OT: London Olympics Thread

A place to discuss sports that no one cares about for 3.9 years at a time.  Swimming, track, basketball, gymnastics, soccer, whatever.  I like ‘em obscure.

Team Handball: Can France (m) defend their gold?  Can South Korea (w) break the Northern European dominance of the sport?
Fencing: Can the US Women sweep the saber medals again?  How much fencing can I watch online before I realize I’m wasting my life?
Canoe Slalom: Can David Florence bring back gold for Great Britain in this, the greatest and most traditional of all summer olympic competitions?

And more!

I've heard about Imboden, isn't he still a teenager?
   502. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: July 31, 2012 at 09:20 AM (#4196807)
Yeah. 18.
   503. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: July 31, 2012 at 09:47 AM (#4196823)
Man, I think Race can take him. I'm so nervous! 2-1 Race!
   504. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: July 31, 2012 at 09:50 AM (#4196828)
Baldini taking over.
   505. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: July 31, 2012 at 09:51 AM (#4196830)
Man, Race ties it back up at 5!

If you are not watching this, why watch the olympics...
   506. Gamingboy Posted: July 31, 2012 at 09:51 AM (#4196831)
Baldini screams like he's won a gold medal every time he gets a touch...
   507. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: July 31, 2012 at 09:54 AM (#4196835)
9-5 Baldini at the first break. Baldini's attack is vicious and Race can't parry-riposte effectively. Meanwhile, Baldini's handling Race's attacks fairly well.

there's a reason why Baldini is a gold medalist and world champion. I had hoped he would be more washed up then this....
   508. Gamingboy Posted: July 31, 2012 at 09:56 AM (#4196839)
He's just toying with Imboden. I don't even follow Fencing and I can tell Imboden is completely outmatched here.
   509. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: July 31, 2012 at 09:56 AM (#4196841)
Baldini's flicks are unreal.
   510. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: July 31, 2012 at 09:58 AM (#4196843)
OK, Race breaks the run.
   511. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: July 31, 2012 at 09:58 AM (#4196846)
Holy ####, this is fencing.
   512. Gamingboy Posted: July 31, 2012 at 09:59 AM (#4196847)
Oh, getting back into it...
   513. Gamingboy Posted: July 31, 2012 at 10:00 AM (#4196849)
And as soon as I say that, Baldini goes on a run again and wins.
   514. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: July 31, 2012 at 10:00 AM (#4196851)
the german rider tied for the lead withdrew?
   515. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: July 31, 2012 at 10:02 AM (#4196853)
:(

Oh well. Nine touches on Baldini. Man up for the next World Cup, Race.
   516. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: July 31, 2012 at 10:02 AM (#4196854)
Baldini's parry-ripostes were simply unfreaking believable.
   517. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: July 31, 2012 at 10:06 AM (#4196858)
Man, after waiting to watch Imboden for so long, it went by so fast. I can't imagine how he must feel. I think there was probably a little too much optimism about him. His two great finishes at Catania and Paris came by knocking off Peter Joppich, who is obviously not what he once was.

   518. Gamingboy Posted: July 31, 2012 at 10:13 AM (#4196866)
The US Judoka (Stevens) looks like he's been in a bar fight. Has bandaged "mummifying" parts of his face.
   519. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: July 31, 2012 at 10:18 AM (#4196870)
Well, there is still teams. I think USA might be able to handle France in the first round of the team foil. Yes, it's France, but Sintes and Le Peychoux are Lucien Gaudin.
   520. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: July 31, 2012 at 10:18 AM (#4196871)
God, someone beat an Italian foilist already. come on Ota!
   521. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: July 31, 2012 at 10:22 AM (#4196875)
14-14 Ota vs. Cassara going to overtime. Cassara is top 2 in the world, and this is a bit of surprise. But Ota has had some great finishes at world events as well. I actually called this being tight in the fencing forum thread.
   522. Gamingboy Posted: July 31, 2012 at 10:24 AM (#4196880)
Stevens lost in Judo (although he'll have chance at bronze), but, man, he was scrappy. His face had at least two wrapping bandages around him but he kept fighting and it looked like it was going to be pretty close. Wonder if he'll be good enough to go in the bronze....
   523. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: July 31, 2012 at 10:35 AM (#4196887)
the queen has to be thrilled with zara phillips placing 8th in eventing.

and england of course. the young lady did well

but how about the germans getting 1st and 3rd?
   524. hokieneer Posted: July 31, 2012 at 10:47 AM (#4196905)
Why are all the foil QF held at the same time? Not very spectator friendly. That hard pressed for time?
   525. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: July 31, 2012 at 10:58 AM (#4196917)
And just as I say that, Cassara falls behind that wily Egyptian 13-9. Oh Man, has an African ever made the top 4?
   526. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: July 31, 2012 at 11:00 AM (#4196919)
And DOWN GOES WORLD CHAMP CASSARA! Pretty amazing.

