at 12:02 PM (#4660268)
Faulk isn't actually stepping up for Martin, I think he'll be the 7th D and probably will get 5 minutes.

Haven't been this nervous for a game in years.

NM, Pierre just said Canada has last change. You'd think it'd go to the higher seed.

As a Bruin fan the worst part of the Olympics has been the NBCSports commercial showing the Blackhawks last second victory in the finals last year. They can burn that ####### thing anytime they want to.

Pretty happy to be 0-0 the way we played. Canada was getting too many shots inside the circles.

Kessel and Kane with extra room? That's a dangerous situation I wouldn't want to get into too often.

Also, Kane faked that high stick!
   445. Random Transaction Generator Posted: February 21, 2014 at 01:08 PM (#4660335)
I always laugh when defencemen do that "pretend to skate hard but just churn your legs" trick to induce an icing call.
These refs aren't going to fall for it...

During small breaks in the game, CBC runs a little bug in the corner that tells the viewers what other Olympic events are currently being broadcast on other stations.

They can't honestly expect someone watching this game to say "Oh! Short track speed skating! Let's watch that instead!" and turn the channel.

Canadians cheated. I'm not sure how but that's what I'm going with.

The thing that struck me is that the complaint about the Canadians has always been "they don't play well on the big ice" but today the US looked befuddled by the ice surface. Our spacing was a mess, most notably we never got anyone in front of Price. Any NHL goalie, especially one as good as Price, is not going to have a problem when they get to see shots clean and then not have to worry about giving up a rebound.
   455. zack Posted: February 21, 2014 at 02:21 PM (#4660403)
Canada is why we can't have nice things.

I've thought since the beginning that Keith-Doughty-Pietrangelo-Weber was just so far above everyone elses' D-corps that they'd be extremely hard to beat, and I think that was the difference here. Not surprising that the 2nd best D-corps will be meeting them for gold, though the cupcake walk to the finals didn't hurt Sweden none.

I wasn't that upset about losing until I saw Getzlaf's bro face cheering the victory (not that the US doesn't have it's share of bros).

I was worried at first, on the first or second shift Kessel just blew right past Keith on the outside. But after that the Canadians did a pretty good job.

How the #### do the slalom racers know where to go? The poles seem everywhere but they just ignore some and go through others. Is it clearer on the course where the course actually is?

I believe the course is actually sets of gates mostly made up of two poles of the same color (I'm not exactly sure what the deal is though when there are poles set only a foot or two after the previous one). The only requirement is that they go "through" the gate but since they're trying to take the fastest route possible that results in them just maneuvering around the inner pole of each gate.

It is a little clearer when you're coming from above. You need to go between the two same colored poles, and if you are unclear, it's usually the one that would be harder to go around (if you find yourself going through 2 sets of gates without turning, you probably ###### up). The whole course is basically a sine wave. It gets a little confusing on the flushes, where 3 gates are arranged north-south rather than east-west.

Also, the course has been skied before you, even if you're the first racer, so there's a path of cleared snow to follow. Or if you've got a high number, giant ruts to bounce through. And once you've skied probably 5,000 slalom courses in your life you probably get a feel for these things.

Yeah, he basically used the Ukraine team mas a jumping off point for a rant on Putin's regime. Didn't pull many punches. It was jarring, after basically no commentary at all for two weeks.
   463. Dr. Vaux Posted: February 21, 2014 at 10:53 PM (#4660636)
The Old Navy commercial is funny, though only mildly. To hear some people talk, they seem to be dangerously close to proposing a "final solution"-esque censorship of black characters from television in order to make sure they avoid any hint of stereotyping. Let's see--white guys in ties in a cubicle . . . bearded guys in bandanas riding motorcycles . . . black airport cop acting belligerent . . . all are equally typical persons to encounter in the real world. Exaggeration of real world situations is the essence of comedy. Nothing about the commercial implies that the character is a fundamentally bad person, not that the portrayal of a black character who is a bad person is racist, anyway. Newsflash: black people are people, just like white people. They can be any kind of person. Do you claim that the actress was somehow forced into portraying the role? Possibly by some racist, misogynistic, hegemonic rape culture? Is it racist to show a black football player? A black blues guitarist? The world is full of people. Let's not be afraid of diversity.

