There are a lot of books about Millwall. Huh.
   2. Mefisto Posted: January 05, 2012 at 03:04 PM (#4029619)
Yeah, and most of them include mug shots from the arrests.

Remember when Jermaine Jones stomped on Marco Reus's foot? He got an 8 week suspension out of it. Ouch.

That Reus scored 2 goals in a 2-1 win is almost punishment enough.

Beat me to that one.

There was a period when hooligan memoirs made up a significant proportion of all football books published in England. They evidently sold very well among the hoolies themselves and wannabees.

Though Eamon Dunphy's "Only a Game" is a detailed account of a season at Millwall that doesn't talk much about hoolies at all.

I was scouring Netflix for movies the other day and I made it through 10 minutes of a movie called The Football Factory. If you can believe it, there's actually a sequel--a sequel!--to Green Street Hooligans on netflix. I didn't even bother.

That poor, poor man. My heart bleeds for him. Why must life be so patently unfair?

Torino are killing me this morning. They went up a man in the first half only to have a man sent off themselves early in the second. They've hit the post about a thousand times, too. 3 minutes to disappointment.
   10. Shooty: Applying to be Fearless Leader Posted: January 06, 2012 at 09:22 AM (#4030182)
Torino finish up with 9 men and 2 points lost. They need to understand that I'm tired of watching them on these crappy feeds with Italian announcers. I want to see them play in HD on a big tv with English speaking--or at least Scottish speaking--announcers. I'm shaking my fist at you Torino. Shaking my fist!
   11. Jose Can You Seabiscuit Posted: January 06, 2012 at 09:28 AM (#4030185)
Shooty - Have you considered employing a stern look while shaking your fist? I know that's a harsh step but desperate times...

Well, Torino is Italian so I'm going to put both my hands together and bringing them close to my chest in a beseeching manner. How can you treat me this way, Torino? The injustice is too much to bear!

Supposedly Ganso's agent is in London negotiating with Spurs. This rumor comes from the Telegraph so it may be only 98% BS instead of 100% BS if it were coming from The Daily Fail. In other Spurs news Sandro and Gallas both tore their calves and are out for a while. This has been a rough morning in Shooty Soccer World. If I knew how to get news for Partick Thistle I don't think I even would right now.

It's not?

Also, Partick just got Darren Cole and Kal Naismith on loan from Rangers. It probably makes them a better team, but also makes them more evil...

As long as Ken Bates isn't involved it's probably fine.

Rough day for Omar Gonzalez as well. Tore his ACL in training and is now on his way back to the US for surgery. D'oh.

Ol' 'Arry on Ganso:

“Ganso? I have never heard of him. I don't know him, where does he play? What position?
“I don't get to Brazil much. We got Sandro from there but other than that, no.”

Brazil? Do they play footie over there? Any decent players?

That Earnie Stewart story I linked above is really good, by the way. He seems to be doing very well for himself in Holland. Also...MONEYBALL!

Bad news for Everton--Jagielka out for 6 weeks.

Speaking of Moneyball, I know many people joke about the object of MLB not being to win the marginal win per dollar title...

But here is just such an analysis for the Premiership last season.

Blackpool were the best performers by their measure, Liverpool the worst. Tottenham were smack in the middle at tenth, perhaps lending credence to David Hirshey's assertion that without Luka Modric, Spurs are just "Stoke in prettier kits". (Stoke were eighth in the Points Per Pound table).

No doubt Spurs are punching above their weight right now. I do wonder what Arsenal would be without Robin van Persie now. The 1992 Mets?
   30. Obi One Kenobi Nil Posted: January 06, 2012 at 03:49 PM (#4030667)
Did they adjust for the fact that the the marginal value of a point is huge if it means finishing 17th rather than 18th?
   31. Obi One Kenobi Nil Posted: January 06, 2012 at 06:23 PM (#4030764)
Ugh. Watching Liverpool Vs. Oldham and it looks like they could have another "incident" on their hands as it appears some Liverpool supporters have been racially abusing a black Oldham player and when he went mental/reduced to tears started up a Suarez song

Yup. I continue to be completely baffled by John Henry's silence on all of this, and for what appears to be a lack of institutional control over LFC. Actually, disgusted is a better word for it. If I were him I wouldn't be too sure about this being ignored stateside for much longer.
   35. Baldrick Posted: January 07, 2012 at 02:01 PM (#4031207)
Dempsey with a hat trick!

I thought a couple years ago that it might be a good career move for him to try and muscle into a slightly higher-profile team. I'm really glad he didn't do that. Fulham has been a great fit, a place where his talents are appreciated and given full opportunity to flourish.

He scores a lot of scruffy goals, but there's real skill in that.
   36. frannyzoo Posted: January 07, 2012 at 02:38 PM (#4031226)
That alarm clock for Lazio to wake up for the start of the 2nd Half of Serie A must still be broken. A total disaster. Check out the whoscored ratings...2.7 for the red-carded keeper. As Rick Perry would say....

Of course this leaves yet another opening for Inter to get back into Europe. Criminy.

Arnaud Mendy with the GOLAZO! against Bolton. Sweet turn.
   40. Obi One Kenobi Nil Posted: January 07, 2012 at 07:13 PM (#4031377)
I'm not exactly shocked that the rather blase attitude taken by the club has been used as a "nod and a wink" by some of their more braincell deficient fans to do something stupid.

