Fulham did make the Europa league finals a couple seasons ago but I think they played a lot of fringe guys in the early rounds and basically was able to make it to the final by treating it as most premier clubs treat the League Cup.

I think that was only the case for a couple of the away games where they had to travel to places like Bulgaria and central Russia (Amkar Perm). The lineup against CSKA Sofia is pretty bad.

But here's the away game at Shakhtar Donetsk, looks like a lot of regulars. Away at Basel, home against Sofia, home against Shakhtar, these all look a lot like the lineups they used in league games. The only trend I notice is a lack of Clint Dempsey and a lot of appearances by Simon Davies and someone named Kelly.
   602. Spivey Posted: April 20, 2012 at 11:55 PM (#4112000)
I'm pretty sure Dempsey was out a lot of their run in the Europa league, and he scored a pretty epic goal against Juventus when he came in as a late sub to advance them in the Europa League. Kelly has been a semi-regular fullback over the last few years, and Davies definitely got some burn especially if Dempsey would have been out. Fulham also took this year's Europa league pretty seriously this year starting from the very beginning.

Fulham has never won a trophy and I think they are actually an example of a team that takes a lot of contests seriously in the hopes of winning a trophy.

Does anyone know a good place around Midtown east to watch the El Classico?

I don't remember the early rounds of that year but I would imagine Fulham would be fielding stronger teams as they advanced. That goal was epic - to this day he claims it was a shot but it had to have been a cross.
   604. Ron J Posted: April 21, 2012 at 04:38 AM (#4112030)
Does anyone like Arjen Robben?

I knew nothing of him when Chelsea first signed him. Damien Duff's reaction (pissing and moaning about signing a player who played his position) made me want to see him play Duff out of the lineup. I really enjoyed his play that first year in Chelsea, and I still have a soft spot in my heart for him -- all thanks to Duff.

   605. Ron J Posted: April 21, 2012 at 04:45 AM (#4112031)
On Messi diving. I think it's clear he dives a fair amount in absolute terms, but dives less than just about any attacking player (in a major European league that is) on a per challenge basis. Hence a fair amount of talking past each other because no terms of reference were defined.

He doesn't go down if he has any chance of making the play and I think that's one reason for his amazing goal totals (albeit a minor one)

This Chelsea v Arsenal match is just incredibly wide open. I'm guessing lots of goals are coming at some point.

werder going with their trademark no defenders strategy.

It would be just like Bayern to undermine Dortmund's celebration by laying an egg here. Passive-aggressive bastards.

Another USMNT player to keep an eye on in the Bundesliga (well, at least until Kaiserslautern relegated) -- Andrew Wooten. Scored a goal today. This thread is the most I could find about him, as his wikipedia page isn't of much use.

Naldo is on fire!

If Müller were half the goalscoreer Naldo is, Bayern would have 6 by now...

In one of those ethical complexities, I'm glad for Hannover's sake to see Werder be Werder, but the Leverkusen result is maddening.

If this continues maybe Spurs will pay FA to unload Redknapp to England.

Portsmouth relegated. No big surprise there, but still a pretty incredible fall for them. Of course, the club is still around so that's something.
   619. frannyzoo Posted: April 21, 2012 at 01:54 PM (#4112205)
I love watching Barca (although I can, slightly, understand the irritations), but my favorite team to watch this year has been Dortmund. Thanks for the show guys.
   620. Swedish Chef Posted: April 21, 2012 at 02:11 PM (#4112214)
It would be ok for the Spurs to be this lousy if they only hurt themselves, but they should really care more for the poor little innocent teams like Aston Villa that are caught in the crossfire. Bad, bad Tottenham!
   621. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: April 21, 2012 at 02:13 PM (#4112218)
I'm not sure if that weird red card will even matter. Spurs right now are probably no more likely to score against 10 men than 11.
   622. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: April 21, 2012 at 02:26 PM (#4112233)
Since Spurs have apparently given up on the season, I just hope Newcastle hold off Chelsea for 4th.

Fire Redknapp!

Is it too late to send him to prison?

In other news, Barcelona and Real is playing yet another of their interminable overhyped games. This slightly noteworthy because Real is leading away.

Yeah - would have been nice to see this second half effort in the second half LAST week for Everton. Sets up nicely to make the Manchester derby kind of a big game (assuming a City win later of course...)

I was reading the match live commentary on Soccernet and the author seemed baffled at 5 minutes of extra time. I mean...there were six goals in the second half. That's a lot of celebration time to make up for.

