Flip for ease.
   1502. Langer Monk Posted: September 22, 2013 at 11:22 PM (#4547977)
Kessel or Clarkson? Which one gets the longer suspension? (Clarkson left the bench).
   1503. ursus arctos Posted: September 22, 2013 at 11:58 PM (#4547983)
Clarkson gets an automatic ten games. Kessel's won't be that long.
   1504. Langer Monk Posted: September 23, 2013 at 12:02 AM (#4547985)
Almost certainly not, but it's fun to think about. He was hacking at Scott like a lumberjack.
   1505. ursus arctos Posted: September 23, 2013 at 12:06 AM (#4547987)
With the spear thrown in at the end for good measure.
   1506. zack Posted: September 23, 2013 at 12:29 AM (#4547995)
What the #### was Scott doing throwing a punch at a real player like Kessel? Isn't he obligated only to fight his own kind? I don't blame Kessel at all, though the whack and spear after Scott's already wrapped up are shitty.

I like how the announcers' reaction to the goalie fight is just to laugh.
   1507. Langer Monk Posted: September 23, 2013 at 09:06 AM (#4548057)
I only saw the clips, obviously, and not the whole game, and then the post-game interviews. Supposedly after the usual shenanigans, Buffalo put Scott out on the ice, and Carlyle said he sent out Kessel's line to 'diffuse' the situation - yeah, brilliant move, it's the preseason. Scott's going to fight someone.

That's why fighting should never go away completely, by the way, in my opinion. The stick swinging would be a replacement, which is way worse. At least, usually, two guys square off.

Kessel said Scott told him he was going to jump him - I don't which Leaf defensemen were on the ice, but one of them should have lined up on the right instead of Kessel if that was said. But it's Toronto, I don't like them - more suspensions!

And that's because goalies fighting is funny.

Oh, Canada. Why. WHHYYYYYYY. Thanks for making the hideous US jerseys look good, though.

Any worthwhile hockey podcasts out there?

Hawks lost Stanton to waivers, no word yet as to the gold.

Kessel extension $8M/yr, 8 years. Hysterical.

Happy Opening Day.

I wonder if--this would apply to all sports, not just hockey--after a brief reprieve of sanity, we're about to plunge back into another period of hideously ugly uniforms.

Retro can't last forever.

How the #### is it October already. Does anyone know if Gamecenter live (the online out-of-market thing) has a free preview like center ice (the TV package) does? I don't have cable TV this year.
   1515. Langer Monk Posted: October 01, 2013 at 10:48 AM (#4555717)
I am looking forward to using Gamecenter instead of center ice this year. Because of the MSG-Dish dispute, way too many games were not in HD. It's also cheaper, I can watch it wherever, and the classic games are also great (not to mention the last 3 seasons worth of games).

Having said that, I don't think they have a free preview.

I am excited to get the season started tonight, hard to believe that it's already time o start again, seems like the finals were just a week or 2 ago. My hope is that we can keep this thread going all season and through the playoffs.

   1519. zack Posted: October 01, 2013 at 08:18 PM (#4556286)
God dammit. I went and got my parent's cable login so I could watch the game legally on NBC.com, and they don't friggin' support time warner.

To the internetz!
   1520. zack Posted: October 01, 2013 at 08:20 PM (#4556291)
The hawks really like single-digit d-men. I'm surprised Kostka got one, though.
   1521. Langer Monk Posted: October 01, 2013 at 08:20 PM (#4556292)
Hurry, you are missing Eddie O introducing everyone that works for the Blackhawks. And the sleepiest player introductions ever.

This might be slightly overdone. Maybe. A little. But they did win on the road.

Montreal's opening ceremonies were just as long. But in French.

BRANDON BOLLIG! I think that's his first regular season goal.
   1525. Langer Monk Posted: October 01, 2013 at 08:42 PM (#4556368)
I think the Caps are going to be very, very bad this season.

What was the penalty? Goalie interference?
   1527. Langer Monk Posted: October 01, 2013 at 08:59 PM (#4556424)
Think your feed a few minutes behind - Bollig's was a Roughing penalty.

The Caps really like working through Ovechkin on the backdoor.

How the hell did the 'hawks end up outshooting 18-6 in the 2nd after getting dominated for the first 7-10 minutes. Even without the 2 PP's.

Of course after they try to protect people from falling on the back of their heads, a guy falls on the front of his.

