Alabama Is still Ranked #1.  Will they hold steady to repeat? Make it to the title game?  Or does another team claim the Crystal ball in Miami in January.

that was a hopeless attempt at a 2-point conversion

mike

linebacker

He's going ot be more LT than Jevon Kearse, I think.

What will Clowney be at the next level? A pass rushing LB, or a smallish DE?

either, depends on who drafts him.
   2305. Mike Webber Posted: January 01, 2013 at 05:29 PM (#4336170)
@2289 - I only saw LSU play twice and both times the coaching staff choked away games they should have won.
   2306. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: January 01, 2013 at 05:30 PM (#4336172)
It is rare that LSU loses w/o a healthy amount of coaching blunders.

Keep in mind he has 2 offseasons in front of him before the earlier he'd be playing in the NFL. He'll grow in size.

Nice call that was a catch.

Miles has notoriously poor clock-management. Even once Clemson got to the LSU 40, there was 40 seconds, and he had two TOs. He had to know they were in range, where time was no longer a factor for Clemson - so *he* needed time now.
   2310. Foghorn Leghorn Posted: January 01, 2013 at 05:32 PM (#4336178)
Clemson made an awesome comeback - that 4th and 16 completion was just lucky as hell, but they converted. Tajh Boyd took a beating and stayed on. Just all around good game.

My daughter got confused who we were pulling for, and I explained "an exciting ending".
   2311. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: January 01, 2013 at 05:33 PM (#4336179)
Even in winning, Miles' decisions are incredibly bizarre, the Tennessee game a couple years ago when there was 13 guys on the field, then the game where they beat Auburn on a pass play w no time outs while in range, and played it off like it was no big deal.
   2312. Spivey Posted: January 01, 2013 at 05:34 PM (#4336180)
Harveys,
Taylor Martinez is Junior.

Taylor Martinez is worse than David Ash. I'd probably go crazy if I rooted for a team that had him start 4 years.
   2313. Spivey Posted: January 01, 2013 at 05:34 PM (#4336181)
YOU HAVE GOT TO MAKE THAT SACK SON
   2314. smileyy Posted: January 01, 2013 at 05:35 PM (#4336183)
The Georgia QB (Murray) has really been showing off a modern pro arm. His ability to flick off accurate lasers is impressive.
   2315. Spivey Posted: January 01, 2013 at 05:35 PM (#4336184)
The toughness Connor Shaw has shown as a freshman this year has been incredible. It's one of the most surprising developments of the season for me.
   2316. Spivey Posted: January 01, 2013 at 05:38 PM (#4336186)
I've been pretty impressed by Michigan's 2 white, long-haired linebackers. They're all over the field, and both young.
   2317. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 05:38 PM (#4336187)
goodness

wow beat the blitz
   2319. Spivey Posted: January 01, 2013 at 05:38 PM (#4336189)
Connor Shaw just took a shot on the chin to complete that pass.

Edit: That was Thompson. Still very impressive.

shaw is on the sideline
   2321. Spivey Posted: January 01, 2013 at 05:40 PM (#4336193)
Michigan's defensive scheme seemed to be very vulnerable to vertical routes in the middle of the field.
2322. CFBF Is A Golden Spider Duck Posted: January 01, 2013 at 05:41 PM (#4336194)
Clowney is 6-7, 256 pounds. Even in the NFL that's not a "smallish" defensive end.

   2325. Foghorn Leghorn Posted: January 01, 2013 at 05:43 PM (#4336198)
I have never understood the coaching on kicks like that - the receiver should take a knee instantly.
2326. odds are meatwad is drunk Posted: January 01, 2013 at 05:43 PM (#4336200)
Damn they couldnt pull it out, the sec is looking less then dominate in the bowl season so far

Nebraska just doesn't know what to do with him. A lot of coaches would have him in Manhattan the past two years at the Heisman banquet.

1-2, where one of the losses was close, all against SEC teams? That's a banner friggin' year for the B1G.
   2332. Spivey Posted: January 01, 2013 at 05:54 PM (#4336211)
It's annoying that the best bowl game of the year is being reduced to a conference pissing contest. Two good teams played, and it was a very hard fought, competitive game.
   2333. Spivey Posted: January 01, 2013 at 05:56 PM (#4336212)
Louisville and NIU in BCS bowls is just baffling. The Orange Bowl seems like it has more years where I don't watch than when I do.
   2334. Cowboy Popup Posted: January 01, 2013 at 05:58 PM (#4336213)
That was a great game. Tough loss for Michigan fans, if their D-Linemen could have wrapped up Thompson, they could have won it.

