I love that there is so much focus on Torres tonight. I'm a big fan of his and really want to see him establish himself.

Bit of pop psychology here but with the exception of Donovan and Howard the USA players looked about ready to wet themselves during the anthem.

Have you ever heard the himno nacional?

"War, war without quarter to any who dare to tarnish the coats of arms of the country!
War, war! Let the national banners be soaked in waves of blood."

Jaunty.

Cameron looks every bit the Stoke player he is about to be. He's going to get tested tonight based on the first ten minutes.
   604. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: August 15, 2012 at 08:27 PM (#4209246)
I like that the US isn't getting too defensive yet but they have to figure out a way to get and keep control.

Good to see Edu up and about. That looked nasty.
   606. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: August 15, 2012 at 08:39 PM (#4209261)
US is playing like a hockey team that is gripping the sticks to tight. Seems like they aren't receiving passes well so they can't retain possession for any length if time.

Mexico look incredibly vulnerable to a counter, if the US can string a few passes together. Of course, Mexico might put one or two past Howard in the meantime, but there's definitely space for the US once they get past Mexico's initial frantic press.

Cameron looks every bit the Stoke player he is about to be. He's going to get tested tonight based on the first ten minutes.

Interesting that, according to Twellman, he's going to play holding mid for Stoke. He's played all over the place for Houston, so it's probably not an issue. Hope he's prepared for lots of headed clearances, hoofs and Rory Delap throw-in headers.

I'll take that first half. Not great but survivalist which is about all you can ask for at Azteca.
   609. The Kentucky Gentleman, Mark Edward Posted: August 15, 2012 at 08:57 PM (#4209287)

The back 4 have been impressive but each midfielder has done nothing but give passes away.
   610. Mefisto Posted: August 15, 2012 at 08:59 PM (#4209290)
Danny Williams may be fine defender, but he has no talent whatsoever going forward.
   611. DA Baracus Posted: August 15, 2012 at 09:11 PM (#4209302)
Torres has done nothing.

Impressed by the defense though.

Ochoa had the easiest half of his life.

Haha, funny tweet from Ives:
"Remember when Bob Bradley used 2 get hammered for playing 2 D-mids? Klinsmann has found a way 2 get FIVE on the field together."

Well done Ives, well done.

Did Torres have a touch in the first half?
   615. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: August 15, 2012 at 09:29 PM (#4209317)
Cameron made his bones there. Great effort.
   616. DA Baracus Posted: August 15, 2012 at 09:31 PM (#4209319)
Did Torres have a touch in the first half?

One or two, but they were brief. Torres is a good player at the club level but he has done absolutley nothing for the national team. And I say that as a Torres fan.

The US is getting nothing down either wing.
   618. DA Baracus Posted: August 15, 2012 at 09:37 PM (#4209328)

In fairness the wings were a defensive midfielder and a center attacking midfielder, because Klinsmann seems to have a requirement to have at least four players out of position.

Well, yes. I wouldn't mind seeing Fabian Johnson given a shot at the left wing. Drop Williams back to right back and make Beasley the right winger.

Midfield has been horrific tonight.
   622. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: August 15, 2012 at 09:49 PM (#4209340)
Still a way to go but Cameron is the MOTM for me. Several big plays and just generally very solid. His positioning has been excellent.

This would be a total waste. Johnson is a fullback, a good one, and the US doesn't have none to play there if you move him up. No reason to play him anywhere else.

The Klinsmann sycophants (not here) will never shut up now. But right now, I don't care. Awesome, awesome result. USA! USA!
   645. Mefisto Posted: August 15, 2012 at 10:23 PM (#4209381)
I don't know what Klinsmann says to these guys, but it must be special. A makeshift backline, no midfield possession; and they got the win in the toughest place on earth. Howard or Cameron could be MOTM, and where has this version of Brek Shea been the last year? Can we keep him?
   646. zack Posted: August 15, 2012 at 11:51 PM (#4209409)
Unless Klinsmann slipped a mickey in Chicarito's dinner or made Howard be awesome I'm not sure how much credit he can claim.

Vurnon Anita signs with Newcastle. Despite all the report yesterday, Luka Modric is still with Tottenham but he will soon be a Real player for anywhere from 23 million Euros to 36 million pounds. Plbbbt.

Also saw the first rumors hit today about Berbatov or Chicharito to Spurs. Ah, to be a rumor mongerer...I think it would be hilarious if Spurs signed Chicharito and then buried him for 4 years, though I guess if he stays at Man U the result could be the same.
   650. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: August 16, 2012 at 10:09 AM (#4209538)
Louis Saha to Sunderland. I thought he looked ok for Spurs last year. Not a bad depth signing and continues the Sunderland tradition of signing ex-Man U players.