Do you think there's gonna be a market for grandfathered-visorless enforcers at some point?
   1532. Langer Monk Posted: October 01, 2013 at 10:20 PM (#4556663)
The CBC guys made the point - there's already a new goonish arms race in that Atlantic division. It's a little weird, but there they go. Something like 5 fights in that game, one where two guys took off their helmets (one had a visor). Not sure the visor part will matter a whole lot.

And I don't really have a problem with fighting, but I'm not really on board with what seems like fights just to fight. Your opponent takes a run at a skill guy or your goalie, that's a fight I can understand. The two goons just squaring up because that's what's expected? Not so much.

Speaking of looking like crap...
   1536. zack Posted: October 01, 2013 at 10:53 PM (#4556730)
SERIOUSLY?! A terrible penalty call when Sharp gets checked into the goalie, then a full rink field goal clear to make it a 5v3.

A nice easy 4-1 win. Powerplays are just exhibition time, right?

Of course they kill off a 90 second 5v3 when they couldn't do anything 4v5. I hate how deep they collapse when PKing, and I hated it last year when it was successful.
   1540. zack Posted: October 04, 2013 at 08:46 PM (#4560335)
This Sabres-Sens game has been wiiiiiiiiide open despite the lack of goals. Almost 50 combined shots by the midpoint.

Heh, and Vanek just slide tackled the puck away from someone.
   1541. zack Posted: October 06, 2013 at 10:34 AM (#4561549)
It'd be nice if you could watch games from the previous day on gamecenter live without spoiling the scores first.

There's a setting to turn off scores.

Flyers fire Laviolette. Timing's interesting. Holmgren said he didn't like the look of the team heading into the season. I think he forgot he's the GM.
   1543. DA Baracus Posted: October 07, 2013 at 12:22 PM (#4562877)
Holmgren's next, but the way this team is run he'll be fired after the trade deadline.

It's just amazing to me. If I owned a team in any sport and the GM came to me at any point in the first two-thirds or so of a season and suggested he wanted to fire the coach, I would fire the GM on the spot for even considering that, because it so reliably proves he has no plan.

edit: Assuming it's not for any obvious cause like getting arrested with two hookers and a kilo of cocaine.

Ed Snider is Al Davis circa 2003-2012. He loves Holmgren and won't fire him until it's too late and is as responsible for the Flyers being a mess as much as anyone. The Richards and Carter trades and the Bryzgalov signing were all his doing.
   1548. zack Posted: October 07, 2013 at 12:51 PM (#4562928)
On the other hand, it worked for the 'hawks when they fired Savard after four games. And his last game was a win! But then I think there was some other dynamic at play since they had already brought in Quenneville as a 'scout' the month before.

I hope Snider lives forever and so does Holmgren --their management is hilarious. Sorry Flyers fans.
   1549. Langer Monk Posted: October 07, 2013 at 03:11 PM (#4563189)
The Flyers game plan continues to be 'hit them harder'. To their credit, it works against the Pens periodically. Oh, and having no idea what to look for in a goalie.

and speaking of....the flyers hired ron hextall a few months ago, after he'd spent a few years as assistant GM with los angeles. we're really just a phonecall from homer being out and hextall being in.

the richards and carter trades were great. voracek is the best player going either way, and even taking him out of it, between couturier, schenn and simmonds, i think the flyers got the better end of it.

in fairness to the flyers goalie thing, they got it right with bobrovski before they got it wrong.

In terms of returns, yes, it's worked out very well. In terms of trading your 26 year old captain and your leading goal scorer because your owner didn't like them on a personal level, it was ####### stupid.

^ I've always dreamed of Game 7 of the Cup Finals ending on a goal like that.
   1554. Langer Monk Posted: October 08, 2013 at 12:53 PM (#4565186)
Brodeur did something similar in the 2003 finals vs the Ducks of etc etc. Didn't end up mattering, but he dropped the stick as he went to play a puck, and the puck hit the stick and went right into the net.

Meanwhile, the Devils played like the team I hoped they would be in the first two periods last night, and then played like the team I fear they are in the 3rd. I really hate Zidlicky, and Volchenkov, and know that Harrold and Salvadore are no longer any good. If they're going to suck, they should at least be playing rookies on defense.

i think laviolette had enough of them, too. and IIRC, each of them had contracts going into the next decade with full no movement clauses set to kick in that year, so if you didn't trade them then, you'd basically have committed to them as your core until 2020.

and anyway, whatever the reason why those trades were made, they've worked out just about as well as possible.

