You also wouldn't expect Boras to be paid an annual retainer by the team like Raiola was, before he made that comment that is.
Even with their miserable form lately, you'd have to make them favorites for 4th again, I think. They still have a shot for 3rd as well.
Of course, that all gets thrown out the window when they lose to Blackburn tomorrow.
My French is even worse than my English, so "Go Quevilly!" or whatever it would be in the best French.
Alternately, "Allez l'USQ!"
And I don't think we needed the close up of Sandro puking on the field.
I hate that, when your team is leading by one goal and in total control. Because it only takes one slip to ruin the day*.
*) Not that Aston Villa is above slipping more than once, often in a hilarious fashion.
I like the choice, he's a good coach and he has managed national teams before, a plus when catapulted in shortly before the tournament starts.
Which means the job is his if he wants it. If he had been unwilling it wouldn't have been made public.
Bet Redknapp has sent word that he isn't available.
And, inevitably: England disappoints at Euro 2012 (Down!)
It's been like that from the beginning, starting with a massive UP at Halmstads BK, followed by a huge DOWN at Bristol; and then returning to Sweden to lick the wounds.
That he started so young also makes him kind of a relic, active managers that were managing in the 70's are rare (there's Ferguson, any more?).
Pastore, on the other hand, despite scoring a goal, has played awfully. No bite, no pace, and his passes have been pretty off as well. I've seen PSG a fair bit this year and Pastore has looked like a complete waste of money.
Head-to-head is the tiebreaker in Italy, first after that goal difference. I'm a bit sad that they changed the tiebreaking games they used to have for teams that were level on points in important spots (first place, european places and relegation).
Ah, I just assumed every league was on goal difference tiebreaker these days.
It sounds bizarre but 'Arry Hedgenappi himself not only spent 1976-79 playing for the original Seattle Sounders, but he was the assistant manager under fellow player-coach Jimmy Gabriel.
He's sort of being a downer, by discussing whether the FA will force Hodgson to pick Gerrard to sell more shirts and the inevitable media hounding of Hodgson, calling him a clown and clamoring for Redknapp. Somebody on Talkshite already compared Redknapp to Brian Clough, as if Clough didn't have more European Cups than Redknapp has major trophies.
I'm sure they won't make it to 3rd, but how nuts is it that Inter somehow made it back into the race.
Udinese and Napoli have what should be the easiest schedules (@Cesena, Genoa, @Catania and Palermo, @Bologna, Siena, respectively), and Lazio's run is pretty smooth other than the Inter match.
The Madonnina is the gilt statue of the Madonna at the peak of the Duomo in Milano.
I used to be able to see it from our front windows. Sniff.
I do enjoy the Man City "Adult SS Shirts" ads they have going on though. I mean fascism is nothing if not unsubtle...
Either half really. They did get slightly better towards the last 15 mins, but too little too late. City deserved the win, but it wasn't a good game.
United did nothing all game. Just two shots, and I don't think Hart was challenged all night. A poor performance, but all credit to City. They deserved it.
Blue moon -- you saw me standing alone...
City 1/2
United 2/1
Goals scored, City up by 2 in that department. They're also up 8 in GD so it would take quite the beat down by United the rest of the season to make up for that.
It certainly seemed to this untrained eye that United played "not to lose," and, in doing so, lost. I mean, I know Spurs' collapse may cost them the CL spot, but if Man U wind up losing the title, I think that would be seen as the bigger collapse, right?
Maybe they just wanted some of that ####### SS fashion they had displayed?
Valencia has been their second best player all year and can't get into the lineup? Park can't get a game in months and is playing in the most important game of the year?
Yeah, no choice about Evans. Injuries are a fact of life. Still, something I've been meaning to do is a plus/minus for every player (adjusting for quality of opposition). Never got around to it, but I'd bet serious money that the least successful alignment for Man U features Giggs out wide with Park playing any kind of role.
This is the worst defensive Man U team in a long time, and any success (quite a bit mind you) is built around two wide players supporting two strikers with plenty of support from the left and right backs. That's not how they played this game. Didn't work and I'm glad of it.
EDIT: Yeah Valencia has had a rough couple of games. Still, Giggs didn't rate to be an answer. Hasn't been effective all year out wide, and as noted he's lost enough speed that he's just not dangerous on the break -- important to the way United intended to play.
