What the hell was Kaboul doing? Playing everyone on side and then just stopped. Adebayor should have equalized.
   902. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: August 31, 2014 at 08:43 AM (#4782686)
God I love the way Liverpool plays.
   903. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: August 31, 2014 at 08:47 AM (#4782687)
Balotelli has looked good so far. With a bit more finesse he's got a goal. The Liverpool defense looks a lot like last year, though.
   904. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: August 31, 2014 at 08:48 AM (#4782688)
LOL@Sterling's stepovers. Looked so nice until he forgot the ball.
   905. The John Wetland Memorial Death (CoB) Posted: August 31, 2014 at 08:55 AM (#4782690)
Dier's a keeper.
   906. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: August 31, 2014 at 08:57 AM (#4782691)
That was a hell of a tackle.
   907. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: August 31, 2014 at 08:58 AM (#4782692)
And important foul there from Allen.
   908. The John Wetland Memorial Death (CoB) Posted: August 31, 2014 at 08:59 AM (#4782693)
Spuds will probably ship more goals this game, but this is a much improved Spurs team from the last campaign. They're playing with more purpose and incisiveness and forward intention that at any time last year.
   909. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: August 31, 2014 at 09:01 AM (#4782694)
Balo loves those back heel passes. I think he's going to surprise people with the number of assists he racks up this year (by which I mean he'll have more than a couple)
   910. I am going to be Frank Posted: August 31, 2014 at 09:01 AM (#4782695)
I thought the Spurs defense would be better, but they're clearly not.
   911. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: August 31, 2014 at 09:02 AM (#4782697)
Aww, Balo, you gotta score there.
   912. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: August 31, 2014 at 09:25 AM (#4782703)
Well, I thought the pants crapping was imminent but it seems it still could come anytime. I'm stretched and ready for an angry run at any moment.
   913. I am going to be Frank Posted: August 31, 2014 at 09:35 AM (#4782704)
Embellishment!!! However, still a penalty.
   914. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: August 31, 2014 at 09:35 AM (#4782705)
Complete bullshit.
   915. The John Wetland Memorial Death (CoB) Posted: August 31, 2014 at 09:35 AM (#4782706)
Oh for ####'s sake, Dier.

Yeah, he flopped, but you just can't do that.
   916. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: August 31, 2014 at 09:37 AM (#4782707)
Yeah, he flopped, but you just can't do that.

Come on, everybody in the league does that.
   917. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: August 31, 2014 at 09:38 AM (#4782708)
That was Dier.

(sorry)

Clear penalty, but Allen toppled like he'd been clubbed rather than slightly held back.
   918. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: August 31, 2014 at 09:44 AM (#4782710)
I think the problem is one that used to exist to a greater degree in the NHL. Refs were so hesitant about calling penalties that guys had to dive to,get the call. They've done some good work with a zero tolerance policy to improve things.

Of course Allen dove. The problem is that of course there's a foul on Dier, he reached out and grabbed the opponent. If the refs would consistently call that with or without the player going to ground players would not feel as compelled to dive.
   919. Howling John Shade Posted: August 31, 2014 at 09:47 AM (#4782711)
Well, this is beginning to seem familiar.
   920. The John Wetland Memorial Death (CoB) Posted: August 31, 2014 at 09:47 AM (#4782712)
Oh boy, it's time for the Townsend show ...

And ... ####.

Same ol' ####.
   922. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: August 31, 2014 at 09:48 AM (#4782714)
Wow, what a ####### goal.
   923. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: August 31, 2014 at 09:48 AM (#4782715)
Well, angry run time. At least I get started with my day early. Thanks Andros!
   924. The John Wetland Memorial Death (CoB) Posted: August 31, 2014 at 09:48 AM (#4782716)
Well, that was sub-optimal.
   925. Howling John Shade Posted: August 31, 2014 at 09:50 AM (#4782717)
Great finish from Moreno. At least that makes me somewhat less annoyed about the penalty.
   926. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: August 31, 2014 at 10:18 AM (#4782721)
Oh, so now a shirt-tug ISN'T a penalty?
   927. The John Wetland Memorial Death (CoB) Posted: August 31, 2014 at 10:19 AM (#4782722)
#### off, Dowd.
   928. Swedish Chef Posted: August 31, 2014 at 10:26 AM (#4782728)
Well-deserved win for Villa, just another nine wins and a smattering of draws needed to stay up.

