OT: New Season August 2017 Soccer Thread

Are you ready for some futbol?

EFL - August 4 (that’s today!).  Note that ESPN has taken over the broadcast rights from BeIN and is going to make most games available on ESPN3 including today’s Sunderland loss to Derby County.
EPL - August 11 (Arsenal-Leicester). Also 8/20 is Spurs-Chelsea, that’s a big big game early.
La Liga - August 18
Bundesliga - August 18 (Bayern-Bayer Leverkusen)
Serie A - August 19 (Juventus-Cagliari)
Champions League Playoffs - August 15 - The best of the bunch look to be Liverpool-Hoffenheim, Nice-Napoli and CSKA Moscow-Young Boys
Europa League - August 17 - Everton get Hajduk Split but generally I won’t pretend to be knowledgeable about the teams here.
Also assorted Community Shield type things and a bunch of World Cup Qualifiers get rolling on August 31.  This is the penultimate break before the end of qualifying for most places so these are likely to be some very big games (US-Costa Rica September 1).  An

Moggy Cattermole and Charlie Adam say hi!

I will agree these designations are subjective. Ryan Shawcross, that Baby Huey looking mofo, is up there, too.

I don't know that anyone ... knows.

Maybe a Barkley-like substance, if that falls through?

Seems strange that Liverpool and Palace haven't sorted out the Sakho deal yet.

The former wants him gone, the latter wants him in, both will consider it bad business if the window closes as is and they're only 5 million or so apart ...

Sky reporting Arsenal have bid 92 million pounds sterling for Lemar. Holy Toledo!

I've always contended that in the past five years, Arsenal has had plenty of money, but the old economics professor didn't like spending it. He and Ferguson couldn't adapt to all these other teams being willing and able to spend as much or more than them.

Up until Roman bought Chelsea, the only teams capable of outspending them were Madrid, Barca and Bayern - probably the Milan clubs and Juventus too. Then Roman came, Thaskin sold to Abu Dhabi, Qatar bought PSG then you add those several years of Russian overexuberance followed by the Chinese Insanity.

Even in this current "crisis" state, I think French players would rather play for Arsene than go to Liverpool. Of course there is no Champions League... I have no knowledge of Lemar, but I would imagine Gunner fans would prefer him on the left than Welbeck when and if Alexis goes.

Sanchez is staying at Arsenal because Arsenal don't have time to agree to terms with Lemar.
   410. J. Sosa Posted: August 31, 2017 at 11:52 AM (#5524039)
Telegraph reporter said Arsenal bid of 90+ was accepted for Lemar. But a few minutes ago Guardian reporter said Arsenal indicated that there was not enough time to get a deal done and Sanchez is staying.

*Shakes Magic 8 Ball*

Not enough time=Lemar wouldn't agree to come?

Who knows. Where is the tylenol.

Wenger's continual war against the market is weird for someone educated in economics. The market is the market. You can shake your fist at the price of a candybar all you want, the price ain't going to change.

Lemar is with the French national team so there probably just isn't time to negotiate wages and image rights and all that stuff. That Arsenal hadn't contacted him previous to today is a weird one. They should have had the parameters for an agreement with the player in place.
   413. J. Sosa Posted: August 31, 2017 at 12:01 PM (#5524049)
Yeah, the part that baffled me was the medical. How were they planning on getting that done? It never made sense to me, but I'm not super thrilled at the prospect of getting gazumped.

Depending on who you believe, a medical team from Liverpool was given permission to do a medical yesterday on Lemar just in case.

We'll see. I don't think Liverpool will go as high as Arsenal did. Monaco may or may not be adding Di Maria as part of the Mbappe deal which might be pertinent.

Gomes was good on Fifa. That's all I got.

I think Liverpool is done. Sigh. Center back depth is evidently going to be Klavan and Gomez. Bold.

All a bit slow in the north east; way things are going Mike Ashley will end the day having reduced Newcastle’s wage bill - almost certainly leaving it lower than last season in the Championship – and spending only around £11.5m net this summer. Do not expect Rafa Benitez to be impressed ...

Quite the vote of confidence from Ashley, there ... is he betting that Benitez is a wizard? Banking on the parachute payments if he isn't?

What an unmitigated #### he seems ... he lucks into a world class coach who falls in love with the fans, sticks it through relegation to lead them back to the PL ... and then hands him scraps to keep them up.

