Have you ever heard the himno nacional?
"War, war without quarter to any who dare to tarnish the coats of arms of the country!
War, war! Let the national banners be soaked in waves of blood."
Jaunty.
Cameron looks every bit the Stoke player he is about to be. He's going to get tested tonight based on the first ten minutes.
Interesting that, according to Twellman, he's going to play holding mid for Stoke. He's played all over the place for Houston, so it's probably not an issue. Hope he's prepared for lots of headed clearances, hoofs and Rory Delap throw-in headers.
The back 4 have been impressive but each midfielder has done nothing but give passes away.
Impressed by the defense though.
Ochoa had the easiest half of his life.
"Remember when Bob Bradley used 2 get hammered for playing 2 D-mids? Klinsmann has found a way 2 get FIVE on the field together."
What do you think about Ives' tweet? Do you thnk he'll have more? Share your thoughts below.
One or two, but they were brief. Torres is a good player at the club level but he has done absolutley nothing for the national team. And I say that as a Torres fan.
In fairness the wings were a defensive midfielder and a center attacking midfielder, because Klinsmann seems to have a requirement to have at least four players out of position.
Well, yes. I wouldn't mind seeing Fabian Johnson given a shot at the left wing. Drop Williams back to right back and make Beasley the right winger.
This would be a total waste. Johnson is a fullback, a good one, and the US doesn't have none to play there if you move him up. No reason to play him anywhere else.
He tried his best to shank it, but it's hard from two feet.
So, pretty much like Houston the last couple years?
That was a helluva freak win.
Also saw the first rumors hit today about Berbatov or Chicharito to Spurs. Ah, to be a rumor mongerer...I think it would be hilarious if Spurs signed Chicharito and then buried him for 4 years, though I guess if he stays at Man U the result could be the same.
I thought he was very hit-or-miss, with about 75% of his appearances being misses. I'm sure he'll put a few away for Sunderland; decent move for them.
That's another really, really good pickup for the Toon. Where did this recent blast of competence come from? It's disorienting.
(I have submitted this article to the main site because Bill James' name shows up about a dozen times.)
I'm not sure I'm going to be able to be an actual Man City fan - the thought is still a bit nauseating - but the idea of cheering for a club that's actively working to advance knowledge of the game really appeals to me.
EDIT: Though I see SAF is talking about a partnership between Rooney and van Persie. Two awfully good players rate to get very little playing time in big games -- though I suppose they can spell the big two often and hope to keep them fresh.
I'm still surprised that the big money move is for a striker -- by far the position with the best options already.
DO IT! We need more here. I think there's at least one other one who posts, and he's a long-serving fan (my fandom only goes back to the end of the Sven-era). Had I not started supporting them prior to the richie rich era, I would also find them nauseating (and frankly occasionally do anyway, like when they overspend for the Jack Rodwells of the world).
That was my take too. A lifelong ManU fan in my office (he's from Manchester) said he was much more optimistic about the season than he had been a couple days ago...I don't see it. Obviously RVP is an upgrade over Chicharito/Welbeck/Berbatov but it feels like an upgrade not at all consistent with the cost. The midfield is still pretty uninspiring and even if they play some kind of 4-3-1-2 with Rooney dropping back a bit it still leaves about 75 years of Scholes and Giggs running around an awful lot.
Liverpool signed Oussama Assaidi from Heerenveen. Don't know much about him except he's a winger which seemed to be an area of need for them.
To be fair, when I was there in 2009, they also threw stuff at us when they scored.
After the game we got escorted out of the stadium by riot police in full getup, and people were screaming and throwing things. Then, somewhere out in the parking lot the riot police decided their job was done and left. After that, almost all of the Mexican fans were really friendly. Something about riot police makes people want to riot.
Tied for worst with the dozens (possibly hundreds) of groups of fans who do the same thing in situations that don't involve the United States.