Hull took three yellows in the last 15 minutes to contain young Jack Grealish.
   929. Howling John Shade Posted: August 31, 2014 at 10:27 AM (#4782730)
That was a pretty thorough beating. Spurs back four still looks like a mess, maybe Davies gets in ahead of Rose now. Kaboul had a bad game. Sterling is a pretty terrifying player, though that one finish was Lennon-like.

On a more positive note: 5-0, 4-0, 3-0. The trend is in our favor!
   930. The John Wetland Memorial Death (CoB) Posted: August 31, 2014 at 10:52 AM (#4782741)
That was a pretty thorough beating.

An improvement over last year, though. Which is something ...

Spurs back four still looks like a mess, maybe Davies gets in ahead of Rose now.

I certainly hope so, LB was an open sore for Spurs last season and Rose isn't the solution.

Kaboul had a bad game.

Kabobs should be behind Fazio and Dier (after Walker is fit) and likely Chiriches at CB for Spurs. Frankly, I'd only play him against lesser opposition.

Also, if there is real interest from Southampton for Townsend, Spurs should sell him fast and count themselves lucky. He's got Robben's fixed mindset with about a 1/2 of Robben's skillset ...

   931. AuntBea Posted: August 31, 2014 at 11:32 AM (#4782748)
Koscielny let a guy get behind him for an easy header for a goal... after he was concussed 10 minutes earlier (and was allowed back on 2 minutes after the concussion). Then Arsenal took him off. It was a very beautifully worked goal by Leicester, regardless.

   932. Juilin Sandar to Conkling Speedwell (Arjun) Posted: August 31, 2014 at 11:39 AM (#4782752)
Remy to Chelsea is official.

Leicester have been (in all of their games so far) a wonderful example of how defending from the front and rapidly condensing the lines in transition is a way of running two banks of four without being exposed and still being dangerous on the counter. I was impressed with them against Everton, I was impressed with them against Chelsea, and have been impressed with their holding their own here, too.
   933. Swedish Chef Posted: August 31, 2014 at 12:10 PM (#4782760)
Kagawa to Dortmund looks done.
   934. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: August 31, 2014 at 12:15 PM (#4782764)
Leicester are making a very good accounting for themselves here. They have not looked overmatched at all.
   935. Swedish Chef Posted: August 31, 2014 at 03:05 PM (#4782823)
I see news claiming that United will send Chicarito on loan to Real. How does that make sense?
   936. Mefisto Posted: August 31, 2014 at 04:05 PM (#4782850)
That's one of the strangest loan deals I've ever seen.
   937. Swedish Chef Posted: August 31, 2014 at 04:23 PM (#4782862)
Real might need him, they have gone from 2-0 up to 2-3 down against Real Sociedad.
   938. The John Wetland Memorial Death (CoB) Posted: August 31, 2014 at 04:32 PM (#4782865)

[937] Ahem ... 2-4.

HaHa Madrid.

A fun weekend and now it's capped with a Labor Day (U.S.) Transfer Day combo. #transferdeadlineday is already full of....it.

Colombian journalist Saris Bello says Man United will pay €65m for Radamel Falcao and will sign a four-year deal.

Well, it could happen!

Favorite part of this weekend, RM at RSO. Least favorite part, seeing Diego Costa and Chelsea score a goal every single time I dared to look at the TV.
   942. JoeHova Posted: September 01, 2014 at 05:58 AM (#4783038)
Word is that Falcao is on his way to Manchester United, though it seems to be on a loan.
   943. Swedish Chef Posted: September 01, 2014 at 06:01 AM (#4783039)
Falcao to United seems to be real, but it's a loan deal.

In weirder United news, here's a photo of Javier Hernandez going to a medical in Madrid.

Aston Villa has sent El Ahmadi back to Feyenoord. The move for Cleverley doesn't seem to be working out, the guy expects to get paid.
   944. Swedish Chef Posted: September 01, 2014 at 06:08 AM (#4783041)
Now I kinda wonder if Milan is getting van Ginkel as thanks for taking Torres.

