OT: London Olympics Thread

A place to discuss sports that no one cares about for 3.9 years at a time.  Swimming, track, basketball, gymnastics, soccer, whatever.  I like ‘em obscure.

Team Handball: Can France (m) defend their gold?  Can South Korea (w) break the Northern European dominance of the sport?
Fencing: Can the US Women sweep the saber medals again?  How much fencing can I watch online before I realize I’m wasting my life?
Canoe Slalom: Can David Florence bring back gold for Great Britain in this, the greatest and most traditional of all summer olympic competitions?

And more!

US is dominating Brazil in the first set of Volleyball. 17-7.

And NBC is not showing it live. Why, so they can show a 5 minute highlight tonight?

Yeah, yeah, I know, internet streaming. But since I don't want my browser crashing every 5 minutes, that's out.
   1602. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: August 11, 2012 at 01:52 PM (#4206239)
set point, and Brazil has scored one point off of a serve. 25-11, total throttling in the first.

US just took the first set from Brazil in Women's Volleyball 25-11. Wow.

The unfamiliar horse thing makes the 3rd event in Modern Pentathlon fascinating. I'm of belief that the horses are racist, given who I've seen them buck.
   1604. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: August 11, 2012 at 01:54 PM (#4206245)
What's hilarious is that we got nearly every serve of Japan v Korea, Bronze medal match on NBC.
1605. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: August 11, 2012 at 02:03 PM (#4206256)
I love how modern pentathlon is staging it's final events. A biathlon style cross country run with starts staggered by how far behind the present leader they are. Gonna make for an excellent finish. I wish heptathlon and decathlon would do the same.

I will say that NBC's streaming has gotten BETTER this second week. Not perfect, but not crashing every five minutes.
   1607. Group Captain Mandrake Posted: August 11, 2012 at 02:07 PM (#4206262)
Brazil making a match of it. Too bad NBC is showing the mountain bike race from 5 hours ago, and MSNBC is showing the pentathlon. Talk about trivial events (the latter, not the former).

It crashes for me every single time they go to commercial.

Wait, what? Modern Pentathlon is awesome. It would be even cooler if the participants had to do them all directly in a row.

I think that's the Nordic combined, where your XC start time is determined by your finish in the jumps. Biathlon just makes you ski a penalty lap for every target missed.
   1611. Group Captain Mandrake Posted: August 11, 2012 at 02:22 PM (#4206278)
OK, it's going down to the third set.
1612. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: August 11, 2012 at 02:23 PM (#4206279)
It's similar to biathlon in that you do a lap, then shoot, then another lap, then shoot. But no penalty laps for missing. Czech guy caught the Chinese from behind. Go Czech Republic!

i did not see this coming for the US. Wow, quite a turn of events after getting walloped in the first.

Brazil OH's were unstoppable after the 1st game. US block was ineffective, wasn't that close.
1616. I am going to be Frank Posted: August 11, 2012 at 03:24 PM (#4206336)
Missed the first set but wow Brazil outplayed the US the last three. The US couldn't serve, block or receive. Brazil picked up pretty much everything.
   1617. Swedish Chef Posted: August 11, 2012 at 04:02 PM (#4206363)
USA ran well, Jamaica ran better.
   1618. bunyon Posted: August 11, 2012 at 08:08 PM (#4206504)
And now, a history lesson.
1619. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: August 11, 2012 at 08:11 PM (#4206509)
Hell of a successful Olympics for the US. 15 more medals and 6 more golds than the Chinese, with another gold or silver in the bag in Men's Basketball. We could get up to 104-105 total medals. No one else is at even 90. Back to complete dominance after not winning the Gold count in Beijing. Pretty damned impressive.

nbc's fascination with platform diving is weird

So, NBC cut away just as Mo Farrah was making a move in the 5K.

On tape delay. I suppose this means the move didn't amount to much but sheesh.

Its girls in swimsuits. Unfortunately, it looks like half of the girls look like they deliberately stunted puberty.
   1625. bunyon Posted: August 11, 2012 at 10:34 PM (#4206583)
No, they just missed Farrah's first move. Amazing.

That must explain their obsession, Harveys. An American winning.

oh yeah, and seeing the moisture glistening off their skin as they come out of the water to see their scores, that's pretty great as well.

also, as noted, an american won gold, plus a diver from the host country won a medal, and the reigning gold medalist is one of the very few openly gay athletes in the olympics.
   1630. ASmitty Posted: August 11, 2012 at 11:13 PM (#4206611)
Pretty much anytime a non-Chinese diver wins gold you have to stop the presses.