At least they didn't throw any bananas on the pitch.
   41. Shooty: Applying to be Fearless Leader Posted: January 07, 2012 at 08:15 PM (#4031407)
Yeah, that Mendy goal was fantastic. Macclesfield Town was sharp today and Bolton were a little lucky to get the draw. I listened to Spurs on the "radio" today. First time I've listened to soccer on the radio. The Cheltenham announcing crew were in AWE of Sebastian Bassong.

I feel bad for all the reasonable 'Pool fans (of which a few hang out here). This thing has snowballed in an unfortunate way, for sure. I can't help but thing if Liverpool and Suarez had just apologized, cited cultural differences for why he didn't think he'd crossed a line but had learned his lesson and kept their heads down, then the suspension would have been less than 8 games and everyone would be past it by now. I hope Chelsea are taking notes.

Man City could not have had a worse start. At least the Carling Cup will soak up two of those games for Kompany.

edit: Actually, I take that back. Kompany will miss the CC match against Liverpool, then Wigan and then...Spurs.

He'll miss 4 games because it's his second red card of the season.

At least they didn't throw any bananas on the pitch.

For people who don't know this is a reference to what happened to John Barnes in the 80's while he was a Liverpool player.
   48. Shooty: Applying to be Fearless Leader Posted: January 08, 2012 at 02:17 PM (#4031617)
Man U draw Liverpool for the 4th round. Is this serious now? Is the FA rigging interest in the Cup or something? Spurs will head to Watford. That's a short road trip, no?

Barca is not going to win the league. I just can't see Real dropping enough points.

Ledley King is out 2 months with a hamstring injury. Those Samba rumors are making more and more sense with Gallas already hurt.

Also, speaking of Barca, what's the deal with Jonathan Soriano? Are they ever going to set him free?

   54. Richard Posted: January 09, 2012 at 04:01 AM (#4031991)
Neil Warnock gets the sack.

Good move by QPR. Warnock is the last person you want spending transfer window cash. He's hit his ceiling again.

Spurs will head to Watford. That's a short road trip, no?

Yes, that's about as close as you can get to North London without actually being in it.
   55. Obi One Kenobi Nil Posted: January 09, 2012 at 05:20 AM (#4031998)
Read that Warnock was sacked after a bust up with the chairman over transfer targets, so transfers looks like it did play a part. It'll probably be Hughes who takes over.

I know, but that's not funny. It has actually also happened to Kahn though, which is.

On behalf of Spurs fans, I want to apologize for all the yapping Harry has been doing about Demba Ba and his release clause. I can't stand when he talks about players on other clubs so openly. That said, I can't believe other PL teams didn't know about the release clause until Harry spilled the beans.
   61. Obi One Kenobi Nil Posted: January 09, 2012 at 08:47 AM (#4032028)
There most likely is not and never was a release clause and if there was it would certainly not be £5MM considering he cost that in signing on and agent fees.

It's something to do with commemorating a fan who had a heart attack on that date during a clash between the police and the ultras.

An older gentleman had a fatal heart attack in the West Stand during Tottenham's win over West Brom last week. Very sad. For a happier (and horribly camp) Spurs-related diversion, Andros Townsend and the Tottenham Yutes perform "Stand By Me" in the dressing room.

Liverpool have apologised to Oldham's Tom Adeyemi after he suffered alleged racist abuse at Anfield..."The players and club pass on our sincere regrets to Tom Adeyemi for the upset and distress he suffered," said a Liverpool statement. "The actions of any one individual do not represent our fans. Their stance on these issues is just as resolute as the club's."
The statement continued, "On the other hand, when a player does it, that's a whole other thing."

Yup. No listing yet on the Meadowlands site, but I would get tickets early. That could be a hell of a fun game to watch.

If there were a HOF for English soccer equivalent to Cooperstown, Friedel would get elected, no?

He's definitely been good enough.

There is one.* Brad Friedel isn't in it yet.

*) To avoid nausea do not look at the bottom of the 2004 inductees list.

Major changes announced to the U.S. Open Cup.

All MLS teams through to the first round proper (as well as USL/NASL teams), random draws through the quarterfinals, and a more compressed schedule. It's a gigantic improvement on the previous format. It sounds like they're going to keep the blind bidding for the semis and the final, though. And all the matches are on Tuesdays (except for the final, which is either Tuesday or Wednesday). Wouldn't it make sense to put on the Open Cup Final on a weekend where you could get some publicity? The Sunday before Labor Day (right before the NFL starts) seems like an ideal date.

That is diligently goofy. It seems like half the time they just pick the categories out of a hat--nevermind the honorees.

The best part is that they managed to induct Sir Alex twice...

The player's selections are actally pretty well thought out, albeit with a bias towards the Post WW II period.

Shame the museum is moving from Preston, but no doubt there will be increased attendance in Manchester.

March 3rd. That's the date. If Spurs are still in it after March 3rd then I'll get excited.

The lack of boomkmarks is killing this thread. Killing it!

It's weird they elect players who are still active.

And Sepp Blatter...I bet they wish they could have that one back.

Not a fan of the FA Cup?

Speaking of a lack of good football...Robbie Rogers signs with Leeds. Naw, I kid. I rate Rogers higher than most and think he still has a future with the Nats.

Pato is heading to PSG for 33 million Euros.

Ganso to Tottenham rumors persist.

Pedestrian goals are so beneath Benoit Assou-Ekotto. He specializes exclusively in golazos.

Check it.
