Ah, the shambolic Spurs defending starts early today.
   202. Shooty is in the Trust Tree Posted: April 09, 2012 at 10:14 AM (#4100918)
I won't say this very often, but Ledley King looks bad so far.
   203. Shooty is in the Trust Tree Posted: April 09, 2012 at 10:33 AM (#4100943)
Ledley gets away with one and then Defoe levels. Ledley needs to get subbed out at the half.
   204. Shooty is in the Trust Tree Posted: April 09, 2012 at 10:45 AM (#4100956)
So much for subbing for Ledley. Kaboul is coming off injured and Ryan Nelsen on.
   205. Mattbert Posted: April 09, 2012 at 10:56 AM (#4100964)
Admiral Nelsen and the zombie corpse of Ledley King do not inspire confidence in defense. The only thing that looks strong at the back is the giant fork sticking out of Ledley's.

Boy oh boy, do they need to buy a central defender or two this summer.

It's sad seeing the ride come to an end, but it's time to bring Caulker home.

198: Nope, you've got it -- it's Lalas (although Rossi is likely technically correct, I meant Americans who featured for the USMNT). Between Lalas and Bradley, have there been any other Americans who have gotten a run of games (i.e. not Onyewu) in Serie A?
   208. Crispix Attacks 2: Swag Airlines Posted: April 09, 2012 at 11:28 AM (#4101012)
The unfortunate Danny Szetela had a run of games for a team that had just been relegated from Serie A.

The dream is dying.
   210. Swedish Chef Posted: April 09, 2012 at 11:42 AM (#4101037)
Maybe it's time to derail Newcastle by Pardew-for-England talk.

So, now is the time to panic if you're a Spurs fan, right?

Apparently it already is time for sad resignation.
   213. Textbook Editor Posted: April 09, 2012 at 11:49 AM (#4101052)
I'm also no longer persuaded by the "Spurs have an easier run from here on out!" argument.

A little bit. There's still a real good chance for 4th, but I just don't know what's missing right now. The central defense is out of whack, but that doesn't explain why the attack has dried up. The effort is there. I just don't know right now.

So, now is the time to panic if you're a Spurs fan, right?

Yes. Yes it is. I guess I tempted fate with the comment about their easy run-in after the Swansea game.

There was an odd bit from the ESPN3 commentators at the end of the game where Bale slide in on a defender who leapt to avoid the challenge and went down afterward. The ref awarded a foul despite no contact and the commentators praised the defender for not staying down to try to get a booking for Bale. Has the game really gotten to the point where commentators need to praise a player NOT faking an injury/embellishing a fall/etc.?

The central defense is out of whack, but that doesn't explain why the attack has dried up.

I'm obviously no tactical expert, but there seemed to be very little creativity this game, other than the chance from Assou-Ekotto that was saved in the second half. There were just endless crosses pinged into the box to no effect. I don't feel like that should be the offensive gameplan for Spurs.
   216. Shooty is in the Trust Tree Posted: April 09, 2012 at 11:54 AM (#4101063)
If Harry does leave for England, I'll take some of that David Moyes action at Spurs if they can pry him away from Everton. Whatever it is he does, Everton doesn't weaken down the stretch. 4-0 over Sunderland today.
   217. Textbook Editor Posted: April 09, 2012 at 11:55 AM (#4101064)
There's just as much chance they miss Europe completely as take a CL spot at this point.

Spurs need a dose of scrappyness from a defensive wizard, the obvious candidate to whip them into shape would be Alex McLeish.

I am in no mood for laughter!

Guys I'd realistically be happy managing Spurs: Moyes, Lambert, Hughton and maybe Rafa Benitez. Maybe.

Too bad, because the slapstick comedy of Villa-Stoke starts in 20 minutes.

Yeah, I felt the same way. There was a ton of talent forward for Spurs, but they weren't linking up, they often seemed to be playing the same position or no position at all, and they're not going to break down a well-coached defense like that. In the last 20-30 min, they reminded me of a poor man's version of Argentina's world cup side.

I'd remove Holloway and add Rodgers. As long as Harry leaves, whatever.