   946. I am going to be Frank Posted: September 01, 2014 at 09:09 AM (#4783053)
What the hell? The last thing I expected was United getting another striker - and an expensive one at that. This is crazy. I don't see why Madrid didn't just take Falcao?
   947. Swedish Chef Posted: September 01, 2014 at 09:56 AM (#4783057)
AVB signs Bart Simpson

Expect the Zenit fans to rage.

Dunno, Chef. He's white, blond, and has a crew cut. Seems like their kind of people.
   949. ursus arctos Posted: September 01, 2014 at 11:08 AM (#4783080)
The Falcao deal reportedly involves both FFP and tax shenanigans, and it may be that the same synergies were not available at Madrid. I would also imagine that Mendes sees potential benefits from doing more business with Manchester United.

   950. frannyzoo Posted: September 01, 2014 at 11:19 AM (#4783084)
If MUFC is getting Falcao and not addressing midfield or defending (i.e., still has Tom Cleverly playing at all), they would appear not to be doing this right. Hmmm...Or maybe Rooney is that box-to-box midfielder after all.
   951. frannyzoo Posted: September 01, 2014 at 11:44 AM (#4783094)
I'm excited that Atletico now has Cerci to pair with Griezmann. Speed/pace will not be a problem with those two, and Simeone is the kind of coach to get max. work rates from both of them. Given the drop-off expected to come from the sell-off post-title, Atletico seem to have come out of it looking about as good as was possible. We'll see if the goals start to come, at all, now.
   952. JuanGone..except1game Posted: September 01, 2014 at 12:05 PM (#4783099)

That team is now the epitome of top heavy. I don't see how they can drop their new captain Wazza, so I'm guessing Mata and Januzaj are going to be benched. My favorite internet joke about all of this is the fact that ManU have now replaced RVP before Arsenal has.

The Falcao deal reportedly involves both FFP and tax shenanigans

With his reported £300k wages + no taxes coupled with the reports that Mendes has said that this is a loan/purchase, I can't wait for someone to write about the details.
   953. ursus arctos Posted: September 01, 2014 at 12:20 PM (#4783103)
Lewis Holtby on loan to HSV.

And Giuseppe Rossi is having another knee operation. The man is cursed.
   954. jmurph Posted: September 01, 2014 at 01:18 PM (#4783142)
I always feel compelled to start Manchester City-related transfer talk with I Know No One Feels Bad for City Fans... but I can't figure out what is going on with Negredo. He seems to be heading somewhere. For whatever reason City seem comfortable going with just the oft-injured Aguero/Jovetic and the oft-subpar Dzeko.

I have to say I watched Spurs-Liverpool with a bit of regret over Sturridge and Balotelli, and to a lesser extent Adebayor, though I think the circumstances in each case keep me from blaming the club too much.
   955. jmurph Posted: September 01, 2014 at 01:22 PM (#4783145)
So maybe Welbeck to Arsenal after all? It's not going to excite the fans, but I could see him putting it together some day. He clearly has talent, and lord knows there is available playing time there for a healthy striker.
   956. Swedish Chef Posted: September 01, 2014 at 02:43 PM (#4783176)
Seems like Arsenal and United only wanted a loan deal but Welbeck wanted a permanent move and nixed the transfer.
   957. The John Wetland Memorial Death (CoB) Posted: September 01, 2014 at 02:43 PM (#4783177)
[955] Sounds like that might not go through. Arsenal want a loan and Welbeck says he's only interested in a permanent move ...

I'm not sure what ManU are doing but Chicharito makes sense for Real Madrid. If he was willing and able to be a sub for ManU he can certainly do it at Real Madrid. If they get Falcao they probably have a locker room problem. I can't imagine Hernandez is going to argue that he should play ahead of Benzema so he can come off the bench comfortably enough.