Which, I suppose, sounds more ominous that I guess it will be ... the only way he plays in 60% of Spurs matches ... is if he plays well enough to warrant playing in 60% of Spurs matches.

Arsenal after Adrien Rabiot now. That might work as PSG try to trim the squad. Obviously they can't bully PSG with a big fee so PSG will have to want to sell. He'd be a good signing, I think.

The internet does not like Gomes. Seeing a lot of American Spurs fans complaining about Tottenham's window which I think is pretty dumb. First, none of them know how good Sanchez or Foyth will be. Second, Aurier is a very good player. Thirdly, is Dele Alli still a Spur? Yes. Is Harry Kane? Yes. Is Christian Eriksen? Yes. Is Danny Rose? Yes? Alderweireld? Yes. Etc etc etc. 5 years ago the mega bastard clubs would have picked us clean if we'd come in second with the league's best GD. Not an A+ window but pretty solid.

That's a fair assessment.

Spurs still need pace up top on the on the wings, but a Rose & Aurier pairing should be a very strong Poch-minded pairing. I wish Aurier had been in the squad for the 1st three matches, but that seems to have been an issue with his conviction holding up the work permit, rather than a lack of conviction in the intent to sign him.

Now, Llorente in and Janssen out on a loan and this is a very solid window.

With Spurs close on Gomes, Chelsea close on Drinkwater and Arsenal finished for the day, it looks like Everton are going to be stuck with Ross Barkley. For now. Still 3 and half hours to go.
   433. I am going to be Frank Posted: August 31, 2017 at 02:24 PM (#5524196)
I assume Madonna's son could be eligible to play for England or the US. Although I doubt she'd let him play for the US with her weird English accent thing she has going.

Mahrez played mainly high on the right for Lester and would cut in on his left. He and Hazard will be difficult to cover coming inside from the flanks. Mahrez is also left-footed, which is pretty rare in Chelsea's squad - only Alonso is left footed among their outfield regulars.
   434. Count Vorror Rairol Mencoon (CoB) Posted: August 31, 2017 at 02:24 PM (#5524197)
From the Graun:

Danny Drinkwater to Chelsea is edging towards agreement between the clubs. Chelsea are basically having to push their offers up and up nearer the original £35m asking price. But the likelihood is they will reach an agreement.

We're close to reaching peak O.o? ... right?

Maybe not sexy, but I think it's a good signing for a 2nd striker for Spurs.

Signing Janssen seemed a good idea at the time, but I think it wasn't right in retrospect.

Harry Kane is a greedy bastard (in the best way), he wants to play every bloody game and every bloody minute. Why not, he's gunning for PL Golden Boot.

Poch also tends to be very late with his subs, especially if Spurs are winning (and if they're not, he's not taking Kane off).

There just aren't the minutes for a young striker to develop at Spurs.

Until January when he's actually fit. This one is a little shittier, too, because it costs Everton cash as well as costing Chelsea the player. I guess Barkley really wants to go to Spurs. It's a strange one. Pochettino is awesome but Conte is no slouch. I just hope it doesn't poison our relationship with Everton.

A little more Spurs news and then I'm turning the window off. Marcus Edwards refused loan offers because he wants to fight his way into the first team. I think he's good enough to be cover for Eriksen right now, so good lad. And Spurs U23's beat West Ham's U23's today 7-2 in a game in which they conceded 4 penalties to the Hammers. That must have been an odd game.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand right on schedule:

Rafael Benítez has lost virtually all trust in Mike Ashley’s regime at Newcastle United and, no longer regarding his job as a long-term project, would be receptive to alternative offers of employment at similarly sized Premier League clubs.

Although Newcastle’s manager will not walk out in the wake of a disastrous transfer window, Benítez is angry, deeply frustrated and ready to contemplate life away from Tyneside.

Honestly, who in the world would want the Newcastle job when Rafa leaves ...

A lot of the reporting I've read is consistent that Everton would only deal with Chelsea for Barkley but Barkley has his heart set on going to Tottenham. That can all change by January, of course, and he can still end up at Chelsea, though with Chelsea signing Drinkwater I'm not sure why they would. Maybe Conte sees him as cover for Hazard instead of as a deeper lying CM the way Pochettino does? My completely uninformed guess at what happened is Tottenham let him know they'd come in again for him in January once the Gomes deal fell apart and, since he'll basically be rehabbing until then, he decided to wait. I made the mistake of watching ESPNFC's little bit on this transfer featuring Gab Marcotti and some other doofus and, my god, I will never click on an ESPNFC video link again. As Charles Barkley would say, Turrible, Ernie. What is Gab Marcotti's purpose? I do not understand.