These scenes in Genoa are profoundly depressing. I think my time with Italian football has neared its end. Maybe grading some papers will reignite my interest in time for Juve/Roma...but right now Serie A could just blow up for all I care.

What happened?

Just the usual, fireworks and fans storming the pitch, demanding the players' shirts because they're not fit to wear them. Granted, that was a bit unusual.

I was reading the match live commentary on Soccernet and the author seemed baffled at 5 minutes of extra time.

There's a German football saying, which goes 'The ball is round, and the game lasts 90 minutes.'* According to my father though, it's actually 'The ball is round, and the game lasts as long as Manchester United need to get a winner.'

*German football sayings are not renowned for being particularly profound...

Not to mention Rossi gathering the shirts, taking them to the Ultra hangout, having Sculli plead to keep the shirts, "talks" occurring between Sculli and one of the Ultras, the players being allowed to keep the shirts, putting the shirts back on, and, if that wasn't bad enough, the game actually being played after all that. The match commentary was sketchy, but it seems a point deduction could have resulted if the game was stopped and Genoa is now level with Lecce on points as it is.

Yeah, I'm still fed up about the whole thing.

Bye bye Wolves, have a speedy return.
   641. frannyzoo Posted: April 22, 2012 at 12:54 PM (#4112988)
Granted, the Wolves thing has me in a generally bad football mood, although that's been a foregone conclusion for over a month. That first league match with Barnsley (no offense) is still gonna sting, however.
   642. Swedish Chef Posted: April 22, 2012 at 01:07 PM (#4113003)
The sacking of McCarthy is probably the stupidest thing a prem club have done this season. They have to have the successor on the hook before they sack him.

It will be interesting to see, if City wins next week--no guarantee, of course--they have Newcastle and QPR to go. United has Swansea and Sunderland. Of those, seems like City would be the most likely to drop points but it seems like we're going to the last weekend one way or another.

That one goal being nearly 5% of Kaiserslautern's goals this season. At least as impressive a feat as scoring a hat-trick on a real team.

Edit: I say that as a FCK fan. This season consisted of parking the bus with all the windows rolled down.

Pep hasn't looked healthy for a couple of years now. I thought he might walk away after last year's CL title.

First goal today is HUGE. I think if Barca get it they win 4-1 or something on that order. If Chelsea get it becomes a fairly interesting chess match, how long can Chelsea park the bus?

I don't care if you all despise the Old Lady, but Juventus are fun as hell to watch this year. At least in the games I've seen, they press like crazy, with Vidal and Marchisio doing the legwork in the middle and Pirlo probes and picks passes. There's Del Piero popping up with a couple of random-but-critical goals in the past month, Antonio Conte's sideline antics and, well, Mirko Vucinic. Overall, it's an endearing group.

Juve have played excellent football this year, some really nice stuff. Ajax have been excellent as well. It's too bad Jan Vertonghen is leaving, otherwise they would be a fine dark horse pick in the CL.

Entire Spurs squad looked tired and out of ideas, an amazing change from where they were at the end of 2011.

And yet, so similar to where they were in early 2011: out of gas and playing like dog doo. How strange! It will take an absolute miracle over these last few weeks for Harry to keep his job, let alone be offered the England one.

Question for Spurs fans - is there a reason Gio dos Santos hasn't been getting more playing time?

Johnny Two Saints forged a reputation as a lazy player and a bit of a drunk in the early days of Harry's tenure. Harry's never fancied him, and Gio's never gotten more than the occasional token appearance to change anyone's mind. To be fair to Harry, it's quite possible Gio's never earned it.
   664. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: April 24, 2012 at 03:16 PM (#4114879)
Both sides have had to use a sub to replace an injured fullback. Does this benefit one team or the other? My gut would be that the exhaustion of chasing Barca around would make that sub more valuable to Chelsea than to Barcelona.
   665. Mattbert Posted: April 24, 2012 at 03:18 PM (#4114883)

I think Chelsea will miss Cahill's pace in the middle more than Barca will miss Pique.

Probably true. Although Barca seemed to have been trying to put Pique up against Drogba most of the time. And the only way Chelsea are getting a goal here seems to be by Drogba pulling one out of his ass. I think that just got somewhat more likely.

Edit: And now they are definitely going to need it...

Also, has anyone seen a good view of the sending off? I'm watching a bad stream and while the commentators called it a "moment of madness" the text commentaries I've read suggest there wasn't much to it.

