And yet they were good enough to take Bama down to within one tipped pass at the line from a trip to the SEC championship.
That's a deceptive way to phrase it. Bama was the third highest ranked team in the SEC at the end of the season. MSU was the third highest ranked team in the Big Ten at the end of the season.
I mean, Ohio St. beat Arkansas that year, and both were non-champ BCS reps, using your phrasing, that's an even matchup that the Big Ten won. But I don't think it's reasonable to argue that year's Arkansas team was better than that year's Bama team, especially at the end of the year.
Yeah, stretching out the field definitely helped open up some lanes. It's a good sign for Texas that Applewhite seems to have figured that out. Big series here for the Texas O, Texas' D is fired up right now and the momentum is in their favor. Gotta keep it up here.
That is actually a case of the SEC scheduling up. Ohio State were Big Ten co-champs with one loss (Wisconsin, Michigan State, and Ohio State all finished with one loss in the Big Ten, all three had one L going into the bowl season). Arkansas was 3rd place in the SEC West (with 2 losses). Of course that game never happened in the record book either.
No, they were tied for second (and beat the other two-loss team). Otherwise, the other SEC West runner-up would have been playing against OSU.
Can we at least stop with the place in the SEC West stuff? The 4, or maybe 5 best teams in the SEC that year were in the SEC West. 3rd or 4th in the west is 3rd or 4th in the conference.
And as Spivey notes, they were tied for second. And they beat LSU. That's why they went to the Sugar Bowl and LSU went to the Cotton Bowl.
I was 11 then and unfortunately can't answer this question.
He actually was exposed the night before the Sugar Bowl when it was reported by a newspaper. Check it out, this was/is a really good story about the guy I was talking about (30 year old suiting up for UT). He vanished the night before the game.
If you haven't seen TCU their defensive ends are what you want to watch, I think they have two NFLers there.
Edit: Oklahoma always reloads too.
I think Texas ought to be the favorite next year, but TCU is probably going to be right behind them. And TCU beat Texas this year, in Texas, and play at TCU next year, so even a better Texas squad might not prevent them from winning the conference.
I think I would add Baylor to the rebuilding list too. And I really don't see Iowa St or Kansas challenging for the title. So Texas, TCU and OU (because they are OU) look like the cream of the conference next year.
Lot of OU fans feel like they will be better without Landry, I don't know if I agree though.
QB play will be way down I'm thinking across the board in the conference. Other than the OKst QB the guys that are coming back aren't that impressive.
MSU better do something before halftime or this might be a wipe out. The thing about TCU is they can rush 4 and bring plenty of pressure, so if you have to throw it's bad news.
Have I mentioned I will be at the Fiesta Bowl? Like 20 times probably.
I think, if I go again to a non-BCS, non-Cotton, game I'll wait and stub hub at the last minute.
That is probably the best bet. Several years ago, when Kentucky played Florida State in the Music City Bowl, we decided at literally the last minute to go. We were able to get 8 tickets together (4 in one row and 4 in the next) for something like 30-35% of face value. If we had been willing to settle for random pairs, we could have gotten them a lot cheaper than that. For the life of me I don't see how schools can possibly sell their guarantees when tickets are so readily available from other sources.
Tevin Washington is the worst passer I've ever seen. Vad Lee struggles with consistency but he's young, should improve. Plus he has a badass name.
USC is setting the gold standard for not showing up to play. 5 first downs so far in 50 minutes of football.
The whole Sun Bowl experience was a PR debacle for USC, who were too open about not wanting to be there. Then they lost, badly. Yes, some of it was that Max Wittek had a bad game, but seriously - he looked like no one had ever really coached him on how to be a QB. Isn't there something there that a coaching staff is supposed to accomplish, given someone who seems to have the appropriate physical tools?
As of a month ago USC had the consensus #1 recruiting class in the country despite the scholarship limits. I imagine his leash will be closely related to how well he keeps that class together and how his next one looks.
Yeah, but they're going to be coached by Lane Kiffin.
And on the hook for a $10 million exit fee to boot, if ESPN is correct.
Of course they are. Because they're idiots.
great job
Recruiting doesn't matter if you can't develop the players. And let's be honest, USC basically recruits itself. It's not like the next coach isn't going to be able to get top 10 classes as well.
Me too. That's the one I chose to start watching and then flipping from it. Michigan hasn't looked good so far, this might get out of hand.
Penn State and Ohio State being ineligible is the easy answer. As a Purdue fan, I figured this would be the worst team to ever play in a New Year's Day bowl game. Nothing so far has disabused me of that notion.
.at least since they took the Citrus Bowl monicker away.
Because no one has ever fellated the military at a football game before.
Purdue two best performances this season were losses against the only two unbeatens.
I think this is just bizarre. Being a big 12 fan if my team isn't playing I'll usually watch a Big 12 game over another league, like say OK St vs Purdue, even if the other league has "better" teams facing off. To me this seems to cannibalize your secondary audience.
The Georgia vs Nebraska game is a win/win for me, if Georgia wins those jerks in Nebraska lose, if Nebraska wins I gain in my bowl pool - confidence points compared to the other top teams.
Not much else to do when ESPN has the rights to all these games. They won't pair anything against the BCS games later, so its either move the game to a different day or kick off four games by 1:30 ET.
go figure
Not to argue that Ga Tech has a good defense, but I would like to point out that UNC finished 10th in the nation in scoring offense. They weren't bad.
see if they can hang on
