David Luiz didn't train today. He may really be going to Arsenal which seems kind of insulting to him. "But you won't be able to replace me in the market!" "Naw, we're good. Vaya con dios!"

Luiz has always seemed like one of the harder players to evaluate.

My body is ready for a Gooner Mustafi/Luiz pairing.

Luiz has always seemed like one of the harder players to evaluate.

I've got him in the camp of when it's good it's good, but when it's bad it's spectacularly bad.
   205. spivey Posted: August 07, 2019 at 02:22 PM (#5869207)
Luiz worked well in Conte's back 3/5 because he is a good ball winner and good ball distributor, but when he went and Sideshow Bob'ed it up, Azpilcueta was there to cover for him. Luiz is very good, he's just not reliable. I always thought he'd be a good fit as a DM, but I guess it makes sense that teams want to play you as far back as they can get away with, to maximize the amount of talent/scoring on the field.
   206. Shooty would run in but these bone spurs hurt! Posted: August 07, 2019 at 02:22 PM (#5869208)
I think Luiz and Mustafi will be functional, but there will be at least one game where they collectively implode and it will be glorious.
   207. spivey Posted: August 07, 2019 at 02:26 PM (#5869211)
Mustafi, as near as I can tell, is one of the worst center backs in the league. I'm not just talking for a top 6 team, I mean period. I'd say he's past it, but I'm not sure he was ever good. But I found him to be abysmal last year.
   208. Shooty would run in but these bone spurs hurt! Posted: August 07, 2019 at 02:28 PM (#5869212)
Mustafi has plays where he just quits for some reason. He's a weird case. When he does it I think surely Arsenal have to drop him now but not only don't they drop him, they seem committed to him for another year. So, I don't know, man. Not my problem!

Re : Luiz

Off the top of my head I think the only player I can come up with in recent PL history that inspires as wide a range of opinion amongst knowledgeable people is Ozil.
   210. the Centaur Nipple Paradox (CoB). Posted: August 07, 2019 at 02:29 PM (#5869215)
Could it be???

Tottenham have reached a club-to-club agreement with Real Betis to sign midfielder Giovani Lo Celso. #THFC hope to complete deal for 23yo Argentina international before deadline. Talks to sign 19yo Fulham left-back Ryan Sessegnon ongoing, transfer set to be completed on Thur #FFC

   211. J. Sosa Posted: August 07, 2019 at 02:37 PM (#5869221)
With Mustafi it seems like some kind of mentality issue. At the risk of being an arm chair analyst, he has always seemed like the kind of guy that would benefit from a sports psychologist. Defenders are going to be an island sometimes and look bad, but it seems like it snowballs for him after a bad play.

Luiz has periods where he completely loses any sense of spatial awareness. I am not sure I have ever seen a high level defensive player exhibit as much lack of coherence as he did in the Brazil World Cup. But he is also a genius that sees plays that other players don’t.
   212. spivey Posted: August 07, 2019 at 02:42 PM (#5869226)
Son's goal here (starting around 1:05) where he sends Luiz to the shadow realm is just the kind of play that is unforgivable from a CB. The angle taken by Luiz is just absurd. But 90% of the time, he's really good. His mistakes lead to goals, though.
   213. Shooty would run in but these bone spurs hurt! Posted: August 07, 2019 at 02:56 PM (#5869238)

ESPNFC

19.59 BST: Real Madrid have firmly moved into the race for Neymar's signature, with Sport reporting that Los Blancos have submitted an offer of €120m plus Luka Modric to Paris Saint-Germain. A source told ESPN FC that Modric missed Madrid's preseason friendly at Red Bull Salzburg on Wednesday because of an injury, not as he was set to leave the club.
   218. J. Sosa Posted: August 07, 2019 at 04:02 PM (#5869272)
Barca ticking off PSG and PSG buying Neymar in response was popcorn worthy at the time. If they then sell him to Madrid for couch cushion money and Luka Modric it would be incredibly petty and spiteful.

I love it.
   219. aberg Posted: August 07, 2019 at 04:06 PM (#5869275)
I would be on the phone with Madrid as soon as Neymar signs on trying to get Vinicius. He's really good.
   220. spivey Posted: August 07, 2019 at 04:07 PM (#5869277)
I'm torn between thinking Neymar is being underrated/undervalued at this point in his career, and thinking that maybe he's just an injury prone head case and getting out actually does make sense.