I'm sorry to have missed the transfer day minute by minute here at Spurs Think Factory, but I did want to note that this just made me laugh. It was an angry laugh, but a laugh nonetheless.

Also the nature of the deadline is such madness that I actually found myself hoping City would have closed the deal with Evans. What's wrong with me.

You know, I hear/read people saying good things about him, but he always seems like a blowhard to me, with a self-assuredness that is a major turnoff.

One way to describe him would be "he's Barry Glendenning, with no sense of humor and without a self-deprecating streak," but YMMV (I'm amused by Glendenning; hate Marcotti).

RANT: Of course, Georgia v Ireland tomorrow is not on ESPN3, but instead of !@#%ing FS2, which I don't get and can't get because I won't pay Fox for it's stupid web package. !@#$

Willian went somewhere (to Chelsea, instead of Spurs).

Let's not leave out my favorite Chelsea song about this (can be heard about 15x at every Chelsea match)
‘‘The shits from Spurs, They bought his flight!
But Will.I.An, he saw the light!
He got a call from Abramovich,
And off he went to Stamford Bridge!
He hates Tottenham! He hates Tottenham! He hates Tottenham! And He hates Tottenham!’’

Singing this in my head right now is a little therapeutic after getting gazzumped for Llortente, who I think will be great for you.

I know none of you care, but I did say I was going to post my Premier League prediction after the transfer window closes, so here are my top 7.

City
United
Spurs
Chelsea
Liverpool
Everton
Arsenal

I have no idea 8-17, so I'm going to skip and say Newcastle, Brighton and Hove Albion and Bournemouth go down.

Well, *I* like the cut of your jib, Frank ... because I was also waiting for the window to close before posting my predictions ... and almost in the exact same manner! (European places and relegation and screw the rest)

United
City
Spurs
Liverpool
Chelsea
Everton
Arsenal
.

Palace
Newcastle
Brighton

The only people hammering Ream and Cameron worse than Darke and Twellman are Urena and Ruiz. They've been terrible so far.

Bad performance by pretty much everyone tonight. There's enough quality in the team to still give them some chances even when things aren't clicking, and with slightly different luck this could be a draw. But all things considered, you can't play this poorly against a team as good as Costa Rica and expect to get anything from the game.
   480. Count Vorror Rairol Mencoon (CoB) Posted: September 01, 2017 at 08:46 PM (#5525212)
Truth be told ... I wouldn't mind them failing to make it to Russia 2018.

Boy would *that* #### the ratings here in the states ... delicious.

Boy would *that* #### the ratings here in the states ... delicious.

Yep, given my feelings about the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, I have a hard time getting too worked up about the US team's qualification chances.

If that was a Klinsmann performance people would be losing their ####. That was awful.

I want them to qualify so I'm not real happy. They still have Panama and T&T so there is a path. Winning Tuesday would be huge of course but a draw might be enough if we can take care of business those last two.

interested in any analysis off the results tomorrow from the Ireland group results

is that one of the more complicated Europe groups?

as always, I'll hang up and wait for your response
   485. Stevey Posted: September 01, 2017 at 11:38 PM (#5525280)
Ireland is slightly favored to take all three points tomorrow in Georgia. Doing so would go a long way towards qualification, but the big match for them is in May, when they host Serbia. Winner there takes command of the group. They'd also like to see Wales and Austria drop a couple points to at least ensure the second place finish and a playoff. Those two go tomorrow with the loser all but out.
   486. Textbook Editor Posted: September 02, 2017 at 11:34 PM (#5525496)
#485 - Didn't quite work out for the Republic.
#484 - It is one of the more complicated groups, and would become a real scrum should Ireland beat Serbia on Tuesday.

So Ireland have Serbia and Moldova at home and Wales away. They're on 13 points with a GD of 4

Wales have Moldova away, Georgia away, Ireland at home. They're on 11 points with a GD of 5.

Austria could, with 3 wins (Georgia, Serbia, @Moldova) get to 17 points with a + GD, but that's a tall task.

