OT - NBA thread (pre-season)

I estimate only 10-12 Primates care about baseball, and this thread is the only thing keeping this site alive.

Of all of the basketball players in the world, he is certainly one of them.

considering the vast amount of energy he conserves on both ends of the floor, i'll be disappointed if tharris plays less than 43 minutes per game this season.

I'm sure they measured him accurately, but Grant Williams looks SG-sized out there.

Also, I want Towns to pick that weak #### out.

But, 16/9/4 is pretty nice ... for the first half.

I always find it amusing when a professional athlete has a game where I can smile smugly and honestly say, "I could've done that." (and for a lot less money!).

Tony Snell accumulating zero stats except fouls is still probably more valuable than you though, because the other team at least has to try to defend him and play 5-on-5.

In baseball it's a different story.

He was +9, which, I don't know, but it definitely is something to think about.

3/21 outside the paint; tharris on pace for 40 minutes and 8 points; too much korkmas; not enough burke; mike scott gets a standing ovation despite (because of?) punching that eagles fan about a month ago; marcus smart should get punched in the throat by someone every game, just on general principle.

Did anyone want coach's challenges in the NBA? Whose terrible idea was this?

I see that Wiggins has cut his hair. I was no fan of the cornrows -- he looked totally righteous when he picked that #### out -- but the high 'n tight is a good look for him. There, let nobody tell you that I've never said anything nice about Wiggins.

I have been trying to figure this out. It's annoying with almost no real upside in its current form.

A bad idea badly implemented. Blech. Of course, I am 100% anti-replay in any form.

Refs in the Sixers-Celtics game have correctly determined we’ve tuned in to watch them. It’s taken like 30 minutes to play half a quarter.
   724. SteveF Posted: October 23, 2019 at 09:32 PM (#5893686)
There have been a lot of fouls, but frankly they could have called even more. Both teams are a way off from mid-season form.

[727] That is some All-Star level defense by the Cavs there (by which I mean the kind of defense that gets played in the All-Star Game).

[725] If the Horcats can shoot 52 percent from three for the season, they just might stay out of the lottery (emphasis on might).

they are godawful.

i think marcus smart flopped into half a dozen fouls in the 3rd quarter.

the league needs to make people like him wear a different colored jersey, so that refs can learn to ignore any contact involving them.

the philly defense is doing an especially great job at the foul line.

Doncic has an efficient 32 points in 28 minutes through 3. Dallas up by 23. Gonna see a lot of this against the Wizards this year.

I don't want to overreact, but I'm watching some Fultz highlights and Cleveland may have the worst defense of all time.

- Spida played exactly how the Jazz need him to play; attacking the rim, taking efficient shots, etc (although expecting 12 boards a game is probably getting a bit greedy).

- Conley...did not. That's gotta be on the short list for the worst debut ever for a big name acquisition, no?

- Bogdanovic scared me early by getting carried off in the 2nd after rolling his ankle, but he returned and finished with 16 pts. All is good.

- Royce O'Neal is becoming a player.

- Surprisingly good debut from Mudiay..

Not a super impressive win overall, but I'll take it considering Conley's 1/16 and the teams 6/24 from deep.

Yes, but Kemba didn't exactly blow him away last night.
   741. spivey Posted: October 24, 2019 at 09:10 AM (#5893872)
I like Kemba, and he got off to a great start last year and I had maybe mentally moved him up a tier of players. But he wasn't great in the second half, and I see his overall numbers are back in line with the previous 4 years. I need to mentally drop him back that tier I gave him. I guess that's just what he is. Which is a good player, but probably a bit of a reach as a max.

Eh I think he's an obvious max guy, there's just not piles of surplus value or whatever, like you get with the top 10 or so players. He didn't get the supermax offer, for instance, which I think everyone (including him, it seems) understood.

Singularly Wigginsian performance from Andrew Wiggins last night: 36 minutes, plus/minus of -26! In a game they won by 1 in overtime. So in the 17 non-Wiggins minutes, the Wolves were plus 27. Amazing.