Meanwhile, Baldini fencing like a man determined after being booted out of Beijing for false doping allegations. The top 4 should be fascinating.
   527. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: July 31, 2012 at 11:04 AM (#4196923)
And Aspromonte got rocked by Lei. Holy cow, the Italians just got decimated! Hurrah! Now I can root for Baldini to win gold without puking.
   528. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: July 31, 2012 at 11:05 AM (#4196926)
Just confirmed: no African has EVER won an olympic medal in men's foil (perhaps not in fencing, period). This is potential history being made by Abouelkassem, though he still needs to win one more bout.
   529. Gamingboy Posted: July 31, 2012 at 11:10 AM (#4196932)
Check Olympics-Reference, WJ. Surely that would know.... it's the B-Ref of Olympics, after all...
   530. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: July 31, 2012 at 11:12 AM (#4196939)
Korea beats China, and boy is that Korean excited!
   531. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: July 31, 2012 at 11:13 AM (#4196943)
So the final four is Italy, China, Korea, Egypt.

I don't think anyone saw that coming.
   532. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: July 31, 2012 at 11:18 AM (#4196951)
Just checked, an no African nation has ever won an olympic medal in fencing. Cool!
   533. Gamingboy Posted: July 31, 2012 at 11:43 AM (#4196989)
I wonder what other long-time traditional Olympic events there are where ENTIRE CONTINENTS have been shut out?
   534. Crispix Attacks 2: Swag Airlines Posted: July 31, 2012 at 11:55 AM (#4197000)
Is it that surprising? Some regions of the world just have no tradition of certain sports, and no governments that want to make massive "prestige" investments in teaching them to people.

The entire continent of South America barely ever does anything at the Olympics except in volleyball, basketball, soccer and sailing.

It isn't really surprising, although with how long some of these events have been going, you'd have to think that there would be just a freak victory somewhere- like having that one good gymnast, runner or swimmer that gets in there and medals in a event.

Well, that seems to be happening before our eyes in Men's foil today. Though I wouldn't call it freak. Dude has looked awesome and has knocked off two World Champions in Joppich and Cassara.

You could also have someone from Europe or the U.S. with dual citizenship, who gets shut out of their own country's team and competes for their ancestral homeland instead. For example, French-born Benjamin Boukpeti won a surprise bronze for Togo in slalom canoe in Beijing. It is the only Olympic medal Togo has ever won in any sport. But such things are rare almost by definition.
   538. Gamingboy Posted: July 31, 2012 at 12:21 PM (#4197037)
Yeah, it seems like most of the Table Tennis field is Chinese Expats...
   539. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: July 31, 2012 at 01:10 PM (#4197135)
Fantastic bout so far. You don't see this much counter-riposting in fencing these days.
   540. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: July 31, 2012 at 01:12 PM (#4197139)
Baldini in serious trouble.

Harves, this is the fencing thread. Take it outside!
   546. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: July 31, 2012 at 01:39 PM (#4197177)
Jesus, 2-1 at the first break. But what action!
   547. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: July 31, 2012 at 01:51 PM (#4197201)
This is a nutty, high flying bout.
   548. hokieneer Posted: July 31, 2012 at 01:52 PM (#4197203)
a red card? WTF is this
   549. Random Transaction Generator Posted: July 31, 2012 at 01:53 PM (#4197205)
The neverending tennis match ended at 25-23.

Sad face for Canadian. :(
   550. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: July 31, 2012 at 01:57 PM (#4197212)
Both guys have red cards for falling down. It's like watching Italian soccer.

This. Is. Nuts.

Aspromonte, Cassara, Baldini....the great Italian washout of 2012.
   556. hokieneer Posted: July 31, 2012 at 03:30 PM (#4197333)
It appears Lei has never faced a lefty before. He has lunged in chest first at Abouelkassem at least 3-4 times while trying to wrap his left hand around and inside. To the untrained eye, looked like easy points for the Egyptian.
   557. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: July 31, 2012 at 03:30 PM (#4197334)
Fantastic gold medal match. Aboulkessem's counter attacks are so ballsy. In the first period, I thought the preparations by Lei were a bait to get him to counter, but whatever it is, it ain't working.