I thought he was very hit-or-miss, with about 75% of his appearances being misses. I'm sure he'll put a few away for Sunderland; decent move for them.

Seriously. I'm a Wolves fan (sucks for me, I know) and needed some sort of rooting interest in the Premiership.

I'm not sure I'm going to be able to be an actual Man City fan - the thought is still a bit nauseating - but the idea of cheering for a club that's actively working to advance knowledge of the game really appeals to me.
   657. Ron J2 Posted: August 16, 2012 at 12:38 PM (#4209654)
#584 The only way I see this as making sense -- given the Man U squad that is -- is if they really plan on moving Rooney to midfield. Just too much talent in the strikers otherwise.

EDIT: Though I see SAF is talking about a partnership between Rooney and van Persie. Two awfully good players rate to get very little playing time in big games -- though I suppose they can spell the big two often and hope to keep them fresh.

I'm still surprised that the big money move is for a striker -- by far the position with the best options already.

DO IT! We need more here. I think there's at least one other one who posts, and he's a long-serving fan (my fandom only goes back to the end of the Sven-era). Had I not started supporting them prior to the richie rich era, I would also find them nauseating (and frankly occasionally do anyway, like when they overspend for the Jack Rodwells of the world).
   660. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: August 16, 2012 at 02:33 PM (#4209758)
The Market doesn't seem to like the Van Persie signing. MANU US down to $13.56 a share today on heavy volume and that's with the market up nearly a 100 points.

That was my take too. A lifelong ManU fan in my office (he's from Manchester) said he was much more optimistic about the season than he had been a couple days ago...I don't see it. Obviously RVP is an upgrade over Chicharito/Welbeck/Berbatov but it feels like an upgrade not at all consistent with the cost. The midfield is still pretty uninspiring and even if they play some kind of 4-3-1-2 with Rooney dropping back a bit it still leaves about 75 years of Scholes and Giggs running around an awful lot.
   662. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: August 16, 2012 at 03:08 PM (#4209783)
I don't know why Man U want Rooney dropping back anyway as he's a goal scoring machine. It's possible they're not done buying this window.

Liverpool signed Oussama Assaidi from Heerenveen. Don't know much about him except he's a winger which seemed to be an area of need for them.

To be fair, when I was there in 2009, they also threw stuff at us when they scored.

After the game we got escorted out of the stadium by riot police in full getup, and people were screaming and throwing things. Then, somewhere out in the parking lot the riot police decided their job was done and left. After that, almost all of the Mexican fans were really friendly. Something about riot police makes people want to riot.
   664. I am going to be Frank Posted: August 16, 2012 at 03:19 PM (#4209797)
There is only one formation that works with RVP and Rooney and its the 4-4-2. The squad is built around the wings with Valencia, Nani and Young. I think it means Rooney plays behind the top forward more which worked a couple years ago but not now (the Euros were a shining example of this).

To mee it seems like Man U would be well served to do a 4-3-3 with RVP up top, Nani and Young as attacking wingers, and Rooney in the CAM position. Maybe that's roughly what you're thinking as well Frank. This gives Nani and Rooney a lot of maneuverability, which is a good thing.

#667 Confirmed or speculation. I've only seen the latter.

I'd be a little surprised about moving Chicharito. It seemed like he was part of the long-term plan. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see SAF try to sell high on Rooney in a year or so.
   671. I am going to be Frank Posted: August 16, 2012 at 04:24 PM (#4209894)
Chicharito sells a lot of jerseys. They just got rid of Park. Kagawa does get them some Japanese dollars, but losing Korea and Mexico in the same season would seem a bit too much. I don't know how Kagawa fits now.

   672. Randy Jones Posted: August 16, 2012 at 04:35 PM (#4209899)
Getting RVP is fine, although I am a little surprised they paid that much for him. I suspect that Rooney will play in the same position he did last year, with RVP taking the role of Welbeck/Chicharito.

I would be a little surprised if they sold Chicharito, but if they get a large enough offer, it's probably the right move. He is very good and pretty young, but certainly not irreplaceable. With RVP added to their other options, they have a couple years before they would absolutely need to find a replacement.

[671] I don't see what getting RVP and possibly selling Chicharito has to do with Kagawa at all.

   673. I am going to be Frank Posted: August 16, 2012 at 05:12 PM (#4209919)
I don't see them playing RVP, Rooney and Kagawa together.
   674. Randy Jones Posted: August 16, 2012 at 05:21 PM (#4209926)

A year in the Championship can act as a nice little reality check. At 6-7m it's a very nice signing, and goes to show what I mentioned earlier. There are still bargains to be had, as long as your letterhead doesn't contain words like 'Manchester'.

