Sounders scorefest on Saturday night - some really nifty finishing at 1:06, 2:55, 4:25, and 6:47. There's also one of those moments where you know there's about to be a goal, at 8:55. Finally, if you're wondering, the goal at 8:00 was disallowed correctly because as the Chivas player fell over the GK, his hand landed directly on the ball, which made it squirt loose.

Never mind the clownshoes defending, just appreciate the passing :)

-- Like Mattbert says I'm not really sold on the Lloris signing. The only thing I know about goalkeeping is that I couldn't do it (as the emergency keeper it would have had to be quite an emergency for me to play) but in the dozen or two times I've seen him play I haven't thought he was all that great. He's good, but I think Brad is ok in the near term and they have pressing needs elsewhere. Willian and Dembele would be good, but they still need at least one striker. I would have thought GK would be pretty far down the list. Spurs are well run though, maybe they just saw an opportunity with Lloris.

-- I gave up on trying to figure out transfer sagas awhile ago, but the Dempsey\Sunderland thing reeks of a Fulham misinformation campaign to drum up the price on Dempsey. Maybe I'd dead wrong and Clint will be shipping up to the Stadium of Light post haste, but if it has truly come to that I think I'd swallow my pride and go groveling to Fulham if I were Deuce. Fulham are a good club that played in a European final not too long ago. There are worse fates in life for a footballer.*

-- Lucas might be hurt pretty badly. It makes me angry. What kind of dopes do they get to run medical staffs? At this point in sports I get sick to my stomach every time some random player in some random sport "comes back ahead of schedule". The man was coming off a major knee injury and felt a twinge in warm ups. What kind of decision making process led to him blowing out a thigh muscle on the pitch after trying to give it a go? It really irritates me especially after there were suggestions he was run into the ground last year which contributed to the knee injury in the first place. Lucas is one my favorite players, so that's just the cherry on top of the crap sundae. Maybe the Guardian has it wrong, I hope so.

*Nothing against Sunderland. But they ain't Fulham.

That's what happens when FSG buys the team.

Speaking of which, I'm reading An Epic Swindle, about the Hicks/Gillett tenure at Liverpool. Good so far, though not sure how much to trust the sourcing.

That's funny RB. I had the exact same thought. Maybe they pinched pennies and used the Red Sox's medical people.

As for the book I bet its a fun read but some of the people pimping it make me a little leery. I guess Americans are pretty jaded when it comes to skeevy owners. Modell, Irsay, Loria, Wirtz, Sterling the list goes on and on. I never fail to get a kick out of the universal hatred of MK Dons. Hicks and Gillett were stooges to be sure, but the way LFC supporters go on you'd think they were the bastard step children of Hitler and Pol Pot.

I think this is probably it. Lyon want to balance their books after missing out on the CL and no giant clubs are in for him. I like Lloris--he's incredibly athletic and commanding but I do worry about his size. He's relatively slight so teams are going to try to bully him, but if he can adjust to that I think he'll be fine. I won't really believe this transfer until it's finished. I also think Spurs are being foolish letting so much business wait until the last days of the window.

Players still with their clubs:

Joey Barton
David Bentley
Gio Dos Santos
Marouane Chamakh
Nicklas Bendtner
Dimitar Berbatov
Andrei Arshavin

Hicks and Gillett were stooges to be sure, but the way LFC supporters go on you'd think they were the bastard step children of Hitler and Pol Pot.

Are you accusing LFC fans over being overly dramatic? How dare you, sir!

A question about salaries- can i just multiply the $/wk number by 52 to get their annual pay or do i need to account for things like unpaid vacation? I've always thought it was just x52, but I want to check.
1408. Shooty is in the Trust Tree Posted: August 28, 2012 at 10:05 AM (#4219963)
Bojan Krkic is heading to Milan. Lloris is having his medical tomorrow with Spurs so I'd expect that deal to be announced sometime tomorrow.
   1409. ursus arctos Posted: August 28, 2012 at 10:27 AM (#4219981)
1407, for at least the top four divisions in England, you can take the weekly salary and multiply it by 52. Things become a bit murkier the further down the pyramid you go. That said, the problem with all such figures is that they exclude appearance and win bonuses, which can comprise a significant portion of a player's actual take home salary.

Lloris is 25 years old, highly talented and (to my mind) a definite upgrade over a Friedel in decline. A solid keeper can improve the performance of the entire defense, so to me this is a no-brainer for Tottenham.

There are a very significant number of teams looking for strikers at the moment (Fiorentina and Juve, just to mention two), and very few quality players on the market on acceptable terms.

