Because the first sporting event of 2013 that I watched was a soccer match.

Bournemouth up on Wigan. The only spanking so far is Spurs over Coventry. Lots of competitive games, I guess. Wish I could see them!

Victor Moses with a nicely taken goal. Boo!

Bolton up 2-0 on Sunderland now, Reading in control against Crawley and Darren Bent equalizes for Villa against Ipswich.

Radio link. It jumps from game to game, though.

Non-league Luton up on Wolves.

The Chelsea keeper grabbed the ball with his hands and stepped out of the box - but held the ball over the box area. I always thought that was a hand-ball. Did that rule change or was the rule always about the ball and not the player?
   208. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: January 05, 2013 at 12:13 PM (#4339614)
Chelsea up 3-1 now. Probably over now.

Cupset alert! Blackpool take the lead against Fulham.
   210. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: January 05, 2013 at 12:19 PM (#4339620)
Michael Owen subbed off for Charlie Adam in the Stoke-Crystal Palace game. That's all.

Chelsea up 3-1 now. Probably over now.

4-1 now. Leave Ba on! Let him get a debut hattrick!
   212. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: January 05, 2013 at 12:23 PM (#4339622)
Cardiff finally take the lead against Macclesfield.
   213. frannyzoo Posted: January 05, 2013 at 12:35 PM (#4339627)
Wolves still down at Luton Town. This would be a new low in a season full of them.

The rule has always been about where the ball is.
   215. I am going to be Frank Posted: January 05, 2013 at 12:49 PM (#4339633)
Lampard takes the PK - Ba should have gotten it for the opportunity to get the hat trick. Just found out that Man U is going to be on Fox. Really FA Cup on Fox?
   216. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: January 05, 2013 at 12:50 PM (#4339635)
Macclesfield and Luton both winning now.
   217. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: January 05, 2013 at 12:59 PM (#4339645)
Wigan gets a midweek replay at Bournemouth. Enjoy! Macclesfield and Luton on to the 4th round where they will hopefully face Spurs.
   218. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: January 05, 2013 at 01:00 PM (#4339646)
Well, that was fun. Time for some Serie A action with Torino!

Crazy. It looked like Aussie rules. Well, I learned something new today.
   220. I am going to be Frank Posted: January 05, 2013 at 01:20 PM (#4339657)
United looks like they're playing a 4-3-1-2. Rafael playing right midfielder. Joe Cole making his second West Ham debut. I guess that doesn't quite make sense.
   221. I am going to be Frank Posted: January 05, 2013 at 01:32 PM (#4339663)
Allardyce must be salivating at United's lineup. Evans, Vidic, Smalling and Welbeck with six shrimps and De Gea's flapping.
   222. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: January 05, 2013 at 02:25 PM (#4339675)
Brian Philips piece on Pro Vercelli in FM is what got me into playing FM. That bastard. Hundreds of hours of my life gone! The recipes his wife made during that run are also really good.

Bring on the Dutchman now!
   224. odds are meatwad is drunk Posted: January 05, 2013 at 02:39 PM (#4339682)
Im pulling for west ham here

edited to add that I do have a Man U jersey and a new castle one at home, point being no true favorite team
   225. JuanGone..except1game Posted: January 05, 2013 at 03:31 PM (#4339696)
The fact that Rafa played a full squad then let Mata and Hazard play a full 90 in a FA Cup match while starting Marin vs QPR should dispel all notions that the man knows what he's doing.

Also, brutal RVP goal. West Ham deserved the win, though Carlton Cole one-footedness haunted him again right before RVP's goal.
   226. Mattbert Posted: January 05, 2013 at 03:35 PM (#4339698)
That was almost Bergkamp-esque from van Persie. Quite a take.
   227. zack Posted: January 05, 2013 at 03:48 PM (#4339707)
Van Persie eatin' hearts. Old Man Giggsy's delivery was exceptional as well, straight outta nothing.
   228. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: January 05, 2013 at 04:06 PM (#4339712)
A guy named Meatwad should be a Toon fan.
   229. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: January 05, 2013 at 04:31 PM (#4339723)
Chelsea have three games in seven days upcoming, too. I am shocked Mata and Hazard both went 90.
   230. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: January 05, 2013 at 05:38 PM (#4339755)

Why? I think it makes perfect sense. The reality is that Chelsea should have handled QPR easily if Rafa himself had played 90 minutes against QPR and game in hand or no their best shot at a meaningful trophy probably is the FA Cup.