Well Sane has maybe torn his ACL so that's a huge bummer.
   224. frannyzoo Posted: August 07, 2019 at 05:32 PM (#5869303)
As always, but especially if Neymar ends up across town, I'd like Atletico to ask Isco: "Are you tired of the insanity yet? Because if you are..." What a waste of prime years, although he's still only 27.

   225. aberg Posted: August 07, 2019 at 05:32 PM (#5869304)
Seems like Arsenal will end up with Luiz and Tierney. Not the best defenders in the world, but a significant upgrade from where they were last year. I think they'll have a good shot to compete with the hoard of teams below the top 3 (ManU, Chelsea, Leicester, Everton, Wolves all seem to have a shot).
   226. spivey Posted: August 07, 2019 at 05:44 PM (#5869310)
Arsenal seem a clear tier above Man U and Chelsea to me right now, if they get those guys.

I think it depends on how well they figure out how to use Auba, Lacazette, and Pepe together (and maybe Ozil too) If they can find a way for the four of them to play at the top of a 4-2-3-1 and still defend passably, they'll be pretty good.
   228. the Centaur Nipple Paradox (CoB). Posted: August 07, 2019 at 06:43 PM (#5869329)
I will believe it when he is signing on the line that is dotted ... and, frankly, maybe not even then, but:

Paulo Dybala está muy cerca de llegar al Tottenham. Se espera que para mañana se desenrede el último obstáculo para su fichaje: los derechos de imagen. Poch cerca de contar con el delantero argentino que rechazó al United.

Seems like United (Pogba) and Spurs (Eriksen) -- one or the other -- are at some risk that Real will swoop in after the EPL transfer deadline closes. The other top teams don't appear to be at risk.

More on that, from Alastair Gold

Clever solution by Betis and Spurs as presumably loan fee will be deducted from eventual transfer next summer so PSG get smaller cut from their sell-on clause. It also frees up more Spurs funds for tomorrow and/or is less of a financial gamble if Eriksen doesn't leave this month.

Seems like something that will get written into every sell-on clause in every contract from now on, but good for Betis for exposing the loophole.

Lo Celso and Sessegnon are having medicals and somehow, beyond my belief, Dybala to Spurs appears not just to be a possibility, but a probability.

Supposed "deets" on the Lo Celso deal"

Reported figures on Lo Celso deal:

- €16m loan fee
- obligation to buy with CL qualification
- Betis get €30m in 2 years
- Betis keep 20% of rights
- PSG get €3.8m
- Rosario Central get €1.2m https://t.co/GyykQc5mFF

Dybala deal is not dead yet, folks. Juventus and Spurs trying to work out how to get around the image rights. Reports in Italy that they may structure it as a loan with an obligation to buy later so the image rights fiasco can be untangled later. I would say I'm pessimistic but the deal is not yet dead.

This is why I don't think it will get done. These image rights have been in litigation for a long time now so I don't see how they get it sorted in the next few hours. Still, it's pretty gratifying that that was all that held this up. Dybala was ready to come. Spurs are wearing their big boy pants!

I suggest "untangling the Malta fiasco" by having an Iranian tanker dock there.

Given how sceptical I was about this transfer from the very beginning this is no surprise; but, if it truly does come down to being unable to reach a reasonable agreement with a bunch of Maltese ####-waffles over "image rights", well, I ... almost want to interview everyone involved and make a documentary about it.

   256. spivey Posted: August 08, 2019 at 09:15 AM (#5869463)
I do think McTominay will be a solid DM, but he's not proven it for a full year, and it's crazy that Man U was so easily overrun in midfield last year, and the best guy they had to counter that (Herrera) has left, and they haven't replaced him, like you said. I mean, their midfield has actually gotten worse!

