Arsenal-Brom just got interesting.

Aarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh. At least Stoke has decided to appear, keeping AV at 31 pts., for now.

That's a huge win for Arsenal. They needed a bit of luck to hold on but they showed some real strength, too.
   105. Shooty Is Disappointed With His Midstream Urine Posted: April 06, 2013 at 11:54 AM (#4406109)
Well, hell. If Wigan and Sunderland manage to win, Stoke could be in real trouble.

Bleh. West Brom should have gotten at least a point out of that.

Stoke could be in real trouble.

Of course, how did they think they could discard Rory Delap and survive? Sure, all he brought was gimmick throw ins, but that's one more offensive weapon than Stoke has now.
   108. Crispix reaches boiling point with lackluster play Posted: April 06, 2013 at 12:39 PM (#4406135)
If they want gimmick throw-ins, they could always bring in a third MLS star, Phila.Union legend Sheanon Williams.

My purchase of a 50% off Chris Eagles Internazionale Boltono shirt this year is proof of how crucial it is for teams in the Championship to cultivate American support.

Freiburg have hit the woodwork twice already.

Yes...I think I just saw Mirko Vucinic avoid a yellow card by taking his shorts off. That's a new one for me. Never seen that, as I recall.

Edit: It didn't work, he still got a yellow.
   111. Shooty Is Disappointed With His Midstream Urine Posted: April 06, 2013 at 02:22 PM (#4406170)
More like Humblerg. Or, I guess it's Freiburglar now since they went to Hamburg and stole all 3 points. You know, I feel like I should be doing better with these -urg puns but, whatever, Freiburg win! Europa hopes: still alive. Champions League hopes: flickering!
   112. frannyzoo Posted: April 06, 2013 at 02:43 PM (#4406176)
Anyone liking high-scoring football (and/or relegation battles) should check out Depo/Zaragoza right now. Plenty of chances and all to play for, as they say. Good, good stuff.
   113. Shooty Is Disappointed With His Midstream Urine Posted: April 06, 2013 at 03:05 PM (#4406187)
Looking over the final games for Freiburg, Schalke and Eintracht Frankfurt I'd say Frankfurt has the easiest run in, but only slightly. Interestingly enough, Freiburg's last game is home to Schalke. It would be a lot of fun if that game was for a CL spot, but I'd say the odds of that are around 1 in 5. If I was a betting man I'd say Schalke end up with the last CL spot. Maybe Bayern will roll over for Freiburg in a couple of weeks now that they've won the title.
   114. frannyzoo Posted: April 06, 2013 at 05:02 PM (#4406266)
Obviously, based on the first half of Barca/Mallorca, Leo should be sold LA Kings-style to PSG or Anzhi Whateverthehell for one billion Euros right this second. At least one-billion. Seriously, Cesc seems to like the more forward role. Obviously.
   115. Shooty Is Disappointed With His Midstream Urine Posted: April 07, 2013 at 08:45 AM (#4406545)
Tottenham: Lloris, Walker, Caulker, Dawson, Vertonghen, Parker, Dembele, Sigurdsson, Holtby, Dempsey, Adebayor

Subs: Friedel, Naughton, Assou-Ekotto, Livermore, Huddlestone, Carroll, Ceballos

Everton: Howard, Coleman, Baines, Heitinga, Distin, Jagielka, Gibson, Mirallas, Osman, Barkley, Anichebe

All the injuries are obviously not good, but these are the kind of games you need to win in a long season. Fingers locked in crossed position.

These yellows for 'simulation' are getting ridiculous. Dempsey loses his balance, doesn't even appeal for a foul, and gets a yellow for his troubles.

They HAVE to start doing post match reviews and levying serious fines and/or suspensions regardless of the referees call.

Huge save by Lloris.

SPURS THINK FACTORY

This is what you get when you have to count on Sunderland to help you.
   128. I am going to be Frank Posted: April 07, 2013 at 11:30 AM (#4406623)
If I'm reading the table right - if Sunderland scores again (unlikely) and the game ends 2-2, Arsenal and Chelsea would be tied with the same amount of points, goal difference and goals.

Edit: Zamora gets sent off - rightly so.

I'm coming up blank for inoffensive jokes involving di Canio, so I think I'll go for faux outrage instead:

WHY DO YOU WANT HELP FROM A FASCIST!!!????
   130. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: April 07, 2013 at 11:35 AM (#4406627)
That was about as easy a red card decision as you are going to get. Zamora was looking at Gomez the whole way, blatant disregard for the players safety.
   131. Swedish Chef Posted: April 07, 2013 at 12:08 PM (#4406644)
It would have been fun if Newcastle had hung around the relegation battle a bit longer.

Chelsea should be ashamed.

It was ugly, but I blame Rafa's really bad rotation at the moment. He played a complete "B" team vs the very in-form Saints last week, which coming of Thursday's Europa League game with most of his "A" squad meant that he was going to have to play all of them again today because of the must win nature. The squad you saw was completely gassed and probably would have been better off with some rotation. We may hold on to 3rd/4th, but this upcoming schedule is just going to be brutal. At least fascism didn't win today.
   133. frannyzoo Posted: April 07, 2013 at 01:00 PM (#4406677)
Wigan deserve every bit of their zero points today. Maybe the worst performance I've ever seen 11 against 10, not to mention that the 10 is QPR. Wigan deserves to be relegated for this one.

