Should the players receive all the credit/blame for on-court defensive performance or should some of it lie exclusively with the org? (Same q for offense.)

demarcus cousins has been fined 20K for verbally abusing an official.
and he has been suspended one game for "punching" patrick beverly.

no word yet on whether beverly has been disciplined for flopping, or whether the official has been reprimanded for blowing the original call on cousins.

Der-k, thanks for the breaking madden link. It has given me so so so much joy and so many stifled laughs over the last 24 hours.

I would argue more on defense than offense. Speaking of which, coaching RAPM is back ... and not really a great fit with conventional wisdom, to put it mildly.

BB-ref added shooting % by distance for '00-'01 on.

Ahh they've also added 2013-14 On/Off and Lineup data since I last checked! Some of the most surprising On/Off splits from my cursory review:

Good Offense: Devin Harris (+13.5; 124.3 ORtg*) and Brandan Wright (+9.9; 120.0 ORtg). Maybe these guys should see the court more often. The Mavs are +15.8 net when they're on the floor together.
Bad Offense: Amar'e Stoudemire (-8.8; 101.7 ORtg). It's well-known that his defense isn't great, but his offensive on/off is actually worse this year.

Good Defense: Pero Antic (-9.1; 100.0 DRtg) and Nate Robinson (-9.1; 103.6 DRtg). Antic is a floor-spacer and Nate is a scorer, but who knew they could be such good defenders? Either Thibs dust had a lasting effect on Nate or Denver's starters are so poor defensively that every bench player looks good by comparison. Darrell Arthur, Andre Miller, and Evan Fournier also have great splits.
Bad Defense: LeBron James (+7.0; 109.7 DRtg). The Heat have had an excellent defense this year when LeBron is on the bench and approximately the worst defense in the league with him on the floor. Obviously his offense makes up for it and he's been saving energy defensively, but this is unexpected.

*The best team ORtg is 112.6 (Portland) and the worst is 98.9 (Philly).
**The best team DRtg is 96.5 (Indy) and the worst is 109.6 (Milwaukee).

In a way, that makes me think the Heat are even bigger favorites. If you think that LeBron and that he still can be an elite defender when he wants to be, an already really good defensive team could be even better.

Felton and Hardaway Jr. tonight:

65 MP
3/22 FG
0/10 3P
5 AST 3 TO
combined +/- = -65

Anthony was 11/20 from the floor and had a 29/7 with a -22; Chandler was 6/9 on FGs and 7/8 from the line, for a 19/16, and had a -6 in a game NY lost by 26.

[710] In my 21 years as a Knicks fan, Tim Hardaway Jr. is the worst perimeter defender I've ever seen. So, this year has been incredible in the sense that I've been given the opportunity to watch both him and Bargnani work. Bargnani is a solid to good post defender, but he's the worst help defender I've ever seen. Amar'e is also on the short list of worst defenders I've ever seen as is this year's version of Ray Felton. The lineups that feature THJ and Amar'e have been bad, who woulda thought, but that hasn't stopped Woodson from using them because the East is big man, bad defense is a big part of what we do here, he's not gonna kick them to the curb and he's not sure about some of that stats stuff.

Mike Woodson is an awful, awful coach. Stubborn and clueless is a bad combination.

Just caught a little of the Miami - NY game, but the one that stood out to me on defense was Tyson Chandler. Everybody knows those other guys can't play D, but the Heat could just blow by Chandler as if he was a statue. Looks like he's lost a ton of quickness since he was the defensive monster for Dallas.

Damn, LeBron got a bad-ass mask. Certainly an improvement on the bulky, clear plastic things you used to see guys wear.

Caron opted for OKC over Miami.
   717. andrewberg Posted: February 28, 2014 at 02:48 PM (#4664187)
My gut reaction is that Butler will help with OKC's questionable wing depth and would have helped give Miami another alternative to Battier or Allen if they do not start playing better. His numbers the last couple of years have been atrocious. One could argue that he was coming off of an injury and now he is dealing with a terrible team.

All indications are that Jimmer is coming to the Bulls when he clears waivers tomorrow. I think that a good fit for him, and he could actually help the Bulls this year. Expectations are obviously low, but he could even have a place on the team after this year.

I have no idea the timeframe, but since Tim Floyd is at the very bottom it passes the smell test for me.

Well, my knowledge of Jimmer is restricted to his time in college, and my knowledge of Thibs is restricted to the personality caricature I've drawn based on this thread, so my impression of the two was that Jimmer is an under-sized gunner with no real defensive ability and Thibs is a psychotically intense man who demands every one of his guys play with ferocious defensive intensity and discipline on every play.

They made good use of Nate Robinson last year (who I think is an underrated defender, but by no means good) and Augustin this year... Thibs can work with this guy.

Jimmer is useful - he's over 40% from three on his career and maintains a high usage rate with all the shooting he does. Unfortunately, he's still a two in the body of a point guard, a slow unathletic one at that - but you can hide him v. some matchups + they've got other guys who can create that they can pair him with. (Actually, pairing him with Hinrich would work well against teams that don't want to run.)

Jimmer is much, much worse than Nate Rob.

I mean, you want to believe that he is actually a 45%+ 3p shooter, then maybe he's worth it, but he's replacement level in most other levels of his game.

Definitely - but I was citing a recent undersized gunner whose devotion to defense has been questioned.

I don't - but his career mark of a hair over 40% is certainly credible. And, though you don't want him as your primary playmaker, he's a solid #2 option in that regard for an offense. Plus he's only 24.
He's not good, but he's useful.

Side note: he takes surprisingly few corner threes for a guy with his touch from deep. (This year, he's 8-for-9.) Yeah, he's a high usage guy and plays PG sometimes, both of which would limit his time there, but still...

The Lakers give up 65 at halftime. You know it's bad when Reggie Evans is calling for the ball.

Suns beat the Pellies going smallball: Ish Smith, Dragic, G. Green and the Morri. Hornacek, in his own way, is just as much fun to watch as the rest of the team, if getting excited about lineups and sidelines OOB plays is your thing.

Goran w/40; a career high for the second time in three games.

the Morri

No, this won't do. Only words ending in "-us" get pluralized as "-i".

Greek words that end in "-is", like crisis, diagnosis, synthesis, etc. get pluralized as "-es".

The Morres are Phoenix's beloved superstars.
   732. Gold Star - just Gold Star Posted: March 01, 2014 at 12:18 PM (#4664454)
So if we see just one of them, we can say, "That's a Morre?"

C'mon, NBA - let LeBron wear the black mask! It looks so bad a$$!

Battier said it best: "Only LeBron can make breaking your nose look cool."

Kyrie Irving went through the same thing year before last I believe. The NBA can be so silly sometimes.
   735. robinred Posted: March 01, 2014 at 08:21 PM (#4664684)
I usually ignore stuff like this, but I am not seeing how James' mask being black creates some kind of image problem that requires league attention.

But it is consistent--Irving did have a black one, and so did Bryant, and they were asked/told to switch. The Heat are apparently selling t-shirts with pictures of James in the mask.

Heat's online team shop apparently no longer selling T-shirts that feature James wearing the black mask from Thursday.

Basketball would be smart to really have a minor league system or even something close to what Cuban described. would help the players become better at the game with out the huge nba contract they get if drafted. and well he is right that there is no point to the college basketball one and done

But the NBA has it great. They have a developmental league in the NCAA...and don't pay any of the costs.
