OT: Soccer Thread (World Cup)

We’ve gotten through Champions League and most of the relegation/promotion stuff so we may as well focus on the World Cup. And what a World Cup, Buffon playing his sixth, Pulisic making his WC debut, quality on-site reporting from Fox and two time Copa America champs Chile just part of what should make for an amazing tournament!  Plus of course the the family-friendly, inclusive atmosphere sure to be fostered by the Russians.

Group A - Russia, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Uruguay
Group B - Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Iran
Group C - France, Australia, Peru, Denmark
Group D - Argentina, Iceland, Croatia, Nigeria
Group E - Brazil, Switzerland, Costa Rica, Serbia
Group F - Germany, Mexico, Sweden, South Korea
Group G - Belgium, Panama, Tunisia, England
Group H - Poland, Senegal, Colombia, Japan

2. England are playing a 3-5-2. Young and Trippier are the outside shuttlers.

ah thanks.

Sterling would be Neymar's Clone if he could finish, right?

If he had Neymar's finishing, close control, passing and vision, yes.

Sterling is really good and people should cease with this stuff.

4th most productive dribbler in the World Cup so far.
He's also a fine finisher.

It's not coming home.

Can't really blame Kyle Walker for not being as nimble as he should have been.

High kick!

Howard Webb Syndrome diagnosed.

Heckuva goal. What's the "high kick" rule?
   2907. Shredder Posted: July 11, 2018 at 03:27 PM (#5708561)
Weird how anyhwere else on the pitch, that's almost certainly a foul, but you can't really call a goal back for that.
2908. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: July 11, 2018 at 03:27 PM (#5708562)
That was an amazing, amazing goal. Wow.

Heckuva goal. What's the "high kick" rule?

Above chest high is dangerous play if there is another player in the area

Heckuva goal. What's the "high kick" rule?
When I was a kid it was "dangerous play" and entirely a judgment call. Not really sure what the FIFA guidelines are.

I don’t follow soccer much, is Howard Webb the Joe West of soccer?

I thought I was comparing him to Neymar.

Well yeah that's fair!
   2914. Random Transaction Generator Posted: July 11, 2018 at 03:29 PM (#5708568)
If the ref whistled that a no-goal because of high kick, then the conspiracy theorists would have gone ballistic.

England very nearly just Classic Englanded.

England is looking pretty Englandy.
2921. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: July 11, 2018 at 03:30 PM (#5708576)
Croatia is going to catch England at the back if England doesn't get more careful.

I CALLED IT (even though the first shot hit the post and the second was right at Pickford).
   2922. PreservedFish Posted: July 11, 2018 at 03:30 PM (#5708578)
If the Croat had torn Trippier's face open with his cleat (Trippier was diving low for a header), but still contacted the ball and still scored, would that be a high kick?
   2923. strong silence Posted: July 11, 2018 at 03:32 PM (#5708580)
PASTE
Who was the ump that missed the easy call at first base in Game 6 of the 1985 Cardinals vs. Royals WS? Denkinger? If so, that is Howard Webb.

I thought I was comparing him to Neymar.

Me too! I was saying that if he could finish better he'd basically be Neymar!

Man this game is ######' intense.
2925. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: July 11, 2018 at 03:34 PM (#5708583)
Rebic has done an amazing job pressing high up the pitch. Never letting England be any type of comfortable at the back.

Lingard is NOT having a good game. I know Rashford is already on, but yeesh, sub him out.
2926. This is going to be state of the art wall Posted: July 11, 2018 at 03:35 PM (#5708584)
England gotta be careful pushing up here in possession. Croatia looks a step faster overall. One counter could be all they need.
   2927. strong silence Posted: July 11, 2018 at 03:35 PM (#5708585)
PF
I would have called a high kick. Usually, from what I have seen, a high kick is fair if all players can see it coming and if the offensive player has initiated it clearly before the defender initiates his play. Have you seen a bicycle kick? Almost never called a high kick.

Edit. To answer your question: I don't think an injury would have mattered in the refs evaluation.
2928. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: July 11, 2018 at 03:37 PM (#5708589)
Man, the combined Yugoslav team would be a monster in soccer.

What's the song English fans are singing to the tune of Oh Canada? (or is it a different tune that I mistook for Oh Canada?)
   2929. jmurph Posted: July 11, 2018 at 03:37 PM (#5708590)
Me too! I was saying that if he could finish better he'd basically be Neymar!

2930. Shooty would run in but these bone spurs hurt! Posted: July 11, 2018 at 03:39 PM (#5708592)
I was more complimenting Neymar than attacking Sterling. I feel like people underrate Neymar because he's annoying. Sterling is a good player but Neymar is in another tier.

If England somehow win this tournament, they need to build a damn statue of Pickford outside Wembley.

And as soon as I say that, he nearly gets chipped to finish off the Englanding.
2934. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: July 11, 2018 at 03:41 PM (#5708597)
Croatia has England on strings at the moment. This game has entirely turned around since the half.

According to MCoA's xG, England had 0.4 to 0.1 in the first half--totally stifled Croatia (jives with about what I saw, but I thought England would have close to 1 xG). I missed the second half, but xG had it as 0.6 to 0.1 in favor of Croatia. Did England really do nothing at all in the second half?

Yeah, I thought England was a bit more dangerous than that, but it was almost all Croatia.

That's only once the first, extremely low probability goal had occurred in the fifth minute. I'm surprised that Kane's chance had such a low percentage.

Rakitic and Modric are crazy good. Pickford made an amazing save right there.

He got the ball first, and only his follow-through got the man, and he wasn't diving in dangerously. That's unlikely to be a foul anywhere on the field, and it would never be a foul on a shot in the box. One argument is that the same contact is less likely to be deemed reckless on a shot because the consequences of not making the challenge (i.e. shot on goal) justify the extra risk of contact.

I guess they'd have to, if France wears the Blue. I have no idea how these things are decided.

The first part isn't true - he didn't touch the ball with his leading foot, the Croat kicked the ball and it bounced off some other part of Pickford's body. Then Pickford's cleat dug straight into the middle of the dude's body. Did I see it wrong? It's an absolutely obvious foul.

Not saying it should be a penalty, I'm just wondering if there are specific rules enshrining a goalie's above-the-lawness or if it's just that refs tend to be more lenient with them?