I agree with this, even though I've previously sounded a little down on the prospect of signing Lloris. Friedel is every bit the liability that Gomes was at his worst, it's just that Brad coughs up goals in subtle, boring ways as opposed to Gomes' spectacular howlers. My pessimism isn't related to Lloris' ability, but rather his price and the lingering irritation that Spurs didn't get in on Stek when they had the chance.

I've been glad to read the rumors of Tottenham's potentially reignited interest in Loic Remy. I think he's a better fit for the team than Damiao now that Spurs have Adebayor back, and he'll be less expensive, surely.

Honestly, I have no idea what Spurs will do here. I think I'd take Bendtner now just to have some depth.

Some Russian sports journalist has announced Spurs have signed Willian. I will wait for a better source before wondering what this means. I think it could mean VDV really will be off to Hamburg. No Luka, Ledley or Rafa will make me a sad, sad man.

Spurs are getting Lloris for 13 million Euros + 2 million in potential add ons. That seems a fair deal, all around.

It just seems like a club that will sign Robert Green and then immediately sign Julio Cesar because Green has a bad game is the exact kind of club that will fall under the spell of 'Arry. I expect Crouch and Defoe to be Rangers in the January window.

I hate transfer season.

The Brazilian forward himself is understood to be more interested in a move to the Premier League and, specifically, Tottenham to link up with his old boss at Porto, Andre Villas-Boas.

They build me up just to tear me down.

Especially since they've acquired 3 strikers--Pazzini, Krkic and Niang--in the last week and a half. Andy Carroll at Milan would be fantastic entertainment, though. Maybe they could get Kevin Nolan, too.

Dialing the thread - do we still say that?

I missed the discussion in the 900s on trying to explain Blackpool. My girlfriend and I have become big fans of the team and have been over there a couple of times in the past few years. If Atlantic City is like a shitty Vegas, Blackpool is like a really shitty Atlantic City. Key memories:

1) The drunk 250 pound guy in a woman's bathing suit in a stag that was torn open by his friends shouting "Ow'm I gonna get into the bars now lads? Ow'm I gonna get in now?"

2) The guy with phone pole sized arms who kindly gave us his seats on the train absolutely destroying a machine that measures how hard you punch;

3) Being in a bar with about 100 people, 97 of whom were men, most of whom were dancing with each other while the DJ insulted their home towns. Men dance with each other much more readily in England. I went to take a piss while my girlfriend got a drink and three guys tried to pick her up in like four minutes.

4) Watching a 250 pound girl climb on stage at a mentalist/hypnotist show. She was a fishmonger. She was also not wearing underwear.

That being said, I find the people in England outside of London to be friendly as hell. It's a rough around the edges town but the people are wonderful. A family we met insists we stay with them when we come back now. We've talked to dozens of Pool fans on our trips - all wonderful people. May have mentioned this before, but we met the club owner in a bar the first time we were there and he hooked us up with otherwise impossible to get tix for Manchester United-Blackpool. Hopefully the oil boom happens off the coast and pours some money into town to kind of turn it around.

It's too bad that John Henry wasn't able to pry Billy Beane away from the A's. I assume Henry would have him do some consultancy work for Liverpool. Right about now we need Beane to come up with one of his patented 4 or 5 team mega trades that would sort out this nonsense.

Something like:

Newcastle gets Carrol
Spurs get Cabaye + Berbatov
Liverpool gets Dempsey
ManU gets Dembele
Fulham gets Bendtner + Kolo Toure + Jordan Henderson
City gets some U-19 prospect
Arsenal gets some French U-19 prospect
Blackpool gets Charlie Adam
Spurs & United cash is used to even things out

Doesn't exactly work ... which is why we need Billy Beane.

That's awesome stuff Hinske. If they do strike it oil rich, hopefully it doesn't ruin what you like about the town.

Moussa Dembele NOT in the 18 today for Fulham despite their playing mostly a first team squad. (No Dempsey, either, of course.)

I have to think if it's between Man U and Spurs, Man U will come away with Dembele. What seems almost certain is that he's leaving Fulham, which is regrettable, really. Fulham had put together a really good squad. I mean, it's still good, but if they'd been able to hold onto Dempsey and Dembele I think they could have made a run at a European place. Maybe Jol can still pull off a magic trick with the cash he'll have to spend now.

I think they had a very serious chance to be this year's Newcastle. The trouble with waiting really long to sell players is that then you can't spend the money that transfer window (or at least, not efficiently). It's a shame because Dembele and Dempsey are pretty much the guys that create the chances.

