Boy oh boy, do they need to buy a central defender or two this summer.
It's sad seeing the ride come to an end, but it's time to bring Caulker home.
A little bit. There's still a real good chance for 4th, but I just don't know what's missing right now. The central defense is out of whack, but that doesn't explain why the attack has dried up. The effort is there. I just don't know right now.
Yes. Yes it is. I guess I tempted fate with the comment about their easy run-in after the Swansea game.
There was an odd bit from the ESPN3 commentators at the end of the game where Bale slide in on a defender who leapt to avoid the challenge and went down afterward. The ref awarded a foul despite no contact and the commentators praised the defender for not staying down to try to get a booking for Bale. Has the game really gotten to the point where commentators need to praise a player NOT faking an injury/embellishing a fall/etc.?

I'm obviously no tactical expert, but there seemed to be very little creativity this game, other than the chance from Assou-Ekotto that was saved in the second half. There were just endless crosses pinged into the box to no effect. I don't feel like that should be the offensive gameplan for Spurs.
I can get on that bandwagon.
Spurs need a dose of scrappyness from a defensive wizard, the obvious candidate to whip them into shape would be Alex McLeish.
I am in no mood for laughter!
Guys I'd realistically be happy managing Spurs: Moyes, Lambert, Hughton and maybe Rafa Benitez. Maybe.
Too bad, because the slapstick comedy of Villa-Stoke starts in 20 minutes.
I'd remove Hughton and add Martinez and Holloway.
Yes.
I'd remove Hughton and add Martinez and Holloway.
I'd remove Holloway and add Rodgers. As long as Harry leaves, whatever.
Opposition figured this team out in January, and there's been no apparent effort to change it up, no Plan B. Assuming there was ever a Plan A of course. Careless and sloppy defending persists, as does the scarcely believable ineptitude at set pieces. Obvious weaknesses are not addressed.
The worst thing that happened to Spurs in 2012 was Newcastle playing like such s**t that Spurs were able to pummel them with that 4-4-2. Every time Harry's played that formation since, it's been a disaster. And he's done it in situations where the other team is virtually guaranteed to play three in midfield. Stupid stupid stupid.
Also, just like last season, all the key players look sluggish and jaded at the sharp end of the season because they play every f**king game. The only guy out there who looked consistently dangerous was Lennon, who's been forcibly "rotated" due to injury.
The honeymoon is over unless Spurs win every game the rest of the way, basically.
Have a look at your "minutes played" leaders. This year Good Old 'Appy 'Arry has done pretty much zero rotation of players with the end result of all your better creative players being jaded and not very influential.
Exactly. But of course Harry concluded from that game that Saha was a great buy and that 4-4-2 was viable against quality opposition.

Spot on again.
I would like to see Villa (and every other mid-table team) overtake Liverpool. King Kenny deserves no less.
Tbh I don't think Harry needs much encouragement to play 4-4-2!
On another note I can't believe that no other clubs were in for Cabaye and Cissé during the summer/winter, particularly Cissé.
Ben Arfa seems to be coming into form at the right time as well and looking good as he did before he got de Jonged. Could be a key player for France at the Euros if they take him.
I don't get why no one wanted Cisse either. Rafael Honigstein's description of him at Freiburg: He's like Darren Bent, but good.
edit: On review, not so soft though refs tend not to usually give handballs on those.
Looked like he got ball to me and there was barely any contact with the man, if any at all.
Soooo.... you'll probably not appreciate me saying I thought that sentence was going to end with "Sam Allerdyce".
Which is not a good sign, considering that I can't recall the last time we had a defence.
Whatever your needs are, Sven can be that guy.
Are you doubting the ability of James Perch and Mike Williamson? Pffshaw Baresi and Ayala had nothing on them.
And, one again, no mention of FFP. Do the writers think the Russian league is not in UEFA? To me it's such an obvious question for them to ask the club's representatives that I'm baffled it never comes up.
Alan Davies did nothing wrong and has a nice stash of death threats to show for it.
Please explain, please. What happened now?
Would love to see them win it. If they do, does that increase the chances Moyes leaves for greener pastures? That's the highest note he could realistically leave on.
If Spurs don't, then yeah, go Everton. Besides Liverpool fans, does anyone dislike Everton? They seem kind of cuddly from a distance.
Short version: Comedian mocks Liverpool for not playing on Hillsborough anniversary; Liverpool fans take it as an affront to all that's good and holy; chaos (or comedy, one of the two) ensues.
One of these days I'll actually have to delve into all that surrounds Hillsborough. As a Liverpool fan I should know more about it but alas, I don't.
Meh. I don't really follow that Go American code. Chelsea can sign 10 Americans and they could still go #### themselves. That said, I kind of dig Everton as I respect Moyes and they almost always put up a fight. It's a shame they don't have stronger ownership. FSG may end up making more money off Liverpool, but I think they would have had more fun running Everton as they aren't bogged down by that sense of WHAT SHOULD BE. Then again, Liverpool has the Anfield Rap which is possibly the greatest thing ever...
edit: The Hillsborough tragedy does seem like a must know for 'Pool fans. You should probably brush up on Heysel, too. Tottenham had some nasty incidents in Europe, as well, and there's no sense pretending it didn't happen. I'm very thankful my soccer fandom postdates the thug culture of English football.