I'm not sure what appeals to Hernandez about it though.
   959. Howling John Shade Posted: September 01, 2014 at 03:24 PM (#4783191)

He's watched Goal! II too many times?
   960. I am going to be Frank Posted: September 01, 2014 at 03:27 PM (#4783192)
I don't know what the hell is going on - Sandro to QPR? Defoe to QPR (I had no idea Toronto had sacked their whole coaching staff)? Rafa Marquez to Verona?
   961. Swedish Chef Posted: September 01, 2014 at 03:42 PM (#4783196)
'Arry is putting the band back together. Niko Kranjcar too.
   962. Mefisto Posted: September 01, 2014 at 03:45 PM (#4783197)
Best I can figure for United, Van Gaal plans to switch to a 4-3-3 with Falcao-Van Persie-Rooney up top. Maybe he figures he can outscore everyone, even with a sucky defense.
   963. The John Wetland Memorial Death (CoB) Posted: September 01, 2014 at 04:35 PM (#4783221)

Down to an hour.
   965. frannyzoo Posted: September 01, 2014 at 05:04 PM (#4783248)
Only a few minutes left. I've liked Welbeck and found his being at the unlikable MUFC a dilemma. Still, he's not THAT guy, the one who just puts the ball in the back of the damn net when all seems hopeless, when it's absolutely needed, when nobody seems up to it. Like Suarez, Falcao, Messi, Zlatan...you know, THAT guy. As has often been the case since the Invincibles, Arsenal doesn't have THAT guy and will very likely wear the hell out of the pitch at the arc/top of the area. Wear it the hell out. I hope I'm wrong he is THAT guy. Guess we'll find out in this situation.

Meanwhile, it's just about time for, finally, picking standings in all the leagues. Still don't know if MUFC is top seven, but I'm pretty sure they ain't top four after today (so far).

Edit: Reus, seems to me, is THAT guy (winger variety). But Arsenal aren't getting him, are they?
   966. Swedish Chef Posted: September 01, 2014 at 05:13 PM (#4783257)
Welbeck is way better than Vacant in that spot.
   967. frannyzoo Posted: September 01, 2014 at 05:14 PM (#4783259)
Is "Vacant" Swedish for "Sanogo"?

Micah Richards to Fiorentina. Condolences to La Viola for the Rossi medical news Ursus noted above. All of Italy grieves that one.

1. Chels...

anybody wanna change that in the next half-hour, EPL head-honcho folks?

Except for the deals that will come in after ...

It would be highly amusing if Arsenal's request for an extension to complete the Wellbeck deal is denied.

Negredo to Valencia???

It's been in the works since yesterday, apparently. One report I saw had it as a loan with an agreement for 25 million pounds next year. That seems mighty high to me, more than they paid, so I'm gonna go ahead and doubt that one.
   975. The John Wetland Memorial Death (CoB) Posted: September 01, 2014 at 08:00 PM (#4783346)

And the Falcao deal is done.

I wouldn't have minded Canales at Villa, but that wasn't going to happen. Still, the most important thing was to hang on to Vlaar.

Valencia say they have a compulsory option on Negredo. Sounds more like "buy now, pay later" than a loan.

Ok, I'll post my (usually awful) predictions. Honestly, many of the bottom teams are pretty bad, so it's kind of random which ones get relegated:

1. Chelsea
2. City
3. Liverpool
4. United
5. Arsenal
6. Tottenham
7. Everton
8. Swansea
9. Hull
10. QPR
11. Aston Villa
12. Stoke
13. Southampton
14. Sunderland
15. West Ham
16. Newcastle
17. West Brom
18. Burnley
19. Leicester
20. Crystal Palace
   981. Swedish Chef Posted: September 01, 2014 at 08:55 PM (#4783368)
Ooooh, Villa's strong start have moved them up from the obligatory 14th place (just about everybody had them there) to 11th place in both of these.
   982. The John Wetland Memorial Death (CoB) Posted: September 01, 2014 at 09:11 PM (#4783379)
My revised predictions:

