OT: November College Football Thread.

Alabama Is still Ranked #1.  Will they hold steady to repeat? Make it to the title game?  Or does another team claim the Crystal ball in Miami in January.

Les Miles doesn't read books.

That's the worst fake field goal call I have ever seen.

Ok State just returned a pooch kickoff for a touchdown. Ok St needed it too.

Tonight is unquestionably the best night of regular season college football of the year.

That was a ####### big time run by Barner. Was still barely short, but gave them the opp to go for it.

I'm not a college football fan (not really a football fan actually) so take this for what it's worth. I was at a friend's house for a birthday party and we wound up watching the second half of the Notre Dame-Pitt game and the fact that ND is #3 in the country is incredible to me. I get that their defense is top notch but that offense looked completely inept. The only play that seemed to work for them was "everyone go long and wait for some space to clear so the QB can run."

From the little I've seen of the Alabama they would beat ND by about 3 touchdowns.

Yeah, 1, 2, and 4 all in close games right now. 3 needed double OT to survive. Pretty cool. Any other night I would have given up after the afternoon gut punch.

Triple OT. But I agree. not only are the games close. They're interesting, well played, and really fun to watch. I'm bouncing between each game and loving all of them.

My Oregon feed is really choppy, which sucks because I would love to follow that one too. But right now I am totally loving LSU all of a sudden being able to throw the ball. The K-St. game has been super exciting. OK St. looks a lot better than they did at the beginning of the year. Bedlam is going to be a crazy game again.

since there's no NFL thread, i'm just gonna say here that the schedule makers really did not do andy reid any favors.

the eagles have 4 games against teams coming off bye weeks, and so far, they're 0-3. they lost to pittsburgh, detroit, and atlanta, so those are good teams that they may have lost to anyway, but still, to have to play 4 such games is really not good. the last one is against washington in a few weeks.

and then in the next 7 weeks, they have 2 monday night games, a sunday night game, and a thursday night game, including a stretch where they play 4 games in 18 days -- MON-SUN-SUN-THU.
   111. Spivey Posted: November 03, 2012 at 09:42 PM (#4292209)
Apparently having really big offensive linemen and really fast runningbacks is a market inefficiency.
   112. Spivey Posted: November 03, 2012 at 09:45 PM (#4292210)
Ok St really pissed that drive away.
   113. Cowboy Popup Posted: November 03, 2012 at 09:47 PM (#4292212)
K-St is really good at taking the ball away.

And Bama probably just won the game.
   114. Spivey Posted: November 03, 2012 at 10:07 PM (#4292228)
Oregon's up 3 scores now with 9 minutes left. Their offense is just relentless.
   115. zenbitz Posted: November 03, 2012 at 10:07 PM (#4292231)
I turn on the usc-oregon game for 5 minutes and manage to catch the game's only punt
   116. Cowboy Popup Posted: November 03, 2012 at 10:11 PM (#4292237)
In what world is Matt Barkley a Heisman candidate (the broadcast just listed him as one)? QBs who play for 3 loss USC teams and throw tons of picks in their losses have no business being Heisman candidates.
   117. Gold Star - just Gold Star Posted: November 03, 2012 at 10:12 PM (#4292238)
Barkley, like his coach, is overrated.
   118. Cowboy Popup Posted: November 03, 2012 at 10:15 PM (#4292241)
They called PI before Barkley threw the ball. That's a lame call.
   119. CFBF Is A Golden Spider Duck Posted: November 03, 2012 at 10:16 PM (#4292243)
Kiffin's an odd case in that he keeps gets getting hired for great jobs, and yet no one outside of the organizations that hire him thinks that well of him.
   120. Spivey Posted: November 03, 2012 at 10:23 PM (#4292250)
I don't consider Tennessee a great job. And USC was under probation when he took that job.

There was a huge 50/50 call on an onside kick in the Oregon game. Went against USC, and that's probably game. Up 10 with 5 minutes left, and now they have the ball.
   121. Cowboy Popup Posted: November 03, 2012 at 10:29 PM (#4292253)
Delay of game during a hurry up. Sheesh USC.
   122. Cowboy Popup Posted: November 03, 2012 at 10:32 PM (#4292255)
Well, that's ball game. I don't think either of the other two games will be this exciting at the end. K-St. has a lot of separation and I don't see Bama giving up 11 more points and not scoring again, although I suppose either game could get close in a hurry.
   123. CFBF Is A Golden Spider Duck Posted: November 03, 2012 at 10:34 PM (#4292256)
LSU runs this strange play where they toss to the running back, but with the back in exactly the same position he'd be in if they handed the ball off. It's a halfback toss right up the middle. They're the only team I've ever seen do that.