Hopefully they have a plan in place, Spivey, as losing Dembele has been a real possibility for a while. I still don't know if he's going to Spurs or Man U. Roger Morgan is reporting he's having a medical now for Spurs and Fulham are going to make an official announcement about Dembele soon. I won't believe he's not going to United until he's holding up the Spurs shirt. The Man U blogs are freaking out about this. Honestly, I feel elated Spurs might get a player I've rated for a while now but I do feel genuinely bad Fulham aren't going to get to make a run with a very good team they had put together. Heading out for a run but hopefully when I get back, he's still with either FFC or with THFC.

It's a shame that they couldn't sell Dembele to Man U or Real or someone. Yeah, Tottenham is less annoying, but those other teams would give back a player that was good along with an sack of money.

I have to assume that Dembele quietly tried to force this (which I don't blame him for, this is just an annoying aspect of soccer). But I can't believe Fulham's middle eastern sugar daddy would just sell Dembele for any price under 20mil.

Ah, yes, my home town. It's very easy to be cynical about Blackpool, but I think there's something to be said for the atmosphere in a town that exists mainly to provide fun. It's a working man's holiday town, so, yes, some may find it grim, but if you're from there, it's really not (and no, I haven't lived there for many years, but my family is still there, and I have visited). My Dad grew up there, and he remembers that because of all the theatres there, Blackpool was able to attract all of the top American musical talent in the post-war years - Sinatra, Ella, etc. And he saw what I think was Glenn Miller's last public show, at the Tower Ballroom, back in 1944. Blackpool is also the mecca of ballroom dancing - If you remember the Japanese film "Shall We Dance", the pivotal moment of the main female character's life happned in the ballroom dancing competition at Blackpool. I'd also mention that my (female) cousin's favorite place to go for a night out in Blackpool is to a drag show, of which there are many...

The closest thing I can think of is Niagara Falls, although Blackpool obviously lacks any natural (or man made) feature that compares to the falls.

Um, Blackpool Tower is pretty darn impressive.

And as for the football team, how many teams have a player such as Stanley Matthews in their past?

It's perfectly nice--I'm a big fan of tall things one can go on to the top of--but come on, we're talking about Niagara Falls here. There's no knock on Blackpool Tower to say it doesn't compare to the falls. And if--like me--tall things once can go to the top of are your thing, Niagara Falls has that too!

I guess under the circumstances signing Kieran Richardson qualifies as good news. It could have been Stuart Downing.

If LFC really intend to convert Downing to left back, that seems like the best way to get some value from him. I don't know if he can play the position, but he can't play any other.

Rumor has it that Man City want Theo.

William Regal is billed as being from Blackpool, England.

Actually, Blackpool sounds like a really cool place for a pro wrestler to call his hometown. Kinda like Truth or Consequences, New Mexico.

I don't know that we really have such things as "working man's holiday towns" in North America. Maybe it's something to do with our lack of population density. Anyway, it was quite novel to me and I'm from a pretty working man's town, although not a working class family. Of course, I find pretty much all of England outside of London is pretty working class - the class structure there really sticks out to me. Outside of London, it's like there is no professional class, which is bizarre by NA standards.

Worst Panenka of all time costs Udinese millions as they miss out on Champions League group stages.

I get the sense his teammates were pretty pissed off with him. The look on the face of the next guy after he scored was not one of happiness. What a disaster for Udinese. I'm happy we'll see more games from Braga's stadium though, which looks awfully cool.

Theo Walcott turned down Arsenal? Damn, something is seriously wrong at that club when a mediocrity like Theo Walcott thinks he can push them around like that. He should be grateful that he isn't plying his trade at Sunderland.
   1470. ursus arctos Posted: August 29, 2012 at 07:07 AM (#4220901)
That was only Maicosuel's second match for Udinese (and in Europe), so I doubt if the keeper had a "book" on him.

His colleagues certainly were pissed off, and Guidolin is so upset that he's not shown up to training today and is rumoured to be thinking of resigning.

Hinske, you should have gone to a rugby or cricket match if you wanted to see the provincial professional class. They do exist, though it is of course fair to note that the UK is much more centralized in all respects than either the US or Canada.

I blame Udinese's loss on Andrea Pirlo. Way to #### up the coefficient, Pirlo.

Berbatov is going to Fiorentino. Sorry ursus.
Milan, inexplicably, are in for Bendtner.
Liverpool are after Theo Walcott.
Fulham want Mark Davies, making me feel even more guilty about the Dembele swoop. Sorry guys. (evidently Dembele chose Spurs over Man U and ANZHI! because he wanted to stay in London. Whew! I mean, it's Norf London, but thank god it still counts.)
I don't think there are enough hours left in the window for Spurs to make all the deals they are rumored to make. I am in the denial stage still over Van der Vaart leaving. That one is going to hurt if it happens.