Btw, the clear winner of bowl season so far is the ACC.

3-2 with FSU to go? And two teams sanctioned from bowls!
   2338. Cowboy Popup Posted: January 01, 2013 at 06:07 PM (#4336218)
3-2 with FSU to go?

Yeah, but they were dogs in all of the games, except the Rutgers game. They beat LSU, USC, a 6-6 team took down a 9 win team. Duke played Cincy closer than they had any business doing. The only true dud game for them was NC State.

IIRC, for the ACC, having a winning bowl record is pretty unusual.
   2339. Spivey Posted: January 01, 2013 at 06:10 PM (#4336221)

The fact that the #2 team from the ACC was a dog to the #5/#6 team from the SEC isn't something they should be complimented for. They won. So they deserve credit for that. But the reason why they're dogs is because their conference sucks. And I think it's fair to say any team that showed up was going to beat USC yesterday.

We wouldn't have this problem if people didn't have such SEC envy.

After the Lattimore injury, I think you could argue that LSU was the #4/5 team in the SEC.

I am in no way suggesting that the ACC is good, just that comparing their performance to expectation, they have had the best bowl season so far. But I think you're undervaluing the win over a top ten LSU squad, who is probably more like 4 in the SEC (beat A&M and USCe, played Florida and Bama very close).

I'm pretty sure that the SEC will have the best bowl season, again, when all is said and done, but the ACC hasn't embarrassed themselves, which is huge for them.

shelton johnson is well known at wisconsin for his lack of ball skills

wisconsin special teams are poor for those not aware
   2349. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 06:23 PM (#4336242)
barry, maybe you should tell the coordinator to avoid being stupid
   2350. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 06:24 PM (#4336244)
phillips is a horrible passer

again, just a heads up
   2351. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 06:29 PM (#4336251)
i thought the defense would be better ready

but they look completely confused
   2352. Spivey Posted: January 01, 2013 at 06:31 PM (#4336252)
Wisconsin, if they play their cards right, may be able to get a stop at some point in this game.
   2353. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 06:31 PM (#4336253)
apparently stanford is going to catch everything today

rats
   2354. Cowboy Popup Posted: January 01, 2013 at 06:32 PM (#4336255)
Stanford's offense is firing on all cylinders right now. Those two big pass plays were especially impressive.
   2355. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 06:32 PM (#4336256)
better challenge the offensive line to give the defense a chance to get its sea legs
   2356. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 06:36 PM (#4336259)
i know wisky doesn't want to have phillips throw but if you are going to throw you have to throw on early downs
   2357. Spivey Posted: January 01, 2013 at 06:38 PM (#4336261)
Musberger's got a lot of work ahead of him if he's going to botch more names and plays than Gruden did earlier today.
   2358. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 06:44 PM (#4336267)
stanford now run blitzing repeatedly
   2359. Spivey Posted: January 01, 2013 at 06:46 PM (#4336270)
I think Wisconsin needs to consider almost every 3rd and short and 4th and short 4 down territory in this game, regardless of field position. They need TOP and it is no secret what they have to do to even stay competitive.
   2360. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 06:50 PM (#4336274)
you have tight ends who can catch passes barry
   2361. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 06:51 PM (#4336276)
like i was saying
   2362. Spivey Posted: January 01, 2013 at 06:51 PM (#4336277)
Huge conversion.
   2363. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 06:52 PM (#4336278)
this is a no brainer. you have all these linemen, you have ball, you go for it

of course if you give it to phillips you are begging for trouble
   2364. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 06:54 PM (#4336279)
that was a terrible call

how do you not give the ball to ball??????????
   2365. Spivey Posted: January 01, 2013 at 06:55 PM (#4336281)
Wagner missed the block there, and he had the hold to bring back the TD.
   2366. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 06:56 PM (#4336282)
no brent, legit question

you have the all time leader in scoring touchdowns and you give it to the smaller back with less power?

really?