I wonder if it's a speed thing; get the ball to the back faster that way.
   124. Spivey Posted: November 03, 2012 at 10:34 PM (#4292258)
Alabama is vulnerable if for no other reason than their offense is struggling and if you go 3 and out regularly you really expose your defense. This is in fact a big reason why Alabama's offense looks so good. Other teams can't sustain drives.
   125. Cowboy Popup Posted: November 03, 2012 at 10:37 PM (#4292260)

Imagine if Miles hadn't given them the opportunity to score before the half. His decisions on 4th down have really cost his team so far.
   126. Spivey Posted: November 03, 2012 at 10:41 PM (#4292262)
Danielson doesn't understand the rules, even though they were just explained by the refs. Big time 3rd down pickup by LSU anyways, though.
   127. Cowboy Popup Posted: November 03, 2012 at 10:47 PM (#4292266)
Boy, that's a heartbreaking call on the onside kick. Looks like a good call. LSU came so close to really turning the game around. Now Bama has great field position.
   128. Spivey Posted: November 03, 2012 at 10:48 PM (#4292267)
LSU seems to think they can't play Alabama straight up. Despite the fact they're doing exactly that, and if they weren't doing all of this cute bullshit that Alabama is entirely expecting they may be winning.
   129. Cowboy Popup Posted: November 03, 2012 at 10:49 PM (#4292269)

270 lbs rumbling 42 yards. Don't see that very often in college football. This game just got extra awesome.

all that means is that there are multiple teams in college football that can beat the kansas city chiefs.

also, any top 5 team beating anyone else at home shouldn't be a huge surprise.

If LSU wins tonight and then wins out, I can easily see a scenario where LSU loses the SEC title game and Bama goes to the BCS title game as the #2 team in the country.

Well, that's a big part of it. He can't just run it up the guy twice in a row, especially with the way the passing game is clicking right now. If that's his call, he might as well kick it.

Doesn't matter though, the defense is a rock right now.
   147. Cowboy Popup Posted: November 03, 2012 at 11:25 PM (#4292308)
Someone needs to explain to the announcer that 62 - 51 /= 1.

Whoa, what are you doing watching college football?

The LSU offense is crazy consistent right now. Run, run, 3rd and 6 pass, first down. And a false start takes away a fumble.

That was one of the more memorable games I've ever watched in college football. And yeah, LSU deserved to win. But it also goes to show why Saban is such a great coach. He gets the elite talent that only a few coaches get. But he just coaches really solid and fundamentally. I don't think he's doing things other coaches can't do, or even don't do. But he just does it week in, week out, year in, year out. He's a machine.

I don't think Bama could have done that all game. LSU's defense was clearly in ultra-prevent mode. Even the announcers were commenting on how much space LSU's d-backs were giving Bama's receivers. Give some credit to the Bama offense, for executing and the screen was a great play call, but LSU didn't make them earn it for most of the drive.

Yeah, the announcers said it, but Lundquist and Danielson also have no ####### idea what they're talking about. I just re-watched the drive.

Play 1: A good throw in between a couple of defenders, turn and ran up field.
Play 2: Defender was playing tight, but it looked to be something along the lines of linebacker vs. tight end and the Alabama player made a nice catch.
Play 3: Looked like the WR ran off the DB and then settles for a 10 yard curl. It was the best, and really only, example of prevent defense.
Play 4: Deep ball, coverage was good.
Play 5: Screen pass for a touchdown on a blitz.

Sometimes teams play prevent defenses and it costs them games. Sometimes teams just play better offense in the last couple of minutes, or something random happens, and people blame it on the "prevent defense" thing.

and while the prevent defense is terrible in general, what really baffles me is why you would ever use it in college, where the clock stops on a first down.

I can't handle too many games like the Bama-LSU game. God bless Les Miles, he always seems to cost his team a victory each year. Mettenberger played a far better game then I thought he would so my hats off to him. But in the clutch, AJ shined. Sometimes, you have to be content to steal a victory. In 2009, Bama had two games they shouldn't have won, Tennessee where Mount Cody blocked two field goals, and Auburn where we won on a last minute drive.

I went to the Bama-LSU game. It was glorious.

I am envious! Death Valley is one of the few SEC stadiums I haven't been to.

Wasn't planning on going to the game, but bought a ticket an hour before kickoff. Almost felt like it was not worth it...but in the end it totally was.

I was at Oregon-USC with Tuque. It was surreal.

So...I don't follow football very closely but saw some games last night.

Is the reason the SEC keeps winning national titles that they're the only conference that still has defensive units?

Beating Ole Miss by 27 is more impressive than a 3-OT wishcast past Pitt. Notre Dame shouldn't be in the top five.

I don't find either one of them particularly Impressive, really.

I also love the fact that Steve ####### Spurrier was the one who said he thinks that Alabama can beat a NFL team and the braindead media jumps all over it....
To be fair, Alabama might be able to beat the NFL teams coached by Steve Spurrier.

Alabama might be able to beat a NFL team coached by Les Miles.
