Alabama Is still Ranked #1.  Will they hold steady to repeat? Make it to the title game?  Or does another team claim the Crystal ball in Miami in January.

stanford's pass rush is negated against a team that doesn't pass much

stanford has not exploited the special teams mismatch

stanford should be throwing to their tight ends. that is the weak underbelly of a solid wisconsin defense
   2402. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 08:08 PM (#4336365)
will somebody recognize that this game is not for james white? he has games like this where he disappears.

accept it and move on
   2403. Spivey Posted: January 01, 2013 at 08:13 PM (#4336367)
The Stanford QB looks rattled.
   2404. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 08:13 PM (#4336368)
ergo why defensive backs are defensive backs and not wide receivers
   2405. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 08:15 PM (#4336370)
spivey

if you can get players to keep to their assignments the 2 guys down and 3 or 4 acting like they will rush but then some or all dropping off would be confusing to a college qb

and a moment hestitation is all you need
   2406. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 08:17 PM (#4336372)
see what i was saying about canada?

the playcalling is the same down to down
   2407. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 08:18 PM (#4336374)
really? a timeout?

oh for heaven's sake
   2408. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 08:19 PM (#4336377)
if i was being sarcastic i might suggest that wisconsin is trying to run out the clock
   2409. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 08:21 PM (#4336378)
ball is the best player on offense and he's on the sideline

big shock. white gets creamed

this is surreal
   2410. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 08:22 PM (#4336380)
i think wisconsin is kidding themselves if they think they can shut down stanford consistently
   2411. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 08:24 PM (#4336383)
herbstreit is correct. someone is going to have to 'do' something

i am so sick of the james white experience today
   2413. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 08:27 PM (#4336386)
hit was legal

kid should have caught it. maybe it gets jarred out

   2414. Spivey Posted: January 01, 2013 at 08:29 PM (#4336388)
That kid looks hurt.
   2415. Spivey Posted: January 01, 2013 at 08:31 PM (#4336390)
That was bullshit. That should have been roughing, not running into.
   2416. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 08:31 PM (#4336391)
how is that not roughing the kicker????
   2417. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 08:36 PM (#4336397)
borland won;t play in the nfl but he is such a good tackler
   2418. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 08:38 PM (#4336399)
a legit completed pass

hooray
   2419. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 08:41 PM (#4336404)
if phillips had just run forward he gets the first down
   2420. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 08:41 PM (#4336405)
by the way, the blown up run play was with james white in the lineup

guy is bad luck today
   2421. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 08:47 PM (#4336410)
got lucky there
   2422. spike Posted: January 01, 2013 at 08:49 PM (#4336413)
Nobody seems particularly interested in winning right now.
   2423. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 08:50 PM (#4336414)
the stanford punter has been their mvp since the first quarter
   2424. Spivey Posted: January 01, 2013 at 08:55 PM (#4336418)
It's hard to believe this Stanford team beat Oregon. Then again, it's also hard to believe they lost to Washington.
   2425. Pops Freshenmeyer Posted: January 01, 2013 at 08:55 PM (#4336419)
No way that should be a fifteen yard penalty.
   2426. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 08:55 PM (#4336420)
well, that's no fun
   2427. Spivey Posted: January 01, 2013 at 08:56 PM (#4336421)
I thought that Wisconsin may have cashed in their chips when they were around midfield on 4th and 1 and decided that was the drive to go for the win. I understand why they didn't - Stanford's QB has been erratic to bad most of the game. But Wisconsin needs to score at least one more time.
   2428. Spivey Posted: January 01, 2013 at 09:00 PM (#4336424)
That block in the back crap there happens near every pile up on every play.
   2429. Spivey Posted: January 01, 2013 at 09:05 PM (#4336430)
That was an awful throw.
   2430. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 09:05 PM (#4336431)
good

this forces the offense to stop trying to run out the d8mn clock and try and score
   2431. spike Posted: January 01, 2013 at 09:05 PM (#4336432)
Welp, here's your chance Wisconsin.
   2432. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 09:07 PM (#4336433)
so do you put stave in the game?
   2433. Spivey Posted: January 01, 2013 at 09:08 PM (#4336435)
Phillips has done basically everything asked of him. I wouldn't pull him.

   2435. Spivey Posted: January 01, 2013 at 09:12 PM (#4336439)
Well, it looks like we're going to see nothing but sweeps the whole way down the field.