I think you can certainly make a case that with the sizable lead that someone like Cahill or Hazard should have come off (according to the game report Mata came off at 79 minutes) but Torres and Lampard got rests (Lampard's half hour was presumably not overly taxing with a 4-1 lead when he came on).
   231. I am going to be Frank Posted: January 05, 2013 at 05:55 PM (#4339766)
Its amazing how much Chelsea is reliant on Mata. With all the money and talent, they shouldn't need their best 11 to beat QPR. In fact that out of the 22 that started on the field for that game, would you take any QPR player over any Chelsea player? Taraabt over Marin. Maybe Julio Cesar because Cech was hurt and Turnbull was playing.

Edit: I do agree that you take Mata off at 60 minutes.
   232. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: January 05, 2013 at 06:19 PM (#4339782)
Stale Solbakken gets the sack. That'll teach Wolves to hire a furriner.
   233. Mefisto Posted: January 05, 2013 at 10:20 PM (#4339848)
That'll teach furriners to work for Wolves.
   234. I am going to be Frank Posted: January 05, 2013 at 11:35 PM (#4339871)
I feel really stupid I had to look up "furriner".
   235. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: January 06, 2013 at 03:37 AM (#4339914)
I initially read "furriner" as "furrier" and thought that the Wolves were suicidal after relegation.
   236. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: January 06, 2013 at 10:44 AM (#4339958)
Michu just owns Arsenal. Arsenal should just buy him for 30 million--it would be money well spent.
   237. Sheer Tim Foli Posted: January 06, 2013 at 10:57 AM (#4339959)
It was a beautiful goal. The gunners are still attacking but they are getting sloppy under the pressure.
   238. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: January 06, 2013 at 11:01 AM (#4339960)
Arsenal really should be winning now--they've been all over Swansea the entire half but they're getting the yips in the box.

edit: BTW, Arsenal have never gone out in the 3rd round under Wenger. They'll get the equalizer, I think, the way things are going.
   239. Sheer Tim Foli Posted: January 06, 2013 at 11:01 AM (#4339961)
It looks like both sides are tryng to throw the game.
   240. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: January 06, 2013 at 11:06 AM (#4339963)
Swansea are about to have a nervous breakdown!

edit: And...the equalizer.

Only a matter of time

They're likes college basketball team that goes to the sweet sixteen every year but never wins it. They never go out early in the FA Cup and they've made the knockout stage of the CL for a decade now but that's it. They're Gonzaga.

Ugh. That was coming for awhile.
   243. Sheer Tim Foli Posted: January 06, 2013 at 11:09 AM (#4339966)
Ugh. I am not even cheering for Swansea and I am sick to my stomach. So hard to watch.
   244. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: January 06, 2013 at 11:09 AM (#4339967)
Swansea have just capitulated. The psychology of a game of soccer is fascinating. It's almost like that Michu goal was the worst thing that could have happened to Swansea.
   245. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: January 06, 2013 at 11:09 AM (#4339968)
That's a wonderful finish.
   246. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: January 06, 2013 at 11:12 AM (#4339969)
The entire second half Shooty. The goal was against the run of play. Whatever happened at the respective halftime talks Arsenal have been superior since the second period began. If this were ManU we would her a lot about the Ferguson hair dryer but I think Wenger deserves a lot of credit here.
   247. Sheer Tim Foli Posted: January 06, 2013 at 11:12 AM (#4339971)

Replay!
   254. Sheer Tim Foli Posted: January 06, 2013 at 11:21 AM (#4339978)
They should have to do the replay right now.
   255. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: January 06, 2013 at 11:23 AM (#4339979)
Meanwhile, Udinese stomped on Inter. Guess who with a brace.
   256. Sheer Tim Foli Posted: January 06, 2013 at 12:08 PM (#4339989)
Despite being a Liverpool supporter since 1984 I can't help but hope for Mansfield here.
   257. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: January 06, 2013 at 12:09 PM (#4339991)
I hope Mansfield win a replay so their players can take the stage at Anfield.
   258. Mattbert Posted: January 06, 2013 at 12:11 PM (#4339992)
How can you not root for a team with a player named Exodus Geohaghan? In a sport chock full of great names, that is still a standout.
   259. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: January 06, 2013 at 12:12 PM (#4339993)
Well, that was quick. Time for chores already, dammit. Peter Crouch's dance is better than Sturridge's, BTW.

Spurs will be at Leeds or Birmingham in the next round.
   261. Sheer Tim Foli Posted: January 06, 2013 at 12:15 PM (#4339995)
This pitch is terrible. I bet Mansfield had the sprinklers on all night. I understand that was a common trick in Canadian Football in the 1950s.

I just know it from watching classic games when they show them on FSC. Baggy shirts, mullets and horrible, horrible pitches.

Mourinho sits Casillas again, and Adan gets sent off in the fifth minute after Madrid had taken the lead.