   465. Dr. Vaux Posted: February 21, 2014 at 11:15 PM (#4660643)
And it's a testimony to the reach of the racist thought police that I feel bad about posting that, because it's by any objective measure the opposite of racist. The real world can't be improved through retreat into a sanitized fantasy world. I'm as virulently anti-racist as it's possible to be. Individuals are individuals, and only to be judged as such. Racism breaks my heart. It's one of the most fundamentally awful pathologies of humanity. Sexism breaks my heart. I'm a heart-on-the-sleeve liberal, damn it.

That's pretty sad on Sweden's part.

Back in the 1987 Canada Cup finals between Canada/USSR, the USSR team insisted that a Canadian referee (and not an American one) be used.

Finland isn't good enough to win a gold medal, but if they make it to the bronze, they seem to "want it more" than the team that is disappointed in landing there against them.
They genuinely seemed happy for Selanne, so that was pretty cool.

I expect Kane to get reamed for his point totals for the Olympics, but honestly I thought he was the best player on the ice for the US the last two games. Really the only US player to be any kind of offensive threat at all.

Well, best skater that should be for the Canada game. Quick was the best player.

I think there's some pretty solid statistical evidence that a goalie should never start back-to-backs (unless the gap between the backup and the starter is enormous). I think we saw some evidence of that today.

I'm sure that Latvian kid would have come out and played his heart out if they had a game the day after the Canada game.

...he would have died from exhaustion somewhere in the 2nd period obviously, but up until that point I bet he plays a good game!

Any chance this is the end of taking Brian Burke seriously?

I thought David Poile (Nashville) was the GM...or was Burke still around as some kind of consigliere?

No they haven't.

Yes, they did.

And after being shut out for the second time in a row following a lopsided 5-0 loss to Finland in Saturday's bronze medal game, Quick couldn't understand why his team failed to bounce back better from the 1-0 defeat to Canada the night before.

"??It shouldn'??t be too hard,"? he told NBC Pro Hockey Talk. "We do that all year long. We're professionals. We play back-to-backs all year long.

"There'??s no reason we show up and not piss a drop."

Quick didn't fail to put some of the blame for the loss on himself though.

“My job is to stop the puck, and I didn’t do that very well,” he said. “Team effort. We weren’t good.”

Lucky break for Canada as a goal post saves them again.

Jonathan Toews is awesome. Probably the most complete player in the game today.

I'm sure that Latvian kid would have come out and played his heart out if they had a game the day after the Canada game.

I thought I read that he was the backup, who only played because the starter was exhausted from the Switzerland game the day before.

The USA would have got away with a bronze if it weren't for those medaling kids.

Saves them from what? The only way a goal could have helped Sweden was if all the Canadian players would have committed suicide in shame for conceding against such an inferior team.

Nicklas Bäckström missed the final because of a failed doping test.

I'm so sad the Olympics are over. :(

NBC's online coverage was wonderful, I watched well over 100 hours of coverage and it was both easy to use and high quality. I also watched a lot of coverage on NBCSN in the last few days, and they were also very, very good. I can't wait for Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski to supplant the current NBC figure skating booth entirely.

Congratulations to the Russian athletes on bringing pride to your country, but a big #### you to Vladimir Putin.

I just finally saw Catching Fire yesterday. That is the filter through which I read your post. Suddenly I feel like I need to watch the closing ceremonies, if only to witness the start of the revolution*. Very creepy.

* Streaming online. The revolution will not be televised.

I think it was 1992 where NBC broke out the Olympic triplecast. I recall a lot of critical of it in part because events were always on different channels. Now every event is available somewhere if you have the technology, it's truly remarkable.

I'll miss the Olympics but I won't miss opening a thread with a giant picture of a toilet everyday at work.

Burke was one of the guys that was part of the 'selection committee'. He's the one that said Bobby Ryan couldn't spell intensity. Good call, Brian.

That was about as complete a game played by the Canadians as I've seen in a long time.
Other than that post, Sweden didn't really feel like they were threatening.
In fact, Canada seemed to double-down on the pressure in the 3rd period, and had more scoring chances than the desperate Swedes.