really???????
   2367. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 06:57 PM (#4336284)
spivey

c'mon, that wasn't going anywhere anyway. the whole middle was clogged

a really stupid call

   2368. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 06:59 PM (#4336286)
really conservative by stanford

wisky linebackers are awful in coverage. they could have easily gone to a tight end and gotten a completion
   2369. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 07:01 PM (#4336288)
now wouldn't be the worse time to try play action

Must catch that.
   2371. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 07:04 PM (#4336291)
the stanford guys make that catch

good grief.
   2372. Spivey Posted: January 01, 2013 at 07:06 PM (#4336292)
It's a good thing that was deflected because I think that was going to be 5 yards behind him.
   2373. Spivey Posted: January 01, 2013 at 07:06 PM (#4336293)
I don't know what Montee will do in the NFL but he's everything you'd ever want in a college back.
   2374. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 07:12 PM (#4336298)
wisconsin d-line needs to limit the slanting

   2375. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 07:13 PM (#4336299)
like i was saying about linebackers in coverage

Best commercial of bowl season competition has been decided, that Monsters University ad was awesome.
   2378. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 07:23 PM (#4336317)
wisconsin is more petrified of phillips throwing than even more than i anticipated
   2379. Spivey Posted: January 01, 2013 at 07:24 PM (#4336318)
Wisconsin is relying way too much on the jet sweep. They've done it 4 times. It's worked twice, but one of those times it was completely snuffed out and the player just dodged a few tackles. It's there to keep them honest.
   2380. Spivey Posted: January 01, 2013 at 07:25 PM (#4336319)
I loved the way Cromartie was begging the refs not to throw the flag there.

spivey

that is matt canada. he is not beloved by wisconsin fans.

he will run a play and it will need to fail multiple times before he surrenders

it's bizarre
   2382. Spivey Posted: January 01, 2013 at 07:28 PM (#4336322)
I don't understand why Stanford isn't running more smashmouth football. They're really damn good at it, and outside of the drive where they were pinned inside their 1 yard line, it's worked really well.
   2383. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 07:29 PM (#4336325)
spivey

offensive coordinators feel the need for razzle dazzle in bowl games

i think it's combination of the long series of practice, looking for ways to keep the kids engaged in practice, looking to surprise the opposition and coordinators auditioning for their next job
   2384. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 07:30 PM (#4336326)
the only passes he can complete have to be tipped??
   2385. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 07:31 PM (#4336327)
i think phillips deked the stanford guys into thinking he was going out of bounds
   2386. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 07:31 PM (#4336328)
this is not a james white kind of game. stanford is too quick and strong. white does not break tackles.
   2387. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 07:33 PM (#4336329)
he completed that???
   2388. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 07:34 PM (#4336330)
you know it would be helpful to know that wisconsin can complete a pass cleanly
   2389. Spivey Posted: January 01, 2013 at 07:34 PM (#4336331)
The Lord of Deflections has a soft spot for Wisconsin.
   2390. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 07:36 PM (#4336334)
hooray

another tight end
   2391. Cowboy Popup Posted: January 01, 2013 at 07:38 PM (#4336335)
That's a catch. Wisconsin is right in this game.
   2392. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 07:38 PM (#4336336)
only phil luckett would overturn that
   2393. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 07:39 PM (#4336337)
wisconsin took a punch in the mouth, staggered, and are now wading in with some body shots
   2394. Spivey Posted: January 01, 2013 at 07:39 PM (#4336338)
Wisconsin only being down 17-14 is absolutely ridiculous.

Stanford has a lot more talent. I think Wisconsin is having a lot of small things go there way to keep drives going. I also think Stanford is dicking around on offense a little bit.

Wisconsin did play well, and they deserve credit. They are going to have to be able to throw the ball to win the game, even if it's not for a lot of yards, at least to keep drives moving.
   2398. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 07:57 PM (#4336355)
spivey

what is talent?

at wisconsin they believe talent is someone who will get in the best condition possible, give extreme effort on every play, to be as aggressive as possible within the rules and then execute about a dozen plays to absolute perfection

i know folks find this approach really boring.

but in college ball if you do those things you will beat most teams

you will get exposed when you face teams that do those things and have more athletic ability

i think too many folks think about the athletic ability and not the other stuff

i think stanford played a sloppy second quarter and got cute with its playcalling

   2399. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 07:58 PM (#4336356)
i wonder if folks understand how lazy athletes are during games. it is the most consistently frustrating thing being a coach