Apparently 80 of the top 100 marathon runners this year are Kenyan or Ethiopian, 49 from Kenya and 31 from Ethiopia. A Kenyan championship would be much more competitive than this race.

Mountain bike racing is almost as boring as dressage (Harvey I'm not questioning the skill, just watchability).

Why do they do such a poor jon constructing the rosters? Carmelo Anthony was playing center for 10 minutes there. This game should have been a blowout.

   1651. ASmitty Posted: August 12, 2012 at 12:21 PM (#4206749)
Dwight Howard was on the roster, but had back surgery. Not sure why they didn't make a change after he wasn't going to be able to go to London. Maybe they couldn't?

What was the pool of big men for the USA to choose from with Howard & Bosh out? Chandler was suppose to be the rim protector, but today his play didn't adjust well to the refs and Spain's size.

I guess Bynum would have been a better choice, no idea if he was interested or even considered.

i think bynum was nursing various injuries. i know he was/is planning to go to germany to have the same serum surgery that kobe had during the lockout.

and the US did lose dwight howard and chris bosh and blake griffin. you could probably make an argument that all 3 would have been chosen over the 3 bigs the US actually brought (chandler, love, and davis). they were also playing without derrick rose.

though it should be noted that spain was playing without ricky rubio, and that was probably a bigger loss than any of the players who weren't on the US roster.
   1654. hokieneer Posted: August 12, 2012 at 12:34 PM (#4206756)
Plus Duncan and Garnett are too old to be spending 4+ weeks playing international ball. Aldridge was hurt as well. The USA big men pool is shallow to start with, so when you have to eliminate 6-7 of them due to injuries/age, you end up with what you saw today.

though it should be noted that spain was playing without ricky rubio, and that was probably a bigger loss than any of the players who weren't on the US roster.

Perhaps, but with a healthy Howard, Spain would have had trouble breaking 75 today.

I've come around on handball. I won't says I'm a fan but I appreciate the game a lot more. Mike Gorman and the woman announcing the final have done a great job of educating while informing. Handball aficionados may feel differently but I don't feel like they are going least common denominator but using the occasional lapses in play to add some insight for a newbie like me.

hooray for jake varner and hooray for u.s. wrestling

after a series of rotten draws for other u.s. wrestlers varner takes advantage of a less arduous side of the bracekt to get to the medal rounds and then wrestled well and won the gold

good stuff
   1658. ASmitty Posted: August 12, 2012 at 01:14 PM (#4206777)
And bronze for Coleman Scott. A slow start for USA wrestling turns into a respectable medal haul.

Jordan Burroughs says he wants to chase John Smith's record of six consecutive world/Olympic titles before considering MMA. That would be very good for USA wrestling.

   1665. PreservedFish Posted: August 12, 2012 at 03:05 PM (#4206822)
I don't really know which centers the basketball team should have added, but they should have been able to put at least one large man on the floor at all times. In the 4th quarter Carmelo was guarding Serge Ibaka, and on offense all five guys were just standing around the perimeter. The massive talent advantage was severely undercut by a massive tactical disadvantage. I feel like the team could have benefited from any old flabby big guy, like whoever the current version of Will Perdue is.

Adele is a big deal, no? Lots of good Scottish bands though I don't know what kind of crossover appeal they have. Clearly they should have taken this opportunity to give the world the Super Furry Animals reunion with Rhys Ifans the world has been clamoring for!

So, I was reading a story about Missy Franklin. She will be returning to high school for her senior year, and is deciding whether to go to college, or go pro and take millions in endorsements. First, she could of course do both. She would just have to pay her way through college. But it got me thinking. The NCAA is so anal about their athletes receiving the tiniest amount of compensation, how could an Olympic athlete possibly remain eligible? College athletes get in trouble for one too many campus visits, making long distance phone calls from the coach's office, etc. How many freebies have these Olympic athletes gotten over the past 2 weeks?

so i just happened to turn on the tv just now (3pm in los angeles) to see what was being shown, and they are showing a tape delay of the marathon. that wasn't even in the tv listings.

jeez, i hate NBC. i know i could watch it streaming, but i can't remember our damn password for our provider, and my g.f. is not here.