It's likely (but not certain) that Wales takes at least 6 points from its last 3 games (wins at Moldova and Georgia), taking it to 17 points ahead of the final game against Ireland.

Ireland should have at least 3 points banked before the final game (win over Moldova), which would give them 16 going into the final game against Wales, which would leave them having to win to get a playoff spot. (I'm not at all sure they can beat Serbia, even at home, but 1 point would be very useful).

Serbia does have 3 tricky fixtures left: (@Ireland, @Austria, Georgia), and I suppose it's possible they'll drop points, but sitting on 15 points they're in good shape. Beat Ireland and they only need to win one of the two remaining games to win the group regardless of results elsewhere... But of course if they lose to Ireland... Well, then it gets a bit thornier for them (especially if Wales beats Moldova).

So while it's not a MUST WIN match, Ireland beating Serbia would go a long way to getting them into at least the playoffs.

A realistic (though, in my mind, not very likely) scenario going into the last game is:

Ireland: WIN over Serbia WIN over Moldova; 19 points going into last game
Wales: WIN over Moldova, WIN over Georgia, 17 points going into last game
Serbia: LOSE to Ireland, LOSE to Austria, 15 points going into last game
Austria: WIN over Georgia, WIN over Serbia, 14 points going into last game

In those scenarios, Ireland would at least be guaranteed a playoff spot, but that would be it (though a draw vs. Wales would get them top of the group). Wales could lose to Ireland and miss out completely, win and win the group, draw and possibly lose out to Serbia on GD. Austria would need help and GD to go their way to make a playoff, and Serbia could do no better than a playoff spot, even if they win.

A win today would have made everything much easier for Ireland in the long run. Sigh.

Dier's dagger draws England level with Slovakia.
   489. Textbook Editor Posted: September 05, 2017 at 01:36 AM (#5526068)
So these things are true:

--If Ireland win out (Serbia, Moldova, @Wales), they win the group.

--If Ireland draw or lose vs. Serbia and beat Moldova, and Wales wins its next 2 fixtures (Moldova, Georgia), the last round game (Ireland @ Wales) probably becomes a game to determine who finishes 2nd in the group (though this naturally depends on how Serbia's game against Austria goes).

--If Scotland win out (Slovenia, Slovakia; don't recall which one is the home match), they'll finish in a playoff spot.

--Northern Ireland is assured of at worst a playoff spot.

The bad news: Sweden, Portugal, Italy, Bosnia-Herzegovenia, and Croatia are all in playoff slots at the moment (though Iceland could pip Croatia)... And while it's not 100% clear the playoff draw would be seeded by UEFA coefficient, it almost certainly would be... Which means almost certainly (should they make it to a playoff) that Ireland, Northern Ireland & Scotland would face a pretty formidable team. I suppose you want to avoid Portugal/Italy if at all possible but the other 3 would be pretty tough roads as well.

Ireland should really, really try to win their group. If they win tomorrow, I actually think they have a really good shot at it. But that's a big if...

I see where La Liga has complained that state sponsored clubs will be the death of us all. Ah sweet salty tears of infinite sadness. I draw two things from this.

1. La Liga poobahs lack any kind of self awareness or shame.

2. Messi really is going to City.
   491. Shooty would run in but these bone spurs hurt! Posted: September 05, 2017 at 07:31 AM (#5526077)
Dele Alli's Johnny Cash moment is, I'm assuming, the only good thing to come from the Mass Murderer's Break. I really enjoy Dele Alli.

Seems more and more likely. If Pele can leave Santos then Messi can leave Barcelona, I guess.

Messi going to City on a free would be... a hell of a thing
   494. I am going to be Frank Posted: September 05, 2017 at 04:10 PM (#5526372)
Is Messi's only option City? Obviously he has played for Pep, so presumably he's comfortable with that. Why not PSG, Chelsea or United? I don't see Bayern paying his salary.

Obviously, it's a LONG way away, but the US failing to make WC 2018 as a result of losing a play-in game to ... Syria ... would be all sorts of hilarious.
   497. sardonic Posted: September 05, 2017 at 07:22 PM (#5526574)
The US just doesn't look that good. Hopefully we can get Pulisic some help for the 2022 cycle.

Can't say the US even deserved a point there. Their path to 2018 seems pretty clear now, but this isn't a very interesting or dangerous team.