The ESPN live text has this re: Terry the Dog
An off the ball incident and Sanchez has gone to ground. [Terry] kneed him in the hamstring. Quite obvious to me.

Terry is furious, but it was a blatent kick out. He thought the ref wouldn't see it, but he did.

Evidently the assistant ref drew the referee's attention to the incident from Terry.

I'm surprised they haven't put Essien in there (or maybe they will at halftime). He has experience at the back in big matches (central defense in the 2007 FA Cup Final, right back the next year in the Champions League final) and I would trust him in that role a lot more than Bosingwa in the middle or an out-of-position John Obi Mikel.

OK, one of these days I'll understand. If this score stands through 90 minutes does the away goal rule put Chelsea through or is the away goal rule only invoked after Extra time is played?

And there is no way this score stands up. I've got 5-1 Barca.

Terry's light years ahead of Zidane, unless Zidane had an affair I don't know about and is a racist.

Now now, don't sell Terry short. He also had that whole "make fun of American tourists after 9/11" thing going for him. He really sets a high bar.

I've said it before but he is the most fascinating athlete in the world in my opinion. The media absolutely fawn over him and give him the full Jeter and his play on the field often warrants it. But then he has these moments where he turns into some mix of Milton Bradley and Albert Belle, it's gripping.

Chelsea is ahead on away goals at the moment, yes. If Chelsea scores again, Barca would need 2 goals.

The game was over for two minutes there, now Chelsea have something to defend. But maybe they are better off attacking instead, even with 10 men, Barcas defense isn't at their best.

Is anybody surprised that Villa-Bolton is 0-0 at the half?

The carcass of Ferreira has to be better. Bertrand? I guess letting Alex go bit them in the ass. I remember Essien playing RB a couple seasons past but he seems to be a shell of his former self after all the injuries.

BTW, I was mostly going with the titanically overrated on the field, and not the prick angle with my Terry :: Zdane

Neither Ferreira nor Bertrand are on the bench. As I said in #679, my money is on Essien (who's actually a pretty decent pure defender, imho. I'd expect the middle more than the right, though, with his pace/absence of pace the way it is).

You're not going to find anyone who agrees that Zidane was titanically overrated on the field.

Zidane was a brilliant footballer subject to episodic moments of blind rage.

Terry is a thug who can play a bit. Recall him squeezing Puyol's dislocated finger in the first leg.

The media absolutely fawn over him and give him the full Jeter

I don't know what media you are reading but their love affair with Terry is over since long ago*, even assuming you park-adjusted the full Jeter to the UK, I would assume that would be the full Beckham.

*) Since that night in Moscow?

Now now, don't sell Terry short. He also had that whole "make fun of American tourists after 9/11" thing going for him. He really sets a high bar.

I forgot about that. Was he also in the Rio Ferdinand/Frank Lampard and groupies sex tape?

I don't know what media you are reading but their love affair with Terry is over since long ago

Weren't there people pushing for him to get the England captaincy back? Or was that all Capello's doing?

What is most likely of these remote possibilities:
a) Chelsea goes to the final
b) A goal is scored in Aston Villa-Bolton

The media that I read and hear of course! :-)

Seriously, it's mostly the game announcers so maybe it's more accurate to call it the Full McCarver.

Um...is there a c)?

Maybe its in the cards today for Chelsea. If Chelsea somehow survive they will be out Terry, Ramires and Ivanovic for the final.

I figured Bertrand and Ferreira would not be on the bench but Di Matteo obviously risked a thin defensive bench, especially against Barcelona.

More interestingly perhaps, if Chelsea do make the final, no Terry, no Ramires, no Ivanovich. Maybe no Cahill, depending on how bad he's got it...

Edit: Coked.

There certainly was no big concerted media campaign. From what I saw media generally supported the FA's stance against Capello. Of course, the loudmouths may have been paralyzed by having to support a slimy foreigner if they wanted to voice support for good old English Terry.

Wow, that Drogba move was amazing in its own way -- won the ball from the corner, skipped past Puyol and launched a shot on goal from just past the halfway line that forced a stretch save from Valdes.

There may still be Premier League football at Villa Park:
60: GOAL - WARNOCK. Out of nothing, N'Zogbia provides the spark this game has been lacking by bursting down the right, taking two Bolton defenders out of the game. He cuts it back superbly for Warnock to slide home from eight yards out.
