OT: London Olympics Thread

A place to discuss sports that no one cares about for 3.9 years at a time.  Swimming, track, basketball, gymnastics, soccer, whatever.  I like ‘em obscure.

Team Handball: Can France (m) defend their gold?  Can South Korea (w) break the Northern European dominance of the sport?
Fencing: Can the US Women sweep the saber medals again?  How much fencing can I watch online before I realize I’m wasting my life?
Canoe Slalom: Can David Florence bring back gold for Great Britain in this, the greatest and most traditional of all summer olympic competitions?

And more!

yeah but those other associations don't have any tickets. that's the problem i am hearing about. you weave your way through the website and then get told no tickets are available. meanwhile you see the venues and they are half empty and sebastian coe insisting everything is fine
   702. Gamingboy Posted: August 01, 2012 at 10:02 PM (#4198569)

Residents of the UK and "designated European countries"* can buy tickets direct from a central web site. Residents of all other countries (including the US) must get tickets through their own national associations.

* Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

Here's the web site with the rules.

Oh. Okay, I kind of meant the Schengen Zone to be a question, but I didn't put in a question mark.

Schengen Zone

Close. The Schengen zone is about movement of people across borders. I think the Olympic ticket thing has to do with the European free trade zone, which is a different area. Anyways, I think it would controvert European law for London to offer tickets to British people but not those other European countries.

Yeah, pretty sure it's something EU related.
   707. Richard Posted: August 01, 2012 at 11:21 PM (#4198600)
that list looks like the it's the EU countries plus the Countries in EFTA (Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Switzerland), which is a free trade association for non EU countries that aligns with the EU for some purposes.

The Nathan Adrian win was, amazingly, even closer than I first thought once I saw it on the HD. I mean, if anything can be closer that 1/100th of a second.

So one day after lobbing thinly veiled doping accusations at a 16-year-old Chinese girl, NBC decides to run a puff piece on a U.S. swimmer who's been suspended for drugs and how she overcame adversity. Yeah, tough break, getting caught for doping. Blind nationalism is alive and well!

It's just the NYS problem, the lardasses that get comped the best tickets don't bother to turn up.

Don't know if anyone else saw it, but the refereeing/scoring of the third round between Shimizu of Japan and Abdullhamidov of Azerbaijan was a perfect example of why a lot of people don't take Olympic boxing seriously. Shimizu knocked him down twice and Abdullhamidov spent most of the round crawling around or barely on his feet yet there wasn't a single standing eight-count and the Azeri got credit for 10 scoring hits (or whatever the term is).

That decision has been overturned:
The boxer from Azerbaijan fell down six times during the 3rd round. According to our rules, the Referee should have counted at least three times. In this case, following the AIBA Technical & Competition Rules, the decision should have been RSC (Referee Stop Contest); Therefore the protest lodged by the Japanese corner is accepted and the result of this bout overturned.
   713. AJM Posted: August 02, 2012 at 08:24 AM (#4198682)
I'm surprised it got overturned. I wonder if they'll have to give back the money now.

BBC Newsnight has uncovered evidence of secret payments of millions of dollars from Azerbaijan to international boxing organisation World Series Boxing (WSB).

Whistleblowers say that WSB's chief claimed the money was in return for a guarantee that Azerbaijani fighters would win two boxing gold medals at the London 2012 Olympics.

That article is from last September.

Other idea of sports thing I'd create if I was a billionaire and/or had a billionaire friend: A United States Game. Like the Olympics, only between state or regions or something like that. Some individual states have things like that. It'd feature most Olympic sports, as well as sports that aren't in the Olympics but which are popular in the USA. Would be a flip version of the Olympics year-wise: Summer US games in Winter Olympic years, Winter US games in Summer years.

This would be awesome. Like the real Olympics it would be dominated by a few contingents (Yay California, New York and Texas, you needed boosts to your egos!) but damn it would be fun to watch. Establishing residency would be a huge off-year story by itself.

Also, WJ thanks for #627. I watched Homer vs Dumitrescu in sabre and had really no idea what was going on, fun to watch though.

EDIT: and I should probably refresh from the night before. Cokes to those who mentioned Cali dominating.

The French women's foil powerhouse (swept all thre individual medals) is currently battling their ancient rivals France in the team semis. I love Vezzali, and don't hate the women like I do the men, but GO FRANCE.
   716. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: August 02, 2012 at 08:41 AM (#4198690)
Right now it is Maitrejean vs. Vezzali, which was one of the greatest matches of this year's worlds.
   717. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: August 02, 2012 at 08:44 AM (#4198691)
Vezzali, the great champion, starts Italy off with a 4-2 lead. Errigo, the silver medalist, taking the strip now for Italy. Man, what a team. They have the gold medalist DiFrancisca fencing C strip.
   718. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: August 02, 2012 at 08:47 AM (#4198693)
Guyart taking it to Errigo out of the gate! The French always seem to have great fighting spirit in the team event.