Edit: Man...this slamming teams is working like magic. First Norwich and now Wigan. They still stunk up the joint today, however.
   134. Shooty Is Disappointed With His Midstream Urine Posted: April 07, 2013 at 01:34 PM (#4406706)
Spurs-Everton is kind of a result that helps neither club. From Spurs POV, I feel like it's slipping away but I was really happy with Adebayor today. I've been waiting for that kind of performance from him all season.
   135. jmurph Posted: April 07, 2013 at 02:11 PM (#4406747)
Spurs really benefited from the fact that Everton don't employ any Premier League caliber strikers. How many 2 on 1s and 3 on 2s did they waste without even getting a shot off? Lots of just booting away the advantage with terrible passes around midfield.
   136. Swedish Chef Posted: April 07, 2013 at 02:19 PM (#4406756)
Arsenal must be big favorites for third now. They have one tough game left, against United, and even that is at home against a team that have secured the title already.

Holy crap, I think you're right. That's kind of sad. I think they go to that qualifying round that Liverpool started in this season in early August.

If they win the FA cup, they get the best EL place and go directly to the group stage, otherwise that place goes to the fifth team in the PL and they get the second best place and go to the playoff round. Liverpool got the League Cup place (which doesn't go to the runner-up in case the winner doesn't need it) which enters in the last qualifying round.
   146. Crispix reaches boiling point with lackluster play Posted: April 09, 2013 at 02:24 AM (#4408177)
Swansea are going to the third qualifying round that is traditionally against a second-place team from somewhere in the former Soviet bloc. The Premier League fifth-place team go to the round after that, which could be called the fourth qualifying round but is called the "playoff round". The FA Cup winners qualify automatically at the group stage, along with the equivalent cup winners from Spain, Germany, France, Italy and Portugal.

It's all here for your ready reference. It looks like England and France are the only leagues that HAVE a League Cup, or have one that qualifies the winner for Europe anyway.

beautiful one-touch passing by Dortmund produced the equalizer. Reus supplied the critical sublime touch for the assist, but the whole move in the attacking half was really sweet.

Swindon Spurs are nil-nil at the half. The first 11 features 3 Spurs on loan but there bench is better--two Rooneys and an Alex Ferguson.

Who decides which teams make it to the European competitions? I know that UEFA determines how many teams from each nation go but do the individual FAs have the right to determine the criteria? For example, could the English FA determine that their 4 Champions League slots would go not to the top 4 teams in the EPL but to the winners of the EPL, Championship, League One and League Two?
   159. Swedish Chef Posted: April 09, 2013 at 03:52 PM (#4408678)

No, it's spelled out in the CL regulations that it is the top finishers in the top league that is qualified.

1.02 UEFA member associations are represented on the following basis:
a) One representative: winner of the top domestic league championship.
b) Two representatives: winner and runner-up of the top domestic league championship.
c) Three representatives: winner, runner-up and third-placed club in the top domestic league championship.
d) Four representatives: winner, runner-up, third- and fourth-placed clubs in the top domestic league championship

Dortmund totally blowing it. They gave up a lot of chances this half. Missed two excellent ones of their own, and now need 2 more. Sad. But, actually I predicted that Dortmund would have a very hard time with this tie and too many were assuming they would breeze through it. Of course I thought they would prevail but it seems most were acting like it was a foregone conclusion.

I kind of have two minds about it--I find Thatcher kind of odious and, especially with the facts about Hillsborough coming out, I can see why football fans want nothing to do with her. On the other hand, she broke through a lot of barriers for women which makes her an important historical figure. Glad it's not my country so I don't have to think too much about these things!

Speaking of another place they are, um, unlikely to have a moment of silence for Thatcher, Partick Thistle are hosting Greenock Morton in the game of the year in the Scottish First Division. If Partick win, they are almost certain to get promoted to the SPL. Which means...I'll finally be able to get a stream of a Partick game! Celtic will have a derby again!

Spurs fans, Swiss Ramble is, well, rambling on Twitter details of their finances. In short, this.

Not unexpected without the CL money. I don't see anything too worrying there but I think their turnover will stagnate until the new stadium is built (not counting the big increase in tv money that's on the way, but all the clubs are getting that so they'll just be running in place, relative to the competition, though it will probably help them snatch talent from the continent).

edit: Also, the debt on the stadium is building up. Hopefully a naming rights deal and rent from the supermarket will alleviate some of that. Bale needs his money, after all.

And Ancelotti is a fascinating coach who doesn't seem to get the credit he deserves. It looks like they're running a 4-4-2 with a midfield diamond, but it's very flexible.

And when Fabregas gave up a shot on goal in the seventh minute or so, in order to kick the ground and take a swan dive, spinning in the air and demanding a penalty before he'd even hit the ground, my choice for the game was pretty well sealed.

Malaga's owner is also tweeting stuff in Arabic, which is apparently poetry by Saddam Hussien. Bizarre doesn't begin to describe it.

When you've got that much money, you can troll any way you want to. If he wanted to win the CL so badly, maybe he shouldn't have sold off Monreal and Cazorla.

Barca was incredibly obnoxious last night with their diving & rolling on the ground in agony. I feel bad for Messi, having to play with that bunch of doofs.

Solution: Buy Everton F.C.

Really, this isn't tough.

Funny. Count me as one that roots against Barca because I find those antics super silly since they are a team that doesn't need it.

But I didn't find Barca all that obnoxious. Thinking about it, there was a lot of rolling around on the ground. But there wasn't any antics that delay the game for 90 seconds while 7 or 8 players all surround the referee demanding that a player from the opposition be given a red. It's the latter that I find extremely distasteful.