I don't think it's much of an excuse for them that Serbian ultras are ####### dopes, too.
I'd be a little surprised about moving Chicharito. It seemed like he was part of the long-term plan. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see SAF try to sell high on Rooney in a year or so.
I would be a little surprised if they sold Chicharito, but if they get a large enough offer, it's probably the right move. He is very good and pretty young, but certainly not irreplaceable. With RVP added to their other options, they have a couple years before they would absolutely need to find a replacement.
[671] I don't see what getting RVP and possibly selling Chicharito has to do with Kagawa at all.
What could possibly go wrong?
Ah, the land of Camus, baguettes and The Day of The Jackal. Joey will love it!
Where are you guys seeing this Chicharito to Juve stuff? I think Hernandez is overrated so I can see why Ferguson has checked out on him.
A year in the Championship can act as a nice little reality check. At 6-7m it's a very nice signing, and goes to show what I mentioned earlier. There are still bargains to be had, as long as your letterhead doesn't contain words like 'Manchester'.
Although I am not 100% sure how this works out from a playing time perspective. The most obvious role for him seems to already be filled by Tiote rather competently. CB or FB seemed like the obvious places to address, and would have had a larger impact imo. They have 4.5 PL quality defenders on the roster (with Steven Taylor coming off a torn ACL), that doesn't leave much room for injury or rotation. I am strongly leaning towards 3-5-2 for my FM13 Newcastle team, I can tell you that much...
Meh. Ronaldo would eat both of them for breakfast. Literally these days.
EDIT: Coke to Fancy Pants.
That is certainly an interesting choice.
Not a fan of the 4-3-1-2, Frank?
SAF will stick him in a CM role regardless. He has never shied away from having 1 of the 2 CM's play a mostly attacking position.
Anyone know if ESPN 3 will still have Serie A? There was a ton of overlap last year between ESPN 3 and Fox Soccer Channel (or FSC+, or .tv), and I haven't heard if ESPN also lost its share like Fox.
Sven-Goran Eriksson!
Unless you guys are seeing different information than me, I don't think the Dempsey deal is done. I'm guessing the news outlets are going off of Jol's presser this morning, where he called out Liverpool for showing interest but not actually making an offer. There's quite obviously interest from Liverpool's end, but they likely don't want to pay all that much for a somewhat older player who's in the last year of his deal.
You don't have Dish or DirecTV, do you? Looks like Bein Sports 1 is carried there, and supposedly it launched.
BTW: is the video quality on satellite better than cable? And is it noticeable to average person? (Sort of like the question about HD-DVD/Bluray, or 1080p vs 720p back before tv's had gone over 50".) One hears that a lot (that satellite quality is supposed to be better). How often does the signal go out in bad weather?
I have Dish. I've seen my friend's cable picture quality from Time Warner (I think it is). I prefer Dish's. It just seems.. purer. Some of that I think are the cable boxes. It may not be noticeable, and I may be biased.
The signal only goes out for me in the most extreme storms, and if so, no more than 5-10 minutes. Or if snow accumulates in front of the dish, but that's relatively easy to deal as long as the dish is reachable.
Let me one again thank Al Jazeera for ####### up my ability to watch Torino this season. Thanks guys! I hope you lose a gazillion dollars on this deal.
Sounds like Serie A and La Liga already regret taking the short money.
Now that the European seasons are starting, at least some clubs are worried their leagues made a mistake by taking dollars over distribution. Complicating the matter, a dispute broke out in Spain, with some clubs saying their television rights were sold by a company that doesn't own them.
"I know Madrid and Barcelona are already concerned by what has happened domestically," AC Milan director Umberto Gandini said in a telephone interview. "We were trying to maximize revenues ahead of visibility. Frankly speaking, we were not aware of such difficulties reaching viewers in the United States and the fact that we are going to be penalized highly by the difference in viewership."
Geniuses. This isn't going to help Italy catch up to the PL anytime soon.