3 minutes left in the game and still terrified of your starting qb throwing the ball

The AZ Cards punter (Zastudil) probably was their MVP for the season. Never seen a team at any level have that, but the Cards are special.

Perhaps for good reason.

and i guess that is why

   2442. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 09:15 PM (#4336446)
that's the game
   2443. Spivey Posted: January 01, 2013 at 09:16 PM (#4336448)
Jesus that was a waste of 15 seconds.
   2444. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 09:17 PM (#4336451)
it;s the pass play i don't understand. there are lower risk pass plays you can call other than the middle of the field.

and what about play action? it's not like stanford can ignore the run

   2445. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 09:19 PM (#4336453)
that non call on roughing the kicker and then wisconsin not going for it on 4th and 1 are things in the second half that will haunt wisconsin
2446. Gold Star - just Gold Star Posted: January 01, 2013 at 09:20 PM (#4336455)
Immediate thoughts: Both teams will walk away from Pasadena satisfied. Stanford got its win; Wisc acquitted itself well. And Barry seems like a nice guy, so I'm glad he had a good time on his winter break.

that non call on roughing the kicker

That and the asinine personal foul on the late fair catch were two momentum shifting bad calls. That sucks, Wisconsin had a great shot to win today and it would have been nice if the refs had not gotten in the way of the game playing out.
   2449. Spivey Posted: January 01, 2013 at 09:23 PM (#4336459)
Well, this was a battle of two teams trying to win in spite of their QB.

Wisconsin has nothing to be ashamed of. They seemed to be dictating the pace of play for a lot of the game.

you are clearly of the mind that because a team has a high ranking they are really good

i didn't see anything in stanford that wowed me save for their punter.

if wisconsin could have executed a forward pass wisconsin wins the game

the wisconsin defense handled the stanford offense the last 3 quarters

There may be a time for that kind of reflection later. But it's not 10 minutes after you lose a tightly contested Rose Bowl. Wisconsin has now lost 3 Rose Bowls in a row, all of which were close games. Wisconsin had some bad close game luck last year, losing both regular season games due to hail marys. This year, they lost 6 games and didn't lose a single game by more than 6 points.

If I were a Wisconsin fan, I'd be frustrated, not satisfied.
   2454. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 09:33 PM (#4336470)
i don't know why any wisconsin fan should be glad about the team not losing by 3 touchdowns

this game was there to be won
2455. Gold Star - just Gold Star Posted: January 01, 2013 at 09:34 PM (#4336473)
But, seriously, Stanford IS good. I'm in Pac-12 country so I can see it for myself; the Tree is for real.

gold star

maybe they were in other games

they were beatable today

if you are going to tell me two teams that were even in yardage, first downs, time of possession, etc, etc are somehow so inequal in areas not shown on the field or the numbers that one of the teams should have actually won by double digits that is quite the trick

and if stanford is good then wisconsin is good. because they went toe to toe today
   2460. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 09:39 PM (#4336480)

against tcu wisconsin outgained tcu, had the ball for 13 more minutes and beat the living sh8t out of them.

but they missed a kick, had poor execution at key moments and a tcu linebacker made 3 plays of his life

against oregon wisconsin had the ball plenty but turned it over twice when they had no margin of error and lost by a touchdown

and now this

grumble, grumble
   2464. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: January 01, 2013 at 09:50 PM (#4336501)

the defense has been there all season. but the kickers are garbage, qb play has been wildly inconsistent and injuries on the offensive line bit them most of the season

Oregon State, you mean. And it was even worse - Badgers lost by a FG.

Gold Star, he's talking about last year's Rose Bowl.

For the record, TCU beat Wisconsin fair and square.
   2467. Spivey Posted: January 01, 2013 at 09:53 PM (#4336507)
Jesus, when I heard this NIU QB had 1770 yards rushing I just assumed that was a career number, not a single season stat. That's ####### impressive.
   2468. Spivey Posted: January 01, 2013 at 09:56 PM (#4336509)
Harvey - Wisconsin is good. They aren't great, and they aren't as good as Stanford. But the Sagarin ratings put them as the 20th best team, which I think is a pretty fair representation of their play.