(and i don't want to hear anything about carter and richards winning the stanley cup with LA. they were the 5th and 6th best players on that team (behind brown, kopitar, doughty and quick) and they weren't going to do that with the supporting cast they had here post-pronger)

So the Leafs are having a really weird season. The metrics hate them but they are winning. Their goaltending has been outstanding and having Bernier and Reimer fighting for the number one spot seems to have lead them both to elevate their games. Their special teams have been outstanding. That said, I doubt they can be outplayed like this 5 on 5 the entire year and continue to win.
1559. Russlan is fond of Dillon Gee Posted: October 30, 2013 at 11:57 PM (#4590885)
Also, it's weird for me as a Leaf fan to think of them of having two goalies who are capable of being starting goaltenders after years of guys like Toskala and Raycroft.

Well, he has only played in three games and I've only watched one of those games. I liked what I saw from him as he's physical and seems like he's defensively responsible. Honestly, he reminded me of a more physical Nik Kulemin. He's certainly overpaid though.

I absolutely hate the way the Blues play, and I have a feeling they'll surpass the Wings on my hate list by the end of the season.

So glad the Hawks' brass chose to build a quick, attacking team (well, aside from Bollig) over a 'hard-hitting,' borderline dirty team like St. Louis.

Not looking forward to having to cheer for David Backes in February...

So, uh, is this what you wanted? I like Razor, and appreciate a good goalie fight, but that was just shameful. Beating the #### out of someone who has no experience fighting is a dick move. The even more shameful bit was naming Emery the 3rd star.

yeah, that's all terrible. i've been reevaluating my take on NHL goonery over the last few years, and i'd actually be in favor of suspending emery for last night's asshattery.

but, to be fair, the flyers didn't even dress their proper goon (a guy called jay rosehill), so i'm still kind of willing to give them the benefit of the doubt for now.

Hockey Hall of Fame induction weekend. Just introduced on the ice in Toronto, the 2013 class:
Chris Chelios
Geraldine Heaney
Scott Niedermayer
Brendan Shanahan
Fred Shero

Preceding them on the ice was a collection of current HHOF members, including: Bryan Trottier, Cammi Granato, Angela James, Dino Ciccarelli, Scott Stevens, Lou Lamoriello, Scotty Bowman, Pierre Pilote, Ed Belfour, Lanny McDonald, Borje Salming...OOOH BABY!

Well, in this case, I think it's only about his name isn't Devan Dubnyk.

Cam Janssen scored his scored goal in 3 games (no, really (seriously)) as the Devils hammer the Preds. I wonder how painful Tuesday against the Rangers is destined to be. Also, some old guy got his 123rd shutout, and 2d in a row.
   1577. zack Posted: November 13, 2013 at 12:29 PM (#4599292)
After 16 years, Darcy Regier is finally out as the Sabres' GM. I think it was time, since they should have a number of high picks in the upcoming draft, and Sabres fans hate him.

But I think a lot of the flack he gets is undeserved. Yes, the Sabres have never won anything, but until recently they had terrible ownership and were run like an afterthought. He gets the most flack for the debacle of an off-season when Briere and Drury both left, and the Vanek contract. But Briere and Drury were both horrible, horrible overpays and he had the misfortune of being on the receiving end of literally the only star-level offer sheet in history. He probably should have let Edmonton have him, but after losing the other two it'd be damn hard to make those calls.

Lately, he's had an excellent return for Pominville and Vanek (assuming they flip Moulson). The Leino and Erhoff contracts are terrible, but I assume those came from Pegula. The John Scott and Steve Ott "Fight the Bruins" approach was laughable and had the expected result, and is the major mark against him in my eyes.

Anyway, LaFontaine is the new VP of Ops (which I guess is a thing now), no replacement GM as of now. Oh and Rolston was also fired.

Yep, they're only on the hook for $2.2mil this year and the next 2 - I didn't even know that was possible. Which is less than what Tallon signed him for with the Hawks after he boned the RFA offer sheet.

They keep the more promising Hayes, and Olsen had been passed by in the D prospects. Steeg fits in nicely on the 3rd line and the PK.

The only questionable bit to me is that he hasn't really played the PK full-time since '08-'09. I've never been a fan of Olsen, and Hayes is fungible, so the only real loss is cap space and a roster slot for the Hog kids.

I didn't even know that was possible

One of the few additions to the last CBA that I liked.

I guess Tallon is trying to get his name on another Cup?

Chuckin' Steeg right out onto the kill seems like a very Q thing to do.