I love these arguments taking place in French, Italian, and English at the same time.

ohmygod, DiFrancisca is gorgeous. I am in love.
   721. Weekly Journalist_ Posted: August 02, 2012 at 08:54 AM (#4198699)
DiFrancisca predictably hammered the French C. It's 15-8 now going to the next 3. France will need Maitrejean to go on a run against..someone. The problem is there is no weak link in the Italian team.

(Plan to allow higher seeds to choose their elimination-round opponents)
Well, I see one obvious downside. How the hell do you determine who the #1 seed is. Sure it's easy in MLB or any other league, where the post-season follows a long regular season, but in the Olympics?

They already have to determine the #1 seed somehow, so, the same way they do it now. For instance, in badmininton, they use a round-robin tournament. They could use the exact same round-robin preliminary round, but instead of the team with the best record playing the team with the worst record, the best team would play the team they chose to face.

Guyart deinitely looks strongest for France. If there is a weak link for Italy, it's ironically probably Vezzali, who is on the wrong side of 38.

This is an instance where it would have been useful to use "literally"; "she literally fell on her face". If "literally" hadn't meant "figuratively" as it does these days, of course.

The feel good Olympic story of the day!

The path to the Olympics is not cheap, something a New Zealander named Logan Campbell discovered upon returning home from his taekwondo loss four years ago in Beijing. He faced a mountain of bills from travel, equipment, and training, almost $120,000 worth in American currency, and he couldn't keep asking his parents to pay it.

London was going to cost him another $200,000. He needed money. He needed it fast.

So he opened a brothel

Not surprisingly, the brothel, and the publicity it stirred in Auckland when he announced his intentions in 2009, did not impress his country's sports federation. The people in charge of protecting the nation's sporting image did not see an athlete talking openly about the selling of flesh to fund his trip to the next Olympics as a reflection of their values. The fact brothels are legal in New Zealand, as long as a list of guidelines is met, didn't much impress the country's sports ministers.

The New Zealand Olympic Committee sent him a letter telling him to stop linking prostitution to funding an Olympics journey or they would sue.

But something remarkable happened. Money came for taekwondo. More money than the country's taekwondo team had ever received. No longer desperate for funds, Campbell sold the brothel in 2011. This spring, New Zealand put him on its London team.

Maybe because of this new peace, Campbell did not seem happy to be asked about his former business as he sat in the lobby of the East London school where he was training on Wednesday.

"I sold the brothel so I don't really want to talk about it now, OK," he said.

Yet as he said this, there also seemed a perception he wanted to eliminate. He senses that people think he was a sleazy pimp selling women on the street corner. This, he said, was not true.

"It's a legal business in New Zealand," Campbell said. "It's completely different from other countries in the world. There was no – I don't know – no one was forced into the industry, and they're not doing it because they are in poverty because we have a really good welfare system."

He stopped for a moment.

"It's more of like a higher-class thing than you see around the world. I think a lot of people don't understand that. As compared … to places like Thailand [where] I know what it's like in the poorer countries, where people don't have a choice to get into that sort of industry. But in New Zealand it's completely different, so it's fine."

Campbell said his parents didn't object to his running a brothel. Back in 2009, he told several New Zealand news outlets that his mother's worries were calmed after meeting several of the women who worked for her son.

"I've never had anyone in New Zealand be like, 'Why did you do that? That's not right,' or anything like that," he said.

Still, a brothel is a brothel. And this one, according to news reports at the time, had 14 rooms. Campbell was quoted as calling it "an escort agency." A website bearing his name was filled with pictures of Campbell in his taekwondo gear welcoming visitors to donate to his Olympics quest. "Or if you are in Auckland," he said on the site, "show your support by visiting the high-class escort agency I have just opened up."

The site promised "the finest range of intelligent ladies, the most luxurious facilities on the market" and told prospective clients to "fulfill your fantasy, bi-doubles, Greek, fantasy, dress, and much much more." First-time visitors became VIP members, a privilege that earned them "a number of free extras."

As Campbell walked from the school to a waiting bus on Wednesday, he seemed far less enthusiastic than he did back then. He said he never imagined owning a brothel and only got involved when a friend asked him to help operate a "private club" to "just sit there and make sure everything" was fine. His involvement grew when he realized how much he needed to raise.

"I came home after the Olympics, and I had no job and nothing to do," he said. "I needed to make some money if I wanted to go to the next one in London, so bam!"

