OT: Monthly NBA Thread- June 2014

I estimate only 10-12 Primates care about the NBA, but with our own thread, we won’t detract from what this site is really about: Vladimir Putin’s draft strategy, Stephen Drew’s breakfast, and whether Kevin has taken a material step toward harming Russell Westbrook.

So apparently these are a thing now.

Goddamnit Clevelanders. There seems to be no limit on how crazy girlfriend (then ex-girlfriend, then girlfriend again) we actually are.

I can't fathom any motivation for Boston to make that three-team trade other than gearing up for a Love trade.

A real, non-terrible center and a first round pick that will probably be lottery or teens if Lebron has any sense.

Frank Isola says Melo to the Knicks

Not that I don't think this is likely right and the most likely outcome, still:

A person close to Anthony told The News on Wednesday that barring a last minute change of heart Anthony will re-sign with the Knicks after "agonizing over this" for the past week.

"He will have something for everybody on Thursday," said the friend who was with Anthony before Anthony's scheduled workout with Kevin Durant and Kevin Love in Los Angeles on Wednesday. "He is really torn because this is the biggest decision of his career. But he wants to get it done in New York. He told me he believes in Phil."

Not the strongest source. Even just 'anonymous sources' sounds better than this.

2007 - other reports concur

2005 - easy call for them. thornton isn't great, but he only has one year left on the deal. they get a cost controlled decent player in zeller and a first round pick and give up nothing but $. plus, they had to use the pierce tpe ASAP.

Nor do I think there's much chance of it being wrong. Likely someone Isola trusts told him off the record "yep, it's done" and that was good enough for him to put it out there and get the scoop.

That Isola report is saying "he's coming back to the Knicks unless he isn't" - it's super useless.

So it seems like the Lebron to Cle is picking up steam, which means I even more strongly think that Wiggins for Love is going to happen. What other parts are needed to fill out the deal? Minnesota should force the Cavs to take on Martin's salary, which means Varejao plus one of Bennett, Thompson, Waiters, plus any draft picks. Which one would the Wolves want?

If LeBron goes to Cleveland, I'll say Wiggins, Waiters, Thompson, Bennett, Miami's 1st rounder, and contract filler for Love, Martin, and Turiaf. The Cavs keep Varejao as the starting center and hope he can stay healthy for the playoffs.

Ramona Shelburne (who is fast moving up my reliable list) is now saying that Melo's agent says no decision as of yet.

I know it's in vogue for leagues to do this, but I hate these "grace periods" of free agency where people can talk but can't sign.

A Cleveland trade for Love would HAVE to be Wiggins plus stuff, right? I can't see how it can be anything else. First round picks from a team with LeBron and Love on it are pretty near worthless.

I still think LeBron has already worked out his new contract with Miami and is trolling Cleveland because he hates Dan Gilbert that much, though. I'm staying on that ship 'til it sinks.

Whatever the result of all this, there will be an element of collective schadenfreude for whomever James spurns. Either he screws over Riley and Miami fans or he masterfully trolls Gilbert. It's a no lose situation!

I know they would have to rearrange some other pieces due to his new contract, but might Boston be interested in Bradley for Waiters?
   2031. kpelton Posted: July 09, 2014 at 05:27 PM (#4747370)
I'm still pretty sure that doesn't provide the Cavs (or anyone they trade Haywood to) any salary relief this year. Only if he's traded next offseason. He's still only worth $2.2M in a trade this offseason.

Yeah. Haywood also can't be aggregated in a trade for two months. Not sure if there's a way around that in a Love trade, but worth noting the biggest reason for Cleveland to throw in players is not to add more value for the Timberwolves, it's to create enough outgoing salary to make a trade legal.
2032. Tom Cervo, backup catcher Posted: July 09, 2014 at 05:27 PM (#4747371)
Agreed. For many other teams, he probably isn't worth the money he's being offered, but for the Jazz he's the best player they have a chance at signing, so there's not a better use of their cap space. Last year they paid big money for the ghost of Richard Jefferson and the rotting corpse of Andris Beidrins just to clear the cap floor.

I also think last years drop in his percentages will improve. He was being forced to create way more offense than he's capable of. He was better when the Jazz had Millsap and Big Al to shoulder some of the scoring load, so if Exum turns out to be the real deal or if any of the Kanter/Favors/Burke/Burks group takes a step forward, Hayward could return to previous form. It's obviously nowhere near a lock that any of that is going to happen of course, but all those guys are young enough that I don't think it's an extreme longshot, either.

And Quin Snyder can't possibly be as incompetant as Tyrone Corbin, so there's that, too.

Agreed all around. Snyder is preaching up-tempo offense, which the Jazz should have been doing all last year, and that should play into Hayward's strengths too. And if the Jazz want to see Favors continue to develop and Kanter to develop, they need some spacing.

Also:
Tony Jones ?@Tjonessltrib 15m
Even with the expected Gordon Hayward resigning, the jazz would be two million UNDER the salary cap floor

2027, so you think the Wolves wouldn't insist on Waiters as well? As a Wolves fan would you prefer him to Thompson?

Would Wade consider leaving if LBJ/Bosh go? Does them leaving mean he gets a max deal from the Heat?

We'll never know.
   2035. andrewberg Posted: July 09, 2014 at 05:31 PM (#4747381)
I think Waiters > Thompson, but I would also understand the desire to get a 4 in return if it is one or the other.
2036. PASTE Thinks This Trout Kid Might Be OK (Zeth) Posted: July 09, 2014 at 05:36 PM (#4747386)
The desire to get a 4 in return would make sense if the team had solid talent at other positions. This team does not. It should acquire the most talented player(s) possible and go from there.

If those running the team don't understand they don't have any talent elsewhere, well, that might go a ways toward explaining why their first round pick exclaimed "oh #### me" when he got the news.

Final, official Nets luxury tax payment from last season according to sources: $90.57 million.

Tim Bontemps
Factoring that in, the 2013-14 total Nets payout should come in right around $193.5 million in combined payroll and luxury tax commitments.

At least they won a series...

There's no way Cleveland can keep all these guys under roster. They're taking in $24M in salary with Love, Martin, Turiaf, and you've only given up Wiggins ($5.5M) and Thompson ($4.1M). Haywood only counts for $2.2M against the cap this offseason. And they'll have to clear out even more salary if they want to add Miller.

Regarding the question earlier in thread, I assumed the word would leak out after James' meeting with Riley, but my source actually said that predicting the timing of some announcement was a 'fool's errand'. He said this morning that he guessed it would be in 24-48 hours, but just a guess. James Inc has to get all the ducks in a row with Nike and social media etc etc before an official announcement. My guy reaffirmed his initial call of Lebron to Cavs just in the last couple of hours, saying it was a done deal well before the Riley meeting.

My own guess would be sometime tomorrow evening. And I still think James to Cavs is a done deal. No idea on any other potential deals, but sounds like Ray Allen is going wherever Lebron goes.

Whatever the Cavs or Cavs fans think, I don't think they are getting Love without throwing Wiggins in...and if I were them, I'd throw him in.