Opposition figured this team out in January, and there's been no apparent effort to change it up, no Plan B. Assuming there was ever a Plan A of course. Careless and sloppy defending persists, as does the scarcely believable ineptitude at set pieces. Obvious weaknesses are not addressed.

The worst thing that happened to Spurs in 2012 was Newcastle playing like such s**t that Spurs were able to pummel them with that 4-4-2. Every time Harry's played that formation since, it's been a disaster. And he's done it in situations where the other team is virtually guaranteed to play three in midfield. Stupid stupid stupid.

Also, just like last season, all the key players look sluggish and jaded at the sharp end of the season because they play every f**king game. The only guy out there who looked consistently dangerous was Lennon, who's been forcibly "rotated" due to injury.

The honeymoon is over unless Spurs win every game the rest of the way, basically.

Birmingham all over West Ham right now. No way am I watching that ####### Villa - Stoke game.

Newcastle were always pretty likely to be humped in that game no-matter what formation Spurs played as we had no midfield or attack.

Have a look at your "minutes played" leaders. This year Good Old 'Appy 'Arry has done pretty much zero rotation of players with the end result of all your better creative players being jaded and not very influential.

Exactly. But of course Harry concluded from that game that Saha was a great buy and that 4-4-2 was viable against quality opposition.

So far so good. Weimann is probably the nicest thing that has happened at Villa in this season, weak field in that category though.

I would like to see Villa (and every other mid-table team) overtake Liverpool. King Kenny deserves no less.

Tbh I don't think Harry needs much encouragement to play 4-4-2!

On another note I can't believe that no other clubs were in for Cabaye and Cissé during the summer/winter, particularly Cissé.

Ben Arfa seems to be coming into form at the right time as well and looking good as he did before he got de Jonged. Could be a key player for France at the Euros if they take him.

West Ham is just pounding at Birmingham now, trying to get the equalizer.

I don't get why no one wanted Cisse either. Rafael Honigstein's description of him at Freiburg: He's like Darren Bent, but good.
   233. Shooty is in the Trust Tree Posted: April 09, 2012 at 02:12 PM (#4101255)
West Ham complete the comeback on a really, really soft penalty call.

edit: On review, not so soft though refs tend not to usually give handballs on those.
   234. Shooty is in the Trust Tree Posted: April 09, 2012 at 02:19 PM (#4101260)
West Ham deserved at least the draw there. They gave Birmingham everything they had. I think these 2 clubs will be meeting again next month.

Annoyed at Birmingham for not holding onto the win, but still, points dropped for West Ham is a good thing.

Soooo.... you'll probably not appreciate me saying I thought that sentence was going to end with "Sam Allerdyce".

Which is not a good sign, considering that I can't recall the last time we had a defence.

I'm gonna feel a lot less good about the feel good story of 'Gladbach if they don't get three points today at Werder Bremen. Meanwhile, my mighty Don Quixotes...your goats from Verona...will extend Milan's misery in a thrilling dismantling. Okay, that's insane. I'll just take the 'Gladbach points, please.

Another Anzhi article

And, one again, no mention of FFP. Do the writers think the Russian league is not in UEFA? To me it's such an obvious question for them to ask the club's representatives that I'm baffled it never comes up.

Meh. I don't really follow that Go American code. Chelsea can sign 10 Americans and they could still go #### themselves. That said, I kind of dig Everton as I respect Moyes and they almost always put up a fight. It's a shame they don't have stronger ownership. FSG may end up making more money off Liverpool, but I think they would have had more fun running Everton as they aren't bogged down by that sense of WHAT SHOULD BE. Then again, Liverpool has the Anfield Rap which is possibly the greatest thing ever...

Tottenham had some nasty incidents in Europe, as well, and there's no sense pretending it didn't happen. I'm very thankful my soccer fandom postdates the thug culture of English football.

I listened to it when it came out - last week, so talk about a weird, slow burning news story - and I never even considered it turning into something.

Frankly, I think he's right, and I certainly think his case in no way disrespects the Hillsborough victims and their families. If he hadn't made fun of Dalglish, who was Liverpool's manager at the time, even though he made fun of Dalglish for things that had nothing to do with Hillsborough, there would be absolutely nothing even approaching inflammatory.