I also fully agree with #247 wrt Dybala. I think Juventus are pretty keen to get something done here so I wonder how much of the stories they're feeding to the media, because they realize another year where Dybala underperforms or isn't used will hurt his value even more. I think it's fair to say his value right now is reasonably lower than it was 1-2 years ago.
   257. spivey Posted: August 08, 2019 at 09:23 AM (#5869465)
I think I'm more excited about Leicester/Wolves this weekend than Chelsea/Man U. I think Leicester and Wolves are the kind of teams that are gonna go at each other, each trying to get 3 points. Two of my favorite teams from last year, and Leicester only got more exciting (worse defensively, and better offensively).
   258. Mefisto Posted: August 08, 2019 at 09:35 AM (#5869468)
Chelsea are hard to predict: new coach, lots of new players. If Lampard succeeds, I think they'll be top 4 for sure, with United left out and probably Arsenal too (though if all the transfers come through, Arsenal will be better).

The data charts for McTominay are … not encouraging. And there's still the issue of Fred (?) replacing Herrera.
   259. jmurph Posted: August 08, 2019 at 09:41 AM (#5869471)
I think it depends on how well they figure out how to use Auba, Lacazette, and Pepe together (and maybe Ozil too) If they can find a way for the four of them to play at the top of a 4-2-3-1 and still defend passably, they'll be pretty good.

Yeah I'm bullish on Arsenal this year, I think they're at least co-favorites for 4th along with Chelsea.
   260. spivey Posted: August 08, 2019 at 09:41 AM (#5869472)
Hazard completely carried Chelsea to top 4 last year. Willian and Pedro are of the age where we should assume each year will be worse than the last, and they already are spotty goal scorers. Loftus-Cheek I think was ready to step up, but will miss most/all of the year. Their strikers are Giroud, Abraham, and Michy, right? I just don't see where the goals are going to come from unless Pulisic delivers big. I'm excited to do our picks, but I think the transfer window probably still has a wrinkle or two to throw at us.
   261. jmurph Posted: August 08, 2019 at 09:46 AM (#5869473)

Chelsea seem unlikely get off to a good start. Kante is injured, as is H-O. As spivey correctly says, their strikers are iffy. They could be top 4 or they could fall out of contention early.

I've seen Twittersphere speculation that Lo Celso was done months ago but the parties agreed to pretend to drag it out till the last day to help Betis management look like they really tried to squeeze Spurs for every dime. Could be random BS but the odds of Lo Celso to Spurs holding at like 1-12 or whatever it was suggests something like that may indeed have been the case.

Still nothing official on David Luiz to Arsenal. It would be proper bantz if Chelsea strung Arsenal along all day so they couldn't go to a plan B and then told them to #### off at the deadline.

Evidently Steve McClaren referred to Lo Celso--a full Argentina international who was a regular in the 11 at the latest Copa America--as an unknown. No wonder he keeps getting the sack.

Arsenal made some good deals but it would have made a lot more sense to sell one of the strikers. I really don’t like wasting PEA on the left. Maybe no deals were out there to be made but selling one striker, keeping the other, and flanking him with Iwobi and Pepe would have made a lot of sense.

Only a loan!

Nope! It's a transfer after all.

@ Shooty

I can only imagine your tiff with CFC after: this little dance.

Dudelange in action again this year. They already advanced past a team at their level (near the bottom), and now they face a team that's even worse than they are: Nomme JK Kaiju. If they advance this round they might actually have to pull off an upset in the playoff round to once again be the worst team in the Europa group stage.

Actually, scratch that. If Dudelange advances (already up 2-0 in the first half of the first leg), they will take on Georgia's Saburtalo, a team at their (low) level, or potentially Armenia's Ararat, a team even worse. Looks like Dudelange is 50/50 to make the group stages again this year. Would probably again be the least fancied team there, though as a known quantity now maybe not.

On the one hand, I think you're right they are a bit redundant. But on the other hand, they are their best 2 players. I'm torn on just trying to make it work.

Has anyone seen confirmation on the Iwobi and Luiz deals?

Yes, I know.

I was too lazy to make the update to the update of the update to the original story ...

Is Carter-Vickers any good? He played 30 matches for Swansea last season who finished 10th.

After getting relegated Stoke finished 16th in the Championship. Looking at their squad they have a bunch of guys who I recognize, so a lot of them were at least Premier League regulars. I'd hope after playing so much for a Championship team last season, he could get on a lower-level Premier League team this season.

Well, define "good".

He's certainly one of the best CBs in the world (n.b. this is tautology at its most basic).

He's also, very likely, not good enough to start for a club that wants to at least be in the running for the PL or CL.

I think he will get some PL starting time down the table, but that's about it (which isn't nothing, truly).