This doesn't make any sense to me and I hope the Guardian is wrong. It seems to me he's at his best sprinting on the wing, but he's not good with the ball and doesn't seem to be a great finisher. I picture lots of cheeky backheels from Silva and Nasri to spring him in the box, only for Theo to dribble it out of bounds across the goal line and then flash a thumbs up. No thanks.

A partnership between Berba and Jovetic could be something to behold if they're in tune with each other. I have a feeling Fiorentina will either be a delight to watch this season or a total shitshow. Here's hoping they can get all these new signings in sync and entertain.

Maybe they just want to put pressure on Swansea to sell Sinclair? I can see Walcott at Liverpool--Walcott could be a rich man's version of a poor man's Nathan Dyer who was an important player for Rodgers at Swansea.

I hope so. Adam Johnson is better than Walcott at everything related to being good at their chosen sport, and Mancini had no use for him.

Theo Walcott is a full England international, good sir!

edit: I think I rate Walcott better than anyone else in this thread, despite my jokes about him. Still, I think he's a better fit for Liverpool than City. Liverpool could really use the space he can create.

I actually think Theo has his uses- I mostly mean to criticize City/Mancini for making weird moves this summer (granted this is still just a rumor). But I think he would maybe do best on a long ball team, because the man can go get it. I'm not sure about Liverpool. Can you imagine Walcott attempting crosses to England's Andy Carroll? High comedy. Though I guess they're still looking to move Carroll.

re: 1479

I think I've posted before that I don't understand all the stick Walcott gets. He has his limitations but he's very useful. I don't think he's going to LFC, but if he did I'd be happy to have him. He and Sterling would be a nice tag team for BR's system.

Are Spurs really going to get Dzagoev (sp) in addition to Dembele? I really rate Dzagoev. That would be a sweet set of midfielders to go with Gylfi if true.

I don't think so. I think the interest is genuine but the price is just too high. Besides Lloris and Dembele, I really have no idea who else is coming in. Levy is physically in the Ukraine working on one or more of Willian, Costa or Fernandinho. Maybe one of those guys. If Dawson leaves I think Carvahlo comes in. Maybe Isco, though Malaga don't seem to be in position to sell him. I can see a cash + Dos Santos deal there because they really need bodies. Ibrahim Affelay is a real possibility though Schalke are in for him, too, and they have CL to offer. Then there are the pie in the sky dreams of a Llorente or Falcao or Damiao or Lewandoski or Dzagoev. Only the most deluded Spurs fans think any of those is realistic. AVB is really high on Nathan Redmond at Brum, too.

edit: BTW, Spurs fans, Ipswich fans have started calling Massimo Luongo "Our Xavi". He seems to be doing well, there. FYI, he's eligible to play for Australia, Italy or INDONESIA internationally, though he's 100% likely to play for the Aussies despite the fact he could be the Indonesian Messi.

Yeah, I mean, I love me some Hulk, but I can't see Porto turning down that kind of scratch. Assuming it's not entirely made up, I would bet one of two things.

A: The 50m contained generous amounts of deferred money, based on performance clauses, a percentage of potential future sale, and other fun contract shenanigans.

B: Porto had a chat with Hulk, who told them some version of "for no money in the world". Porto then turns down the offer, and gets to play a little hard to get with other suitors.

I think a lot of it stems from expectations. He was supposed to become this real star and while he's certainly "useful" he's not a guy you would build anything around. He's not a finisher and he doesn't seem a particularly good crosser either. What he can do well is create space and put pressure on defenses so you need a garbageman who can come in after he's broken things down and make that final pass or shot that finishes the job.

It's a different sport but he reminds me of a guy the Bruins (NHL) used to have by the name of Dmitri Kvartalnov. He was a fast skater and had some mesmerizing moves. He could pick up the puck at center ice and weave through defensemen and get in on goal like no one's business. Unfortunately, when the goal loomed he would fire the puck either 3 feet wide or straight into the logo on the goalies chest. Put another way, we always hear about players being let down by their first touch, I think Walcott is often undone by his last touch.

EDIT: To finish the point, that's still a very good player, better than most. But for a guy who was on a World Cup squad as a 17 year old, it's a bit disappointing.

I'm not a big Theo fan, but what he does best is make it difficult for the defense to play a high line. That's a popular tactic these days, and he's a very useful counter.

Mark Davies? Again, could be worse.