Davies's case is thus:

- Putting English clubs at a disadvantage because of this is wrong
- My mum died on a certain day, I don't stay in all day, it doesn't define my life that day, if Arsenal played I would be happy
- It was wrong when Tottenham did it to us, and I would postpone our game v. Chelsea to give them a fair crack at Barca, even though I hate Chelsea
- Man U and Rangers have both suffered tragedies and played on the anniversary of their tragedies without complaint (and both rememberances were very poignant)

Absolutely nothing there that is disrespectful. Instead one Liverpool blog (Rhubarb something) made out of whole cloth fabricated quotes and accusations of Davies being an anti-semite, which is laughable. If calling Tottenham scum and vermin (which is just bog-standard ephitets in England) is anti-semetic, it surely would have been called out by Ian Stone, who is one of the UK's more famous Jewish comedians.
   268. Shooty is in the Trust Tree Posted: April 10, 2012 at 11:48 AM (#4102664)
Plus Everton's a fairly well run club.

They're really not, though. They're saddled with a ton of debt they can barely manage and they've really struggled to market the team outside of England. Moyes has been brilliant but, if he leaves, they could be Bolton very quickly which would suck.

The legions of Liverpool fans who act like they survived Auschwitz and try to ruin the career of anyone who disagrees are an embarrassment for English soccer in general. It reminds me of the "pro-life" people here whose main tool on behalf of "life" is the death threat.

Invoking Godwin's Law Hillsborough seems to be to Liverpool what Hitler/Nazis is in the States. No matter how well intentioned or reasonable a person may be (and I didn't read Davies remarks) you just can't discuss it in any sort of manner other than with complete sympathy to how Liverpool fans feel and come out ahead. It's one of those topics that I think people in the public eye are best off simply not mentioning because there is nowhere but down to go.

I'm not very knowledgable about Hillsborough. There was an FA Cup match, a riot happened and 96 people died including Steven Gerrard's cousin. That's about all I got.

Just saw Ben Arfa's goal from yesterday -- how brilliant is that turn at midfield? Great, great stuff.

Going back to Hillsborough -- like I said, it's a subject I should know more about, but the hysteria surrounding it ("DON'T BUY THE SUN!") is just something that I'm not overly interested in. I'd be amenable to any good online reads that any of you would recommend (Heysel included).

There wasn't a riot.

Basically the police poorly mismanaged where the fans were standing on the terraces (they were divided into pens, which were fenced off), one got dangerously overcrowded, and people were crushed to death.

There was basically a cover-up as well, which is why Justice for Hillsborough exists.

Going back to Hillsborough -- like I said, it's a subject I should know more about, but the hysteria surrounding it ("DON'T BUY THE SUN!") is just something that I'm not overly interested in.

To be fair to the Scousers, as much as I am anti-LFC right now, they are eminently reasonable about not buying the Sun.

There's been zero alleged impropriety committed by the fans that day and official findings have backed this up. Nonetheless, the Sun ran this two days after Hillsborough. None of the allegations happened, and the Sun has never really apologized for it.

I'd seen that before but never realized it was two days after the incident. I always assumed it was like a year later or something on that order. Wow that's brutal.

There wasn't a riot.

Basically the police poorly mismanaged where the fans were standing on the terraces (they were divided into pens, which were fenced off), one got dangerously overcrowded, and people were crushed to death.

Thanks.

Evidently, Heysel is going to be a movie.

This seems old news so maybe the project has fallen apart. Has anyone read the novel? It seems that it may be obscure and French so I'm going to guess none of us have.

Just saw Ben Arfa's goal from yesterday -- how brilliant is that turn at midfield? Great, great stuff.

Yup, was an epic goal. Talk about clownshoes defending though...

Doni, Flanagan, Coates, Skrtel, Johnson, Henderson, Shelvey, Spearing, Maxi, Bellamy, Carroll.
Subs: Jones, Jose Enrique, Agger, Aurelio, Suarez, Kuyt, Carragher.

Interesting lineup for Liverpool today.

Liverpool goalie red-carded (according to Yahoo UK)? I assume they have another goalie on the bench - otherwise this game could get interesting real quick...

Also an Everton supporter - makes Saturday even more interesting - as both Liverpool goalies will be out on red cards I think

And Blackburn miss the penalty. Liverpool still up 2-0 but down a man.