Should be a heck iof an ending.
   558. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: July 31, 2012 at 03:32 PM (#4197341)
Two touches to glory. If Lei can simply finish his attacks he can beat those counters.
   559. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: July 31, 2012 at 03:33 PM (#4197342)
To the untrained eye, looked like easy points for the Egyptian.

It's still Lei's right of way, and still a risky risky attempt by the Egyptian. If Lei finishes and puts a light on, even after he gets hit, its his attack. But Abouelkassem's timing and distance is perfect.
   560. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: July 31, 2012 at 03:34 PM (#4197346)
And a nice stop hit by Lei to give him a taste of his medicine.
   561. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: July 31, 2012 at 03:36 PM (#4197350)
Aw, nuts. Another gold for china.
   562. hokieneer Posted: July 31, 2012 at 03:36 PM (#4197351)
hmm it appears I need to learn the rules of this fencing.
   563. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: July 31, 2012 at 03:37 PM (#4197353)
The counterattacks did him in once Lei realized that's all he was going to do.
   564. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: July 31, 2012 at 03:38 PM (#4197355)
Note my post in 558. I should be a fencing play by play guy.
   565. Gamingboy Posted: July 31, 2012 at 05:08 PM (#4197503)
Michael Phelps and Team USA swam like it was 2008 and, well, let's just say that I'm putting money that NBC will involve the words "Greatest Olympic Champion" tonight.

   569. Kurt Posted: July 31, 2012 at 10:26 PM (#4197720)

They can only give ten medals total in fencing, so every olympics they leave one weapon for each gender out. This year its ws and me.

Yeah, but Fab Five was the Michigan basketball players. It's basically a proper noun.

NBC won't let sports fans watch events live as a way to inflate the ratings of their casual-audience-wanting-a-human-interest-story primetime broadcasts, you think they give a damn for history?

Besides, "Magnificent Seven" had been taken already as well.

Women's badminton turns into a farce as four teams intentionally try to lose to get a "better" draw - South Korea and Indonesia both try to lose the same match, with both teams getting disqualified, only to have the disqualification later rescinded...
   578. Yardape Posted: August 01, 2012 at 02:22 AM (#4197799)
Is this just us Americans/Westerners being sour grapes, or might it really be something.

Some of both, but sour grapes are definitely part. For proof, compare the NBC announcers' "I'm not saying, I'm just saying" routine with Ye to the kid gloves they're going to give to convicted American drug cheat Jessica Hardy when she swims.
   579. AJM Posted: August 01, 2012 at 04:04 AM (#4197814)
I don't understand why it's okay to accuse someone of doping based on absolutely nothing.

Baseball writers don't know what you mean.

They can only give ten medals total in fencing

What's the purpose of that? Swimming has about 267 medals.

They have probably just not begged and kowtowed enough yet.

Swimming is the backbone of the first week of the Olympics and have entrenched power. Swimming depends on the Olympics as their big showcase, but the Olympics also needs swimming as the big event before track & field.

By the way, I'd like to say that in my opinion, if I could have the athleticism of the average athlete of any sport, I'd probably want to have the athleticism of a Water Polo player. They can swim, they have the physicality of hockey players, and the endurance of soccer players.

For real athleticism you have to go to Olympic village and the other events.

I'm still preparing my American Team Handball League (ATBL). 8 teams, 32 game schedule, playing every two or three days, playing immediately after the end of the NBA post-season, except for Olympic years, where it would start earlier so that the Olympics would fit into the All-Star break. Teams would be split between major markets like New York and LA, as well as markets where there is no NBA and/or NHL competition. Players would be mix of foreign professionals and Americans recruited from DII and DIII basketball. Now just need a billionaire investor.

That said, there should never be a situation in a tournament where you are incentivized to lose. If there aren't enough courts to play the games simultaneously, then randomize the draw or something.

The Olympics are supposed to be different from other sporting enterprises, that's what I mean. I realize they are not.

And I love sportsmanship, so I wish it weren't so, but the blame in the badminton scandal is entirely on the organizers for setting up a situation that allowed it. As it turns out, they were even told by the coaches at the beginning of the olympics that this would happen, and they dismissed it out of hand.