Chelsea: Jerk Costa with his Jerk face is perfect for Jerk Chelsea and Jerk Mourhino and his Jerk face ...
Man City: One of the short list best teams in the world, but not good enough to overcome the power of the Jerky Boys ...
Liverpool: Really damn good, but not quite in the same league as the teams above them ...
Tottenham: First reach. Problems, plenty of problems, but I think they're better than Arsenal or Everton as currently constructed ...
Arsenal: Transfer windows just seem some sort of existential challenge for Wenger; a challenge he just seems determined to keep failing ...
Everton: They don't have Arsenal's obvious failings, but I just don't think it came off for them this year.
United: I'm not sure if they stopped digging this window and, even if they did, I don't think it's enough in time. This is probably a reach ...
Swansea: Will very much put pressure on a place in Europe ...
Southamption: Reports of their demise are greatly overstated ...
Aston Villa: Think they've improved ...
Stoke: Still no fun to watch, but worse to play ...
Newcastle: You know, some strange mix of better and worse than they should be ...
Hull: Good signings ...
QPR: Sandro could just be the signing of the window, if he stays healthy, if ... and monkies could fly out of my butt ...
Leicester: Surprisingly solid the first 3 matches ...
Sunderland: Turgid, as per usual, but signings give hope ...
Crystal Palace: You think they should go down, but I think they won't ...
West Ham: Because, #### Meatloaf ...
West Brom: Because, it's not Bronn ...
Burnley: Meh.

Yeah, the "loan with a compulsory option" sounded weird; I think it's because Valencia's going through a change of ownership?

On Valencia, yes, I expect that the unusual arrangement is connected with the delays in finalizing Peter Lim's takeover of the club, though I'm even more certain that the decision to sign Negredo was cleared with Lim and that Valencia are using his money.

Tottenham ended up having a quiet but effective window and a sad one, too, with the exits of Dawson and Sandro. Most Spurs fans are being talked off the ledge today but I'm fine with what the club did. There's space now for Pochettino to work Kane, Ceballos and Mason into the team more and he's going to need at least until January to work out who has the legs to operate in his system and who doesn't. It really is sad to see Sandro leave for QPR, though. He's too good for them.

The Falcao thing was crazy. Maybe not what United needed but he certainly won't hold them back. I'm not fussed about Spurs missing out on Welbeck. I don't think much of him and I imagine Spurs decided it was either Welbeck now or Jay Rodriguez in January and decided on the latter. That's very defensible. Chicharito dropped a dollar and found a five dollar bill, no? My favorite quotes from the deadline were from the Hamburg manager who said it was a "negative environment" that held back Lewis Holtby. Well, the good vibes at Hamburg should cure all that! It was also disappointing that Torino lost Immobile and Cerci this window but it wasn't unexpected.

Where did some of the Yanks end up? I know Julian Green went to Hamburg on loan but did Agudelo/Shea/etc find new homes?

I actually feel pretty good abut my early predictions. I baked in ManU splasing some cash, so they don't move for me. I still think QPR is getting relegated, but that might be sheer spite talking.

Aston Villa get Cleverley on loan, which is probably a better deal than spending £8M for him. I hope he can help the team.

Huh; is that just a guess or based on a source? I was under the impression the player had chosen champions league football, rather than it being a decision by Spurs not to pursue.

Arsenal, from all the sources I've read, came into this late. When United first made Welbeck available Spurs were the clear favorites for him but didn't seem all that keen as Pochettino really wants to bring in Rodriguez. This is why Spurs only wanted to do a loan deal and a cut-price one at that. Pochettino also scouted Welbeck in person against MK Dons but I like to think he wouldn't have made a judgment on one game, no matter how hilarious.

Agudelo is still unattached, and Shea didn't move.

I have a feelng that Cleverley will be much better without the weight of expectations on him.
   996. Grunthos Posted: September 02, 2014 at 01:36 PM (#4783803)
Cleverley is a classic try-before-you-buy situation. I'd be happy to pay $8M for a Cleverley who can do what he was supposed to be capable of while coming up through the ManU system.
   997. Crispix reaches boiling point with lackluster play Posted: September 02, 2014 at 02:31 PM (#4783838)
I remember when Cleverley went on loan to Wigan, and everyone loved him, and then he came back to Man United and played about five games, and everyone loved him, and then he got hurt and everyone spent the rest of the season bemoaning how sad it was that Man United were going to struggle all year without one of their key players, Tom Cleverley. That really happened, right? He was like the Juan Agudelo of Man United.
   998. Mefisto Posted: September 02, 2014 at 02:52 PM (#4783862)
Some United fans claim that Cleverley was never the same after his injury (possible). Others say he was given a very conservative role over the last couple of years (I don't buy this).

EU is talking about hitting Putin where it hurts, the 2018 World Cup. EU talks a lot though, and threatening noises is one of Europe's favorite weapons.