One of the better "karma is a #####\" plays I've ever seen: Marchand is standing at center ice, chirping the Sens bench when he's supposed to be changing, and the Sens score during the 20 seconds the Bruins are shorthanded because of it.

if the playoffs started tomorrow only one team for the east would qualify if they were in the west thats tampa with 28pts. they would be tied for 8th with colorado. is the east really that bad?
   1587. Langer Monk Posted: November 18, 2013 at 12:57 PM (#4601804)
On some level, yes the East is that much worse than the West early on - but a number of the teams that have really crappy records against the West so far, Ottawa, NJ, NYR - have had long unsuccessful road trips. Things will start to even out more as the season goes on.

The western teams though on a whole are better. Only Edmonton and Calgary are 'bad'. Compared to Buffalo, Florida, and for October, NJ, NYR and Philly were just awful. Columbus, NYI may not be good. The difference between the Caps and Devils is the shootout at the moment. Detroit's dropped 5 straight in OT or SO.

What is really incredibly to me is how the east is not just losing, but getting destroyed. Take what is generally accepted as the most predicative statistical measure (5v5 fenwick while the score is close), and you have only two Eastern conf. teams in the top 10: Pittsburgh at #5 and New Jersey at #8. Only 6 teams are even in the black score differential wise.

What's up with the Bruins this year? They're barely above even in that measure, and are actually sub-50% when the score is tied. They and the Penguins were really the only elite teams in the East coming into the season, and if they continue to be such a mediocre team possession wise I don't know if they are anymore.

One night after being the first team to beat the Ducks in Anaheim, and in OT to boot after scoring the tying goal with the goalie on the bench, the Devils beat the Kings in LA in OT again, thanks to Cory Schneider, with an assist from Jagr. Kings were all over the Devils, and NJ escaped with a huge out-of-nowhere two game winning streak. 5-1-1, in last 7, things, they are improving.

You can't play like the Bruins play every game during the regular season and have anything left for the playoffs. They take games/periods off. Bruins fans shouldn't panic unless this is how they are playing in March. Given how bad the East is this year, they won't be in much danger of missing the playoffs if they sleepwalk through 3/4 of the regular season.

As for the West being better than the East, the gap is as large right now (in terms of on ice performance) as I can remember, and there have been some years in my memory that were pretty lopsided. It's at AFL/NFL post merger levels right now.

The Leafs continue to win despite getting killed by the metrics. Reimer and Bernier have a combined save percentage of .940.

I've heard that from Bruins fans before, but that doesn't explain what is different about this year. If they've been taking games off for the last couple seasons, why were they an excellent possession team before but aren't this year?

2014: 12th, 51.7%
2013: 5th, 55.8%
2012: 6th, 52.6%
2011: 14th, 50.7%
2010: 3rd, 52.8%

Watching the Devils nearly every night usually do well according to those metrics, and yet sometimes be utterly destroyed, only confirms in my mind that they are seriously flawed yet. Until and unless they are able to quantify the quality of shots generated, it will remain flawed. Scoring from the perimeter without screens or deflections is rare, so if all your possession is getting you only that, the metrics look good while you are shutout for the 4th time.

Meanwhile, it only takes one bounce off a defenseman's skate, or one screened shot on a power play, to cash in.

Hell, here's the Devils two games vs the Kings over the last couple weeks: in NJ and in LA.

Both times the team that played better overall on that particular night lost. In NJ, King was (to my recollection) all alone in front of the goal on a busted coverage to beat Schneider (2d was empty netter) for the only goal, as Scrivens was very good. Then in LA, Scheinder was terrific, stopping a number of odd-man chances, and Scrivens was beaten by a Carter backhand topshelf (believe he was partially screened), and then Jagr alone in front off a good feed in OT to win it.

Kane had a sick goal tonight to win it with 18 srconds left, backhand and backwards on a rebound.

What justifies your interpretation that 2014 is the outlier and not 2013? After all, there was something quite different about 2013 relative to those other seasons, right?

Another successful Circus Trip for the 'Hawks. It's weird to be thinking of the Circus Trip as a platform for the Men of Four Feathers to demonstrate their talent after so many years of it being a platform to showcase, oh, I don't know, Alexander Karpotsev (vechnaya pamyat).

It's the reverse-Avery! If the forward-Avery is a penalty, the reverse-Avery should be.

James Neal has quietly been a dirty player. He clearly put in some quality study time at the Cooke-Style Dojo.

Speaking of which, if Cooke had done the exact thing Neal did to Marchand, he'd immediately be banned from the league for life.