A CB that is a starter on a Premier League team. This is purely for National Team reasons. I'm seeing Miazga is going back to Reading again, so better than him?

Lower to Mid level PL starter is where I see CCV's ceiling.

So ... damn near a star for the USMNT?

I do appreciate the entertainment value of the Dybala saga, but I find it vaguely amusing that in the end Tottenham ended up with the 2 transfers everyone expected all summer - Lo Celso and Sessegnon. That said, I think this was a good window for them. Granted, I think Ndombele alone makes it a good window. I'm super high on him.
   297. the Centaur Nipple Paradox (CoB). Posted: August 08, 2019 at 08:11 PM (#5869699)
The whole Dybala thing is a ..."whatevers".

Lo Celso and Ndombele are the meat, and I *am* happy, just would rather have not faffed about with GLC for a month or so, given where the fee ended up.

TRANSFER ORACLE

I thought I would use some data and whip up a few zingers to describe the most expensive transfer in for each Premiership side.

Arsenal
Nicolas Pépé – Young star of Ligue 1, but he had a massive breakout year and if he regresses to his early form Arsenal are going to rue this pick-up.

Aston Villa
Tyrone Mings – Injury prone, loses concentration. He has shown steady improvement over the past three seasons. If he can stay on the pitch, and keep the trend going, he will be worth the money. But that's more 'ifs' than I would be comfortable handing over £20m+ for.

AFC Bournemouth
Philip Billing – Does he solve the club’s need for a partner for Jefferson Lerma, last season’s great buy? He might even be better than Lerma. This was a good move.

Brighton
Neal Maupay – Another player who had a career-season in 2018/19. But I think this deal was much better value than Pépé.

Burnley
Jay Rodriguez – At £10m, this feels like a treading-water kind of deal. He’s 30, he’ll probably be mediocre, but he won’t stink.

Chelsea
Mateo Kovacic – The transfer ban leaves us with this £40m version of a player who doesn’t look like he’s four times better than Jay Rodriguez, except he’s five years younger.

Crystal Palace
James McCarthy – Thank goodness they got Victor Camarasa on loan.

Everton
Moise Kean – He’s young, so there is room for improvement. But he better improve.

Leicester City
Youri Tielemans – He was really good in the Premiership last season, but this was a career-year. But he’s only 22. This is an interesting purchase, because if Leicester can keep him at this new ‘established level’, it’s very good business.

Liverpool
Sepp van den Berg – Not really enough data to assess this one, but he was only £1.3m

Manchester City
Rodrigo – That’s a lot of money, but he’s pretty good. I would say ‘a nicely judged price, if you can afford it’.

Manchester United
Harry Maguire – Rodrigo was 3/4ths the price and probably about as good. Bad business, but he’s the sort of player ManU needed. Could they have got better value from someone else?

Newcastle United
Joelinton – I am going to say Newcastle paid a premium, possibly because he is Brazilian, possibly because Mike Ashley is trying to look good in order to survive trips to and from the stadium. I think he’s going to be slightly disappointing, but better value than Pépé.

Norwich City
Sam Byram – Only 750k and probably as good as James McCarthy who cost £3m. Norwich City are one of my picks to go down.

Sheffield United
Oli McBurnie – At £18m I really like this signing. I think he’s going to be better than some other signings (Joelinton, Pépé), if his team-mates can give him chances.

Southampton
Danny Ings – Let’s see, Soton splurged £18m on a 27-year-old who had his best season since he was in the Championship. They’ll get 10 goals from him and think they were smart.

Tottenham Hotspur
Tanguay Ndombele – What a cool surname! At £55m smackers he had better be good. If numbers are to be believed, I would say he is the best talent in this group. And only 22!

Watford
Isamail Sarr – He looks like he is as good as Billing. What’s that? He was twice the price? Oh dear. I guess that makes up for a free Danny Welbeck.

West Ham United
Sébastien Haller – He looks good. I mean, like better than Joelinton or Pépé, and well worth the money Pity he is a striker playing for the Hammers. That means he will probably disappoint.

Wolverhampton Wanderers
Raul Jiménez – Another regression candidate, but console yourself, Wanderers’ fan, with the idea that you are paying a bit for a bargain last season.

I will do requests (Premiership only), but I probably won't be able to get them in before tomorrow's match.