Less than two years after opening the brothel with a business partner, he sold it, he said.

"I got no regrets, I wouldn't do it again," he said.

I believe that Phelps could, if he wanted to, stay around until Rio and have a good shot to at least medal (not necessarily gold) in at least some events. But he won't settle for something like that. He wants to go out on his own terms.

Yes. Maybe even match what he's doing today. I'm not sure why he doesn't do it unless he figures the money will roll in forever no matter what he does.

I think its the tedium of rigorous practice, if he were to go for Rio, I think three or four events would be more worth it. I can see shoulder problems for swimmers.

So, post-Olympics the kayak course probably gets as much use as a ski jump.

Is Phelps really as thick as he comes across in interviews? I understand that no athlete wants to say anything controversial on TV but my goodness, if he is really that dense someone is going to have to be responsible for signing his endorsement checks and making sure that he doesn't get lost on the way to whatever function is planned for that day.

Eh, when the USA or wherever gets the Olympics in 2024 or 2028 he'll be able to be the mascot and torch-lighter. Just hopefully the US doesn't get the 2026 winter games. If that happens, he'd have to skate. And nobody wants to see Michael Phelps skate.

(Actually, personally, I think that if the USA- and especially LA- were to get the Olympics in the 2020s, there would be only one choice for final torch bearer: Magic Johnson)

On the other side, it would mean bringing in pro boxing and all of the people involved in it.

Carmelo is wasting a career night in FIBA play; I hoped nobody bet on Nigeria.

156-73! And just imagine what the team could have done if they played defense or anything like that! What a way to end the day for Team USA.

I might have bet on Nigeria if I knew how to bet on stuff, since Tunisia beat the spread (the spread being 55) yesterday.

Sorry, it wasn't the US fight that was weird, it was the Cuba/Iran fight (a match made in GOP heaven). The Iranian was DQ'd and it looked pretty shaky, though I'm no expert.

Slamball should be an Olympic sport. Honestly, all media attention given to the NHL should be devoted to Slamball. But first, Slamball has to be revived as a sport that people actually play.

That's dumb because hockey is by far the best commercial sport in the Olympics.

Baseball, cricket, football and rugby are not Olympic sports. Soccer is U-23's (mostly) and has a qualification process that excludes half of the best teams. In road cycling, the Olympics is barely on the calendar. Basketball doesn't have the international quality yet. Olympic boxing is stupid. I have no idea about handball.

In hockey, all the best teams automatically qualify, there are 6.5 teams that could win the gold in any year, the players and fans care about the Olympics, the level of play is phenomenal to the point that it makes the NHL look like ####, and there are real rivalries between the participants.

Provided, of course, that they can work out this CBA.

I think the Slamball comment was something of a joke Zack, but I do agree with you that of all of the "commercial" sports (or, rather, sports where the Olympics are not the pinnacle event) in the Olympic movement, Hockey is the one with the best Olympic competition.

You didn't mention one of those sports though: tennis. Olympic tennis HAS greatly improved. Although it doesn't bring that many points to the winner in the professional tours, it usually gets all of the big players in (only Nadal was missing this year, and that is because he's hurt), which is a change from the early days. However, I have to think that the UK would go far more nuts if Andy Murray were to win WIMBLEDON at Wimbledon than if he were to win "only" the Olympics at Wimbledon.

It'll be interesting to see how well Golf does in the Olympics starting in Rio. Have they announced yet how they are doing it? I presume it'll be Men's and Women's competitions and maybe some "team" competitions...

WTF? 300 posts on fencing and the only mention of New Zealand is brothel boy. Nothing about our ####### dominance in rowing. C'mon, our men's double scull (I think it's the scull, what am I, Mr. Rowing?) broke the world record by 6 seconds in a freaking heat. Two gold medal-winning performances in an hour.

Here's hoping we can pull out a few track cycling medals and of course Val Adams in the shotput, then we can probably call it a Games.

The shoot-off in archery is a genius tiebreaker. One arrow, closest to the middle wins.

Can't believe China is still ahead of us in the Medal count (39-37). Luckily, we have Track & Field to fall back on or this would be close.

If I remember correctly, the only T&F event that China is expected to medal in is hurdles.

They might get medals on the women's side in the marathon, 20K Walk and the weight events. They are not favored in any of those events.

In previous years, I know, Silver did daily looks at Olympic medal counts and such and probabilities. He isn't this year, I just noticed. Which is odd.

Also, yes, Azarenka is kind of one of the best players in the world, not "some Belorussian lady".

Serena is playing amazingly well.

Federer was pretty sloppy in his match. He'll need to tighten it up for the final.

Time for the main event, Murray-Djokovic. They just played an amazing point on Murray's third service game.