Although I am not 100% sure how this works out from a playing time perspective. The most obvious role for him seems to already be filled by Tiote rather competently. CB or FB seemed like the obvious places to address, and would have had a larger impact imo. They have 4.5 PL quality defenders on the roster (with Steven Taylor coming off a torn ACL), that doesn't leave much room for injury or rotation. I am strongly leaning towards 3-5-2 for my FM13 Newcastle team, I can tell you that much...

Fergie's current front line doesn't even measure up to one of his more recent teams. That attacking quartet of Rooney, Ronaldo, Berba, and Tevez from a few years ago was terrifying.

Teams like Manchester United don't look to have a great eleven, they want a team where they can contend with players 12-22 playing a big part. It's all up to the players who will be trusted in the big games, squad rotation means most of them will get their share of games.

Kagawa is an attacking midfielder who played behind the striker. Unless he plays out wide he's not going to play in the midfield with Rooney and RVP up top.

SAF will stick him in a CM role regardless. He has never shied away from having 1 of the 2 CM's play a mostly attacking position.

Michael Cox's take on RVP to United. Its true Ferguson will let midfield players some license to go forward but they still have to put in a defensive shift and you can't leave Carrick alone by himself in front of the back four.

FoxSoccer also has Dempsey moving.

Pretty sure I saw yesterday on Grant Wahl's twitter that beinsport is not going to be offering an online subscription service, at least not initially. So that's a whole lot less Serie A and PSG. I also think they have rights to La Liga.

Anyone know if ESPN 3 will still have Serie A? There was a ton of overlap last year between ESPN 3 and Fox Soccer Channel (or FSC+, or .tv), and I haven't heard if ESPN also lost its share like Fox.

ESPN 3 will not have Serie A, La Liga, or Ligue 1.

So I'm playing Football Manager and there's a news item in my inbox that says Bruce Arena could leave the Galaxy and that I'm the media favorite to get the job if so. Standard issue FM stuff. I bring it up because in the "also in consideration" part (which used to mean the guy listed first gets the job when if/when it opens, not you) is...

Sven-Goran Eriksson!

Dempsey moving will have me rooting for Liverpool to make the champion's league this year. I really like Suarez too (honest!), so hopefully they can do well.

Ugh. That sucks. Thanks for the info, though. (Directed at DA's #693.)

Unless you guys are seeing different information than me, I don't think the Dempsey deal is done. I'm guessing the news outlets are going off of Jol's presser this morning, where he called out Liverpool for showing interest but not actually making an offer. There's quite obviously interest from Liverpool's end, but they likely don't want to pay all that much for a somewhat older player who's in the last year of his deal.

You don't have Dish or DirecTV, do you? Looks like Bein Sports 1 is carried there, and supposedly it launched.

BTW: is the video quality on satellite better than cable? And is it noticeable to average person? (Sort of like the question about HD-DVD/Bluray, or 1080p vs 720p back before tv's had gone over 50".) One hears that a lot (that satellite quality is supposed to be better). How often does the signal go out in bad weather?

Unfortunately, puck, I have cable, not Dish or DirectTV. Given my relative lack of interest in non-Liverpool EPL teams, I will likely go off of the recommendation of a poster here and try to keep a closer eye on Eredivisie.

I have Dish. I've seen my friend's cable picture quality from Time Warner (I think it is). I prefer Dish's. It just seems.. purer. Some of that I think are the cable boxes. It may not be noticeable, and I may be biased.

The signal only goes out for me in the most extreme storms, and if so, no more than 5-10 minutes. Or if snow accumulates in front of the dish, but that's relatively easy to deal as long as the dish is reachable.

There are reports that Dempsey has gone on strike to force a move.

Let me one again thank Al Jazeera for ####### up my ability to watch Torino this season. Thanks guys! I hope you lose a gazillion dollars on this deal.

Sounds like Serie A and La Liga already regret taking the short money.

Now that the European seasons are starting, at least some clubs are worried their leagues made a mistake by taking dollars over distribution. Complicating the matter, a dispute broke out in Spain, with some clubs saying their television rights were sold by a company that doesn't own them.

"I know Madrid and Barcelona are already concerned by what has happened domestically," AC Milan director Umberto Gandini said in a telephone interview. "We were trying to maximize revenues ahead of visibility. Frankly speaking, we were not aware of such difficulties reaching viewers in the United States and the fact that we are going to be penalized highly by the difference in viewership."

Geniuses. This isn't going to help Italy catch up to the PL anytime soon.