What happened:
27 min: BLACKBURN MISS THE PENALTY!!! Amazing scenes. Jones comes on, Doni having the good grace to wish him the best as he departs. Yakubu steps up - and hits the worst penalty kick in the history of All Football. It's a terrible dink, just to the right of the keeper. Jones guesses the correct way, and snaffles the shot. The keeper - who has suffered personal tragedy recently with the loss of his son to leukemia - smiles broadly and instantly points to the heavens. A lovely, bittersweet moment.

25 min: RED CARD! AND LIVERPOOL LOSE ANOTHER KEEPER! Liverpool may be playing well, but Flanagan has been having a personal nightmare. A poor pass back goes straight to Hoilett, who is clear on goal with only Doni to beat. He looks to go round the keeper on the right. Doni, sprawling, brings the man down. He's got to go. Distraught, he does. Brad Jones will replace him. Flanagan, who will be getting a bollocking for his dismal display today, is the man sacrificed.

I don't wish anyone poorly, but I kind of hope Brad Jones pulls a hammy or something so Andy Carroll has to play in goal.

God I love the Guardian play by play:

Hats off to metrosexual Rovers, some hardcore Hi-NRG the soundtrack blasting from the PA as the players run out onto the Studio 54 dancefloor Ewood Park turf. I'm surprised the players have kits on - shiny codpieces and bronzed, oiled guns would be more appropriate, the participants riding white horses - but kits it is

I'm skipping today's games to watch Germany-England from Euro 72. Gunter Netzer is absolutely destroying England.

Anybody watching DER SHOWDOWN tomorrow? I laughed at Sky Deutschland's hype, so reminiscent of Sky Sports here in the UK.

What is it with Liverpool and keepers lately? They better have a supply of them handy at this rate.

Carroll almost just scored an own goal, so maybe that would have been preferable.

Short version: Comedian mocks Liverpool for not playing on Hillsborough anniversary; Liverpool fans take it as an affront to all that's good and holy; chaos (or comedy, one of the two) ensues.

Mock is too strong a word for what Davies did. All he did was point out the double standards and absurdity of them refusing to play on that date, said in the wider context of complaining about how the FA handles fixtures screws over Champions League clubs.

It's *anything* to do with Liverpool. Wilson wrote an article for the Guardian questioning if Gerrard was done as an influential player for Liverpool and got both death threats and gentle mocking from other journalists for being stupid enough to write something bad about Liverpool FC or one of their "heroes".

Andy Carroll scored--in the 90th minute. I almost don't believe it.

He scored in the sense it deflected off his noggin into the net. He hadn't a ####### clue that ball was coming towards his head.

Showdown is a perfectly cromulent German word.

Also, I have deposited all my doomsday devices in a timer-sealed vault. So you can rest easy that I won't do anything too rash after the game ends.

I don't care if they called it das Treffen der Giganten, it's still very SKY! and their style of hype.

Looks like Reading got the points today they need to confirm a reserved spot in the EPL next year. After last year's heartbreak, it seems only fair. Their run-in from here, Southampton aside, looks good and they have six points on Olympic Stadium Tenant X.

Meanwhile...what I want tomorrow:

Dortmund, Atletico, a Juve/Lazio draw

I'm guessing I won't get any of the three, but would certainly enjoy at least 2 out of 3.
   297. Baldrick Posted: April 10, 2012 at 08:50 PM (#4103451)
I won't feel safe until Reading secure guaranteed promotion, especially after seeing them miss automatic promotion on the final day a couple years ago, and failing to claw back the playoff win last year. Still, 6 points with 4 to go is a good place to be.

Really excited at the possibility of getting back up to the top level, where I'll be able to watch more than a match a month.

Don't know if we discussed this, but the Euro jerseys are out. Some of them are truly hideous--notably Poland, Germany's away kit and Crotia's long-worn table-cloth-at-a-Red-Sauce-Joint jersey--but a few aren't bad.

Link to the kits.

Portugal can play in the dark it seems. Ireland's are... interesting?

Sorry, I forget to include the link. Is it just me, or is that a logo for Three--a UK telecom company--on the Ireland shirts. Are they allowed to wear that?