And in the actually impressive debut category, Kyrie went off (though he of course missed the potential game-winner): 50 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists, 0 turnover, +18 in only 38 minutes.

Yes, but Kemba didn't exactly blow him away last night.

it's definitely worth noting that kemba had to play against three of the better perimeter defenders in the league. i might be biased, but i think most PGs are going to have trouble against ben simmons, josh richardson and matisse thybulle.

Not to mention a very inefficient 21 points, to go along with 0 assists, 0 steals, and 0 blocks. Classic Wiggins.

Oh yeah I'm very happy to have Kemba on the Celtics, I think he'll be great. The Sixers are clearly going to be one of the best defensive teams this year.

Random side note from last night: I love, love, LOVE the fact that they no longer count the rip-through as a shooting foul (CP3 did it to the Jazz at least twice last night), and that they no longer consider the "fling the ball at the hoop as soon as you hear the whistle" move as continuation (Paul and Mitchell both tried this to no avail). Awarding free throws for that nonsense was a huge blight on a game a few years ago, IMO.

Charlotte has won a game! One down, 9 to go.

Variance!

Mark Strotman @markstrot

On 39 of the Hornets' 44 3-pointers last night, the Bulls' closest defender was at least 4 feet away (the NBA considers that "open"). They shot 51% on those attempts.

20 of those were "wide open," meaning the closest defender was 6+ feet away.

...and terrible defense. Which is what I'd expect for the Bulls. Lauri was great (but 1 for 7 on 3s), but Porter and Lavine less so. But overall, the offense was much more fun and modern that last year, which is really all I can expect.

At what point do the Wolves just... stop playing Wiggins?

They're a better team without him. He makes a decent team worse. He should never be allowed to be on the floor at the same time as Towns.

I get that if they still harbor hopes of some sucker taking his hideous contract off their hands, they need to let him play and hope he has a hot month. But on the other hand, every game Wiggins plays 30+ minutes is going to push Towns another inch closer to blowing up and demanding a trade. Besides the fact that, again, Wiggins just makes the team worse.

Wiggins was so bad last night. The funny thing is that he had a few possessions late in the 4th and in OT where he either operated a PNR or just blew by a defender for an easy finish in the paint. He CAN do that. Yet he insists on shooting a crapton of contested 20 footers. I will never understand it.

Teague was a disaster last night, too. He was already at an athletic deficit at the position and he's coming off ankle surgery. He might have just slipped below the threshold of playable on defense. I feel bad for him- the mind is willing but the body isn't able.

With Covington, Okogie, and Graham, it seems like the Wolves have three good perimeter defenders for the first time in ages. As PASTE mentioned, they might actually be an intersting team if they stopped playing Wiggins and made Teague a backup.

I just don't understand how Jeff Teague, who is a very good professional basketball player, can be so bad at post entry passes.

I made a Wolves-specific prediction contest for a few of my friends. If anyone here wants to participate, here are the questions:

1. Top 3 finishers in total minutes played (5 points each)

2. Total wins (10 points for exact, subtract 1 for each game off)

3. Will Towns make an All-NBA team, y/n (10 points).

4. Total team 3PA, o/u 2850 (10 points).

5. Andrew Wiggins o/u: FG% .435 and o/u ppg 19.4 (5 points each- need 2 answers).

6. Jeff Teague games started for Minnesota (10 points for exact, subtract 1 for each game off).

7. League rank in Defensive Rating (10 points for exact, subtract 1 for each rank off)

8. Josh Okogie made 3s: 0-50; 51-80; 81-110; 111+ (5 points).

9. Who will finish the year with the most points: Jake Layman, Noah Vonleh, Jordan Bell, Shabazz Napier, Treveon Graham (5 points).

10. Robert Covington o/u total steals+blocks 185 (5 points).

11. Will the team acquire a player during the season who makes >$10mm in 19/20 y/n? (5 points)

12. Will Jarret Culver make All-Rookie first team, y/n? (5 points)

13. Tiebreaker: Full season per game point differential (points scored – points allowed/g).