Casillas concedes the penalty and looks shaky in general.

edit: And Pescara upset Fiorentina on the road. A tough one for Fiorentina.

Australian goalkeeper Mat Ryan trained with Spurs last summer, and was rumored headed to Derby during this transfer window, but is now off to train with Rangers (who couldn't acquire him until September due to sanctions) for ten days. Is there any way Rangers in September is a step up on Derby right now? Ryan's Central Coast club is top of the A League around mid-season.

Don't forget the short shorts. I guess we all have Michael Jordan and the Fab 5 to thank for the introduction of longer shorts in every sport.

The Mansfield Town forward seems to be causing some trouble for Liverpool's center backs. Sturridge looks decent but I don't think you can take anything away from that since Mansfield defense looks not good.

Mansfield! It's not over yet. They'd be level if the ref and his assistants had eyes in their heads.
   274. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: January 06, 2013 at 01:51 PM (#4340050)
OK...Ronaldo kicks the ball into a defender's hand (hand at the side, not raised or anything) and somehow the ref awards a free kick and gives the defender a yellow. The ####?
   275. Shooty Survived the Shutdown of '14! Posted: January 06, 2013 at 01:55 PM (#4340056)
Mansfield have come so close to equalizing a few times now. Liverpool will feel fortunate not to have a replay. The Mansfield chairman will have to console himself with his hot trophy wife.
   276. Langer Monk Posted: January 06, 2013 at 01:59 PM (#4340058)
Mansfield got robbed. My days of not liking Suarez are certainly coming to a middle.

No Landon Donovan for next month's qualifiers. I think we've entered a post-Landon era, folks.
   278. I am going to be Frank Posted: January 06, 2013 at 02:53 PM (#4340087)
Liverpool looked awful but got lucky. I find it hard to blame Suarez on that. I don't think it was deliberate, and you could tell he thought it was going to be called off. The linesman and ref just missed it.

I'm almost starting to feel sorry for him. We're approaching Reagan in '88 here.

edit: BTW, Cavani was class today. Man City better save up all their pennies.

Sepp Blatter being demented would make a lot of sense.

I'm guessing that he's in power for at least a few years after he actually dies, since it's even easier to steal tons of money with a dead man fronting the con than someone afflicted with dementia.

"Landon Donovan" would be a good name for a lower division club somewhere in the British Isles.

After a good FA Cup third round, it's a shame that the draw for the 4th round isn't more interesting. Brentford vs Chelsea might be good if Brentford can sneak through, I suppose. They are near neighbours but rarely meet.
   289. ursus arctos Posted: January 07, 2013 at 08:03 AM (#4340568)
FPH, I was restricting myself to football reporting, with a focus on transfer speculation, as I assumed that was the context of the question.

If the question was more general, I'd agree with you that there isn't much between them (though there is some). For example, Bild's demonization of the Greek people has been nothing short of vile.

Re: Suarez...I actually don't think that was on The Imp, that was just terrible refereeing. The 4th official told the Mansfield manager they saw the handball but decided it wasn't intentional which makes absolutely no sense to me. I'm going to assume they just told him that to get him to stop screaming at them.

Lots of rumors about Spurs finally making a play for Damiao and blah blah blah. Mattbert, are you referring to the rumors Schalke want to sell Holtby to Spurs now? Also, with the keeper musical chairs that may or may not be taking place between the mega bastard clubs soon, I'm very happy Spurs have locked up Lloris.

Tottenham has been charged with god knows what

It's hard to take UEFA seriously when every time a club's racist fans do something racist they find some reason to charge BOTH clubs. See also England vs Serbia and Man City vs Porto in last year's Europa league.

Was there any doubt that Messi was going to win this thing. I will forever find it strange that they have all these yearly awards in the middle of everyone's (well the European) seasons.

So if Holtby comes over now instead of June, who plays where? This has to mean less PT for Dempsey.

To be clear, I don't "blame" Suarez - while I think it was intentional, it's also the referees' job to get this right. Nevertheless, I just don't like him.

So if Holtby comes over now instead of June, who plays where? This has to mean less PT for Dempsey.

Possibly. I'm not sure yet how Spurs envision Holtby playing. Dempsey is about to get a good run of games with Adebayor at the ACN. Also, Dempsey can play wide and up top and, by all accounts, that's not something Holtby will be doing.

Abby Wambach wins the ballon d'or thingy.

I think it would mean a bit more rotation of the midfield trio, with Dembele maybe given more of a break here and there. It would almost certainly mean the end of the recent forays with 4-4-2 and a return to the single-striker shape that Spurs were using earlier.

Also, I guess Adebayor *is* going to the ACN now, so that's definitely the end of 4-4-2 for a little while at least.