What's Milan like, ursus? I know that's quite a broad question, but I'm becoming intrigued by visiting there. And what is Rome like?
I know the broad regional differences and the idiosyncrasies of Italy as a whole, but I want to know a bit more from someone who's lived there.
I agree with this. City simply must have 2 wins; they cannot bank on United dropping points in their last two games.
Rome, on the other hand, can be a pain if you have to work there, but is a fabulous city to visit. We also lived there for several months, and the only thing that Milan does better is ethnic restaurants (which still pale to the likes of London or Paris, let alone New York or San Francisco).
It's very exciting stuff, and the big winners seem to be PSG.
Just to catch up, I'm kind of disappointed about the Hodgson appointment as I thought the Redknapp exit plan was in place. It's not that I think Harry is crap but his habit of burying useful players makes me frustrated. I just feel Harry has reached the level of where he can take the club. With Modric, Adebayor, King and Defoe likely not coming back, it would have been a good time for a new manager--cough, David Moyes, cough--to get a chance to reinvent the team a little. Ah well.
What else is going on? Freiburg is safe! They're are actually midtable-ish now, thankfully.
Marko Marin to Chelsea? Is that to make Juan Mata feel like a big man?
edit: Oh yeah, and I read The Miracle of Castel di Sangro. It was good, but I found myself cringing at some of McGinniss's doofusness.
Ah found some details:
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy put a five million pounds release clause in Redknapp’s contract when he was appointed, and FA would also have to pay the remaining 15 months of a deal worth a basic 3.1 million pounds a year, should they want him as manager for the England squad.
That was modest considering that Spurs paid Portsmouth five million for Redknapp.
Yeah, but if they pay him to his Monaco account, they can cut the income tax right out of it!
The real question will be whether he'll take his chances with the aging players, who don't really listen to anyone and who aren't likely to listen to Roy any more than the Liverpool team did, or will he go with younger players who might follow his system.
Assuming the FA wasn't going to punt the tournament and build for the future, appointing Hogdson instead of Redknapp makes sense. But, 4 years?
Good times, good times.
I believe they would then have to officially appoint his dead dog England manager.
It probably wouldn't make a difference. They could probably put me in charge of the team and they'd still get out of the group and then flame out in the quarters. It's their destiny. England is the red-shirted ensign on Star Trek--just handsome enough so you care a little, very dull so you don't care too much, and very, very doomed.
They will lose Jan Vertonghen, but the rest of the team will stick around. They're my dark horse pick for next year's Champions League - not that a team will come from outside the big 4 and win, but that they are the likeliest team from outside the big 4 to lift Big Ears.
And they're playing beautiful ball doing it too. De Boer is nominally a Cruijff guy, but he played under Van Gaal and melds Van Gaal's more direct 4-3-3 with Cruijff's possession based game. It works very, very well.
Don't get me wrong, I think England are a solid team, but they really don't have much quality up top and the midfield lacks creativity. What are their options at striker to play off Rooney (who is missing the first 2 games anyway)? Welbeck? Bent? Sturridge? France, just as an example, blows England away when it comes to options at striker. Crazy things can happen--hell, if Greece or Denmark can win, England can--but they sure seem like a long shot to me. Aside from England, I'm really disappointed Belgium didn't qualify. It would have been interesting to see if all that talent they have can come together at some point.
That could just be me perceiving something that isn't true, the top teams in those countries consolidating talent more or maybe an effort to keep "groups" together to build familiarity.
That's the key, though, right? Is Hodgson the guy to come up with a tactical plan the players will actually carry out? I'm neutral about England but it seems, when watching them, that they don't really have a defined style of play like the Italians do or the German do or the Spanish. If Hodgson can find 11 players to buy into his system then, yeah, England can do some damage. First up, though, is the John Terry/Rio Ferdinand problem. Good luck with that one, Roy. I'm sure the FA will have your back! Talent-wise, Terry seems clearly the better player at this point, but if you take Terry instead of Ferdinand it looks bad. If you take both, you risk creating factions on the squad. It should be a fun soap opera.
I think it's sort of true of Spain and Germany (because Bayern dominates the Bundesliga financially as Barca/Real do in Spain) but Holland's players are spread all over Europe and they do fine. I do agree with you that England always seem more of an "all-star" team than a coherent squad.
This makes sense, actually. Have you not started drinking yet?