Phil Neville
I think the only crime there was not being funny. On the other hand, it seems awful easy to get death threats from a certain extreme element of Liverpool support.
Phil Neville
Touche.
I agree with you. But we're not talking about any American, we're talking about Tim ####### Howard. Plus Everton's a fairly well run club. With no dog in the fight, I'm rooting for them to win the Cup.
Frankly, I think he's right, and I certainly think his case in no way disrespects the Hillsborough victims and their families. If he hadn't made fun of Dalglish, who was Liverpool's manager at the time, even though he made fun of Dalglish for things that had nothing to do with Hillsborough, there would be absolutely nothing even approaching inflammatory.
Davies's case is thus:
- Putting English clubs at a disadvantage because of this is wrong
- My mum died on a certain day, I don't stay in all day, it doesn't define my life that day, if Arsenal played I would be happy
- It was wrong when Tottenham did it to us, and I would postpone our game v. Chelsea to give them a fair crack at Barca, even though I hate Chelsea
- Man U and Rangers have both suffered tragedies and played on the anniversary of their tragedies without complaint (and both rememberances were very poignant)
Absolutely nothing there that is disrespectful. Instead one Liverpool blog (Rhubarb something) made out of whole cloth fabricated quotes and accusations of Davies being an anti-semite, which is laughable. If calling Tottenham scum and vermin (which is just bog-standard ephitets in England) is anti-semetic, it surely would have been called out by Ian Stone, who is one of the UK's more famous Jewish comedians.
They're really not, though. They're saddled with a ton of debt they can barely manage and they've really struggled to market the team outside of England. Moyes has been brilliant but, if he leaves, they could be Bolton very quickly which would suck.
Invoking Godwin's Law Hillsborough seems to be to Liverpool what Hitler/Nazis is in the States. No matter how well intentioned or reasonable a person may be (and I didn't read Davies remarks) you just can't discuss it in any sort of manner other than with complete sympathy to how Liverpool fans feel and come out ahead. It's one of those topics that I think people in the public eye are best off simply not mentioning because there is nowhere but down to go.
I'm not very knowledgable about Hillsborough. There was an FA Cup match, a riot happened and 96 people died including Steven Gerrard's cousin. That's about all I got.
Going back to Hillsborough -- like I said, it's a subject I should know more about, but the hysteria surrounding it ("DON'T BUY THE SUN!") is just something that I'm not overly interested in. I'd be amenable to any good online reads that any of you would recommend (Heysel included).
There wasn't a riot.
Basically the police poorly mismanaged where the fans were standing on the terraces (they were divided into pens, which were fenced off), one got dangerously overcrowded, and people were crushed to death.
There was basically a cover-up as well, which is why Justice for Hillsborough exists.
To be fair to the Scousers, as much as I am anti-LFC right now, they are eminently reasonable about not buying the Sun.
There's been zero alleged impropriety committed by the fans that day and official findings have backed this up. Nonetheless, the Sun ran this two days after Hillsborough. None of the allegations happened, and the Sun has never really apologized for it.
I'd seen that before but never realized it was two days after the incident. I always assumed it was like a year later or something on that order. Wow that's brutal.
Thanks.
This seems old news so maybe the project has fallen apart. Has anyone read the novel? It seems that it may be obscure and French so I'm going to guess none of us have.
Yup, was an epic goal. Talk about clownshoes defending though...
Subs: Jones, Jose Enrique, Agger, Aurelio, Suarez, Kuyt, Carragher.
Interesting lineup for Liverpool today.
Also an Everton supporter - makes Saturday even more interesting - as both Liverpool goalies will be out on red cards I think
What happened:
THE SUN: UNREPENTANT SHOOTY IN BEREAVED GOALIE OUTRAGE! 'BAN THIS MONSTER FROM UK' SAYS ANGRY MP.
Anybody watching DER SHOWDOWN tomorrow? I laughed at Sky Deutschland's hype, so reminiscent of Sky Sports here in the UK.
Carroll almost just scored an own goal, so maybe that would have been preferable.
Mock is too strong a word for what Davies did. All he did was point out the double standards and absurdity of them refusing to play on that date, said in the wider context of complaining about how the FA handles fixtures screws over Champions League clubs.
It's *anything* to do with Liverpool. Wilson wrote an article for the Guardian questioning if Gerrard was done as an influential player for Liverpool and got both death threats and gentle mocking from other journalists for being stupid enough to write something bad about Liverpool FC or one of their "heroes".
Showdown is a perfectly cromulent German word.
Also, I have deposited all my doomsday devices in a timer-sealed vault. So you can rest easy that I won't do anything too rash after the game ends.
Meanwhile...what I want tomorrow:
Dortmund, Atletico, a Juve/Lazio draw
I'm guessing I won't get any of the three, but would certainly enjoy at least 2 out of 3.
Really excited at the possibility of getting back up to the top level, where I'll be able to watch more than a match a month.
Portugal can play in the dark it seems. Ireland's are... interesting?