They're basically as good as a team without an elite defense and no QB can be.

i know you revel in being contrary and writing outlandish things so will just ignore that nonsense about the tcu/wisconsin matchup

tcu did win as evidenced by the final score

but i guarantee if tcu was playing texas and texas had put it to tcu the way wisconsin took tcu to the woodshed your view would be wildly different

   2472. Cowboy Popup Posted: January 01, 2013 at 10:07 PM (#4336525)
Awesome punt from Lynch there.
   2473. Spivey Posted: January 01, 2013 at 10:13 PM (#4336529)
Here's the box score (edit: at end of post). Wisconsin had 80 more yards. Teams lose games while having 80 more yards ALL THE TIME. When turnovers and yards are pretty even red zone efficiency is usually what is going to decide the game. Also, the idea they "beat the ####\" out of TCU is crap. If you are resorting to fake punts in the 2nd quarter when you're behind, and you trail the entire second half - you're not beating the crap out of anyone.

TCU had one of the best defenses in the country, so I don't think it was necessarily a fluke they played well in the red zone.

Part of why I'm picking up the fight for TCU is because I hear the same bullshit you're spewing pretty often living in Madison. And the other fact is that whenever legitimately good midmajor teams do well in a BCS game people are always making excuses about it.

Anyone can feel free to mock NIU this year as they have no business being in the BCS.

bielama ran fake punts all the time. it was part of his approach. not done out of desperation as you are alluding to in your post.

and i meant physically. the wisconsin offensive line handled tcu regularly but a combination of missed assignments at key times and that one linebacker making high effort plays short circuited several drives that had to start in tough field position thanks to the tcu punter

i wasn't mocking tcu. only pointing out what was clear in watching the game.

if wisconsin was assignment sure in that game it wins.

Wisconsin's offensive line was incredible that year. So that's no surprise. TCU's defense was also undersized, compared to Wisconsin's offensive line. You're also talking about one aspect of the game. Both teams had roughly the same number of first downs. TCU's defense was a lot more than one linebacker making plays. Sorry, I'm just pointing out what was obvious to anyone watching the game.

The main thing people ##### about is the playcalling. TCU struggled with the run right at them. But when Wisconsin ran sideline to sideline it almost always was stopped for little to no gain because of TCU's defense was so fast and they were really good tacklers (though small).
   2479. Cowboy Popup Posted: January 01, 2013 at 10:49 PM (#4336551)
Well, Northern Illinois isn't a BCS caliber team (not that anything beforehand suggested they were), they look pretty bad tonight. But fortunately for them, FSU is playing like crap too.

This is what I hear, still, from my UW circle of friends/colleagues. They also say BB and Chryst were arrogant thinking they'd just run over and around little 'ole TCU. The more time passes, the more fans like to blame the departed coaches.

Just finished watching this one on DVR, very conservative 2nd half by both sides. I know Phillips can't throw, but if you want to know why UW has six losses, that's a big part of the answer, thin WR corps and instability to say the least this year at QB.

Agree with whoever said the Punter was player of the game.

Typical FSU...letting the other team stick around...it's what cost them against NC State.

This isn't much fun to watch from an FSU fan perspective. If you win, it's because you're expected to win. If you lose, it's considered a disaster. there's no real upside.

The Los Angeles' Times' Bill Dwyre: "The Wisconsin Badgers slinked out of Pasadena again Tuesday, defeated for the third straight year in the Rose Bowl. The good news was, by now, they certainly know the backroads out of town."

he treats readers like garbage, his writing isn't anything special, he never breaks any news you cannot find elsewhere just as quickly and he covers for the coaches while dumping on the kids repeatedly. he's the epitome of 8sskissing twerp

So after being the only B1G team not to disappoint pre-conference play, the Cats come out of bowl season the only B1G to win... If only they'd remembered that games last 4 quarters IN conference play, too. Both the Penn State and Mich games should have been wins - only against Nebraska were they clearly outplayed and lucky to be in a position to blow it.

...just imagine how much more enjoyable everyone would have found a Notre Dame-Northwestern national title bout! Think how much fun folks would have had claiming that the consolation title game between Oregon and Alabama was really the battle of the two best teams in the country.

I don't think Ohio State would have been in the championship game and that goes double for Northwestern.

Any BCS conference undefeated is playing in the title game over any one loss team...

it's loony tunes to think ohio state would have been in the championship game given the nature of the big10 in 2012.
